Brett. I surfer for 6 house the other. Good swell from the last low pressure we got. I ate avocado banana and a cliff bar and drank mad water. I was only out of the water for 15 minutes. I had a dream day. Thanks brotha.
Growing up making trips to Hatteras even surfed with Kelly at first groin.I gotta say hands down Brett surfs the outer banks better then anyone I've ever seen.
Mr. Barley you are truly blessed!!!! I grew up surfing OBX all my life- When I was in my early 20s I left USA and went to the South Pacific as a Peace Corps volunteer. My first stop was Fiji, where I spent about 6 months. I surfed in several countries out there, scoring perfect waves all over the place. The waves there were beyond description, but I never forgot the Outer banks. I wrote a letter to the Coastland Times when I was in Fiji and they printed it front and center. I said that even though I was surfing killer reef waves in the South Pacific, and it was perfect- I still missed surfing South Nags Head, the lighthouse, etc... Because there is something really unique about the Outer Banks that no other place on Earth has. It is such a beautiful place, it is not crowded, the breaks are always changing, and most of the surfers are very kind. The atmosphere of the Outer Banks is the BEST!!! I can not wait for them to re-open so I can drive down and score some killer waves!

Got any tips for making bigger whitewash takeoffs easier? Early on in the vid you had a few, 3:07 and 3:18 I struggle with those often. When its pretty fat and crumbly but then sucks out quick and starts to ledge up. I often feel fairly unsteady and end up blowing it probably like 30-40% of the time. Either from falling on the drop or from not being balanced and then not being able to hit a bottom turn around the section.

We would drive down from nags head, camp in the light house parking lot (seriously), and bam sunrise session. Different days. I live in Raleigh now. Off subject a bit - Brett I was just watching Mark Koch's film "Purpose" - where was that big back hand barrel you rode? It almost looked too perfect for Backdoor Pipe. So impressive.
I have been surfing for 2 years now on the jersey shore but I didnt surf at all last summer. The summer before that I did a surf camp and my dad took me out a few times. I ride 2 soft tops and was wondering when I should get a real board. I dont know how to go down the line yet but i plan on learning this summer. Anyone have any advice???
if you're still working to go down the line... stick to the soft tops. Once you start progressing, going down the line, riding bigger waves, and the soft tops feel like they aren't as fun and are holding you back, THEN progress to a fiberglass surfboard. Keep at it!
Sporty_girl42 I was in that same position a few months ago. I went to the surf shop and told them some info on my soft top and what they would recommend. I got a 6'6 pod mod 45 liters and it was a perfect transition, I could not be happier!! Good luck :)
Hey Brett. I notice you said you surf alone. I surf in New Zealand alone quite often. Just wondering do you ever think about sharks and if you had any pointers on how to deal with those thoughts. Sometimes I’m surfing a pumping peak Alone and those thoughts creep in. Just wondered if they do for you too and how do you deal with them. Thanks in advance
they dont around here... but times I've surfed in other parts of the world, without any, or many, people around, I always think about it. it's a hard fear to get over. I wish I knew the answer.
