I fell in love with an 8mm German Mauser in 1967...7.92mmx57mm to be exact. My brother unboxed one new in the cosmoline, never issued for 29.95 plus tax shipped to the front door of our farm house...laminated stock, in new condition unissued. It was as pretty as any young woman you ever seen...and that's a fact.
Dave, son beating you just means you taught him well. Beautiful rifle. Thank you for sharing. BTW, I had questioned you before about shooting groups with the Magnoetospeed on the rifle. I took your advice and did that to save components. I shot my best group ever today using your method. 308 165 Accubond handloads with a .2 MOA group. I am ready for a disabled veteran elk hunt in WY this fall, Lord willing and the creek don't rise.
I reload 8mm Mauser, but if I want full power hunting ammo, I go with Sellier & Bellot 8X57JS. It's loaded to higher European pressures (CIP) than US ammo. The Sellier & Bellot 8MM Mauser ammo is loaded to SAAMI pressure and is pretty mild.
Dave one thing to remember is to clean the rifle with Hot Soapy water with a splash of Ammonia the Ammo is Corrosive. There are some manufacturers that make 8MM Ammo PPU, Wolf Gold and S&B.
Yes, we thoroughly cleaned the rifle before the shoot and Matt will finish the cleaning after he gets home. He did find some Remington Core-Lokt 180grain factory @ $40.00
All of the 8mm mauser ammo that I have come accross is boxer primed. Therefore, not corrosive. The secret is to know what you are shooting and not guess the actual caliber, etc.....
Military surplus ammo frequently has very hard primers. Had to hit many of them twice to get them to go off. A new Wolf firing pin spring took care of that.
My suggestion if you want to hunt with this gun is to go online and order some sellier and bellot 196gr spce, and that rifle will be good even for elk. Energy will be almost identical to a 30-06 with a good 180gr load at the muzzle except the extra 16gr of bullet weight will help you carry energy!!! Pretty good elk round in that gun out to 400 yards easy if not a bit further depending onhow accurate your rifle is with it. It's about 30 a box, but it's exactly the performance you're gonna want out of a hunting round!!!
Happy Saturday, Dave and Matt. The only rifle I had with a scope for decades was a fixed 4x on a 22lr. I refused to desecrate my pre-64 Winchester 30-30 by putting a scope on it. I was a dead-eye with those buckhorn sights on a 100 yard range.
I know this thread is getting a little old, but I couldn't help but chime in. I have a sporterized BRNO 8x57 and love it. I handload as well which is essential with this cartridge, in my opinion. It will do anything my 30-06 will do from a hunting perspective but a whole lot more to talk about. Mine still has the German markings stamped into the rifle after they confiscated it in Czechoslovakia and sent it to their armory before issuing to a soldier in WWII. It is very accurate and as classic looking as you can expect. It's nice to see others still running their Mausers after all these years.
next time you have a misfire, leave the bolt closed. take an 8x57 cartridge and place the case rim into the groove that's been machined into the cocking piece and pull the cocking piece back. this way you won't have to disengage the bolt from locked position. hth and great shooting, i cant get groups like that when i use that 196-grain yugo mg hardball😇👍🇺🇸
hello dave your rifle is really really beautiful, I have been using the 8x57 jrs hunting for over 30 years in a browning double rifle the Sierra 175 grs bullet and the tuball 5000 (imr 4064 equivalent) give very good results in my rifle. Congratulations for your always very interesting videos. Have a good day.
The Hodgdon website lists 54 grains of H-4350 with a 200 grain bullet. The stated pressure is 45000 CUP. In two of my rifles, this load has a muzzle velocity between 2500 and 2560 fps with the 200 grain Accubond
Fantastic calibre, it is for all practical reasons the same as a 30-06. I also have an ex-military “Mauser” with that same step down barrel in 308 Win. My rifle easily shoots sub moa with a Timney trigger.
I just got a strange one must have been imported as barreled action, zastava, bad stock never sighted in...its a commercialized military receiver, has thumb cut and clip guide but rear is made like a commercial and drilled and tapped. Has an adjustable trigger...its like new 35 years old....i totally fell in love now that i worked it out...8mm is really really good for open sight east coast deer gun recoil and muzzle blast is very manageable. I fell in love with it too
W0W I Love♥that 0l' Mauser♥It reminds me of an Military Rifle I Customized in the 1960's and one in the 1970's also. Another GREAT Video Mr. Strohmeyer. I LIKE YOUR STYLE
There were a great deal of old military surplus Mauser model 98 and eastern block model 42 etc. barreled actions sold through Herters catalogue and others in the 60's and 70's. Many gunsmiths customized these rifles with custom stocks and sold them to the public. Thanks for watching.
Nosler makes 8x57 brass as well as some excellent hunting bullets, including all Copper E-tip 180 gr. for hunting. I have also made 8x57 brass from 30-06 brass with good results.
All commercial ammo is loaded down to prevent an accident with the millions of old worn out mauers floating around. I have a sporterized 8mm I reload ammo for, it will do everything the 3006 will do and maybe a bit better than the 06 with heavy bullets.
@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 The 8mm is the father case for the 9.3 Mauser with a lengthen neck. The 9.3 is very popular in Africa and Alaska for dangerous game. It was very popular because it fit in standard length Mauser actions. The 9.3 is an old cartridge but still popular with dangerous game hunters.
@@kevinthorrington2131 Thanks for that information here. In the USA and until lately, outside of the 7mm Rem. Mag. Any cartridge with a Millimeter name has failed to gain hunter support and continued popularity. All that has changed with the introduction of the 6.5 mm cartridges.
@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 I built three 6.5x55 rifles on 98 actions. One for my daughter, one for the wife, and one for me. I'm 60 years old, heavy recoil rifles make my arthritic shoulder hurt. Had a motorcycle accident when I was young, heavy recoil hurts me.

Nosler certainly has brass for the 8mm. Just bought some. PPU is suspect, at best. My 8 is a sporterized with twin triggers and a very fine shooting rifle. Best action ever built bar none.
Great rifle but have say wrong information about it being like the 308 the case is that of the 30-06 not the 308 the 308 is a short action rifle and the 30-06 and the 8x57 are both standard action rifles but other then that great gun and great shooting
Clarification: From the Hornady manual a .308 Win. case, is 2.015". 8x57mm case, is 2.244". 30-06 case is 2.494". Therefore the 8mm case length is closer to the .308 Win case length.. Action length was never referenced in this video. Our comparison here and reference to the .308 Win. in this video had more to do with a felt recoil comparison. Thanks for watching and commenting here.

A better rifle scope and use hand-loaded ammo, such as Iranian bullets in Old War Ammo or Sierra

Again wrong information you can get the stuff to reload and you can find ammo online for that's what I do very common ammo over sea
Berdan Primer cases are not the same as the more common Boxer primer cases that I use to reload.
Why do they use a Yugo as base? German pre war models are MUCH better, belgian and czech too!
Better 8mm ammo can be found online easily
