Can you start doing more motorcycle videos?
@Rangerscott69 to each his own, I've been using cheater bars for years and have the touch, never stripped one myself. and yes, I always put oil on the seal first, I show that in my other videos too. Scotty
Hey Scotty! Thanks for doing a vid on motorcycle maintenance! Your a great mechanic and great person for helping all of us mechanic noobs ! your the best !
yes, they are really needed on bikes like mine, and work great
@mikeallenbrown1 It's cause I rarely use torque wrenches, I've been doing this 44 years and have no problems feeling it. Of course I use em on head gaskets and plastic intake gaskets where it's crucial. But other stuff, tight is good enough. Plus, on many applications, there is no room to fit a torque wrench in on a modern car anyway due to design compaction.
Awesome to see bike vids :)
I've been using Rotella T oil in my 750 gixxer
It's not specifically motorcycle oil but it works great. Normally I would never have tried it but a lot of gixxer riders seem to be using it so I gave it a shot.
T6- Fully Syn
T5- Blend
T Triple- Dino
@peelout40 Sure, if you pull it insanely. You still want it tight, if you are confused, pull the bar till it's snug, then a little jerk tighter. Scotty
It has a glass window with Fand L, you fill it to F. It's a racing design, so you can check it quickly during pit stops. Scotty
@Michiganborn1969 it's pieces of this and pieces of that with a suzuki 750 gixxer engine in the middle. It will drain any way, but faster with it standing straight up, I put a piece of wood under the kickstand to even it up. Scotty
@zrultima of course, have the charging system checked out by a mechanic, I personally use a midtronics MD 750 and it checks the whole system out in two minutes. Costs over a grand, so find a mechanic who already has one. Scotty
@DsrtWolf Takes all kinds to make the world go around. A few people seem to dislike me, guess they are jealous. there's always a few pervs on the internet, you just have to live with it. Scotty
I agree. the guy i bought my dirtbike from said he's been using regular oil for years and years and has never had a problem. This is a case where lubrication is lubrication.
Awesome video production, watched this before doing my first oil change 👍🏽
@928baller depends on how wild or controlled you are. If wild, get a smaller one. If controlled, get a 600 cc ones, realizing they will go 160 mph . scotty
@NewProductions those are good cars, I've seen em with more than twice that on em. Scotty
@narox you have to rethread it by drilling and tapping it, or by replacing the oil pan. Scotty
the intro shouldve been "rev up your engi- oh shit the oils lights on"
@motorhead1 Hey, you don't want it falling off from vibration. I've used it for years, never stripped one out yet. and it removes em like butter. Scotty
scotty is getting famous,,bout time he is an awesome mechanic, more ppl should know about him watch em,
@ruwithlee1970 me, i'd use castrol 20/50, costs more but really works. Scotty
@MrBuzzialdrin suzuki, hondas, yamahas, they are all well made. Scotty
kawasaki
Nice video. Tightening the drain plug and the teflon tape are a bit overkill. I just snug up the drain plug (its an aluminum block).
@ReggyRay289 No, it's not left handed thread. You're imagining things. Scotty
My 83 Harley Davidson Oil drain plug left side oil tank. Oil filter front of rear wheel middle of swing arm frame. Easy to change.
SCOTTY IS THEEEE MAN keep doing what you do!!!
drive it really fast and see if it runs fine after that and doesn't make much noise after doing that. And check for wreck damage on the frame.
it seals the tiny gaps and works great. You just put new tape on after each oil change, only a super long time would it come apart.
Never even gave any thought about oil changes on bikes like that (I don't know one end of a bike from another). Good vid!
@Morad4000 no, a cheater bar. 1/2 inch diameter sockets, and about 3 feet long.
@bhstone1 I am not from Canada. I'm from Niagara Falls , New York. there are two Niagara Falls cities, one on each side. Scotty
Excellent choice of oil. But I would recommend to any newbe to use a torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to spec or you can damage the oil pan when it is made from aluminium. Also why not simply use a regular copper sealing washer (or alu washer for alu pans) to seal the drain plug? Wouldn't that be a more convenient choice?
Yay finally a motorcycle repair video. Thanks Scotty
To a motorcycle, oil is its life blood. The higher the quality the better! But I have never used a breaker bar to tighten the oil plug. I also found that sometimes the oil will eat the teflon tape. But I still believe this was a good video.
I notice you don't use torque wrench much. Some,if not most of the bellypans on motorcycle these days are made of aluminum. Not saying it's easy to strip them, but it can happen.I usually drive it around for 10-15 minutes before changing oil.Just personal preference.Good tips on your channel though.Always enjoy them.
Motorcycles are alien machines to me. I would love to see more repair videos on them.
@MrTaiese first, find where the noise comes from. Often those 4 wheelers make noise in the front axles when old, most guys live with it. Scotty
@5315andrebras those damn things can be cows to get off, cause the heat rusts and welds them on. I hate doing em myself. Scotty
One small thing, always check to make sure the old seal on the oil filter came off. Is pretty rare for it to stick, but it has happened to me twice on cars! Just a look to make sure it is still on the old oil filter is all it takes to save you some headache or an engine.
Great video Scotty
First time to watch your vids and I f****** love it!!!
@scottykilmer that's awesome its that colour cause then you could tell if its wearing out over time
@ReggyRay289 lol, that was exactly what i was thinking too, It is because the angle of the video. But if you are laying down facing the bolt, Scotty is turning it Counter Clockwise.
Great Video Scotty
Hi, I have an inportant question to ask you, I sold a 1985 yamaha virago to a friend of my a little over a year ago, but he really don't ride it, but has been cranking it up about once or twice a week. It was running good when I sold it to him, but I never let it set up. I had a friend of mine fix the bike when I had it, when I bought it, it was going through gas like crazy, we put cdi box on it, and also drained oil, and found gas in oil, found out it was the petcock, so I bought new one put that on, and it fixed the problem. Also put starter on it, still grinds when you crank it sometime. Anyway the question I have now is because yesterday, got bike running, I drove it down the road, we filled up tank then drove it down the road, ran good, but lots of white smoke coming out of tail pipe, bike died on me, I looked in tank, it was about out of gas, also noticed gas coming out of tail pipe when smoking, anyway battery went dead after cranking it as I was on side of road, lucky enough I was on a down hill, push started it, cranked just enough to get it back to his house. What do you think the problem could be, would it just be because he don't ride it and carbs need cleaned. as my friend took cards off when I had it, and cleaned them, put new sorry I forgot what they are called that sits in where the floats are, looks like a needle that hangs in between the floats, jets or something, they have a rubber point on the end. Anyway I hope you might know what the problem could be. I have to go there today to work on it, and try to clean carbs, hope that works. I will check back later tonight to see if you got my message on this. Thank you.
best intro in the biz
Would love more motorcycle videos!
@Morad4000 they can if they use too much power.
do you ever do repairs/maintenance on snow blowers or lawn mowers? if so maybe you could do a video on that.
Man i love your video, nice and clear!
More motorcycle maintenance video please.
@Chris090883 NO, it could make the clutch slip. Motorcycles have wet clutches, DO not put additives in their oil Scotty
Yea! Thanks for posting a motorcycle video!
thers a few car oils that wont work on bikes. but most will. been studies on this. but yes you were correct. on the shear pressure, and the pistons as well.
@ajclark95 my son's in the 101st airborne, flying around in helicopters.
good video scotty.
@computertekki Only have one at the moment, and you can't have it. Scotty
@serchmarc different than my biking, I want fast and furious, not little and torquey. Mine if a combo 93 suzuki with a 750 gixxer engine in it. Not a forest bike, .scotty
Could you post a video about purchasing a used motorcycle? What is some of your advice mr. Kilmer?
Scotty i bought a brand new radiator hose genuine toyota do i need to put a oil, gasket maker, grease, etc. to make a good seal ??
@5315andrebras I have absolutely no idea what you are asking., Scotty
If you try to tighten the oil drain plug as hard as you can you're gonna damage a thread on the engine since most engines are aluminum and plug is steel.
ya most drain plugs need to be set to 20 foot pounds to prevent that
Cole Skins
Thanks for commenting this mate
@MrDonkeey yes
@SuperchargedMustang5 Na, they prime themselves. Scotty
lol if you drive like a maniac like i do and you dont want the engine siezing up on you.......LOL scotty u are the greatest!!!
wow i am already a big fan of yours and i'm glad you are doing motorcycle videos too. my 2007 yamaha vmax shuts off when i close the choke. it won't run unless i leave it open
can you help me understand why that's happening. it was running fine before it sat for a few months and now this. any help at all would be appreciated thanks Scotty.
Did you find out the problem? I have a 1986 Yamaha Fazer doing same thing. Please could you share what the problem is and steps to fix? Thanks
Hummm. Not sure if I missed something in the video. I even went though the video twice to see where you mention that the bike needs to be sitting straght up to do this job. I have a 2011 V-Star 950 Tourer, I'm planning on doing my 1st ever oil change on as soon as it hits 4600 Miles. The drain plug is on the left and the filter is flushed in on the right under the pipes. Btw. What kind of bike are you riding?
Hey Scotty if I change the oil once a year. Which is better fall or spring? The bike sits the winter in an ingested shed.
Curious ....in all the videos I have watched of yours you don't mention torquing the bolts only tightening them down real good. Is it because you don't bother torquing them per the service manual or is it for making the videos simpler?
I use Mobil one 4t racing 10w-40 in my raptor 700r. The engine is very similar to a motorcycles so I use that. Works better than yamalube.
Hey Scotty, what bike do you recommend for a beginners bike, preferably a sports bike, used or new?. 200cc, 600cc? I'm a newbie looking for his first bike. Thx.
@greenday12511 it's a different colored race oil, it looks weird, that's all. Scotty
eventually it will by wearing the piston rings down from metal contact
@juricacolic your comment is irritating but speaks half the truth. Scotty
Looks just like my 91 kat :O.. But mines red still.
Beautiful bike. Wish mine was this easy to change, the 4 to 1 exhaust goes right under the plug.
when you remove an oil filter, for corn sakes, remember to check that the rubber ring did not stick to the motor. if ya put on a new filter on top-o-old ring, well , look up Lucas Gusher !
@xxdemasterxx oil plug seals need changing. Scotty
hi scotty, whats your opinion on these bikes, old and new vespas?
Got a question for you Scotty. I am looking into getting another used car and I am wondering if 103,000 miles is too many and I may run into problems. It's a 2003 Acura RSX. I would primarily use it to drive to and from school and from Tallahassee to Tampa which is 4 hours every once in a while.
I wouldn't recommend a cheater bar on any bolt on a motorcycle since a lot of it is aluminum. I've seen too many stripped oil pan bolt holes. Just hand tight, then 1/8 - 1/4 turn. I also recommend putting oil into the oil filter before putting it on.
Hey Scott what oil would you use in a high mileage engine? I have a Chevy truck with 240,000 miles and it still runs good I'd like to keep it running long as possible!
Dear Scotty:
I came from Taiwan and watch your youtube very often.
I have a problem for lubricants additives brand named" S.T.P."
"STP oil treatment" (blue bottle), is that really useful?
All the internet says that was a fake additives.
MSDS of STP shows that additives put 1% to 5% Zinc compounds, it's ,80% mineral oil etc...
STP says that additives are their proprietary.
please give me more advices, thank you.
Just because I bought 4 bottles last week.
Engine sound were nice not noisy
Hey Scotty was that you I saw on the freeway riding a wheelie in mid day traffic? I didn't get a good look because you were going so fast swerving in between cars.
if you can find one that fits
Scotty will the combustion leak test kit u have work on the ressorvor style cooling system?
Hey Scotty how long have you been riding motorcycles for ?
Scotty, do you have a Steering Damper to avoid things like tank slap on your bike?
Something like GPR stabilizer I heard those are really good.
Scotty, the tool you use is it a breaker bar or a cheetah bar? What is the size and the length?
@scottykilmer holly macarroni ,,,!!!gixxer engine, this is gonna be my 1st bike ,friends told me to buy a slow one 1st.thaks for the reply i ll have to do trial and error ,thnks
Hey Scotty, I built a stirring engine which is a external combustion engine and I'm using it to charge small devices like my cell phone and my iPad. My design uses a internal crank with bearings and the engine usually runs non stop 24/7 for powering small devices. I'm using full synthetic car oil and the oil has never been changed for a LONG time and the oil still looks like it's new. Should I change it for new oil?
Stirling engine my bad.
Some places will tell you if you don't know what the person who owned the bike before you used for oil, be it: Conventional, Semi-synthetic, Full Synthetic
that you should use semi-synthetic.......and if the bike responds well to it after a change or so then you can step up to full.
scotty, would the same oil be used in the clutch and engine for a 50cc scooter the same as your bike there? thanks
@Epill11 na, it's too oily there, wouldn't hold. Scotty
@happy543210 ya. its probably because the engineers that design these cars and in this case a bike aren't the same ones that work on them. i for one dont mind the oil. every time i go to do an oil change i expect to get my hand covered in oil.
I will be getting a 1983 Silverwing, at least I hope I will be getting it, anyways my question is, can I use synthetic oil even if it is using regular oil, thank you, not meaning to sound dumb but I don't know, thanks Scotty
David Clark best to stick to what you've been using IF it runs fine and doesn't burn oil. You switch to syn on an old bike, it may start leaking and burning oil
awesome, good to know, thank you.
She'll Rotella T. The old 80s bikes love it. Great for vintage flat tapped engines. Google to find out for yourself, run it in my 2 vintage KAWASAKI GPzs.
@hp11208 Yes, I may be old but I'm not slow. Scotty
Hi Scotty, when changing engine oil on cars do you need to put oil in the new filter before putting it back on? they said something about the pressure or something
how could ANYONE NOT like these vids? what air head clicked dislike on this??
Scotty, where is the video on how to change the engine oil for a car? I realize that it's pretty basic stuff, but it would be nice to have a video for it.
@playstation2bigs no, hoses just clamp on. Scotty
Hey Scotty. I've got oil in my spark plug holes and I've already changed the valve cover gaskets. Why is it still leaking? I've placed the gaskets correctly as well so that's not the problem.
