I just came upon this performance. The listener would have no heart or soul not be moved by this music. Who cares where it comes from! Like Duke Ellington said, "If it sounds good it is good." This music and the performer ROCK!!
I don't care about the "nationality" of a music. I liked it ... I am Arabic but I like the Armenian, Turkish, Greek, Kurdish and Persian intonations. each have a nice flavor and taste. Long live music ;)
yay, i love fretless instruments, its so much easier because you don't have to figure out which one you have to be playing. and shifting positions is so much easier too.
i work for qa turkish man. and this does sound a bit turkish. in that region anyways. this sounds absolutely amazing. id love it if someone around here taught that intrument. i want to learn it. if all else fails, ill have to teach myself to play it
A very very good performance. I've always wanted to play the oud, but I have not had the chance to play this instrument. Once again, a very good job:)!!!
Folks, there's no way to say where the Oud originated. Who cares, its been a staple instrument from Morocco to Persia for at least 2000 years and the shape of the oud is the glyph the Egyptians used to describe music. There are fantastic oud players from Armenia, Turkey, and all over the Arab world. Making statements about where it came from originally is not only pointless but impossible. Plus, if the creators of the instrument wanted it all to themselves... they did a very poor job of keeping it secret...
There are some visual sources showing something similar to it from around 3000 BC from mesopotamia, but it doesn't have to be connected to oud, the first sources that are foolproof come from todays Iran from sassanid era
great instrument isn't it??? i love ud, lute, and other eastern and mediterranean instruments! have you ever listened to cretan lyra?? it goes perfect with lute or ud tunes. more mediterranean style of course but is still great! try psarantonis or sth.
@mygoodname this is an arabic melody, if it sounds a lil bit like spanish, maybe its because arabs colonised in Andalusia (currently spain) which the spanish adopted many of their cultural aspects...
Just to clarify, if my poor English can help me with that - eastern music is more fuzzy compared to western which is more quantized compared to eastern. For those for whom oud is part of their culture western style is different because they don't get that fuzziness when listening they listen to this music, which does not mean it is good or bad. BTW i like both above mentioned music styles. p.s. i think it is meaningless to debate over "mine is bigger than yours".
The oud goes as far back as Pharonic Egypt so I am told. I'm pretty sure it is the mother of the guitar and all western lute like instruments. If you listen to a spanish guitar piece you can hear the arabic music influence. Because Spain was conquered by the Islamic empire from circa 750ad to the final expulsion in the 15th century. During Spains Islamic period it was like a real culture center of Jews, Arabs and Christians who got along very well. In fact when the european christian Spanish retook Spain(well it was incremental for hundreds of years), Jews and Muslims depended on each other for mutual aid to hide or run from the Spanish Inquisition. Andulusia, one of the great cultural periods of history. ya male(of european descent) american(i hope and pray for the dismantling of the US empire and the restoration of the US republic as an equal, peaceful, contributor, and loving member of the world's family of nations)
+Ymous Anon According to Wiki: "The oldest pictorial record of a lute dates back over 5000 years ago, on a cylinder seal from the Uruk period in northern Syria, Mesopotamia. Acquired by Dr. Dominique Collon, the artifact is currently housed at the British Museum." This is certainly ancient instrument and I did not know they could make such delicate instrument so far back. Amazing !!
wow! ap 1:40. He's playing both accompaniment and melody(or lead) at same time. I have never heard that when playing with a pick. I have only heard that with the all fingers and thumb method of plucking of classical, calypso, and some old blues guitar(john hurt comes to mind) players. and im talking about counterpoint not just finger picking chords. amazing. Do any oud players ever play without a pick and have all the fingers of the right hand free?
Aió .... Then , now it's time to built together , but at first both -we , Armeninas, and Turkish - gotta resolve our past, clear our present and have consciousness of what great things we could do TOGETHER !!!
non arabs find difficulties pronouncing it since our letters are diff in arabic its oud (u know when u get hurt and go like aghhh the end of that, that comes out from deep in your throughout is the O of oud put that with ud and u have oud the way we say it )
hi every one...pls can someone help me... i have an nice turkish oud and i want tune it in arabic tuning: FADGCF or in turkish tuning: F#BEADG my question is...is it possible to tune it so?..can it dmg the oud because it´s such an high tuning or is it feasible :)
@Dauphinplayer This was probably brought during the golden age of Islam (as a culture, not only as a religion), the abbasid caliphate in Al-Andalous. in this time (7th-13th century): christians and jews could live peacefully on the same territory, no one never need to convert. and culture mixed together to create all what we got from spain to india into multituds of wonders, as flamenco, guitar and other dances...
for your information the word "tar =strings" came originally from Persia ,and yes persia was the first civilization to use stringed instruments ,and therefore the oud, guitar, buzuk etc are all originally from Persia ,however the Oud was only an evolution of ancient Persian instruments so do the guitar ,peace out
I just came upon this performance. The listener would have no heart or soul not be moved by this music. Who cares where it comes from! Like Duke Ellington said, "If it sounds good it is good." This music and the performer ROCK!!

Well , search Oud find root of music. Every instrument you know today already existed before thousand of years.
@nykteridas no, greeks made the bouzouki and outi from the original lute,
What are you implying?
The classic arabic tuning is: C F A D G C .. good luck :)
