After over 50 years, the theme song popped in my mind, and here I am. I was a kid when I watched this movie, barely understanding what it is all about, but I watched in earnest. The song became my prayer then...
Bought this film thinking it would be interesting in light of the upcoming papal conclave --- Wow, what a film! Superb acting (esp by Burgess Meredith!), incredible plot twists, a ruthless depiction of Vatican bureaucracy -- all masterfully directed by the great Otto Preminger! Epic story of one man's struggle to understand his place in a very threatening and morally challenging world (Nazism, racism, cronyism, etc.). On-location filming of Rome, Vienna, etc. Why can't Hollywood still do this?!?
This is, perhaps, one of the best films ever made and one of the least appreciated except by a select few. I saw it when it first came through the theaters and found it transcending, a true epiphany. I have been inspired by it all my life.
Marvelous ,a fantastic lesson of cinema ,arquitecture ,mathematics ,lights ,shadows ,amazing music ,and a mixture of genius :Preminger,Bass ,Moross,Bernini ,Juan Caramuel ,Palladio,Vitrubio,Apolodorus of Damasco,Bramante ,Michelangelo ....THANKS FOR IT
I was in high school and had to read the book of this movie and make a book report for my English class. I was in a Catholic school so this was mandatory reading. I loved reading it and when it came out as a movie, I enjoyed it even more. I found out the movie followed the book very close. Tom Tryon didn't make many movies because he chose writing instead. I've never read any of his books. I should look one up to see what kind of a writer he turned out to be.
I just love Tom Tryon he was such an underrated actor. He should have got an Best Actor nod for this film, just love this film so much, especially the soundtrack of course.
I adore this movie, I even managed to read the novel by Henry Morton Robinson. It is a beautiful and powerful film showing Stephen Fermoyle's rise from an ordained priest to a prince of the holy mother church and highlights that fact that he is also a frail human being with all the same hopes, dreams and desires as any other..he also has his share of personal tragedies. Well worth a watch!
Otto Preminger really treated Tom Tryon poorly while making the movie. He fired Tryon in front of his parents who were visiting, then hired him back the next day believing Tryon has learned humility.
I think this was a very under-rated film covering racism in America, the rise of Fascism and various things which trouble the souls of many Catholics. It was, I admit, a surprise that this was based on the life of Francis Cardinal Spellman who was far from the reverent figure portrayed oin the film as Stephen Fermoyle by Tom Tryon. I have friends who lived in New York who report that it was common knowledge that the Cardinal pulled his limosoine up to the back entrances of Broadway theaters to take away cute young male dancers for "conferences." Sorry if I seem to be piling on Catholics (to use a sports term) but the knowledge I found out laster about the "inspiration" of this film disappointed me because I thought the film was, in its onw way, an excellent example of epic film-making. Great acting, great direction by Preminger, great score by Moross and stunning cinematogrphapgy by the great Leon Shamroy.
You're not too far off on your information about spellman versus Tryon. Tom Tryon ended up in a gay relationship with a gay porm actor named Casey Donovan, who died in 1986 from AIDS.
Une œuvre qui demanderait à être bien davantage connue. La prise de son est un peu confuse (même pour l'époque) et une interprétation plus récente serait la bienvenue. Merci à Cantabrigidian de ce bon choix.

Fantastic! I remember watching this movie when it was first released in 1963. I was a child then and I loved it, and still do!
I have always loved this unfairly derided film. Moross' music is sublime.
agreed. so melodic and wonderful use of bells
Beautiful and memorable piece of music to a wonderful movie!
One of my favorite films and musical scores. Thank you for uploading.
Love this music
Great score. Really sad to note that almost everyone in the cast and producers had died, some not long after this film.

Henry Morton Robinson who wrote the novel also wrote the very illuminating analysis of "Finnigan's Wake" by James Joyce

I saw this movie when I was very young, it made me want to travel to Europe - didn't know at the time I would end up living there!
My dad always loved this song .

Die Cardinal thema. Very moving.

Of my youth...
Esse filme é sensacional! Poucos conseguiram apresentar, de uma forma tão profunda, o que foi a essência do século XX!
Belo filme. Trilha sonora fantástica. Grande Otto Preminger
Jerome Morross also wrote the theme to Charlton Heston's, The War Lord and the Big Country
My second Moross favourite, after 'The War Lord'.
Remember "The Big country"
I'd only seen Tom Tryon in I Married a Monster from Outer Space.
no Oscar nod for Tom Tryon Really?
