    Just for ease of comparison:
    3:02 Alnico 2 Bridge
    3:33 Alnico 5 Bridge
    4:04 Alnico 8 Bridge
    4:39 Alnico 2 Neck

    A2 bridge & A5 neck were the clear winners here. Bright and balanced with a smoother attack in the bridge, and clear/full in the neck.

    Way to be Dylan, that was really cool to hear. I always wondered that question myself, thank you for that video. It was 5s in the neck and 2s in the bridge for me. Congrats on the new design. Cheers

    1) Great video, Dylan, as always really!
    2) I just did exactly this with a bunch of different pups that I mounted on 'sleds' to use in my 1981 see-thru 'Dan Armstrong' guitar (that my father and I made) that has that interchangeable pickup scoop swoop). This was specifically for a pickup-brand-shootout, and it worked great!
    3) One of my favorite bridge pups has been the Gibson 'Super Humbucker' (I believe developed for Gibson by Bill Lawrence) whick I think was a ceramic magnet pup. Why no ceramics in this test?
    Please keep these fantastic vids coming!!!

    That's a great-sounding A2 pickup, particularly in the bridge. The string separation is outstanding. The A5 was my favorite in the neck. The extra magnetic flux helped keep it crispy. I would have thought the A5 bridge/A2 neck would be ideal, but I guess not.

    A long time ago, I discovered, (by comparing different guitars, then changing the pickups on one guitar), that I actually prefer a higher output pick up in the neck, and the opposite in bridge.
    I know, it's personal preference, but it's what works for me.
    Great video!

  • @joeyskar
    @joeyskar ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I feel like the 2 sounded really sweet allowing us to hear the strings as they are whereas the 5 sounded like it had a little more breakup and the 8 sounded like it'd be great for metal maximizing signal. I've always been a fan of lower output pickups for their clarity and how they play with OD pedals and drive on amps.

    • @qua7771
      @qua7771 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Normally, you would adjust the pickup height differently for the best sound in each type. That makes for a slippery slope in doing a "fair" comparison. Weaker magnets like more height. Stronger ones have a wider usable range in distance. A3's are picky about height.
      Another challenge here is that pickups may be wound with a magnet type in mind, so any particular magnet might not be well suited to a given pickup.

    8.5K is the sweet spot for my favorite sounding bridge humbuckers, congrats on the release of this one, I hope you sell a lot of them. Do you find that there is an ideal winding count related to what number of alnico is used? Do you like to charge magnets fully, or partially? And does a weakly charged alnico V if charged to the same strength as a fully charged alnico II still sound different?

    Of course, all this is subjective, and changes depending on the style of music you're into... for me and me preferred style, the A5 was a clear winner. I hardly ever use the bridge pup, always either the neck or middle position. But that said, this was a highly informative video, so thanks!

    I've become a fan of Alnico 4. It kinda solves the "problems" you find with most magnets. Is the pickup too bassy with A5? A4. Is it too spongy on the low end and needs more clarity on the top with A2? A4. Mids too harsh? A4. Not enough mids? A4. lol

    • @iridios6127
      @iridios6127 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is very difficult to understand what you wrote. But the most likely answer is - no. To be completely sure, touch some kind of piece of iron on the pole pieces, if they stick, then everything is ok.

  • @arkaitzcarrasco2216
    @arkaitzcarrasco2216 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So if I understand well... you charge the magnets to its's full potential and you didn't normalize the audio files after all? got it right?.... If thats the case, it's really impressive how the A2 sounds even louder than the A5 and the A8. And fuller over the frequency spectrum like a lingle coil-ish. really cool video 👏👏👏

  • @devilsguitaristmusic
    @devilsguitaristmusic ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm very interested in A4 pickups, from what I've heard they're like a cross between an A2 and an A5 and that sounds exactly like what I would like. I'm somewhat interested in A3 but I heard they're even "softer" than A2, so I'm not sure about them, I would really have to try them and see.

    in the bridge, the alnico 8 hands down winner for me. in the neck they are all okay with the 5 having a slight advantage over the 2, and the 8 having an ever so slight advantage over the 5. i would suspect someone who prefers a single coil sound would prefer the alnico 2. its all subjective.

  • @domoniquebrooks816
    @domoniquebrooks816 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No Ceramic? People always say they make a pickup harsh/ice-picky, but I've never had that experience. I swapped a Ceramic into my bridge humbucker that had an A5 and I liked it. While it made it a bit brighter, It wasn't harsh, but it pushed the front end of my amp a bit harder which eliminated my need for a boost pedal.

    This video kinda asks more questions than it answers... The stronger magnets clearly sound thicker and hit the amp harder, but what if you dialed down the input gain on the amp? Would you get a similar sound or would each magnet still have its own character? Or, what if you adjusted the other parameters of the pickup to get similar outputs from each? would they sound different again? Would that be different to adjusting the amp gain to compensate? Do they each feel different to play?
    Fwiw I think I preferred the sound of the A2 in this test - clearer than the others, no muddy mids.

    The 2 & 5 sounded almost the same in the bridge, maybe the 5 was a bit more upper-middley. The 8 in the neck sounded great, almost like a paf or burst bucker in the bridge position. First impressions, subjective, listening over phone speaker. But that 8 in the bridge position, I'd play that almost all the time.

    I prefer Alnico 5 in most pickups humbucking or single coil. Just seems consistently most pleasing to my ears. Alnico 2 would be second but I still prefer Alnico 5 in most circumstances. It has a clearness about it and good articulation. Dont care for other magnets other than Alnico 2 and 5. Alnico 8 is too much. Alnico 5 strikes the best overall balance.

    The A2 had better clarity than the others. The A8 was crunchy and tight. The A5 was in between having more crunchy than the A2 but lacking the tightness of the A8 it was a bit more fuzzy/ruff around the edges to my ears. I'm generally more of a single coil guy. I've never played an A8 bucker, but out of the pickups i have played, when using a full size humbucker i prefer a moderate output pickup with A2 magnet. I'd be interested to here how the A8 does under high gain. I guess it depends on how hot the coils are wound, but to my ears a lot of hot pickups tend to get muddy when they go into a high gain amp. I feel like the A5 in this video might end up in that camp. Non of them sounded bad. but my preference would be the A2. You can make a clean pickup dirty, but you can't make a dirty pickup clean.

    • @216trixie
      @216trixie ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm starting to agree. Single coil or double coil makes a difference. And after that I think a good well made quality pickup will sound better with more tone than a lot of cheap poorly made pickups. After that, these differences are so tiny I don't know that they make much of any difference. Definitely not as much as the speaker.

    I can't hear much of a difference and certainly am not playing like you are so I'm not sure why you aren't explaining how it sounds and plays differently.
    It takes a long time to search the internet to find frequency response graphs to actually tell us exactly how changing the magnetic field changes the frequency response. I think you probably know exactly how it changes but for some reason you will not tell us and you won't show us these graphs that you probably have somewhere stuffed away somewhere.
    It's always frustrating listening to your videos because you think "he's actually going to show us something, he's actually going to teach you something like you used to". And instead, it's always another sales pitch.
