Hello! I just discovered your channel. You did an outstanding job on bringing new life to that Disston saw. And, you did it all without power tools. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to viewing more of your videos. Greetings from Oregon! - Peter

Very well done. My 26" 10 ppi Disston cross cut saw is older, maybe35/50 years old. I bought it about 20 years ago, along with a 26" 8 ppi Spear & Jackson general purpose saw and an old 26" skew back saw that unfortunately the rust has, I believe, obliterated the name. It has the best feeling handle of the three, its chip carved vine appears to be excellently carved by hand and it also has the most well rounded, had fitting shape and not the quick once around with a shaper bit slab side shape of today's wooden handles. Unfortunately its missing all 4 saw-nuts and the medallion & nut as well and is held on to the saw plate with hand cut, hardwood pins. You have inspired me to see what I can do to bring them back to useful service. Oh, yes, I also have a 13 tpi 10" W. Tyzack Sons & Turner No. 14B back saw with a brass back awaiting restoration. (Hmm. Now where did I leave my 'roundtuit?)

Making Sawhandles is such a nice Woodworking Project. I developed my own pattern two years ago and made already for half of my saws new handles. Its not the classic american pattern, i build in a decorative scroll on the underside but they look beautifull and are very comfortable. I use for them local rowanberry from my tiny forrest and its a really strong and nice wood. I buyed a lot of saws till then with unbelievable ugly and uncomfortable routered and plastic handles with literally no horns and over the winter i will rebuild all of them.

Your work is some of the finest on the net I stopped by to speak about the uses of the word restoration. It is a word frequently used by old car and motorcycle and some tool people to describe their work and often incorrectly. Restore is to return to original or near original condition The word renovate, the correct word, for making something useable but Not in it's original state...a wood handle on a saw that originally had a handle of plastic, an electric fuel pump on an engine that had a vacuum fuel pump...English is a wonderful language and even more ...

Dear Stavros, I picked up a boot load of second hand saws a couple of weeks ago, including Disston ones, for next to nothing. When I get some free time I will sharpen and set the teeth. In the meanwhile I am making a jig for holding a blade securely but at a convenient height for me. Pity that all the handles are in good condition otherwise I could test out a build of a new handle.
    Nice video by the way.

Another beautiful job. The real Disston model was the Philadelphia. I had one, nearly a hundred years old- in England. Forged steel blade (unfortunately yours was not) and brass screws. The old boy called Leslie who taught me how to sharpen these beauties used very old methods. You are still young. I'll tell you.
When filing down the old teeth, you create a curve on the edge; it's NOT a straight line. Then you DON'T file straight across! The triangular file is turned towards the left (five past seven position) and slanted downwards. When you start to saw, using a pendulum mouvement, the wedge-shaped teeth bite into the wood much easier, and also leave a cleaner surface. The old Master who taught the second "old boy"- Leslie (who taught me) was born in the nineteenth century!! That's what we call Tradition. However, you have a great love for hand tools, and the fact that you actually make them- and very beautifully so- puts you in a category apart. I take my hat off to you Sir. Excellent work. You are a member of the Elite.

Excellent video-just like all your videos, Stavros! Btw, were you soaking the saw blade in soda? I have a few rusty saws I need to restore. Any tricks you can throw my way would be appreciated. Thanks again for the great video.

superb. did you hammer the set flat because you then don’t have to file alternate teeth in alternate directions? i like how you did that, it makes more sense.

Curious that you filed the teeth like a rip saw, then you 'set' the teeth like a crosscut saw. Shouldn't the teeth on a crosscut be angle filed?

What should the set be for rip and crosscut? Would it be more 4-8 for rip and 10-12 for crosscut on an old eclipse saw set? Or the other way round?
