I played this game for what must have been an hour at Toys R Us while my mom and sister wandered through the toy aisles, and it's the game that made me change my mind about the Saturn. After playing this, I started paying more attention to Saturn previews and reviews, and I realized it was the system with the most games that I wanted to play. The Saturn had the best 1996 of any console, and I will fight to the death anyone who argues that point. Alongside NiGHTS, this game was one of the flagship titles of that year's Saturn lineup.
That's crazy... Toys R Us is also where I got my taste of this. Not long after, my brother's friend left his Saturn at our house and I saved up my money to buy it. I played it NON stop.
I got this game (and about 20 others) with a Saturn in the box two years back in a thrift store for about 10€. The guy behind the desk thought it was just a CD player! This game made the biggest impression though, positively stunning piece of work.
I remember first seeing panzer2 on demo. It was the forest level... that huge boss running next to and around you and the way it moved made my jaw drop. As a teenager always being ripped for not gettin a playstation - this (and vf2) was my goto game to show those laughing who ended up not laughing anymore... level 4 with the water and fish also gave me shivers. I used to be a swimmer back then and actually was on way to take part in the Olympics if i pushed on (unfortunately i hit the wall and just didn't improve...i digress) - but the sound of that, the darkness, the transparencie of the fish in the water... it really gave me a sense of careful not to drown....that lift as well. Omg im just remembering this; then the level after in the snow that i remember actually made me feel cold... no other game even to this day has had that effect... i don't know what it was and stupidly im shedding a tear as i really suddenly miss this... (as stated had to sell my collection and i cant emulate this yet....one day ) ~this game had such an impact, even the stupid intro where he couldn't get rid of the kureat (dragon) because lagi 'had a pair of wings...' - at this moment im having serious depression; but sega lord x talking of this amazing game had such an effect on me....thanx dude
My favorite game. I played the demo at a department store and was blown away. Later I bought a Saturn at a Cash Converters to play this game and a handful of others. :D
oh man the fanboyism back then was tragic. I remember trying to get my mates to get a DC but they were all waiting for PS2 despite it having no decent games for like 2 years. And they would call you the fanboy even though they knew fuck all apart from what the sony adverts told them. Is it still the same for kids today?
Such a magical game, it was absolutely stunning back in 1996. I think it holds up today visually better than 99% of titles on any system of that generation

He also complimented the way the music reflects what is going on in the game. Rob Allsetter of Sega Saturn Magazine praised the impressive attention to detail in the graphics and the multiple routes. He concluded that it "belongs up there with VF2 and Sega Rally as the standard-bearer for its genre." Maximum's Daniel Jevons concurred with Scary Larry that the game "positively laughs in the face of any competing PlayStation 3D shooters." Not everybody reads reviews and indepth info.
@@retrostansolo yeah I think overlooked at the time is a better way to put it. I definitely wouldnt call it underrated because people that have not played a game and/or are not familiar with it are not in a position to rate it imo. Reviewers and people that have played it have largely praised it. Anyone that's ever bothered with a Top 20 games on Sega Saturn includes this game, and often in the top 10.
I don't know how many times I have finished this game. A true masterpiece that showed the potential of Saturn. I'm not afraid to say that it's one of the best games I've played to this day
Never will forget one of my happiest Gaming days in my history, went to my local game store hoping some new stuff was out for Saturn, came home with Panzer Dragoon Zwei and Nightwarriors. Two games both so spectacular, so gorgeous, so....perfect, it made my Saturn heart sing with joy. One a 3d polygon rail shooter with a fascinating story and world, the other a silly but beautiful 2d Monster Mash version of Street Fighter for quick stupid fun. I can't wait for the PDZ remake. :)
My second favorite game on the Saturn, only behind Guardian Heroes. Everything about it blew my mind back when it came out. It was like the first game all over again, but so much better. And that soundtrack is fantastic. One of the oldest game music CDs I had in my collection. In a pre-TH-cam 2005, I shelled out a good $80 for it, and it was worth it. I still listen to it to this day, and I hope the remake captures even half of the excitement I felt when this came out so many years ago.
Such a phenomenal game, and an improvement over the original in almost every way. It's worth mentioning that Zwei supported the 3D analogue pad which makes targetting quite a bit easier in my opinion. Great video!
Panzer Dragoon Zwei is still the best rail shooter I've played and is a fantastic showcase for what the Saturn was capable of. With huge open areas that simply weren't possible elsewhere to the water cave level which I still think looks amazing to this day, with beautiful water effects, reflections and surprisingly highly detailed backgrounds in the boss room. Absolutely wonderful game and if you don't have this in your Saturn collection then buy it now
I grew up a Nintendo fan from the 80's, but out is great to see the great Sega games I missed out on, from the Master System, to the Genesis and beyond. Thank you send stay safe!
I remember being blown away by the water effect in the cave stage -- it still looks great in this complex shader driven game engine era. What an incredible game that puts you right into its haunting atmosphere.. definitely my favorite 3D game on the Saturn
I hadn't played it for a few years and was stunned by how good that water looks, that and the background where the boss is looks great. Certainly one of the visual treats of that entire generation
I let my entire Sega Saturn collection go a few years ago. But this was my first game for the system and oh, how I miss this one sorely. Great video. And as a German speaker by including both II and redundant Zwei in the title it doesn't quite make sense. But that was Sega being Sega in the 90's.
One of the best games ever made and also one of the most realised gaming world's ever made. This game is everything and simply a must own and play for the Sega Saturn. So many memories. Panzer Dragoon Zwei is Crom tier. Nice review.
I never owned a Saturn, but a good friend of mine did. Panzer Dragoon Zwei was one of the first games he got. In the end I think I actually played the game more than him. I absolutely love this game!
This game was a masterpiece. Absolutely amazing back when it released. I still hold it in high regard. If Forever entertainment remakes this also they will need to get the gameplay and targeting feel perfect
What i liked about generations before this one is that all systems had its own look! You knew it was a PSX, Saturn, or N64 game on how it looked. You also knew that First party games like Panzer Dragoon were special because the developers did Saturn only features that were not possible on other systems or could not have that LOOK! Anyways nice Video keep them coming that thanks for the trip down memory lane.
This game was my inspiration in becoming a game artist and animator. The second level had such a powerful moment for me as a kid that just stuck to me even now as an adult. I know the remake won't out do the original(nostalgia is a powerful drug), but I hope that I can enjoy the game and just for a moment, feel like that kid so many years ago.
@@nobitanobi I remember! One thing I noticed on my first playthrough of Zwei is that the game took time to let me see the beauty of it all. There'd be a few peaceful seconds here and there, and I really appreciated them.

Found out that the entirety of the Panzer Dragoon series music is on Spotify... so I made a playlist with them all included from the original to Orta. Zwei is still my favorite soundtrack of the bunch... partly because of it's use of Sega Saturn's audio hardware: open.spotify.com/playlist/0q2K5nV2LMc5AkjnpvPccy?si=pJrDnApTQN6ulicbU1HrsA
This game was a work of art,my favourite Panzer Dragoon game is a toss up between Panzer Dragoon Saga (SATURN)& the equally great Panzer Dragoon Orta (original X Box & 360download).There both EPICS!
Honestly there are few games even today that compare to panxer dragoon 2, its story, amazing graphical effects, and music just blew me away. A true classic, and showed just how much better the saturn was than the playstation at times. Like I said, my favorite system of all time. Thanks for showing one of the best games ever made x, in my opinion, awsome. And yes, i hope the next remake is better, and im def all for a brand new panzer dragoon game, your right, it's been way to long.
Additionally. I'd love to see a Guardian Heroes remake. Wonder if Treasure would be about that? They haven't done anything since 2014...and the Streets 4 release has proven there is still a market.
@@1lichfield yes and this port is just like a remake. Much Improved graphics and a brand new gameplay which could be a proper Guardian Heroes 2 in itself.
@TheSeventhForce the only thing I don't like about a lot of the Sega digital series are (esp with Guardian Heroes on the 360) no attract screen. It doesn't open like the CD did. You don't turn it on and the opening cinema doesn't just grab you with that awesome opening. You have a static screen and menu. And have to search in the options just to see the original opening full screen or not. It just away from much of the game in my opinion. And the menu doesn't go anywhere... it plays the title screen music but that's it. It sits there until you DO something... and that irks me to no end.
Bought Panzer Dragoon 2 on release and i've *still* not played anything that has a look, feel, sound or general atmosphere quite like it. It's an utterly unique masterpiece. Yet it's nearly always the first PD game or PD Saga that get attention, especially on TH-cam (so it's nice to see this vid), but PD2 is better than the first game in literally _every_ single way and it's the best shooter on the system. Possibly the best game on Saturn. Top 3 at least. The same goes for the graphics/sound. The music alone is iconic and the best of the series. It also runs so smooth i could swear it's 60fps when playing it, even though it's actually 30. I was SO disappointed when i first see screenshots of Saga because it wasn't a new Panzer Dragoon 3 with the same type of gameplay (Saga's still a great game in its own way though). But just imagine what a PD3 could have been on the even further improved engine that Saga used.
Panzer Dragoon 2 was the 1st game I had on the Saturn. So I have more fond memories of that , than I do the 1st game. The only other games I ever spent as much time playing ( and I mean months of replaying) where Panzer Dragoon Saga, Magic Knight Rayearth and Shining Force 3. Never managed to get my hands on Radiant Silvergun though lol
This game is in my top 5 favorite Saturn Games. The graphics, music and gameplay are awesome! So sad I don’t own a Saturn anymore. I hope a Remaster would arrive in the future. Thanks for all those great memories!
This game is pure wizardry. Every time I play it I am absolutely floored at what Team Andromeda created. PD Saga is impressive as hell too but Zwei is THE technical showcase for Saturn IMO.
Its a huge shame that I never played these games when I was younger on my Saturn, I remembering seeing the first one on a demo back in the day and as always wanted to play but it
Panzer dragoon 1 was incredible , it was amazing to look at bar the mesh effects common on saturn . I couldbt find zwie anywhere but yeah it look amazing . The design is so good ,great areas and really shows that the saturn had what it took in the right hands
Love this game so much, I 100% it, figured out every branching path and mastered every stage to get the most evolution points. So much depth for a on rails shooter. I did not mind replaying the levels again and again because the music and art design were so beautiful. Probably my favorite Saturn game, alongside Guardian Heroes and Dragon Force and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo.
Well that was fabulous. I remember playing all 3 PD games back in the mid 90s and just being enthralled with what I was experiencing. Seriously needs a new installment.
I love the PD games, and I could only wish as much effort had been put into every single Saturn game. I love the soundtrack of the game, it sets the mood perfectly, and the animations (such as this one @5:12 ) is just amazing. Great content as always SLX. Be safe!!!
A game that i could play over and over again in a same day. Few years later came out REZ wich is strongly inspired by PD2 and played over and over again in a same day... Sweet not too old (yet) memories...
I completed this game as a kid and it opened this really cool feature called Pandora's Box that has a ton of cool replay options. Then my Saturn internal lithium battery died and I lost all of the progress! LOL! I still have that Saturn and it serves me well to this day. If any of you are curious about collecting and playing the Sega Saturn, be sure to get a memory cartridge!!
@@drunkensailor112 I have to agree. Adored the music from the first one. When I heard near symphonic music coming from a GAME I was in love. The cinemas looked grest too. Panzer Dragoon and Daytona sold me on the Saturn...I didn't care if the PS1 graphics seemed a little better the fun & musicians were on the Saturn! And that is were I went! So when Zwei did come out I loved the game. Played it over and over but the music didn't have the same... oomph like the first one had. I mean the first time I heard those French Horns (excuse me Horns in F) rip through the opening arpeggios in PD1... nothing can bring that feeling back. PD2 had better gameplay, but not better music. Which is a shame because as I watch the video... I'm remembering playing Zwei... but I'm not really remembering the music... I'm not saying it's not great, it is. It just didn't have a lasting musical hold on all things Panzer unlike PD1 and Saga's music did.
I know the game also had a 16 by 9 mode which is insane for the time! I hope the remake of 2 fully delivers right out of the gate and not need several updates later!
Well Sega needs to stop doing stupid crap like making the remakes exclusive to the Swtich when the other two consoles could do way more with the game graphically.
I loved this game back in the day and it truly was a memorable experience. Be sure you do an update to your review of the first remake after the patch drops. They say it will significantly improve the game; starting with a 60fps performance increased, new animations for the dragon and more responsive controls.
Panzer Zwei is my most favorite of the entire series (which is awesome by the way)! It was one of the first games i bought for the Saturn, which itself i only could afford a year or so after it's launch.
Great game, better than the first one in every way. You should make a video about Panzer Dragon Orta, that I still play on my Xbox One. Cheers from Brazil!
I can't wait for the Panzer Dragoon 2 remake because if the Panzer Dragoon 2 remake does well I want to see a Panzer Dragoon Saga remake then after that I would love to see a Shining Force 3 remake
I really like your videos! They are very well done, informative, fair to the reviewed game and just so much fun to watch! Thank you for your hard work Lord X! By the way, Panzer Dragoon Remake has had several Updates which included new things and reduced/eliminated (?) Input Lag and optimized controls. I would really like to hear your opinon on it. Personally I haven't played it, I pre-orderd it from Limited Run Games. Stay safe and keep on keepin' on!
This game plays so much better than the first thanks to the cursor not pulling back to the center constantly. It's a real issue in the first but this game with the 3d pad just feels great

It did receive a HD update on the xbox 360, I'm not 100 percent sure but you may be able to play on Xbone.
@@1lichfield yes and this port is just like a remake. Much Improved graphics and a brand new gameplay which could be a proper Guardian Heroes 2 in itself.
@@ardilosinho me too, it was one of my most played Saturn titles!
If they make a new panzer dragoon, it should be a vr game. The gameplay is PERFECT for VR. Imagine the immersion!
Google Panzer Dragoon Voyage Record.
so glad this is getting coverage!!!
So many memories.. I still remember the bliss i felt when the ship was shot down. Oh, lost 90s i miss you..
8:48 - I remember seeing this song all over Kazaa way back, always labeled "GREATEST SONG OF ALL TIME" lol
Epic! Zwei is amazing!
The best looking Saturn game in my opinion. Its gorgeous!
Bought this game at the time and just loved it,the music was just something else and I still play it today.great game.
I don't need one of your videos to remind me why "Panzer Dragoon II Zwei" is great! I'll still watch and enjoy it anyway.
This game is in my top 5 favorite Saturn Games. The graphics, music and gameplay are awesome! So sad I don’t own a Saturn anymore. I hope a Remaster would arrive in the future. Thanks for all those great memories!
One of my favourite games of all time, on my favourite console of all time. Panzer Dragoon II is a very special game.
This game is pure wizardry. Every time I play it I am absolutely floored at what Team Andromeda created. PD Saga is impressive as hell too but Zwei is THE technical showcase for Saturn IMO.
I finally beat this game tonight. I'm blown away by the quality present in these titles.
Panzer Dragoon 2, Wheeeeeei
Be safe!!!
I recently put in the work to get 100% shot down in one playthrough across all routes and had a blast mastering zwei. It never gets old
Such a great game! I was also impressed to find out this game actually supports widescreen.
What beautiful game, still looks amazing to me now.
A game that i could play over and over again in a same day.
Few years later came out REZ wich is strongly inspired by PD2 and played over and over again in a same day...
Sweet not too old (yet) memories...
one of the best videogames ever made... exclusive for sega saturn , my favotite console for all time
I completed this game as a kid and it opened this really cool feature called Pandora's Box that has a ton of cool replay options. Then my Saturn internal lithium battery died and I lost all of the progress! LOL! I still have that Saturn and it serves me well to this day. If any of you are curious about collecting and playing the Sega Saturn, be sure to get a memory cartridge!!
Feelsbadman. I got a second-hand Saturn so I also bought a new battery then I could 100% the game and get the "Winged Death" title.
I've never been interested in Saturn, but I want to try this game.
This game made (still makes) me so proud to own a Saturn!
Sweet new credits
This game looks like it’s way more fun than the first one.
It was a massive upgrade in every respect.
@@Sega_Dreams every respect except the music
It is a lot more fun
Amazing game. Killer soundtrack. ❤️
G5ㅎㅁㅈ59194
I know the game also had a 16 by 9 mode which is insane for the time! I hope the remake of 2 fully delivers right out of the gate and not need several updates later!
It did! Widescreen
Best panzer dragoon and best on rails shooter of all time imo. Masterpiece
Another GEM SLX !! Bravo !
panzer dragoon zwei is awesome I’ve played it a couple times but I’ve never gotten far also happy 25th anniversary of the Saturn launch
AKA Panzer Dragoon II: Rootin' Tootin' Dragon shootin'
It'd be awesome to get a new Panzer Dragoon game if the first two remakes do well!!
Don't forget about Orta
Well Sega needs to stop doing stupid crap like making the remakes exclusive to the Swtich when the other two consoles could do way more with the game graphically.
Finished the game two weeks ago. I am still very impressed. A remarkable game indeed.
Panzer dragoon Zwei is my favourite in the series by far and my favourite on rail shooter even above Star fox and sin and punishment.
I loved this game back in the day and it truly was a memorable experience. Be sure you do an update to your review of the first remake after the patch drops. They say it will significantly improve the game; starting with a 60fps performance increased, new animations for the dragon and more responsive controls.
Was always something funny the Japanese obsession with German words
Panzer Zwei is my most favorite of the entire series (which is awesome by the way)!
It was one of the first games i bought for the Saturn, which itself i only could afford a year or so after it's launch.
Favorite railshooter in the series and hope the remake does it justice.
My favorite game on the Sexy Sega Saturn! I think this game is better than any rail shooter on the PS1 hands down! Great video SLX
Funfact 😃: "ZWEI" is german for the number "2" (two). So it's simply pronounced "Panzer Dragoon Zwei"
Ja undt ja.
I hope they get around to remaking Saga and Orta next.
Panzer dragoon 2 zwel is a good sequel and the music is a work of art. 😀👍🎮
4:41 In this game, the shoot system looks like a lot the passage of tails in Sonic Adventure with his tornado
My first Saturn game
This game plays so much better than the first thanks to the cursor not pulling back to the center constantly. It's a real issue in the first but this game with the 3d pad just feels great
Wow, I didn't realize how awesome the 2nd game was!
Such a fantastic game, I can play it anytime.
