    Looks great, that wouldn't be my first choice for a headliner print. I have done two headliners and I did my first one like you did. The second one I sprayed half at a time and it was so much easier. It came out better as well, I had much more control over the fabric.

    I replaced my headliner on my 98 ZJ all thanks to your help Matt. I went with a Star Wars fleece. The only thing that was difficult was lining up the pattern on the center console and the visors. I posted a pic on the website. Thanks again Matt.

    You can use a hypodermic needle and squirt glue in there if you have an spots that come down over time, some people do the visors to match but some don't. You can use any fabric , its doesn't have to be stretchy I used camo pattern from Joann fabric(they have coupons on the website) and the 3M spray glue , let it sit in the sun to cure for an afternoon will help it last longer too

    Matt, I did an install using your video advice and all went well except Super 77 is not meant to do headliners (it's primary use is for art stuff). I found out the hard way, I installed mine using Super77 and the weather got hot for an extended period and it failed. I don't think it never got a chance to really setup. Now I'm going to have to do a redo. FYI, I did a good job getting all the old stuff off and used a cotton jersey material.

    Dude. This is the best diy video on headliner repair I've seen and I'm so happy I stumbled upon it. I hope this works for my 2003 BMW I just got because the headliner is falling and gross and tan and changing it to black would be amazing. Thank you so much for showing how to do such a professional job and posting this video! You're awesome!

    I did my first headliner on my BMW with a suede that has literally no stretch. I too found I didn't love the 90 it does work and it is strong but I used the Permatex Headliner glue and loved it and it was easy to find locally at Advance Auto. I went through about 3 cans of the stuff though on a tiny little coupe. I do think it's important to keep a foam backed headliner style material even though the foam is what ends up failing. It's easier when you're spraying liberal amounts of glue on it as it doesn't let it absorb to the visible surface. I'll be doing this on my ZJ fairly soon as I've decided to get it back to full time street duty.

    Nice video man, and just so you know the glue stuff from under the head liner is actually the foam backing on the original fabric. Its so the glue has a better grab on the fabric and doesn't bleed into the liner. You can go to Joann fabrics and get that same foam backed material but isnt not in any crazy colors like you decided to use... i had to wear sunglasses watching this!

    Everyone I talked to that used super 77 it didn't last very long. I think the fleece you need to throw in the washer/dryer before-hand to get rid of any loose fibers. I used the #90 on mine and it seems to be holding well. Just can't let it sit too long or the glue dries too fast and wont stick

    I just went to the pull a part today and pulled a headliner with the sound bar out of a 2000 model. My only concern is that the dome light for the 2000 was bigger than my 96 dome light and therefore the hole in the headliner is bigger. What are my options? I have the 2000 model dome light with the headliner but I’d imagine I would have to do a lot of wiring to make it work.

  • @DanielCole
    @DanielCole 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Matt, Did you add any sound deadener to the roof when you did the headliner? I'm looking at picking some up on Amazon. Seems like a worthwhile task since the headliner will be out anyways.

    • @xjTalk
      @xjTalk 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original headliner has a kind of a foam backing, flexible though. I think this helps deaden the sound. When we redid the falling headliner on the 99 XJ we purchase material that had this same time of backing.

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Cole no i didn't, the fleece is pretty thick and I would imagine most of the sound comes from below the vehicle anyway.

    That "glue" that you removed with a brush is actually the foam that was attached to the original headliner. As the glue gave way, the foam stayed attached to the headliner and the fabric came loose from the foam. The reason for the foam is for insulation for weather and sound. So it isn't completely necessary, but I wouldn't go without it because if you live up north then you'd have to expect a lot of condensation in wet weather and you will notice ice crystals forming inside the cab in winter. Remove all the old foam, and install real headliner material. Real headliner material has a foam backing. Same process, but it's better for your vehicle.

    • @Garth2011
      @Garth2011 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. just about every headliner material is foam backed. The upholstery shops have it in big rolls, the OEM colors too. Black would have been the better choice in this example !

      I got 9 feet (3 yards) or 58 inch wide fabric. Perfect amount foe the headliner and visors. Id het more if you plan on doing an overhead console too.

      I think there are a couple screws to unscrew then it slides back... if I remember correctly

      BleepinJeep okay i got it out thanks. There was one screw up front an then there are two tabs front and back so you have to slide it back then forward.

    If you haven’t, you should update this and inform viewers that Super 77 is not the proper adhesive to use. Not nearly the heat tolerance required. Risking too much time, energy and money on useless adhesive using 77.

    I am going to buy a bear rug and use it as the headliner. How use the open mouth to keep some glasses and a pin with his teeth.
