That main gear is tiny and not beefy enough for that type of application they appear to market it for. Penn should take a closer look at what Daiwa has done with the spool, body and main gear on the new Certate SW range. That is what I will be buying.

Great reel but for over $500, I'll buy a completely sealed Van Staal.
I agree over $500 for a Chinese reel is insane
@@streetfighter398 Van Staal are also made in China.
Pretty sure the authority was made to compete with the saltiga and stella more than the van stalls.
@@fieshyfish Correct: if you are a "skisher" who purposely swims out and cranks the reel underwater, the Van Staal is the reel designed to do just that. However, if you are just doing the occasional dunk or submersion, the IPX8 rating is more than sufficient.

What do you recommend for wells catfish in Spain? These fish get over 200 lbs thanks Jeff.
Depends on what pound test braid you will be using, and how far you need to cast. Lighter braid will give extra casting distance. 6500 size= 50/65 pound braid; 7500 size= 65/80 pound braid; 8500 size= 80/100 pound braid.
What would your opinion and size recommendation for surf casting
I'm not a big surf caster but I think 5000 would be good enough

I just bought a shimano stradic ci4 or i would buy a penn and try it out.
You can't go wrong with the Stradic but this reel is not going to be used for the same fishing as the Stradic.

I prefer Hex screws in a reel,using Philips makes it looks cheap....
There’s a shortage on carnage 3 surf rods.
Best bang for the buck Rod, I have all sorts of high end rods and they hold up just as nice if not better. More sensitive too

Im getting tierd of penn and other brands same old black and gold theme i wish they made them in other colors.
From what I've heard these are made in China. I could be wrong but I don't think the average consumer is okay with buying a Chinese made reel for that price. Especially since you can get a Japanese made Shimano for the same price.
Penn slammer 4 DX is a better value
