In recent times, they did it how you described - with John Stones/CB pushing up to play in a double pivot next to Rodri. What City used to do (2020-2022) was that "on paper" Bernardo and KDB started in the two 8 positions but Bernardo dropped deeper into the Double Pivot next to Rodri while _Cancelo_ moved up into the Double 10, next to KDB, and was the second most creative player for City. City have basically gone back to pushing a FB up into a 10 position but have now forgone moving another player down.
Dude, yes Rico (who I like) played well this season, as well as Saviniho (special). But imo, the player (b4 injured) that has made a real difference and so solved a challenge for Pep, is Mateo Kovacic. 😎😎. He has done a REMARKABLE job in the Rodri role applying his own character and drive in the position.
