Good Morning Dave!!! Your son's rifle looks very nice with that rubber recoil pad!! 8mm Mauser yah!! You either love them or hate them??? I've got an M48 Mauser in the Military stock, with that lovely "Steel butt plate!!!" You talk about putting a hurtin' on yourself, it will do it!! Good video Dave!!!
Dave. Another good video with great shooting and reloading. Thanks for sharing. I'm not a fan of heavy recoil either. Would not want to shoot anything like .30-06 all day. Take care.
Afternoon Dave!! ❤❤ I received a AWESOME gift from a viewer and now have more brass and better bullets ta try!!! Got to range with the 170 sst (not great). Video coming. I found a bedding issue. (Video coming) Next (now) more loads on the bench with a 180 Nosler! Good video gives me some ideas. I got 2660fps top load with 170 sst but Im only a 19/20" bbl.
Look forward to your videos, Always. If it were my rifle and not my Son's, I would like to work up a good deer load with a 150 grain. According to the book it would be fast with lower recoil.
Good Morning Idaho ! Dave has a great load development. Remington cor Lok in 8 x 57 is under powered . They do this deliberately for protection from faulty rifles. My Local gunsmith has a barreled action in 8 x 57. I've been eyeing it for over a year. I need to act or I will be kicking myself.lol
The 8mmx57 is an interesting cartridge. The cartridge has a limited bullet selection, yet has a good variation of bullet weights. Brass seems widely available and I suppose 30.06 brass could be reformed and trimmed to 8mm Mauser.
It is a versatile cartridge, very popular in Europe and came to the USA mainly as war surplus. But never really caught on among the major American firearms manufacturers.
A lot of guys were talking years ago about light loading the 8mm with the 124gr projectiles, but no one had any luck getting much accuracy. Its in the reloading book. Yeah the yugo 24/47 is an intermediate action, the m48 does as well though. These shouldn't be confused with the yugo reworked k98s. The actions are a little bit shorter, that affects stocks and scope mounts and bolts, but effectively everything else is fair game. Last video we were talking about the stepped barrels. Some folks say ease or production, some people say harmonics, but I believe C&R Arsenal penned it right, as the barrel heats up itll expand laterally and help keep the accuracy as the heat increases. Ive never considered cfe223 in 8mm... Things may go better with something in the heavy 196gr range. Thanks for giving the 8mm some review! its under apprciated
I think those powders will be fine you just need to ajust it mine always seem to gravitate toward max load i would try that mite surprise you and give you more velocity we can always use more of that.least i do.
Looks like that k98 is using its orginal military barrel. It has a 1 and 9 twist. It likes heavier bullets around 200 grain. I recommend 200 grain smk over 49.5 grains of Reloader 16 but as you know work up. ( my average 2578 fps.) I was able to get all my holes touching at 100 yards but I also replaced my barrel with a Lothar and Walther barrel. There is no load data for Reloader 16 and 8mm but I used quick load software and it told me that it was the best powder I could use and it was right 😂.
Accuracy is effected by the chrono hanging on the barrel. Barrel harmonics are whacko with that on your barrel. With that type of chrono, accuracy and velocity are independent for data. Back to the range.
My experience (6 years w/ Magnetospeed chronograph). Point of impact does shift usually slightly lower, but group size is unaffected. At this stage of testing, Precision numbers and secondarily group size are the relevent data here. Thanks for your comment here.
Dave, do you load any 30-30? If so, do you have a good load? Also, I got the new Garmin Xero chronograph. Absolutely the best money I have spent in a long time. I have the Magnetospeed and on my second wand. I switched to a suppressor and would have to buy the one to fit that.
Never loaded for 30-30 Win. Congrats on the Garmin Xero. I am hearing good things about them. But at their current price I could buy allot of primers instead. HaHa.
When I rolled my own rifle cartridges(need to start again), I always weighed each load. I did not for many target/plinking weight handgun loads, but would if I was nearing max loads. The SD of the 170 8mm are about the same as 150 .308. You should be able to get somewhere in the middle of 308 Win to 30-06 velocities from their 150 grain loads with those 170s, in a modern action. You could let your son be the test shoulder if y'all are not to far apart and have a free weekend, while you search for the best load. Those you tested today, should put a deer in the freezer with no problem. I was sad to see all the shotgun hulls at your range. Folks should police their area and not leave it for others to do.😒
I get really close to 3006 velocity's and everyone with a 8mm.in good shape should you can safely load to 3006 pressures which is what I do but only with rifles in good shape if in doubt have checked out by a pro.
Yes, his uncle custom sporterized it from a garage sale find . It has been completely re-done from it's original military configuration. Lock, stock, trigger and re-blued barrel with special attention to custom machining detail fit and finish.
The eight millimeter is designed for a one hundred and ninety eight grain bullet. That was its original intent. Mine shoots lights out with that grain weight198
Mine likes 170gr.sst.bullets with 55gr h-4350 but have been wanting to try 223cfe & the varget also imr.4064 beautiful rifle I just redid mine I still have the old janzen stock it was a pretty piece walnut and reblued the barrel a lot of work but for my first it came out sweet least I think
Dave, like yourself, I don’t enjoy recoil either. Autoloaders will spoil one. I do enjoy my FAL, my M1’s and my AR rifles. Well I enjoy them all. I guess it’s a man thing.

The factory loads @2,100fps did not recoil much. But once you handload for it, Wow!

Good Mornin' Mike
Nice rifle some good winds for sure
Thanks for watching.
Great video I never knew much about the 8 mm
It is not well known in the USA. But popular in Europe and as military surplus rifles.
Another great video. Thank you
Thanks for watching.

Good Stuff, Strohmeyer!
Thanks
Great job sir,
In Europe we have 187gr 8mm bullet traveling at 2700 ft/s producing 3000 ft/lbs of muzzle energy.
Thanks for your comments here.

@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 Yes -- some of the European cartridges are really great, like the 6.5 Swede and 7mmx57. Thanks for the video.
You should try Ram Shot Big Game and Nosler 200gr CC's!!!!! Yeeeeeeeha!!
Maybe when I was young and had no limits. HaHa!
Nice rifle , I have a scoped yugo m48 i use 160 grain TTSX Barnes with CFE 223 I get about 2900 ft per second and good groups
Thanks for your comment here and for watching.
Interesting cartridge. Ive never pd attention much to the 8mm cartridges.
The 8mm Remington Mag would be an interesting cartridge to load for.
👍 👍 👍
Very popular in Europe from WWII on to today.

Did you ever do more load development for the 8mm?
