Jessie has a fair point that a lot of the McDavid hype is being based on two games, but if you're going to say "What about everything Barkov did in the previous three series" you have to extend that to McDavid as well. He started the playoffs with a five assist game against the Kings, and had at least a point every game that series. Vancouver probably contained him the best, but he still scored 9 points in 7 games including three points in game 6 with the Oilers back against the wall. Finally McDavid was all over the Western Conference Final -- starting the series by scoring the 2OT winner, and ending the series with that fantastic goal around Miro Heiskanen in game 6.
The highlight stat shouldn't just be eight points in the last two games. It should be the fact that McDavid has 15 points in the six(!) games where the Oilers or their opponents could be eliminated, with the Oilers being six-for-six in those games.

Feel like Jesse contradicted himself on the Connor Smythe talk. Said since Leach set a major record it makes sense to give it to him, yet didn't acknowledge that Connor has already broken the assists record and is above 40 points too. Seems similar enough to me.
It's also an award for MVP of entire playoffs and uh... Connor has double the points Barkov does as well as absolutely dragging this team to some win when the squad was behind.

The gap between McDavid and the second-best player in the nhl is equivalent to the distance between Sunrise and Edmonton. To have 8 points in back 2 back SCF games whilst going against BARKOV is bonkers, truly one of the best players ever to put on skates. Florida needs to match Edmonton’s desperation for a full 60 minutes. Edmonton has really outworked them frankly to every loose puck and have made the better plays. Its going to be a great game 6.

Barkov +/- 0 and 21 points. Half of what McDavid has done and allowed 11 more even strength goals against while on the ice. Barkov 12 5 on 5 points, McDavid 25.
He's Double Barkov offensively and blown him out of the water Defensively. So why does what he's done through 3 rounds not count. Just this series? Over 5 games Barkov has 4 points and is Even. McDavid has 11 points and is +4 in 5 games. Again this series alone. More than double the offense and besting him Defensively.

I get what Jesse is saying about McDavid shouldn’t get the Conn Smythe if they lose game 6, but he’s judging McDavid on his Cup FINALS performance vs Barkov’s entire playoff performance.
You have to extend that same curtesy to McDavid as well. Boiling it down to just “he had two really good games” is disingenuous if you’re not going to even mention how dominant he was in the previous 3 rounds.
Even if you say it has to go to Barkov just going off of his finals performance, why? Game 1 Barkov didn’t shut down McDavid at all, Bobrovsky did and stole the game. Game 2 was a low event game and Barkov did well there, but game 3 was a coin flip of a game where McDavid managed to claw the Oilers back in it on Barkov’s watch. Then there’s games 4/5 and kinda hard to claim Barkov shutdown a guy who hung 8 points on your team.
Jesse said Leech got the MVP in a losing effort since he set the goals record in a playoff run. Why doesn’t that apply to McDavid who’s already surpassed Gretzky for assists? Just as historic of a stat.
Barkov is a great player, but what McDavid is doing is truly historic and should be the PLAYOFF (not finals) MVP.

Jesse, Connor has 42 points for the playoffs….of course he is in the running for the Con Smythe, win or lose

  • @marklepischak5777

Another thing to consider with the Conn Smythe is the votes have to be in by 10 minutes to go in the third period in every potential Cup clinching game (thanks for the info CJ). What if it's tied at that point and McDavid has a couple of points? Who do you vote for for?
That being said, I think McDavid should win it regardless. Smashing the cap era points record is enough for me, chasing down Gretzky is the cherry on top if he gets there.

Yes and No, You have to take in account in the 80s there was no such thing as interference, you could open ice hit, there was much more hooking and holding. Goalies could play the puck.
The rules of the game today is to allow skilled players to do their thing. Equipment has improved, skates are better, not playing with solid wood sticks anymore.
You're right goaltending changed from stand up to Butterfly and it's much harder to score if you get to the net.
But getting to the net is easier and the speed of a shot is faster.
Think there is advantages and disadvantages in each era that makes this records incredible.

Jesse the con smythe is technically for the whole playoffs and McDavid set records and only has Gretzky and Lemieux ahead of him in the record books. It clear its McDavid had the better playoffs. It disingenuous to say McDavid has only 2 good games in the finals but compare Barkovs prowess in the other rounds when Connor McDavid set the record for most assists in a playoffs.

Youre wrong about the barkov not shutting him down narrative. Look up the stats when hes away from barkov. Majority of his points have come when hes avoided him on the ice. Barkov has shut him down when the matchup happens

The part that makes your point moot, is that McDavid just dominated the game on Panthers home ice, they could have matched him up against McDavid and they either didn't, or couldn't. Barkov didn't shut down McDavid.

    • @andrewminidis9776
      @andrewminidis9776 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@Marixa1979 that doesn't make the point moot. When he was on the ice at the same time his production didn't happen. That's the point 😂 you can match up your lines for face-offs but live line changes mix things up and you can't always have them out vs eachother 100% of the time. That's not how the game works, man 😂😂

    1. The Mascon MacTavish goal line stop in the WJC final in overtime is number one. He batted the puck out of the air on the goal line and then scored
    2. I disagree with Jesse’s argument about the sequence of games not mattering. I think McDavid scoring these points while facing elimination and that pressure makes it 100x times better and more impressive

Why you might also remember Kyle Maclean is because he scored his 1st NHL goal against the Leafs this year on a really nice move when a puck found him coming out of the box. The Isles also have his dad as an assistant coach (for now) and there was a nice moment that went semi-viral about his dad's reaction to it trying to hold back being too excited

And if the return includes a player with a signing bonus due July 1, MLSE could also agree to pay that, increasing the trade return. Just ask your friends Rachel Doerrie and Mike Stephens.
