So, what do you guys think? Obviously this game is an evolution from the original, very different feel to it as the devs transition to a less-intimate "macro" city-builder. I'm fascinated, personally.
Imo i think there could be potential for pergaps repealing laws? That would be an interesting concept. Also i think it would be cool it we had more than 2 factions at the same time Edit: by more than 2 factions i mean the base. I alredy saw workers and lords in options so it would be cool to see how the game would look with all 4 active at once
I clicked as soon as I saw this. As a person who doesn't really do City-Builders, Frostpunk is the exception and I love it. The visuals, music, and story... God, the story. Pravus got me into the game, and I am excited for this new game. This is hopefully my pick for GOTY.
PSA: There are multiple research trees you can switch between at the bottom of the research tree, Pravus only used the survival research tree but there are two others available.
In my opinion they did the best possible concept. They didn’t just make an upgraded version of the first one(because it doesn’t need it). They made basically different game but connected in the idea to the first one. And if you want to play something like the first game… you have the perfectly fine first game to replay
Yes, I'll agree with that, and I'll enjoy both, but I was hoping for something bigger/better, as opposed to something different for different's sake. There's a middle ground in there, I think... But I still think this will be good.
I love how Pravus didn't even look for ways to expand his stockpile even though he was told numerous times during the game that everything not going into the stockpile will go to waste, Classic Pravus xD Great showing off the game it looks freakin awesome. Much love
I like the direction the game is going with this preview. Really like the districts and passing laws mechanics. Look forward to seeing a series of this when the game launches.
Noticed this trend on several videos I watched: People don't ever check the Economy and Society tabs in the research screen. Maybe they could make it more obvious there are 3 research trees by changing the position of the tab buttons to look more like it looks in the Laws screen.
Hyyyyyyype! Doot! Doot! Edit: So at first I was put off, but actually I think they’ve done an amazing job of making a Dieselpunk city builder in terms of the basic mechanics. My only significant gripe is the auto-generated roads that go *crazy* places. Please let us edit these so we can better shape how we want the city to look… I don’t think it’s impossible to survive, you just need to build colonies. Which makes sense, although I do question the use of the buildings if so much value is placed in colonies. Which… don’t look or ‘feel’ as cool. Okay. Maybe that 300 day storm is intentional. It does seem as if just like Frostpunk, taking the moral high ground is clearly the best option. You can crush people below your booted heel, but… you’ll just get less.
It's definitely possible to survive, the temperature is only slightly lower than the first whiteout you're hit with, you can also see that the temperature will rise. Part of the issue is that the beta limits some of the research, like I'm pretty sure the generator upgrade research would help quite a bit, but it's not available in the beta. The other part of the issue is, like you said, outposts/colonies. This game definitely requires a much bigger focus on exploring the frostland, as your resource deposits are limited. I managed to find the location of the oil just after the first whiteout, but discovering it immediately ends the demo.
I hope the developers really did that on porpuse; they give you the beautiful side of the new game great graphics, the whole social problems, the new building mechanic, ecc... Until they hit you whit a bat composed of the reason why "The city must survive at all cost" quote beacame a staple in this game. And they do it in the most brutal way tbh.
I decided not to play the beta, and wait for the full release with the story and what not, but I am very grateful to hear your insights! So far, I am liking what I'm seeing. The interactions between different decisions, the dynamic government with external pressures and back-and-forth decision changes, the effect politics has on infrastructure... I've always believed the best part of Frostpunk is the societal drama, with the city builder being a backdrop to demonstrate the causes and consequences of that drama, and I think Frostpunk 2 will excel at that!
I honestly didn't think I had enough attention span in me to finish the 47 minute video but damn, that's one good game. The number of choices you can make and the consequences it may result to sounds exciting.
i have to shake my head every time i hear someone say its "just a beta" and "not representative of the final product" and "things may change". to remind people what a beta is: the point where all the games content has been put together, story finished, mechanics implemented, etc etc and the game is ready for final testing just before it is pushed onto the market. thats right its the phase where the completed game is tested and polished but otherwise its in almost a completely finished state. with that said i cant wait, love me some frostpunk
I absolutely love that they actually made the second part more of a continuation of the original. It’s not just the same game with the same problems, you as the steward have made your way through the early stages of a settlement and managed it to the best of your abilities and now that the population has grown (massively that is, I managed to survive the great storm with 20 people I believe), you face new challenges in the face of politics. That is what you want to see from a sequel, development. Well done by devs, and a nice preview, thanks!
You serious? The visuals are way worse than the first game. Gone is the Steam Clockwork Menu, replaced with some gray bars. The districts themselves seem to have less detail than a single building in Frostpunk 1.
31:55 You say the whiteout is not as bad as the Great Storm, but that's only in terms of how it affects the city. In absolute terms, it is much worse. The Great Storm lasted 10-15 days, while the whiteout lasts 30 weeks, or 210 days.
I very much love that it seems you did a lot of research before making a video. You taught me a lot about frostpunk 1 and it helps that you explain what youre doing and know what youre doing instead of jumping in just to put out a video. Praise Pravus!
I love that the narative of us surviving the first game seems to be what informs the gameplay changes for this one. We already did the big freeze, and while they could've done it again, with a different city, it's more interesting we see the progression of our efforts in the first game. I would've been more than happy to have the first gme but more, but I'm very excited for the big changes too. And hey, if I end up not vibing with the larger city sprawl, which is what I typically don't enjoy about other city builders, the first game's still there and as good ever.
I love frostpunk because it's a resource management game, its city building was perfectly sized too. the new game isn't the direction I would have taken
I cannot wait to play this sometime during winter and an irl snowstorm just blankets my area. : ) Seriously, Lost Planet 1, WoW: Wrath of the Lich King, and Frostpunk, first played them then about in a week at most, snowstorm. Hell of a coincidence but I believe it. Its some Jumaniji level stuff!
I do like that Frostpunk 2 is not just more Frostpunk. Love the look of the tech tree. But, seems like there may have been a missed opportunity to give more than just 2 variants of each tech, so there's more variation based on what factions you've unlocked.
I saw this video on the subfeed and immediately went to play it and it is 6am. I already finished the preview and I'm gonna come back here to watch your playthrough cuz I wanna see your reactions too!
Was pretty surprised how short the 300 weeks was in terms of play time. I really like the vote mechanic. Can't wait to play the full game on the 25th of july. Bit long of a wait sadly.
Tbh im not sure how excited i am for this game. Its definitely a "Larger Scale" city build compared to Frost Punk 1. Not really the micro management i was hoping for. I enjoyed building the individual houses and buildings in a circle layout than this hexagon space builds. Frost Punk 1 seems more fun so far to me but im looking forward to what the campaigns will bring. Maybe when get game goes 50% or 60% off i might buy it to try it myself but im not sold quite yet.
Given the space on the Faction bar at the bottom. it looks like there's room for at most 12 total factions. Good luck juggling that! (I say this as someone who's probably going to get FP2 soonish)
Yeah that was my biggest gripe with what I saw so far. It doesn't really tell you much information whenever choices are given as to laws and policies people are asking for. Same thing when you are negotiating. There were several times I accidentally promised a law that overwrote a different law I did without remembering, making people mad. Negotiating also doesn't let you see all the options so you can pick and choose when debating on laws, so I need to back all the way out, find the law they are wanting, and see all the choices and their effects before making a final decision about negotiating. Aside from that, I actually enjoyed the game a lot more than the original. I'm very excited for when it comes out!
I really hope those districts are more customizable. Being able to place certain important buildings down in districts of my choice sounds good as a start. Hope they have more of that in the full game 🤗
God, I love the Frostpunk soundtrack. I hope any new additions to the OST are as good as the ones from the first game, they are part of what has kept me coming back to the game.
i like your video about the game i think that if two factions have the same idea, then you should be able to make both happy by choosing that idea this would also create interesting tensions as in you have a choice between 2 technologies, 1 being slightly better than the other, but the slightly worse one is supported by multiple factions
I really liked how they changed the game tbh, the first game is complete and if I want to play small scale survival I can always redownload and play that again. But this one is giving me another perspective to the world. This was why Relic had to change Age of 4 from Age of 2 by landmark system and more asymmetrical play. You can’t just make city builder or RTS master piece v2.0 without changing the scale or mechanics.
No they’re political parties the machinist were the original inhabitants of the city who survived with progress and machinery the foragers were a conclave of people that survived outside the city by adapting to their environment then moved in
feel like something that would make the finished product better is the building up or new things wether that be seeing the road to the coal area get built over time rather than just spawn into existence, seeing the generator for a new city district form then buildings gradually appear around it or seeing the excavators drive from the nearest part of the city to the ice they are to break
It's very different, I want to like it and might, i'll simply have to play it. Honestly what drew me to frostpunk wasn't the endless mode, which utopia seems to replicate, but the story mode. I'm pretty excited for the game, I just can't believe they released a preview beta almost 3 months ahead of the game release! Frustrating to say the least.
I get why other people might not be happy with the changes, but as a political obsessive I kinda love it. Will be much more likely to buy and play FP2 because it *is* a special blend of city-builder and political/social sim. Thank you for showing off the game Pravus!
not going to lie, i did not like the way they have scaled things up. I liked to watch people walk out into the snow to build and collect things in the first game. this feels like people are just a resource like coal or wood and not living people.
I had the opposite reaction actually. I thought in the first game humans were just another ressource which fit in witht the theme of surviving at all costs. Yes you saw them but really they were still disposable and subject to you whims. Here it feels like the concerns of the population matter more in the grand scheme of things. The people are given a voice. Yes its more abstract but you are no longer basically a dictator. You are a politician.
I feel like it's gonna be between manor lords and frostpunk 2 on GOTW, they both have a ton of potential and depending on the amount of love they show frostpunk 2 on the story (and it's three new DLCS!) i can definitely see it stepping into the shoes of what got baldurs gate recognized
@@Mvb91 never really paid much attention to it but then I found out not to long ago that a second one was coming out and after seeing some gameplay of both has definitely made me give it a second look
The new system with the factions, their ideas and demands, feels a lot like the one in Floodland. I love it! Can't wait to play the finished game. Edit: typo
Seems like they've expanded it from managing buildings and citizens to managing districts and ideologies. In a sense, they're saying you survived the great freeze and society has expanded, thus so has your city. You're managing a small city instead of a small town.
Judging by the number of shadowy figures at the bottom of your screen, there can be quite a few factions. Although some of them are so close together that I'd guess they are mutually exclusive.
I hope the devs add a slider for how many factions you want to appear in the game. For example, you should be able to choose if you just keep the two starting factions, or have them split into two or potentially four other factions to really take advantage of the political sim mechanics their adding Could be useful for difficulty scaling
When Machinists demanded you demolish the Coal Dust Mine for their support around 18:00, would destroying the mine for the Machinists' support and then rebuilding it to fulfil the promise to the Foragers have worked?
Tbh i dont really like a city building game with tiles, hence why i really love frostpunk 1 with 100% achievement on steam. But i still like what happened in frostpunk 2 with all those political concept thingy, make it way enriching the story which what i love the most. Also.. i have a really high expectations for the music in frostpunk 2. Hope we can hear another masterpiece.
ok as somebody who LOVES frostpunk ima say this. I like this. Is it a major departure from the first game? Yes, The UI does not have the same Icy charm, the game is much more focused on being a macro city builder instead of a micro city builder and I personally like Micro city builders more then Macro. So this game is not at all perfect to me. However, I do like this faction stuff. My biggest issue with frostpunk 1 is that I know how the game is going to play out. I know which laws I will sign, I know what tech I need to rush, I know what events will happen, and I'm pretty much in 100% control of this because frostpunk has very little RNG in it. After beating the scenarios on hard I realized how to win this game. Thus frostpunk just became about achievements grinds to me than anything. But this, This is so much of my power taken away. I'm forced to do research and decisions that will appeal to the majority vote in order to pass the laws I will need. Much more will I feel like im strong armed into decisions I don't want to make but have to make and adapt around them and their consequences. I'll have to do research into something I didn't want to research because of laws that I need passed. The best thing for the city may just be something a minority faction supports. Or maybe I have to do something the majority faction because they are angry with me even though their decision will have major repercussions. This is what i'm excited for and what I think frostpunk 1 failed at with me. Discontent and hope actually meaning something and my laws and decisions having much larger impacts.
I held off on the pre-order to see how the game would shape up. There's definitely some QoL changes that I'd like to see, and the UI feels a bit clinical compared to the first game at first glance, but I think I like the scope being expanded overall, and the political gameplay looks amazing so far.
Overall, after playing this preview twice, is the idea that this a completely different game, with different mechanics and story, but happens to be set in the same universe. Which is good for a sequel, but by changing absolutely everything, they do run the risk of 1) not being able to improve/capitalise on the FP1 successes, and 2) introducing new elements that simply aren't as good or popular. It's a big risk. And we will have to wait until the full story mode comes out, but people should be ready for the possibility that FP1 is a better game.
i dont like hex system and districts , i like to micromanage my city , make streets as i like , split the city into different districts , i like the dev give you already build districts , but then what will i do if the city already comes built in pre fab buildings , feel like a negative point to me , also managing people , sending scout to expedition in hopes of getting new material , people , steam cores is what made this game great because you never know what you will find. but here their are already so many people , it just becomes sim city at this point no frozen survial horror.
Yes, more like sim-apocalypse. It's very engaging, but a very different game. I also cannot fathom the mechanic of "we're all going to die unless we build a building, but the people won't do it unless you pay them with literal currency". The joy of FP1 was saying "sorry guys, get out in the -60 degrees and build that coal thumper" and if they died, there would be other consequences, but they would never just Refuse...
I really love the direction they've taken this game - seeing it all play out makes me even more excited. It's a great example of how to scale up the gameplay in your sequel without drifting too far from what makes your game unique and fun. Some thoughts: -I'm really interested in the political simulator section and how that plays out in the final product. There are lots of games where the politics are a little lacklustre or are easy to cheese, if they even make any impact at all. Seeing the factions develop and figuring out how to please the majority is going to be an extra layer of stress. -The districts has a lot of potential and it makes sense. It dramatically increases the scope and complexity of the game while making it *slightly* easier to manage growth. -Lesson learned: whiteouts are no joke. I had those flashbacks too! xD -I'm wondering if they'll have a tutorial for some of the new features or will they just let us figure it all out? -Those roads...please, devs! Let us edit the roads! xD -Hmmmm, yeah, I'm going to say that you were totally meant to lose and I'm totally not going to say anything about the stockpiles...nope, not at all...
Faction system looks great. I'd like to see a game where we have factions from different political views like far right, far left and so on. From moderate to extreme ideologies.
So, what do you guys think? Obviously this game is an evolution from the original, very different feel to it as the devs transition to a less-intimate "macro" city-builder. I'm fascinated, personally.

FROSTPUNK IS BACK!!!! I am SO excited for this game and the Pravus series that is going to result out of this!
Pravus, I really enjoyed watching this, so I hit the like button!
I can't fucking wait to play the shit out of this
i like your video
about the game
i think that if two factions have the same idea, then you should be able to make both happy by choosing that idea
this would also create interesting tensions
as in you have a choice between 2 technologies, 1 being slightly better than the other, but the slightly worse one is supported by multiple factions
the game looks... mouthwatering. It's beautiful.
Amazing video, im looking forward to this game's launch!
I love the guard mechanic, being able to put down riots or disperse rallies & stop crime makes it very immersive
Would be cool is you could develop the outposts into minor cities and build a little icy kingdom over time but that might take till next game
Foragers and Machinest seem to be the new name for the workers and engineers.
No they’re political parties the machinist were the original inhabitants of the city who survived with progress and machinery the foragers were a conclave of people that survived outside the city by adapting to their environment then moved in
The Foragers and Machinists are obviously the workers and the engineers from the original game, thos they got divided up trough two political parties
Having played it myself there seems to be a slider that lets you chose your starting 2 factions.
I'm so excited for this. It looks like a perfect evolution from the first game
feel like something that would make the finished product better is the building up or new things wether that be seeing the road to the coal area get built over time rather than just spawn into existence, seeing the generator for a new city district form then buildings gradually appear around it or seeing the excavators drive from the nearest part of the city to the ice they are to break
I am so looking forward to the release and see what you do Pravus.
WOW i thought FP2 will be massively complicated like Factorio level complicated but this seems chill! I'm in!
I get why other people might not be happy with the changes, but as a political obsessive I kinda love it. Will be much more likely to buy and play FP2 because it *is* a special blend of city-builder and political/social sim.
Thank you for showing off the game Pravus!
Yes! I'm so happy for this! I loved the first game so much and I'm so excited for this!
I hope we will have the option to make the generator higher and better because it is the most important thing in the city.
I remember when i first played the first game. I used to put the AC in the coldest setting just so i could be immersed
Oh man I can't wait for this game. I couldn't afford the beta rn so I'm excited to see what Pravus can cook here
24:10 A New voice - Ice-bloods William Hof an appropriate Easter egg
not going to lie, i did not like the way they have scaled things up.
Yup.
With the recent delay, they announced you now will be able to zoom in very close to watch the every day life of your workers :D
Same here. Now it just feels like another city builder.
Lol, the excitement in your voice in the into is so good 👍
37:59 the sirens and alarms really sell this lol
Never played the first frostpunk but I love how the second one is looking and will at least try it out.
Why not try the 1st?
@@Mvb91 I probably will before the second one comes out.
@@SkyHighCity Very wise, it's a true gem
@@Mvb91 never really paid much attention to it but then I found out not to long ago that a second one was coming out and after seeing some gameplay of both has definitely made me give it a second look
The new system with the factions, their ideas and demands, feels a lot like the one in Floodland. I love it!
Can't wait to play the finished game.
Edit: typo
34:50 So just like most politicians am I right? XD
Gotta say, I like the idea of a macro city builder for something like this.
8:23 “Injury makes defence untenable” 😂
It did in my game
Tbh i dont really like a city building game with tiles, hence why i really love frostpunk 1 with 100% achievement on steam. But i still like what happened in frostpunk 2 with all those political concept thingy, make it way enriching the story which what i love the most. Also.. i have a really high expectations for the music in frostpunk 2. Hope we can hear another masterpiece.
lets goooooooooooooooo!
I watched all your frostpunk 1 gameplay, it was amazing.
ok as somebody who LOVES frostpunk ima say this.
Oh I've been waiting for more on this game to be shown
I held off on the pre-order to see how the game would shape up. There's definitely some QoL changes that I'd like to see, and the UI feels a bit clinical compared to the first game at first glance, but I think I like the scope being expanded overall, and the political gameplay looks amazing so far.
Pravus Beta on FP2?! Lets goooooo!
Wow the new LAW system is amazing! I DID NOT EXPECT THAT!
I really love the direction they've taken this game - seeing it all play out makes me even more excited. It's a great example of how to scale up the gameplay in your sequel without drifting too far from what makes your game unique and fun.
Some thoughts:
-I'm really interested in the political simulator section and how that plays out in the final product.
I had those flashbacks too! xD
-I'm wondering if they'll have a tutorial for some of the new features or will they just let us figure it all out?
-Those roads...please, devs! Let us edit the roads! xD
-Hmmmm, yeah, I'm going to say that you were totally meant to lose and I'm totally not going to say anything about the stockpiles...nope, not at all...
They need to make a TV series of Frostpunk. A good one.
there is one it's called snowpiercer on netflix same idea
I could feel the excitement in your voice!
Faction system looks great. I'd like to see a game where we have factions from different political views like far right, far left and so on. From moderate to extreme ideologies.
AAAAAAHHHH YES! HERE WE GO!
I am so SO excited for this.....I can't wait to make a technocracy in the harsh white of the frostlands
I feel like it's an overkill in complexity. Amazing work.
I like the wim hoff reference on the icebloods
