This is the Rise and Fall of Gambit in Destiny 2. Gambit has seen its ups and downs throughout the years with many pointing to just removing the game mode completely citing that it can't be fixed! Gambit released all the way back in Destiny 2 Forsaken to a massive amount of praise, but some issues were noted, then advanced on in Gambit Prime later on! Destiny has seen changes for Gambit in Beyond Light and now in Witch Queen, so here's the full story, I hope you enjoy!

Honestly Gambit is better now with that damage gating. It prevents instant wipes of the boss’s health bar like what happened back when Lament broke the game.
Also gives the other team a fighting chance in general since you have time to invade when it takes at least 4 (or 6?) primeval slayer stacks now.

They were on to something with Gambit Prime. Sure it needed tweaking, but the addition of armour sets really added depth to the gameplay. Yet, instead of expanding and refining the mode, Bungie just removed most of the meaningful changes brought in Prime. Whereas crucible has largely remained stagnant, Gambit has actually devolved throughout its lifespan.

A New Player's opinion on Invader Swap: It's super nice during the mote collection stage, but once you're at the Primeval fight it just turns into a "who can Invade harder" race yet again and extends those parts of the game way farther than they need to.

Other aspects like mote collection, blocker clearing, boss damage, are all nearly negligible compared to getting heavy/special ammo and invading often and effectively.

I love Gambit as a mode. You got the fast-paced, hectic as hell enemy wave killing portion on the one side, the blockers, mote draining & sweaty invasions on the other and the madcap mayhem of murdering the Primeval in under 4 milliseconds straight in the middle.
However, there have been different iterations/styles of Gambit since it first dropped for Forsaken and a few have been good but most have also been pretty much unplayable.
Bungo needs to have a serious look at what people loved about Gambit so much, what didn't work out the best and find that sweet spot of a middle ground into making 'The Perfect Gambit.'
I don't want to hate this gamemode any more than I need to cause I feel that it's the perfect gap between grinding stripes & PvP.

Ever since Beyond Light, we lost quite a lot of content due to sunsetting (strikes, PvP maps and a couple of Gambit maps too), so saying Gambito should be deleto'ed is gonna hurt the community in a way they'd never expect.
I for one want Bungo just to tell the team that overlooks Gambit as a whole to sift through all the good, the bad and the balanced in order to find the solution Gambit needs.

Minimise the invasiveness for less frustration perhaps

  • @WuceBrayne-lw6re
    @WuceBrayne-lw6re 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

I have a lot to say about gambit but one of my biggest problems is the lack of variety in the gamemode. It astounds me to this day that they decided to get rid of the tangled shore and dreaming city maps, because those are still in the game. I also think that part of the problem is that there isn't much difference between the maps or anything. For about a year now, I have been mentioning to my friends an idea that I have for a new gambit mode because I actually think it can be really fun (and was before the health-gating and exotic damage crises of 2022).
In my proposed version, instead of the boring usual bank in the middle and 4 battlefronts, it would instead be one big long strip of land with opposing teams starting off on either end. In the middle of the territory, there would be a primeval as usual, but the primevals would be in the same large arena in the middle, and would be fighting each other, little to no damage to each other. In order to get to the boss, you would need to kill envoys and bank motes to open 3-4 massive gates that they have put in between your team and the boss. Once you kill the envoys and their cronies, you can bank the motes that they drop in one of the following slots: send more low level ads to the opposing team, gain ammo for your fight against the boss, set traps that the opposing team has to avoid (like a water hazard to make their combat arena smaller and have the players have to do a jumping puzzle to bank the motes), or you could add a one-time per gate level damage boost to the opposing team's primeval, meaning that yours would have less health when you got to the boss. Each of these options has a cost, and you will only gain a set number of motes from the envoys so spend them wisely (motes will not be able to be carried between gates). As each team progresses closer and closer to the boss, the enemies would become more difficult (more health, more enemies, more variety, slightly less cover, larger spaces, etc.). One thing that would not be a factor in the game would be invading. You cannot specifically go to the enemy team's side to kill them and make them drop their motes. However, you can take a portal to the enemies side and try and make their fight more difficult in a different way. Once you reach the halfway point to the main arena, and then again in the main arena, you will be presented with a single use portal (one each time). If you enter this portal, you will be sent to the enemy team's original starting point ("homebase") and have to hunt and kill a high value target in order to teleport the enemy team back one gate and have to repeat the envoy phase (at a reduced difficulty because it would be bs if they had to kill high level enemies at the same volume if they had already cleared that gate) and bank a set number of the dropped motes to open the gate. Once the invader has finished hunting, they must race back to a set portal in the enemy homebase to be returned to their team (if they die, the setback doesn't occur). If a team is set back, they can gain another one of the mote options listed above though, so it is risky to send a team backwards. When a "homebase" invader is hunting the high value target, the team that is being invaded will be presented with their own portal to put them halfway towards their own base (so they can make it back in time, but not be put right on top of the invader to give both sides a fighting chance) and can try and kill the invader and stop the setback. This is the only aspect of PVP in this mode so as to try and cut back on the amount of cross interaction between damage values etc etc. Once your team breaches the final gate, you must try and nuke the boss to the best of your ability based on the mote banking decisions you made earlier. If it is possible it would be fun to also have an option within the arena itself to let the opposing team try and continue to bank motes to add more small enemies or health boosts to the boss but at this point, it is just a race to see which boss dies first. Once that is complete, the game is over and you can rinse and repeat however much you like.
I know this is just a comment section, but I have been mulling over this for years and Evan's video finally shed the light on just how far gambit has fallen, and I just wanted to spread the love I used to have for this gamemode, and try and reach others who agree/have ideas for what I have above. I am happy to have a more in depth conversation about this! Thanks Evan for the great video as always!

Gambit - make it like Arenas in Apex Legends. No weapon loadouts allowed just a rotating pool of weapons to choose from. You purchase weapons & blockers between rounds. The more your team banks, the more funds you'll have access to for the next round.
Abilities, Armor perks & Supers work as usual but all charge at their base values making an even-ish playing field.
REMOVE THE PRIMEVIL PHASE and add in Primevil Escorts in each base spawn as a mini boss instead. (ex: if hostiles are at the steppes, then after the enemies are cleared a Primevil Escort appears). Any blockers purchased between rounds also pop up with the Escorts. After 3 mini boss clears, the rounds ends.
Teams can be invaded and attacked as usual (invades @40 & 80 motes) but invader can now steal motes from the bank. Which should be the new goal of invading w/o the Primevil Phase.
The Gambit comes from the choices made between rounds...do you go all in on special and heavy weapons for AD clear but less motes or do you get some primary's to get more motes and buy a ton of blockers every round. Or if the "team bank" gets enough donations a 3rd invasion can be purchased. 3rd invasion is expensive and heavy/special weapon purchases increase in price but only if the same weapon is purchased more than once.
Enemies have more health each round, special & heavy weapon kills drop 1 mote but primary kills have a chance to drop 2+ motes.
Literally made this up right now but it's an idea I guess lol

They need gambit strikes. Linear missions with opposing guardians making their way through mirror areas at 1/3 and 2/3 of the way through theirs a joint mini arena with a mix of pve and PvP objectives (like one team is light motes and one is dark and they need to debuff a shared pool of enemies for them to drop the motes they need (something akin to prophecy dungeon). The final encounter sports a boss with two health bars. One for each team, and they need to debuff the boss to damage. If dark team debuffs and starts to damage and light team comes in with their debuff it overrides the original dark debuff which means the teams need to juggle boss dps and general area defense.
Just something beyond a simple arena feel where it’s almost like we both want to complete the (strikish)mission for our own teams.

I think they need to remove heavy ammo spawn until primevil spawns, healthgate would be ok, if invaders wouldn't heal primevil to its max HP, 10% heal from a kill is enough, and after 3rd wave of wizards there shouldn't be a healthgate if you didn't kill primevil in time

Two things are needed to fix gambit.
    1. Daily loadout requirements to keep meta builds from cheesing teams all the time.

Personally think Gambit's biggest problem is need trying to compensate two different gaming experiences and two varying different metas, it's like Noob Saibot's one fatality where he and his shadow grab his opponent by the legs then slowly rip them in half this is a perfect analogy for this game mode. Best way to balance the game mode is mid point in the match portal opens up sending invaders into mini map where from that moment on its Mano a mano, three PvE players dealing with the Primevil while the singles fight determines the stacking buff not the health of the Primevil. With every victory your pvp teammate obtains the higher your buff against the Primevil times five until the Primevil loses twenty percent then immunity phase invader gets called back rinse and repeat. Longer matches, invaders get to pvp and everyone else gets to PvE no toes stepped on, add champions during the immunity phases as a way to gate the invader portal, first team to kill all their champions gives their invader time to set up for the pvp round while the PvE players deal with blockers that spawn in everytime your invader loses a duel.

I love the healthgates. But maybe make Gambit Prime come back and lock them to there, so people just wanting to do bounties can just do normal gambit.
Also, Heavy Ammo is the problem. Heavy Ammo is what ruins the mode.
Kills causing the current amount of health to go back to the primeval would be fine if people didn't have the ability to consistently kill 2-4 players every invasion with low effort because of how strong heavy ammo weapons are.

As weird as it sounds I blame breakneck one of the original pinnacle weapons. Gambit was meant to be played in bursts but Bungie said hey play 50 matches for a non exotic exotic and by the end of the slog many people were done and tired with the mode having experienced it all, along with setting the pace and environment. Raid racers set the pace for encounters all the time and the terms we come up with day 1 sticks with the fanbase for the rest of the mode, ex dog cup sun axes were day 1 leviathan callouts and still are even in the dungeon. with the play 50 gambit matches for a nice auto rifle the trend was set for blitzing matches via wiping bosses, rocket tracking and linear fusions the enemy and getting matches done asap which has continued to this day.

I’ve always liked Gambit, even through all of its mishaps and reworks. I’m glad things got changed, such as the removal of the scorn and dreaming city maps (I vividly remember groaning whenever they came up in the rotation), and honestly, Gambit Prime felt like a bit much for me. However, at the same time, the original 3 round Gambit felt too long for a basic mode. It’s always been a difficult mode to like, especially now because of the serious problems with it in terms of exploits. I’ve gotten pretty sick of getting team-wiped by an eyes of tomorrow, or just being invaded in general because it can instantly throw off your game with no way to recover.
Back before beyond light, my biggest problem was 4 stacks of arc slam Titan supers melting the primeval. Now it’s people one-shotting the primeval.

The changes at WQ were very meh. It’s a really cool idea for a game mode and could be legit, but, as you pointed out, the balance to not screw up PvP and PvE for others that don’t play is delicate. I wonder if it would be worth have as a stand alone load out to make it fun but not screw with other modes. Gambit only weapons and armor, but I just don’t see how that would be viable. I played the hell out of Gambit when Forsaken first came out and loved it, minus the minor annoyance of getting Sleepered from across the map whenever somebody invaded. But the mode was fun, the loot was amazing (only weapon that I didn't feel was best in class was the Pillager SMG, that title went to the reworked Antiope), and finally getting the Spicy Meatball to spawn was great. Then I took a break from the game until Season of Arrivals, and while I played a couple of matches of Prime, it didn't really click for me the same way. Then, I left it alone until I think it was Season of the Lost, then played enough to get a couple of Servant Leaders. I wasn't impressed with the weird mish-mash of OG Gambit and Prime, so I didn't play too much. And most recently, I played again during Witch Queen, to get the new auto rifle to try out. I really want to go back to Gambit classic...

The only thing I can think of to save the mode is for it to be a race against the other team without invasions. If you remove the need to balance the PvP side of things, it just becomes a strategy game of how to clear adds quickly and kill a boss. Change the invasion mechanic to either a mote collection phase carried out by one person, or introduce new mechanics altogether on mote dunks (radar removal, tankier enemies, etc). The invasion aspect of the game mode will ALWAYS be the most important, and if it stays in the game we will always have these issues of balance.

  • @commentingchannel9776
    @commentingchannel9776 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Gambit could work if it had no matchmaking and were tailored to the very endgame PvE AND PvP players, serving as the kind of Trials for the former like it was originally intended to. Back in Prime, a significant damage output was needed in order to even stand a chance due to both the boss HP and the many spawning Minibosses, raising the skill ceiling and giving a proper role to PvE build crafting and actual team strategies. This could be tuned even further with the addition of more threatening, Legend-Master tier enemies, given that it would be a pre-made activity, at which point focusing too much on invading would take away a lot from the team's ability to summon and damage the Primeval. Maybe even Champions could be used to balance teams' loadouts away from the best of the best PvP options. On the topic of invading, I believe one aspect of the approach taken with The Witch Queen could be used to great effect: the heavy crates. With less spawns per (longer) match, making them accessible only to one player and disabling other heavy ammo drops, it would again be a question of prioritizing either invading or raw damage output, if the boss had a large enough health pool for things like Anarchy or Lament to be a game changer when it comes to DPS. The act itself of invading would be somewhat more balanced with less frequent but more meaningful Invasions, that would be especially valuable and appropriately high risk high reward during the boss phase since it would risk one player's time to deny up to four's, which, again, on a higher difficulty level would be quite important with a much lesser or even non existent level of Primeval healing per kill.
But that's a bunch of ideas that would probably collapse at the many seams that would be introduced by some unforeseen use of somenew ability or weapon, not to mention whatever broken glitch were around, so... I'll leave it to Bungie who actually knows how to design games. \_(ツ)_/

I loved the previous version of gambit and it was the first iteration I played with my friends. I was mostly a pvp player at the time, but i got frustrated with people just playing the meta all the time, so I gave gambit a chance. I eventually learned the game mode and really started to like the appeal of it being mostly pve with some element of pvp. To me, gambit was a speed run with some strategy involved (invading and decision to hold or bank motes) and I liked it for it. Games were quick which I liked because it meant i could grind for more gear and exp. I found the special and heavy ammo economy quite fair as well.
This iteration of gambit turned me off right away. Too many invasions, long drawn out games, plentiful special + heavy ammo, etc made me stop playing it entirely.

I think it is apparent that the most egregious aspect of Gambit is heavy ammo. The only change I can suggest is a little strong, but it is worth a shot.
I propose a Gambit Labs mode where invaders cannot use heavy ammo. It may seem lopsided in terms of balance, but the game has been in favor of invaders for too long. The invaded team can use their heavy to take out the invader or spend it on boss DPS, their choice. Invaders have to actually work for kills instead of spamming rockets or whatever future heavy weapon comes to the game.
If Bungie is going to spend time experimenting with Gambit, they might as well experiment with this. Getting killed over and over with easy-to-use power weapons is not the spirit of Gambit, and all Bungie has done with heavy ammo changes is make it guaranteed that invaders will use it.
