I bought one, during the test drive I started out in second gear...no problems, shifted into 6th and went up a hill no problems no pinging knocking or noise. its comfy and i actually had to move the seat foreward to drive it. Im 6 foot 2. Its a good overall car, and the mileage and the tax break doesnt hurt. It looks nice and drives great. Alot of fun. I would recomend this car to anyone who needs a daily driver or car for long distance trips
So far I love this car. I have the TDI Sportwagen with about 2400 miles on it so far. I just came back from a New York to Indiana road trip and averaged about 33-34 miles per gallon (that's U.S. gallons) highway. That is on an engine that is not fully broken in and I averaged about 75 to 80 mph on that trip. Considering also that the car was stuffed with luggage and everything we needed for our 10 month old I am very happy with it. You can't go wrong with it.
I have one, and oh boy, I cannot say nothing but beauty from the jetta. it got everything! its low consuming low polluting and incredibly safe, not to mention the fun to drive it. I fully recommend it
The Audi A3 is a great looking car and it is a contender in this year's LA Times green car of the year award. Last year, the VW Jetta TDI won the award with their new clean diesel 2.0 liter engine. This year, the TDI powered Audi and the VW Golf TDI are contenders, so I'm happy that two 2.O TDI engine powered cars in the race as like I said earlier, I went with a TDI Jetta today and signed a contract. This is after 25 happy years with Toyota and TMMC, both have been very good to me.
the DGS gear box it's not jerky at all, what you guys noticed is the turbo lag while in low revs below the 1200 rpm's or in very low speeds because it shifts the gears in order to maintain good fuel economy, but all this is not a problem because with the DSG you have the driving mode, the sports mode and manual mode. I guess it's just a matter of getting used to drive a DSG and knowing the car.
My Dad has one - the diesel is the quietest diesel I have ever had trouble hearing. The engine doesn't knock and runs smoothly. It also had pounds of low end torque giving it great performance without racing the engine.
You're correct, I have a 99 Camry 4cyl with 233,xxx miles and it still gets at least 32 mpg. I'm using synthetic and I commute 3.5 hours one way to work on monday and 3.5 hours home on friday. If a car company needs a test bed driver, let me know, I put the commuter miles on.
I'm not waiting for anything, I already own two of the most dependable cars on that list. I bought these cars brand new in 2006 and 2007 and I had an idea that they were dependable but did not know that they were the best at not braking. When I was younger I didn't know much about cars and just liked them depending on how fast they were and how they looked. I ended up having large repair bills, because most automakers don't put a premium on dependability.
I was never trying to get you to change your mind about the Jetta. I was just trying to get you to see that Hybrids are just as good on gas as diesels. You guys see this as a competition of who can get the most mpg. I saw a video where the Jetta & Prius drove to see which could get further on a tank of fuel. Prius ran out at 579 miles, while the jetta ran out at 733. Jetta people in the video were like we won!! So go ahead and enjoy your Jetta, because I could really careless about what you buy.
For some cars like the RX8, and E36 M3 the auto kills prices by thousands of dollars, and I've used manuals in freeway gridlock without a care. It is true that autos will slowly get better, but there is still no substitute for a perfect heel-toe downshift. It just feels right.
I just bought one. It just seemed like alot more for the money than other cars in its class. Fun to drive! Only bad things is, I find myself going on 200 miles trips everyday just so I can drive the car =P
Toyota states not one Prius has required a battery replacement due to malfunction or "wearing out." Toyota further states that the (NiMH) battery packs used in all Prius models are expected to last the life of the car. Supporting this are first- and second-generation Prius taxis in Canada that have reportedly traveled more than 200,000 miles without suffering any battery problems. As for the sweet sound... Well most of the time the Prius doesn't make any sound, since the engine is usually off!
I own this car and many previous WVs before it. All of them have made it to 250k without any issues. Other then the standard things you need to change like the timing belt and such.
I applaud the wave of turbo diesels finally making it to US shores. I am holding out for the Subaru turbo diesel...AWD in a flat four boxer configuration. Awesome!
If you drive a lot in the city, definitely go for a Prius, otherwise, a Honda Fit or a Mini Cooper would be more fun to drive and end up just as expensive to buy/run/resell as a Prius over a 4-5 years period. There are reasons why Honda, BMW and VW can still sell millions of fuel efficient gas/diesel cars, but at the same time, making them really fun to drive.
Hi! Im from europe, were the most of the cars are runnig on diesel. And one thing i can sure to u. Its a very good choice if u want a economic and ecologic car. On VW u can get a very good and reliable TDI engines with good torque and HP. And can even be more eco than the hybrid cars! Go to a VW seller to have a test drive or try to get more info, about TDI, in an european VW website.
I'm just learning about diesel cars, I just did the deal on a TDI Jetta, I should be picking it up next Saturday. How is the diesel fuel better in Europe? From what little I know, it seems like the Europeans have been dealing with diesel engines for a long time and have a lot of skill at this.
I commute one way on monday and back home on friday. I used to commute two hours a day times three day days a week for the same company doing a similar job, so 7 hours a week is only one more hour, but i'm only home on the weekends now.
I never understood people who can't use a manual, it's as easy as breathing to me, and manuals are still cheaper, more fun, lighter, more economical, and usually faster than the auto, and always faster in the twisties due to better torque control to the wheels. Standard shift is simply the best.
The only major thing the Prius has that is not available on the Jetta is full automatic climate control as STANDARD. The Jetta TDI? Oh, VW decided not to offer Climatronic on the TDI (for the North American market) , so you get the same 3 knob semi-automatic Climatic system that's on the old Golf.
While it is a 11.9 gallon tank, you can't put more then 9.5 gallons in it. I have run it do to empty with the last bar blinking the hole day and the most it took was 9.5 gallons to fill it. On the east coast of America 87 gas is $1.89 and Diesel is $2.83. You are right you get around 45mpg in the winter while in the summer you get 55+. The Prius gos 108mph which is fast enough. Like I have said before it is my wife's car. Both Prius and Jetta are to slow for my taste but both are great on gas.
The older Jetta TDI was rated at 51 MPG highway - anyone think that we'll see those high numbers out of this one? I kind of doubt it. The high 40's for the highway though (since VW claims better economy) would be a very nice trick up it's sleeve.
@tyboy2400 The 50MPG models were 90HP, the new one is 140HP. So its not as bad as it seems. I suspect the EPA crap on the cars has reduced the MPG too not to mention making everything more complicated under the hood. I have heard that if you drive these new cars carefully you can still get high 40's MPG. It's easy to put your foot in the throttle when it has more power.
it runs great, the TDI JEtta wagon, but if you drive at 140km/h and pass alot, it only gets 740km to the tank.... i like it, but the Yaris is actually better on gas when i drive it hard
@mlg779 Before commenting ensure it makes proper sense. That THINg wobbles like it's made of cardboard if it's slightly windy, and anything other than clean, dry pavement it's actually scary driving the thing. I found a huge difference between the Prius and my 20k Jetta TDI, and a big difference between the Prius and my $70000 Land Rover. The Jetta costs less than the Prius, gets almost the same MPG except it sips diesel which costs almost a dollar less per gallon where I live.
The best way to go green is to take public transit or ride your bicycle, since I can't use my bicycle for work, after comparing Prius and VW TDi for months and verifiying with their 2010 models, I went for the Golf Wagon TDI, with manual 6 speed. Although the Prius is technically a superior car, I just can't stand Toyota's toy looking interior. There really is a big gap between Toyota and Lexus but I find the 2010 Golf with the Audi style new dashboard has pretty decent interior.
I don't know...I only drove it once and it felt jerky...but you can read the same thing in many professional reviews. Whatever the cause it should be fixed. The car is awesome...I bought the manual and love it.
I think I may still go with an Acura TSX. It will get about low 30mpg's at freeway speeds, and I don't have to worry about replacing a $1600 battery at 175,000 miles.
i'm referring to your comment where you said in JD Power, they said VW is getting better but then in another repeated post, you takl about how VW is on the bottom of the list.
@EpicXXProductions Iron and steel can be refined without creating a miles wide dead zone around the refinery. Take a look at the production of nickel-cadmium batteries.
Because they did get better. Like I said I don't hate. There are a lot of people lying about anything and everything on youtube, just to try and make their point. I like to be different then other people. If I say something is bad and then find out later that it has improved, I will say it has improved. It doesn't hurt to tell the truth. At least not to me it doesn't. Other people could care less about the truth, they just want to make something look bad, becasue they don't like it.
Two years ago I got my wife that Prius and she loves it. If I would have got her that Jetta she would not have features like Bluetooth, Keyless entry, 500watts DSP 6disc sound system, VSA and more. She also would be paying $1 per gallon. I don't know what you guys call fun these days but they both suck as far as performance gos.I mean really, both do 0-60 in about 10sec, 1/4 mile in 16 something and have a slalom time of 64 mph. She gets 57mpg every tank and pays $1 less per gallon to do it.
VillejeanRyder35, according to your profile you're 17 and you're telling me you already graduated as a mechanic? Right... Also the cylinder head/coolant leaking problem was caused by a bad and early batch in 2003 or so, it has been fixed AGES ago. And cooling down the turbo is only needed for older cars and when using non-synthetic oil. 10 minutes is WAY overkill anyway.
In areas of high motor vehicle traffic, such as in large cities, the amount of nitrogen oxides emitted into the atmosphere can be quite significant. Carbon monoxide, with the chemical formula CO, is a major atmospheric pollutant in urban areas, chiefly from exhaust of internal combustion. It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless, yet highly toxic gas.
I like Jetta, but I like they to make also another Version, like a Golf MKVI GTi the lights from 2010.. and also bumpers. this one also good too this one of old version.
They all use very little gas! Pick the one you like the best, and don't hate the rest!City/Hwy/Combined Prius 2010 - 51/48/50 Prius 2004 - 48/45/46 Insight 2010 - 40/43/41 HS 250 2010- 35/34/35 Jetta Tdi 2010- 30/42/34 RX 450h 2010- 32/28/30
Regardless, It went into production and was available to the public. But this still has nothing to do with what I was discussing, so I have no idea why your digging into it so much. My point was that a Hybrid will never deliver the performance/quality drive of a diesel powered car. They have diesels in Europe making 70+mpg. No matter how you drive them. Hybrids aren't the answer to saving money on fuel, More efficient engines and alternate fuels are.
Ripper must be a Toyota lover! Good luck pickn up a date in a Prius. He must not take into account the sales for the TDI Jetta in Europe to so then we will see who takes the lead.
I test drove this the other night.....its a fantastic car overall....however I would go with the manual transmission. For whatever reason the DSG in this model is jerky and feels much less powerful.
@mlg779 The Jetta TDI starts at $22,900 and the Prius starts at $23,500. The Jetta TDI gets better mileage, costs less to buy, costs less per gallon where I live and isn't an embarrassing, compromising car that people want to run over with their Hummer. Plus, I don't have expensive toxic batteries to replace! The sole reason for me buying my TDI was because my Land Rover gets 13.8 MPG and the VW Jetta on the highway if you really baby it can get 65-70MPG, average being 48-52.
2009 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 46,000 original owners of 2006 model-year vehicles. The study was fielded in October 2008. While it is nice that your 6 friends have perfect cars that never need to be worked on, others are not so lucky.I am not giving my opinion, I am just telling people where to go to find out how dependable a car is since they are going to spend thousands of dollars on it.I would rather hear what JDPower has to say then 6 of your friends
exactly, and the opinion of the majority is that the jetta is "better." i'm not trying to argue, i'm just saying, this is why people "seem to like it more." besides, 1 second usually means a lot :P
The standard civic and accord are GREAT cars. Overall, diesle engines last alot longer. They can be pricey to work on. In my state diesle is cheaper than low grade unleaded. were the mileage is made up is in town with start and stop. the jetta is averaging me 32mpg in town. My brother has a civic hybrid and its a nice car. doesnt do as well in town and doesnt have the pick up the jetta has. But has lots of room and is good on teh hiway
I don't like small cars, but she does. I don't dislike ether car, for me to buy one for myself would be a major step down for me. You must always buy what YOU want, not what everyone else likes. I could really careless what you or anybody else buys. Its your money...
It does NOT make 263 ft/lbs of torque.......it makes 236 ft/lbs of torque, but I still love the car. I got the Sportwagen with DSG in candy white with black Khartoum wheels in 18".
is this all true? i ll buy my car on February and im looking the TDI but i dont know how good it will be or if i should buy it. Someone could advice me? Thanks.
@fastalan 6 Speed manual is old school ? its economical as hell. of course a 8-speed automatic would be better but there are stil cars sold with 4-speed automatic. This is oldschool !
You forgot to mention how amazing standard in a traffic jam. Besides, the resale value and demand of manuals is terrible. Currently a manumatic is the best transmission. Once automatic gets ironed out, it will be much more superior to anything else.
They were all tested the same way, not just the TDI. All the cars on that list can get higher ratings if the driver tries to. The point of having these cars, is that you shouldn't have to worry about driving like an old lady to save money on gas. Sure it's fun to see how high you can get the mpg, but it only cost $25 to fill a Prius and my wife can drive 500+ miles. By the way, the Prius has an electric A/C, so we can run it all we want, with no loss of power or mpg. 54mpg over the last 6K miles
For some strange reason, and I can't seem to finger out why... The VW people who made the video forgot to mention that the Prius has a much smaller tank. In fact its almost half the size of a Jetta's. Oh, I know why they hid that fact! It takes only 8 gallons to fill the Prius and cost $16 ($2.00per gallon). While it takes 14.5 gallons to fill the Jetta and cost $41 ($2.85 per gallon). They paid more then twice as much in diesel just to go only 154 miles further. They both use very little fuel!!
i think it's mainly because the automatics give lots of transmission problems. we have 2 jetta tdi's, ones a stick and the other's an automatic. the stick runs like a dream but the auto needs transmission work :/
@braydenmartindale your sports car goes 0 to 60 in 9 sec, and my prius in 10 sec. jetta is rated 31mpg city ande 40 mpg highway and if you say it goes 49.8 mpg that means that in the same driving conditions with my prius i will get at least 60mpg. I also do not have to change fuel filters, brake pads ( with my driving for at least 150000 miles), plus reliability of the toyota prius does not compare with jetta. you will be lucky to reach 100000 with no problems.
Taxi Prius drivers have no time running slow on battery mode, trust me, I live in Vancouver and all airport Prius taxi drivers are zoom zoom, they are fast driver. Time is money, no time running slow on battery mode. These cab companies are better off with a Jetta TDi wagon due to VW's reputation in diesel reliability and big amount of useable torque when hauling luggages. It was only because the latest TDi wasn't available in larget qty 2-3 years ago and these company decided to go with Prius.
Exactly.. Your Escort Pony is 18 years old and probably two sizes smaller than the Jetta. Let's not even have discussions with regard to emissions. I'd probably say your Escort Pony would lose in a drag race to this Jetta as well :-)
@austinman1995 yes but my stepmom drives the automatic and trust me she doesnt drive it hard at all and just the other day the tranny finally gave out. we have three tdi jettas now two are sticks and ones automatic. both sticks are in great shape. also the rear brakes on these things ALWAYS lock up which is another contributing factor to the transmission problems.
Dude, you need to revist the the past, it's already a known that a car burns less or the same fuel with AC on, than with windows open. Windows open creates a more drag than the AC at highway speeds.
$1,6oo battery, U are confused........... I pull a 8x5 foot utility trailer with my TDI. Biggest load so far was 2,2oo pounds of mason sand. Also hauled a 1,5oo pound Bakers Pride Pizza oven with the TDI 125 miles.. Try that with a Prius....
Be happy with the car you have. Don't hate the car you don't have. Remember what I said? They all use very little gas! Pick the one you like the best, and don't hate the rest!
I know you were kidding. But what I was saying is true. The Prius is not a "toy car". People will say the Prius is slow and can't handle, but the reality is the Jetta TDI is only 1 sec faster and has the same slalom time of 65mph in the cones. To me they offer little "performance". Young people seem to like the Jetta more because it's torque and has a tight suspension, while the Prius has a smooth engine set up with a soft ride. They are both good cars but VW people hate for no reason.
When NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) react in the presence of sunlight, they form photochemical smog, a significant form of air pollution, especially in the summer. Children, people with lung diseases such as asthma, and people who work or exercise outside are susceptible to adverse effects of smog such as damage to lung tissue and reduction in lung function.
And i forgot: I bought my prius with $21900 and jetta starts at $25000. Man, jetta does not make sense for me compared with prius. If you compare it with something else maybe makes sense. My nissan has 3.5 v6, but i bought prius in for good mileage, and for saving money.
@braydenmartindale Prius gen III id rated at 49 and 51, Prius gen II is rated at 48 and 45. @luminaeus In Europe Prius is more expensive than here, one of the reasons is not very popular and is true, that you have more choice for diesels than here.
I bought one, during the test drive I started out in second gear...no problems, shifted into 6th and went up a hill no problems no pinging knocking or noise. its comfy and i actually had to move the seat foreward to drive it. Sorry to hear about your bad luck. We've had a 2001 and 2003 and we've never had any serious problems
This looks like a great car. If I was in the market for a new car this would definitely be on my short list.
31-41 mpg 0-60 8.9-9.5 secs. Sweet. Very good fuel economy with still pretty good acceleration. Nice combo, this car should be more reconized.
For some cars like the RX8, and E36 M3 the auto kills prices by thousands of dollars, and I've used manuals in freeway gridlock without a care. It is true that autos will slowly get better, but there is still no substitute for a perfect heel-toe downshift. It just feels right.
Very very underrated car.
I just bought one. It just seemed like alot more for the money than other cars in its class. Fun to drive! Only bad things is, I find myself going on 200 miles trips everyday just so I can drive the car =P
Fast Fact
In the month of Oct. 2009, the VW Jetta TDI sold 1,839 units. In that same period of time, the Toyota Prius sold 14,569 units.

Deisel is makes so much more sense than hybrids. Good fuel economy, costs less, cheaper to maintain, better performance.
Thank you VW for the lovely Jetta. Hope they are also able to make available the fantastic new Golf with the 70mpg Diesel.
I applaud the wave of turbo diesels finally making it to US shores. I am holding out for the Subaru turbo diesel...AWD in a flat four boxer configuration. Awesome!

why not bring the dizel golf to US too?
I'm getting 37 mpg in aggressive around town driving and you can find diesel for cheaper than 87 octane. I paid $2.18 just yesterday.
One of my friends drives one of these, its very nice; I like it.
I never understood people who can't use a manual, it's as easy as breathing to me, and manuals are still cheaper, more fun, lighter, more economical, and usually faster than the auto, and always faster in the twisties due to better torque control to the wheels. Standard shift is simply the best.

@dogyouare actually i believe the newest tdi is 4 valves per cylinder which makes it a 16 valve instead of an 8 valve

i own an 06 tdi. its 0-60 time was rated at 11.5 seconds...i had it chipped, and split that in half. 0-60 in about 6 seconds. and i still get 45-50mpg
amen! plus, replacing the battery for a hybrid can cost up to ten thousand dollars!!
@EpicXXProductions
Iron and steel can be refined without creating a miles wide dead zone around the refinery.
In the past, I would drive 50,000 miles a year and I have driven just about every car that is sold in the U.S.
Does it have DPF and water cooled EGR? does it inject fuel on exhaust stroke or does it inject into the DPF?
In areas of high motor vehicle traffic, such as in large cities, the amount of nitrogen oxides emitted into the atmosphere can be quite significant.
Carbon monoxide, with the chemical formula CO, is a major atmospheric pollutant in urban areas, chiefly from exhaust of internal combustion. It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless, yet highly toxic gas.
I like Jetta, but I like they to make also another Version, like a Golf MKVI GTi the lights from 2010.. and also bumpers. this one also good too this one of old version.
They all use very little gas! Pick the one you like the best, and don't hate the rest!City/Hwy/Combined

I am thinking about getting a TDI. I do about 90%/95% of my driving on the highway. Any guess on what kinda mpg i could get?
Can you get this car with every option and leave out leather or do u have to get leather
2009 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 46,000 original owners of 2006 model-year vehicles. The study was fielded in October 2008. While it is nice that your 6 friends have perfect cars that never need to be worked on, others are not so lucky.I am not giving my opinion, I am just telling people where to go to find out how dependable a car is since they are going to spend thousands of dollars on it.I would rather hear what JDPower has to say then 6 of your friends
exactly, and the opinion of the majority is that the jetta is "better." i'm not trying to argue, i'm just saying, this is why people "seem to like it more."
besides, 1 second usually means a lot :P
Thank you for the thumbs up guys. Their are people who still know what diesel engines should be like. Emmissions free, loud, smelly, and smokers.
The Prius and the Jetta have the same slalom speed of 64mph and the same 1/4 time of 16 sec.
after the brake in i'm getting close to 48MPG but that all depends on your foot. ;)on a average of 65 to 80 Miles per hour i'm getting 44MPG

I don't like small cars, but she does. I don't dislike ether car, for me to buy one for myself would be a major step down for me. You must always buy what YOU want, not what everyone else likes. I could really careless what you or anybody else buys. Its your money...
yes! i have a 1999 jetta all mexican all Genuine German parts build in the Favulous Mexico!
in addition to that, just look at what that (small) engine does and how the car performs, considering that it weighs more than the ford explorer!
Thanks.
@luminaeus it also leaves unsafe mines and large areas of land tapped, contaminated. and unusable for anything other than a wasteland.
Toyota Prius - 15,000 sold Oct. 2009
VW Jetta TDI - 1,800 sold Oct. 2009
I'll take this over a crappy hybrid any day of the week. I would go the manual transmission route though. More speed and better fuel economy!
My 1996 VW Passat TDi faithfully gets 46-50 mpg.
I'd probably say your Escort Pony would lose in a drag race to this Jetta as well :-)
@austinman1995 yes but my stepmom drives the automatic and trust me she doesnt drive it hard at all and just the other day the tranny finally gave out. we have three tdi jettas now two are sticks and ones automatic. both sticks are in great shape. also the rear brakes on these things ALWAYS lock up which is another contributing factor to the transmission problems.
..its 100% built in Mexico w/German parts. Still good right?
Dude, you need to revist the the past, it's already a known that a car burns less or the same fuel with AC on, than with windows open. Windows open creates a more drag than the AC at highway speeds.
$1,6oo battery, U are confused...........
I pull a 8x5 foot utility trailer with my TDI. Biggest load so far was 2,2oo pounds of mason sand. Also hauled a 1,5oo pound Bakers Pride Pizza oven with the TDI 125 miles..
Try that with a Prius....
I would SO much rather have the wagon version of this car over the sedan.
didn't they say it was 50+ mpg?
Be happy with the car you have. Don't hate the car you don't have.
Remember what I said?
They all use very little gas! Pick the one you like the best, and don't hate the rest!
i rather get the jetta tdi looks better then the prius and good luck with your prius when something brakes.
@kladusa1990 yeah, i realised when i posted hah
@braydenmartindale Prius gen III id rated at 49 and 51, Prius gen II is rated at 48 and 45.
@luminaeus In Europe Prius is more expensive than here, one of the reasons is not very popular and is true, that you have more choice for diesels than here.
Well, know because of the new numbers which were lowered for 08.
if you want a better handling car and better interior you can wait for the audi a3 tdi
which is coming out next year
This is a new engine, I'm pretty sure you didn't manage to put 80k on a car that came out as a 2009 model...
I have the 2010 is the different from the 2009?
