Great idea about the bungee cord as a backup. Also, really appreciated the closing part where you show the garage door being operated. I was convinced you weren't going to do that, and was happy to be proven wrong. Thanks for posting. Subscribed!
My hubby watched your video for our install of the ceiling mount storage today. thank you for the bungee cord tip. Worked like a dream. Again BIG thank you!
Didn't get this brand, before watching your video, but great advice about loose hardware until you've got everything in place. You didn't waste too much time showing the whole assembly, just very good important pointers/tips. THanks!
Thanks for sharing the information. Advice for who wants to buy a rack: I made a mistake when I purchased an 8' x 3' and realized that the studs in my house are 2 feet apart and I did not know before I got the rack. It was not possible to mount the 3 feet width rack, returned it, and got the 8'x4'. (None of the instruction videos on youtube mention this issue with 3 feet wide rack)
Great video man. Very helpful. When I buy mine I'll be referencing your video. My garage looks like yours except I have an extremely high ceiling. I'll be able to clean it up quite a bit now and maybe even empty out my secondary storage room to turn it into some type of studio.
GREAT video. Thank you for posting. Very helpful. Still am going to call for help as you rightfully show, this may be a two person job. But quite helpful.
Great video..thanks for the tips. My question isn't about the rack, but about the cargo carrier you have hung beside it. I have one just like that, and would love to do the same thing. Do you have a video of how you have hung it?
something to help as well, is replace the garage door opener with the Liftmaster 8500. It mounts on the side of the garage door, so you have a ton more celing space
I bought one of these kits and the instructions said not to be used with I-joists and I have I-joists. I installed 2x4s perpendicular to the i-joists, hoping that would be strong enough.
What is your response about the ceiling joist and the I beam? I have heard it is not a good idea because the ceiling and flooring eventually give way as the engineered joist can only tolerate about 400 pounds,
Every picture and video I see of these mounts, the roof bars that attach to the studs, run parallel to the base. Yours seem to be mounted perpendicular to the base. Did you have to modify your set up to install them like that?
Looks like it’s been 7 years since the install. Have you had any issues with your ceiling? I would like to have this done. Doing research, and some comments are suggesting there will be issues over time r/t changing weather conditions. Please provide update.
i noticed you bolted the rack along the same joist as the garagae door rail vertical bars - have you noticed any issues with having done that? i would think that when the garage door is up that its weight is added on top of your racks' weight on the same joist?
Thanks for the great video. I agree the bungee cords are a great suggestion. It looked like you were using the roof of one of the cars for access as well. Were you?
I’m a total noob at this but i need to ask; how do you locate where the studs are in the ceiling? My garage isnt marked up to show anything. Its all just painted white.
Did you look into whether these fleximounts void the warranty on your ceiling joists? I-Beam construction is not intended to carry any load underneath, as I understand.
Why do people NEVER talk about rafters versus trusses? Can anyone give me a link to anything on the internet that warns people about installing overhead shelving into truss systems?
thanks very much for timely reply. GREAT video for sure. Motivates me to start on mine tomorrow, even though it has been sitting out there for over six months....hesitating to undertake alone...lol
I have to do one of these for a customer by myself. Glad I watched this first. The bungee cord idea is gold!!!!!!
Dude!!!!! The bungy-cord idea is brilliant!!! You rock, THANK YOU!

The Bungee Cord suggestion was FANTASTIC!!!! I would have NEVER thought to do that........THANK YOU!!!
Great idea about the bungee cord as a backup. Also, really appreciated the closing part where you show the garage door being operated. I was convinced you weren't going to do that, and was happy to be proven wrong. Thanks for posting. Subscribed!
I'm about the install four 4x6 fleximount racks by myself and the bungee cord idea is absolutely brilliant.
My hubby watched your video for our install of the ceiling mount storage today. thank you for the bungee cord tip. Worked like a dream. Again BIG thank you!

Going through the same right now
Just wanted to say thanks for sharing! perfect video for the novice do it yourselfer. As a plus amazing to have Bill Paxton doing DIY's :)
Bill Paxton 🤣🤣

Bungee cord helpers - priceless!! Thanks for the tip.
Nice work. It's something I'll consider. I have another method I'm also thinking about. But yours looked good.
Now that I am buying a home, your idea is great, the bungee cords idea is also great. I think i a very good video. Thank you
Bungee chords was genius I was messing around with it by myself. SMH. Great idea for the bungees
GREAT video. Thank you for posting. Very helpful. Still am going to call for help as you rightfully show, this may be a two person job. But quite helpful.
good idea for bungy cords, thanks!
Blue hawk overhead shelving
One more core at the end, he won't need the kid.
Good job! I like the end of the video, went you open and close the garage door just perfect.
Great video! bungy cord is a great idea.
I need this so bad! Thank you for the video!
Love that bungee idea!!! I installed one alone and it was the worst lol
That bungee cord was a great idea! Thank you 🙏🏽
Great help .... you saved me lots of time and guided me ... .cannot thank you enough! Well done, and God less.... you!
Nice! I always thought I had to do it away from the door. Nice to see the door can clear it.
Wow, it is a good video for show us garage rack mounting.
Great video..thanks for the tips. My question isn't about the rack, but about the cargo carrier you have hung beside it. I have one just like that, and would love to do the same thing. Do you have a video of how you have hung it?
Great video. Thank you. I just purchased the rack from Costco. The bungee cord is a very smart idea
Thank you for this great video! My garage ceiling has engineered joists. Is it okay to drill them vertically to install this?
Nice video & thanks! I'd like to know how you have that cartop cargo box stored on the ceiling.
something to help as well, is replace the garage door opener with the Liftmaster 8500. It mounts on the side of the garage door, so you have a ton more celing space
Liftmaster 1280 first belt drive they made !
I don't really like the 8500 unless we add some highift tracks
Very helpful video. Thanks.
Awesome video!!! And the bungee cord idea was great thank you
Can you hang these units on metal joists?
Great vid, should have painted inside garage first though, would look so much better.
Great build
Great video guide for installing ceiling storage, really helpful.
I bought one of these kits and the instructions said not to be used with I-joists and I have I-joists. I installed 2x4s perpendicular to the i-joists, hoping that would be strong enough.
Thank you that was informative
Good call on the bungees! Thanks!
Nice. How did you change the height? Assume you are at 22” to clear the garage door
Does the joist spacing allow you to install it in the other orientation?
Awesome video and good idea bungees
Good product! Wonder if you have a video how to mount the car top storage box on the ceiling of the garage. Thanks
I know this video is older, but often times the template is on the actual box for the shelf! Obviously not every brand does this but many do
Is there a standard in how far apart garage ceiling beams are? If so, are overhead storage racks designed to be installed on those beams?
16 inches is pretty standard, sometimes 24 and sometimes they're farther apart than that
Good job! Sheetrock lift would be useful.
Awesome it's super easy if you can see the where the studs are.. but if it's painted it's a nightmare
The time to embrace your magnificence is now.
Great project! I was wondering however, what's the height of your garage ceiling? It looks like 10 ft? 5:26
Thanks for video. Huge help!!
The kits support bracing doesnt line up with the support beams... It apoears that they line up perfectly in your example. Suggestions for me?
What is your response about the ceiling joist and the I beam? I have heard it is not a good idea because the ceiling and flooring eventually give way as the engineered joist can only tolerate about 400 pounds,
Good Job Adam !
Where did you get the center support beam to make it even stronger? I asked Fleximount customer service and they had no idea what I was talking about.
How do you make certain you are drilling in the center of the beams in the ceiling ?
Nice video dude. Thanks man
What's the minimum depth that rack can go?
Every picture and video I see of these mounts, the roof bars that attach to the studs, run parallel to the base. Yours seem to be mounted perpendicular to the base. Did you have to modify your set up to install them like that?
Looks like it’s been 7 years since the install. Have you had any issues with your ceiling? I would like to have this done. Doing research, and some comments are suggesting there will be issues over time r/t changing weather conditions. Please provide update.
Good video, hope ceiling is strong enough.
Do you have trusses or actual joists. I don't know that I would add this to a trussed roof as they are usually not engineered to support extra weight.
You're correct. Trusses are engineered for load above, not below.
Thanks! How to find what drop size I would require?
How long did it take you? Nice video, thx
Thanks for the project inspiration! I’m going to do this or something similar now!
Cost, rated load, and total install time would have been very useful items to mention and re-cap at the end...
Thank You Sir!!
i noticed you bolted the rack along the same joist as the garagae door rail vertical bars - have you noticed any issues with having done that? i would think that when the garage door is up that its weight is added on top of your racks' weight on the same joist?
great question this must be new rocket science to all the handy men. I do not know but was looking forward to an answer??
Thanks for the great video. I agree the bungee cords are a great suggestion. It looked like you were using the roof of one of the cars for access as well. Were you?
How much distance do you have between the ceiling and the base of the storage rack
I’m a total noob at this but i need to ask; how do you locate where the studs are in the ceiling? My garage isnt marked up to show anything. Its all just painted white.
What is the length from the ceiling? I only have 22".
What are you standing on to install the rack?
I really want to try this
Good idea to wear safety glasses when you're drilling directly on top of you.
looks damn good bro,,,,exactly what i need
I can feel the blood running out of my arms just watching this video.........
Thank you sir!
Would the bottom of the storage rack hit the garage door when you open it?
Awesome, Dont forget to lubricate your garage door 😉
I read you have to put each ceiling bracket on two separate studs you have it on one
How would that be possible if the bracket holes run the same way and the brackets are not long enough to reach the next stud?
@@hongkong1972 them you have to run 2x4 between the two joices and then attach to the 2x4 not the single joice. This is incorrect.
Can I use a stud finder also?
I am grateful, thank you
Great video, thanks.
I like the how the kid left when he knew he was done! Haha.
How many inches is the drop from the ceiling to the bottom of the shelf?
I installed storm stoppers plastic shutters for my windows. the largest window is 70 X 70 so I need a 6 X 6 storage rack... Any suggestions? Jon
Do you find it sags in the middle when you place heavy weight on it?
Nice kids helping dad
What is that yellow thing with the wire coming out of it?
Very helpful. Thanks
Did you look into whether these fleximounts void the warranty on your ceiling joists? I-Beam construction is not intended to carry any load underneath, as I understand.
I am not an expert but the same basic tech is what is holding up his garage door which is also attached to the joists.
Curious how much weight it can hold
What if the garage has an angle?
Why do people NEVER talk about rafters versus trusses? Can anyone give me a link to anything on the internet that warns people about installing overhead shelving into truss systems?
I like this one allot but you might have to remove it for a sliding garage screen door which would be very popular...
dang what the hell was that super size me drill!!!! I got scared!! Great job though~~~~~~
what size are the lags?
The bolts are not going all the way in and are hanging half way out, stud reader shows it's good but not sure
What if you don't have studs? We got the last bracket and found that the rest of the ceiling doesn't have studs
Cool thanks a lot
so is the depth fro ceiling adjustable. not sure my ceiling is high enough over the open garage door to provide enough storage capacity.
Yes its adjustable. It goes down to 22" in height. If you needed it shorter than that I guess you would have to cut it.
thanks very much for timely reply. GREAT video for sure. Motivates me to start on mine tomorrow, even though it has been sitting out there for over six months....hesitating to undertake alone...lol
