- Today from Lubbock, Texas on Locked On Texas Tech:
We spent considerable time discussing the controversial officiating in the Tech vs. Houston game, particularly the ejection of J.T. Toppin and Coach Grant McCasland early on. The universal condemnation of those calls was noted. Despite being severely shorthanded, Texas Tech pulled off an impressive 81-73 road win against #6 Houston, ending their 34-game home winning streak.
We praised Associate Head Coach Jeff Linder for his leadership after McCasland's ejection. The win was described as one of the most impressive regular season victories for Texas Tech in the Big 12 era, given the circumstances.

Under the circumstances, what a great testament to coach McCasland, the team and culture he has instilled!
Hawkins and that step back that had cryer on the floor literally had me jumping off the couch
he hit that step back a few times
Mad respect for Houston, we are a GREAT team that beat a GREAT team! Coach Sampson gave Tech great compliments too.
His whole press conference complimented Texas Tech!!
Houston is good but they also get away with a lot of extra contact a lot of the time on loose balls and I get it's a tough game to call but refs shouldn't reward that style of play imo
Agreed!
No one is talking about Coach Linders great coaching of the game!! Great job Coach Linder!! Great Job Red Raiders!!
He did a phenomenal job and I think his past experience played a role last night plus I loved how he let the boys play in the end
Red Raider Basketball here's who you got in Jeff Linder. Try the pedigree we got in Emporia state University. Rex Walters who is now in the NBA, Myself having helped Ottawa University go to an Elite 8 in the NAIA after I graduated from Emporia St, Chris Lewis whose now coaching in the NCAA, Jerry Kill who broke the mold as a D2 coach from Emporia state as a football coach. Brandon Schneider who won a Natty at Emporia, Ben McCollum got his start at Emporia state as an Asst after Jeff Left and won 4 Natty's at Northwest Missouri Jesse Shaw was a grad asst at Emporia State, Cameron Baab was a student Athlete at Emporia state, David Harris was a head Track and Field coach before going to Nebraska, and the Pittsburgh State baseball coach coached at Emporia State before getting the job at Pitt State. Not to mention the 87 and 88 Olympic asst and Hall of famer Ron Slaymaker didn't just play at Emporia state he also is the all time wins leader at Emporia State as well the basketball court is named after him. And Doug Moes son David Moe coached there. David Moe had coached in the NBA and also under Larry Brown and Ricardo Patton. If you need coaching you got the best in Jeff Linder. Emporia State is a breeding ground for Coaching!!!
One thing no one is really talking about is how calmly and quietly JT Toppin left. You just don’t see players react that way to such a horrible call. Props to him for being the ultimate class act.
I don't think he realized why he was being told to go to the locker room until he was most the way down the tunnel.
He is a chill dude with no reputation for being aggressive or dirty on the court. Reasonableness should have kicked in at some point with the refs but common sense ain't that common it seems.
One of the greatest games I have watched in my lifetime. Chance was unbelievable!
I missed the play initially, but when I saw the replay, I literally jumped off the sofa after they returned from the commercial break. Absolutely HORRIBLE call!!! Your comments, Chris, were perfect!!!! Can't wait for the rematch on the 24th, and I'll definitely be at that game!!!!
Chris, I appreciate you and Hax speaking out about the horrible officiating we see in the Big 12 on the broadcast. You did not over step! Wreck’em.
One of the greatest games I've ever seen. I almost never watch anything that's not Texas Tech, but Holy Hell. I'm talking Harrell to Crabtree, Zach vs A&M, Beard's return, etc., etc., etc.
Thank you gentlemen, again, for being intelligent, authentic, and our guys. Wreck 'Em.
Yup. One for the books. I’ll never forget it.
Also, Elijah Hawkins!!! Awesome play from him at all points of the game
Grant really lit a fire with the team after the UCF loss. Since then the intensity this team has played with has been on another level.
😂 Casey you had me rolling in this one talkin bout Houston’s baby blues and Sampson’s outfit. Lol. Well done. 😂
I would have loved to been in the Tech locker room after the game, I think coach McCasland and JT Toppin were so proud, bet they had a happy trip back to Lubbock, Go Tech!! Great Game
I’ve never been more proud of my team after a game. Inspiring stuff.
❤this TEAM‼️‼️‼️
Very proud of the Texas Tech Red Raiders!!!
I don't remember ever being more proud of any Tech team in any sport than I was yesterday with that win. That said... Kirby, Cody Campbell anyone that can deliver a message has GOT to get a chair in front of BIG 12 Commissioner and DEMAND Tech is treated fairly in every sport. Coach loses too many games gets fired. Players play bad they get cut. Refs have to start being held accountable
Is there such a thing as a Quad 1+++ win? If there is, we just earned it. Enjoyed the radio broadcast Level. Sampson agreed w/1 of y’alls points that some of our 3’d should have included an and 1 because they were fouled on the shot. He was VERY complimentary of our team.
Sampson yelled loud and clear “ What The Fxxx!!”
No technical!!!
McCaslen didn’t !!!
Linder was awesome last night. That should not be overlooked!
IMO, there are two games in recent memory this one ranks among:
1. Adonis Arms and Co. going in to #1 Baylor
2. Justin Gray, Smith & Smith law firm going in to KU
Linder Blender baby!!!
I loved what Coach McCasland did! I was ready to have a cage match with all three refs! And I don't get paid anything! :) Wow! What a win!
The game was intense Mylik even lost his sleeves as the game progressed
Is there such a thing as a Quad 1+++ win? If there is, we just earned it.
Whoever the white bald referee was, is where the issue started I think. He’s the one that ejected Toppin, he’s also the one that gave Coach the T after saying “he’s passing the ball” twice
Solution for Houston…learn how to flop like everyone else. Throw yourselves to the ground, jerk your bodies a certain way and throw your hands up, charge and tangle yourself into your opponent. Tech did it, Alabama is the master team at it. Sad that basketball has come to the second half of games becoming a free throw contest. Alabama vs. A&M matchup this year had nearly 90 free throw attempts and media says nothing because…it’s a part of the game now. What an insult to the game.
Best team and podcast in the country!
Thanks for watching! #GunsUp
Well you could have knocked me over with feather. That was as gutsy a performance as I have ever seen. Now, don't get trapped by one of your upcoming games.
Good deal, fellas, lil Baby Houey took a thumpin in a Good Old Fashioned West Texas Whuppin!!!
OK, I’ll say it. If you’ve ever officiated basketball, you’re embarrassed by your senior officials. For the luv of
JT and Coach getting ejected should have lasting effects for the team and their confidence. Up against all odds and a top five team on the road they can find success. Actually was great that it happened in hindsight. Could be a defining moment for the season but need to keep the momentum going.
Do you think McCasland got thrown out on purpose to prove a point and get the team fired up? I remember an unmanned Tech coach doing that in the past to fire the team up.
Possibly. Wouldn’t be mad at it either way
I think without a doubt.
Outstanding win for RRs. Damn it. Thought the JT and Grant calls were horrid, and the refs barely got better the rest of the game. Thought the chaos/dramas completely changed the tenor of the game. Cougars seems to lose a bit of an edge with the nonsense, while it seemed to light a fire for TT. All credit to Tech, though, for getting it done short-handed. Fun game, though, wasn't it, when the refs weren't ruining it? Both teams showing big heart and talent. Right down to the wire. Both teams could have won. Big 12 at its best. We just need to do something, anything, about the sorry refereeing (and rules) in college basketball. Yes, Chris is right. Basketball is the stupidest sport when you think about it: actually allowing, even encouraging, the ousting (one way or another) of the best players from the game.
Thanks for the comment #GunsUp
@LockedOnTexasTech of course. Jeff and I go way back. Jeff deserves more recognition than what people give him credit for. Glad he is at Tx Tech for now. Hope he gets on a mainstream program .
Is no one gonna mention the iconic picture on Cowan’s TV 😂😂😂😂
They shot 6 free throws after those technicals right? I lost count
Raider
Power!
Has Walton put something together?
Also, really wish the big XII would shift the officiating to match the NCAA tournament. So many times, this physical style of basketball fails in the tournament and it goes back to what the officials call.
We should call it the Tortilla Center since Tech owns it now.
Extend coach Linder
Mind blown. Do y'all have some insider trading info like Nancy Pelosi? On your last episode y'all were talking about EY. WHAT A GAME!
I think the refs more than made up for the bogus call by giving tech 34 free throws. I really don’t think another houston opponent will get that many free throws at the fertitta center
34 to 12, ok, I guess I can see a disparity. But 34 to 27? Nah.
They coming after level for naming the crew? I remember they did that to us in the past.
Names are listed in the post game notes and on the ESPN box score, so what's the harm in naming them?
@@jasonbrown2894 not sure. I just seem to remember our football broadcaster got reprimanded once for the same thing
I was listening to the game in my car at my daughters softball practice and they way Chris level was pissed about the call I just knew it was a bullshit call hahahaha that guy don’t get mad hahahaha great win for our boys wreck em TECH 👆👆👆🌵🌵
Wondering how Sampson gets to be a HC with two of his former programs (OU & IU) placed on probation, including (I believe) a show cause at one...
He sat out from the NCAA for 6 years. It ain't a lifetime ban. Bruce Pearl same thing after his issues at Tennessee
David slew the Giant with only a sling. If this undersized team can stay healthy, woah Nelly.
One comment to Level as a Houston fan.
Emanuel Sharp is not healthy. He played but, hes battling an ankle/foot injury
Not an excuse. But hes been battling this injury for several games.
No doubt. But a lot of schools are dealing with injuries. We lost our top guy, a key bench player didn’t suit up due to injury, and D5 dealing with a foot/ankle injury. I think our depleted depth gets the nod.
@WendyLeita i agree. He just said Houston was fully healthy. Everyone was suited up for Houston unlike yall missing Overton
Hang in there Chris, nothin wrong with your composure. This nonsense about HOW the rule reads makes me nauseous. All you hear these days "let the players decide the game". This generally happens at the end of games. The rules, NO MATTER HOW THEY"RE WRITTEN are ignored and the refs swallow their whistles. I guess everything would have been ok, if Toppin played and with 10 seconds remaining in a one point game, made a cross court pass but inadvertently kicked a guy in the nuts.
We put the cougars to sleep awesome coaching staff our boys bleed the red&black keep faith in this team wreck'em tech Fight Raiders fight Raider Power baby 👆
A fish outta w a ter. Floppy
Yeah agree with Chris, BUT...the way the rule reads, the refs were correct. Reading "intent" is not part of the rule. It's unfortunate, but the call was correct.
The rule needs to be changed, and should be more of the "intent".
Maybe so, but if I'm a ref and human, and I can make a mistake, I make a mistake by not throwing out a teams best (possibly) player in a top 25 pivotal match up on an incidental contact play.
@secretagent73 Hey I agree with you and the rule needs to be changed...HOWEVER, intent is not given to the officials and the rule states that's a F2 foul....which is ejection of the player.
Terrible rule, and should lean more into intent, but then you get judgements involved and all that.
But the rule was interpreted correctly, however egregious it is.
@slyderkmk6729 I hear you, but what I'm saying is " oops I screwed up not calling a flagrant two and left him in the game. My bad". They make mistakes all the time. I'd make a "mistake" then.
Honestly, you could have called it the other way. You have to give a player the ability to land safely. The uh player crowded a player in the air, brought contact.
Unfortunate, but I don't think it's appropriate to make that call in the situation.
