      Since Dragon Force 2 now has an English patch, you could now actually be the 1st person on TH-cam to review it! Since I have my Saturn chipped, I've been wondering if I should skip straight to DF2 over DF1?

      SLX, I have a lot of 2-D fighting games for Saturn and Dreamcast. I use the RAD2X for Saturn(smoothing off) and the GEKKO HDMI box for Dreamcast. I think the 2-D fighters look much better on Saturn. They look more pixelated on Dreamcast.

      @@gundamsdm I dunno, I bought Dragon Force 2 because I loved the original so much, but it was a different play mechanic, music was different and of course I couldn't understand a lot of the storyline. Is is possible to download the patch and put it on a disc iso to play? I might breakout my Saturn and play it again.

      Remember when Working Designs used to sell some games on their site? I remember they sold Magic Knight for 55 bucks there and i felt it was so expensive haha. I bought it and i dont regret it.
      That game goes for $800-1000 on ebay…
      i really hate this resell culture we live in. It has gotten exponentially worse after 2020.

    The Saturn was a underrated console. I even underrated it back in the day, because i bought a Saturn back in the day and my friend loan me a bunch of Saturn games and most them i did not like. Then i sold my Saturn to my friend older brother months later which i regretted because X-men Vs Street Fighter came out shortly after. Then in the mid 2000`s i bought a Saturn again with 5 games on Ebay for 50 dollars which included X-men Vs Street Fighter and its sequel and Night Warriors. And i started to discover that Saturn had a lot of hidden gems by watching youtube vids of Saturn games. Now i have at least 35 Saturn games and plan to get more. This is by far the best Sega channel on YT.

    Great video.
    Dragon Force... I made it my mission to find and recruit as many secret characters as I could, in each scenario.
    Took me 20 years to find the secret dimension in Shining Wisdom. There are several secret scenes to be found in Albert. Got all the Rainbow Amulets in Rayearth. Enjoyed 60 FPS in OutRun.

    I loved Working Designs from the day I played through Lunar on its release. All the pop culture references and jokes were great. This was a time when video games had nothing to do with mainstream culture (at least till PS1). Having mainstream references in a Sega CD game made it sooo cool. My Working Designs collection had a separate section in my collection that I treasured. I was lucky to get the games used for less than retail before they became collector status. I was at 100% on Sega and about 90% on sony when a flood took it all away. It is absolutely the most missed part of my collection that I lost, (which included a full Saturn and DC fighter/shooter collection). Who remembers the 1st time they read the back of the manual in a WD game? Thank you Victor for all you did.

  • @felman87
    @felman87 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh man, can you do a video on Working Design games for the Sega CD. Those were some real bangers. I mean, I have yet to meet someone who has played Lunar 1 and 2 and doesn't at least remember them fondly. Working Design's translation team was top-notch and injected quite a bit of humor into games. I still find myself chuckling to dialogue from Nall in Lunar 1 or just everyone in Lunar 2 to this day. It's fantastic.

    @bananonymouslastname5693 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dragon Force just is that good.
    I have, like, 90% of what Working Desgns put out, including their Spaz label stuff. They were just about the only outfit putting out nice limited editions, foil-embossed full color manuals, translation notes, etc. You just knew that you were getting something slick whenever you picked up one of their games.

  • @muddyduck64
    @muddyduck64 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bless you... I asked for a Working Designs tribute and you delivered. I hate to admit that I wasn't aware of a couple titles from the saturn, but now I know. Thumbs up. Oh, by the way, I do know that it was Working Designs adherence to putting out a quality product that ultimately was their undoing. They refused to put out a title that did not meet their standards and it ultimately shut them down ... but thank god they had those standards. It would be good if others had those standards. Another thing... I do like the translations to be as close as possible, but I understand that certain things which would fly in Japan doesn't work here - and vice versa. You look at all the pop references and inside jokes on popful mail as compared to panic CD.... and you can see.

    For anyone that doesn't know, Magic Knight Rayearth is one of those few games for the saturn where the save file is compatible with both regions. if you've been playing the game in japanese and want to pick up from where you left off on the english version the game will read the file and also works the other way with it.

    @thuggeegaming659 ปีที่แล้ว

    About the critique regarding WD, it wasn't just the liberties taken with the translations, it was also pretty major gameplay changes. The changes made to Popful Mail, artificially made the game more difficult by increasing the stats of the enemies while decreasing your own. I agree that if it weren't for them, we wouldn't have gotten English translations of many Japanese games at all, including Dragon Force which is one of the Saturn's best games. But the critiques are valid, and so are the romhacks that reverse the WD changes.

It was here that i found Shining Wisdom and i fell in love with Working designs because of this game. Later on i would discover the awesome Dragon Force and the funny Albert Odyssey. I don't mind them taking liberties with the translations. After all, if you're trying to sell a game to an English-speaking market that mostly isn't into Japanese culture, you have to account for the fact that your consumers aren't going to catch or enjoy a lot of references and allusions you'd get from a strict translation. The problems came when they also changed the game behavior, such as making Silhouette Mirage a lot harder and more grindy.

    Since you pointed out the fact that Iron Storm, Albert Odyssey and Magic Knight Rayearth were never released in Europe, here are some points about the European releases of the other games to complement your info.
    Yeah, Dragon Force and Shining Wisdom were actually released in Europe. In the case of Dragon Force, the European version carries out the same Working Design localization of the North American version, which was licensed to Sega Europe to publish it themselves (this is a Sega game after all). However, in the case of Shining Wisdom, the European version features a totally different localization done by Sega Europe itself. This is a very similar situation to what had happened to Ragnacenty/Crusader of Centy/Soleil on the Mega Drive, which had a North American localization done by Atlus and a totally different European localization (not just in English in this case, but also in German, French and Spanish) performed by Sega Europe and its various European offices.
    Obviously, the Sega Ages compilation had nothing to do with Working Designs in Europe. It was released by Sega Europe quite some time before the North American release in fact, so in this case Working Designs just licensed the same combined European release for North America.

    Part of the reason I went with the Saturn before the PSX was the upcoming Lunar remakes. I was heartbroken when Sega pissed off Working Designs, causing them to announce that Lunar 1 and 2 would be coming to the PSX exclusively. I snagged Dragon Force and Shining Wisdom for $30 each, used but in great condition, at Babbage's back in late 97. Shining Wisdom isn't that great, but Dragon Force is one of my favorite games of all time. Magic Knight Rayearth I bought in summer 2000 off ebay for a whopping $45. I remember the over the top battles with a million sprites being an eye catcher but tbh, I don’t recall the game itself being much of an improvement of the genre. Take my opinion with a grain of salt.

      Thanks for the info, I'll at least look into it further if I do eventually buy it, I get burned out on more indepth games in the genre so if it's simpler or not that deep or challenging I might be able to enjoy it.

    Hi Sega Lord X. I'm a huge fan. 👍
    I just saw the title of this video and had to watch it immediately. I wondered if you would mention Iron Storm, and it was the very first one. It was one of my favorite SS games. It was fantastic.
    I'll always have fond memories of Working Designs and the love they showed with every game they released. It was a sad day when they stopped publishing games for Sega hardware. Much worst when they closed shop. Working Designs was a gem in gaming industry.

    Thank you so much for this video, I never knew that about Working Designs, like many, I thought they had developed the games 🎮, but they helped to localize them, I can't imagine a world without Popful Mail and Lunar, thats what I grew up with, so thank you, I appreciate that company way more now thanks to you.

  • @EtherBoo
    @EtherBoo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Surprised you didn't mention this.
    One of the reasons WD is generally disliked is because they had a habit of cranking the difficulty up on games to the point where they're often unenjoyable. It wouldn't shock me to learn this is why Albert Odyssey has such a high random encounter rate.
    One example I can speak to is Alundra. While not the best game ever made, I got fed up half way through after feeling like I was attacking enemies with a broom. Turns out WD cranked up the difficulty by making enemies much harder to kill.
    I can handle the sophomoric humor, but difficulty cranks are ridiculous. You've even taken issue with them with games like Streets of Rage 3. Others often complain how the difficulty was cranked through the roof of Ninja Gaiden 3.
    Some games have fan patches to fix the difficulty changes called "Un-Worked Designs"

    Holy crap did I ever spend hundreds of hours into Iron Storm!!! I beat the game as Germany and evolved my units to wonder weapon status. Go-229 stealth fighter bombers, the invincible Maus tank, panzer grenadier units armed with panzerfausts and stg-44's. I one day noticed foo fighters in the game as well. Yes...UFO's lol. During some battles you would see one hanging in the sky above the battlefield. I curiously went through the sound test on Iron storm to hear UFO and laser sounds. Somehow UFO's fight or maybe become units in the game. Its known the Germans worked and researched saucer designs before and during the war. Still intersting to find in the game.

    At the end, I bought Magic Knight Rayearth for $20 @Toyrus. I was a fan of the anime series. I saw Working Design logo which mean that it is a quality good game and plus the fact of my favorite anime, I got to buy it at a cheap price. I still got it to this day.
    My favorite is the Dragon Force. It is by far the best SRPG game to date.

    i have played dragon force more than any game i have ever played. would have loved to see an official English release of 2, it supposedly fixes some of the flaws. always remember how they reversed the cheering and booing on the search events. archers are useless, mages must be micromanaged, so many retreats, hell, in your clip seeing the dragonman text box got me on edge cause here comes the combo.

    You know, Magic Knight Rayearth is actually based on a Japanese manga by acclaimed all female art group CLAMP, I'm actually a big fan of their work, though Magic Knight Rayearth isn't my top favorite of their stories, I'm more into Cardcaptor Sakura, but this series is still really good, and still a great showcase of their fantastic artwork. A little side trivia they tend to put older characters from their past work into later stories of theirs, one of the characters in Magic Knight Rayearth reappears in Reservoir Chronicles Tsubasa.

    Great video. Just found this because I was trying to figure out why Magic Knight Rayearth goes for so much now...I didnt know it was the last ever released Saturn game to be released in the US. I was heavy into the Japanese Saturn Games, with exception of the Working Design games. Saturn was an under appreciated system due mostly because some of the great games that came out were only released in Japan. My favorite game is also Dragon Force. I was kind of upset when I learned that they had variants on the disc and memory card sticker. You wouldn't know that unless you had seen a bunch of them. Love seeing videos about the Sega Saturn.

    Thanks for posting this x, when i owned a sega saturn a long time ago, i didnt get to play all of working designs games. Pretty soon im picking up an odroid xu4 with over 180,000 games on it, luckily im getting the entire sega saturn, and dreamcast game library's with this purchase. The reality is it would cost me thousands to get a saturn, upgrade to hdmi, and buy physical copies of these games. At long last i ll finally have the entire saturn library, never got to play dragon force btw. God knows i will be spending LOTS of time with that one

    Working Designs was my favorite company back then and I had Dragon Force as well.
    And unlike a lot of people I think their translations were okay and didn’t alter the spirit of the game much.
    What I didn’t like is how they intentionally made games more difficult for the US market. Popful Mail for Sega CD is a good example of this. They made items cost more money, gave the player less health, and made the enemies stronger. I don’t know why Working Designs felt it necessary to alter the gameplay of many games to increase difficulty.
    There are some fan-made patches that remove these difficulty changes while keeping the translation. It is “Unworked Designs” I believe.

    • @av4010
      @av4010 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the increased difficulty was done to deal with people beating the games too quickly. Other games had this done for the U.S release too, not just Working Designs. Some examples are Dino City, Contra Hard Corps, Seventh Saga, Streets of Rage 3, and Castlevania Bloodlines.

    Definitely agree with you on the translations. Yes I would like more faithful translations, but there's no way I can hate on a company that was willing to take a risk on products no one else would even consider. Accurate or not, I'm just glad we got to experience stuff like this at all. Robotech is another good example of the same concept. The modern era of translations has spoiled us.

    I have almost every Working Designs game. Victor Ireland was really ahead of the times. They were releasing obscure RPGs long before Atlus and others got popular over here. I'm still supporting him and his new company Gajinworks. Bought the special Summon Night 6 box set from their site. Goes for quite a bit now. Too bad Bernie Stolar cockblocked them from releasing Lunar for the Saturn. Shining Wisdom actually fits into the other Shining games coming right before Shining the Holy Ark. Played Iron Storm a lot especially with a code that lets you play co op. Panzer Dragoon Saga is my favorite Saturn game but Dragon Force is great.

    I bought Rayearth when it first came out. I saw an article about it before it was released, and I was super excited to get my hands on it. I still have it, although the case is cracked now. The front cover has a rainbow foil effect that made it extra cool. One of my fave parts was listening to Umi call Alcyone the B word in her diary. XD They voice acted the crap outta this game.

    Working Designs deserve a lot of credit for bringing games to the English speaking audience. It wasn't until relatively recently though that I realised how much they tinkered with the games other than translating them. I just recently discovered the Unworking Designs community that removes the changes they made to game play while keeping their translations.

    I'm one of probably 5 gamers that Dragon Force didn't click for. I loved the idea, and bought it because so many others loved it, but once I fired it up, I was unimpressed. Not taking away from those who love it - I certainly love the look, and the premise and I wanted to like it - But after a few tries, I ended up selling it off when I needed the cash. I only sometimes regret it, but remember that I never really felt that game the way others do/did.
    Love WD games as a whole. They did great presentation, and really seemed to love their work. I was sad to see them go.

    I bought a Saturn the week it was released back then. Sadly like many others I became enthralled with the PS & N64 once they released and I never bought any of these WD games. The Saturn became my 3rd option and my money ended up going to PS & N64 games. I vividly remember seeing the cover art on display at stores of these releases and being amazed but never pulling the trigger. Damn you Nintendo and Sony!!!
