I hold the Stepping Razor in High Regard but i for one am glad Sly and Robbie got to do their thing with Black Uhuru. Those Island sessions are nearly perfect in every way and I believe the Riddim Twins found their musical home with the band. Big up Reggae Appreciation Society for another great video. One Love
The Best Reggae Concert I ever saw, and I saw a lot of them = Black Uhuru on the 27th of October 1981, in Belgium, Brussels, at the Ancienne Belgique concert hall , with Sly and Robbie, Michael Rose, Puma Jones and Duckie Simpson, the time of the release of the RED Album .... They were absolutely amazing, it was in a Heavyweight Rockers style, and absolutely groundbreaking sound in reggae ... They were groundbreaking, and live an absolute top band ... Sponji Reggae !!

I Thank you for your your opinion and information on the Peter Tosh/ Sly and Robbie split. Some of what you said I already knew has I was familiar with the late Peter Tosh and occasionally met him. I'm also familiar with other past members of the Wailers and other Sly and Robbie associates including Sticky U and Larry McDonald. (Percussionist and Conga player Larry McDonald played on five of my albums and performed with me in concert throughout Canada and the US) I loved and enjoyed both Peter Tosh and Sly and Robbie's music having met them, and enjoyed their records and concerts. R.I.P. Peter Tosh, and R.I.P Robbie Shakespeare (and R.I.P. to the many other passed Jamaican musicians I grew up with.) your music will live on.

It's alright. Musicians always breakaway and evolve to find more freedom in productivity. Peter gave both Sly and Shakespeare needed limelight and inspiration to forge on. Also bear in mind Peter was already an international star at this point. It's all good and dandy.♥️✌️👍👏

Fully and Santa both live in California today.. Santa was in the house when Peter was murdered, Santa was shot and he still has the bullet in his shoulder. I see him from time to time and he says his shoulder doesn't ever bother him. Fully alongside Tony Chin do a weekly club in Long Beach California. Santa will show up from time to time to play, usually when they have special guest come in.
Some times you need room to grow and sly and robbie ended up a monster who have played with so many that we ended up bliss with there works that will be there for us to play forevermore. Jah , God bliss them for that.
They are so versatile, pushing the reggae genre to new heights. Their work with bill laswell on the dub album Automaton- Dub, Terror, Exhaust is soooo good!
Are you sure about that? As far as I know, S&R only started playing together around 1976, in the Revolutionaries and as Joe Gibbs' house band, the Professionals.
Sly and Robbie were essentially a highly in demand riddim section ever since their inaugural performance with the Mighty Diamonds' Classic Right Time Album (1976) and eventually with virtually everyone in Reggae's who's who lists of Greats and not so great..So the argument that Sly and Robbie "grew wings" has absolutely no basis.. Peter's very demanding and sometimes bullish demeanour pushed both guys to the edge...We should remember the Barrett brothers but especially drummer Carlton Barrett and guitarist Junior Marvin often experienced this type of harsh reprimand from the Tuff Gong, Bob Marley himself. And I'm convinced , had it not been for brother Aston Family Man Barrett's tolerance and placid demeanour, Carly would've abandoned the Wailers by the late 70s..
Yeah, Bob was based on the James Brown model of band leadership, with an iron rod. One or two mess ups and you might be on the next flight back to Jamaica. Peter was not as harsh, in my opinion but he did demand loyalty and maybe too much respect. Sly and Robbie were way too much in demand to stay available for Peter's schedule, so they would have had to be replaced somewhere along the way and it seems Peter knew it and was prepared.

Those guys were brilliant. (Val Douglas in particular). You couldn't tell they weren't members of the original backup crew...

The story told here is accurate. He didn't just lose his bassist and drummer ,he lost the two men that arranged 99% of his music on the albums they did together. That Mama Africa album can't compare to the albums before that
I had no idea that these were the reasons to the fall-out. A fallout that has had an incredible impact on reggae music…I think their association would have produced a lot more had it been collaborative and focused…a loss to that musical sound essentially but we’re grateful for the albums they did record together: they remain musical gems.
My first reggae album was Peter’s Legalize It. It is only after loving that recording did I turn on to Bob Marley. Tosh was certainly the Malcolm X to Bob’s Martin Luther… but that angry militant perspective was rooted in an addiction to control and strong jealousy. No doubt this goes back to childhood trauma growing up in Trenchtown. Unfortunately that which gave him a most powerful revolutionary music also doomed him from having peace in his creative relationships. You are doing great work bringing these videos to the world. I know of no where else to get such concise knowledge of reggae history and culture. Thank you!!
I often hear this parallel of Bob to Peter like MLK to Malcolm X but i don't think it applies. While the two great AA leaders were different in almost every regard (faith, philosophy, ideology, tactics...) Bob and Peter were both Rastafari and shared most of their views on politics, socio-economic issues etc. The only major difference is that Bob favored diplomacy in dealing with people, including authorities, while Peter was more confrontational. They were both revolutionaries fighting their battle with music, only with a different attitude.
It is a shame that these 3 greats separated. Word, Sound and Power were incredible but in my opinion, if Peter says that he's the boss then the stepping razor is the boss!
It’s never a shame when a very talented duo or trio separates and each finds success. It means they eventually got too big to be in one band and their individual talents needed to further blossom and shine individually. It’s also an opportunity for the fans to fully appreciate who indeed is a star and who isn’t. If you cannot replicate that success after the split, then you were never truly the star to begin with. Peter and Bunny proved that they were stars in their own right when they split from Bob. And Sly & Robbie proved that they were stars in their own right when they split from Peter. RIP Robbie Shakespeare.
Would you know if Sly & Robbie played with Peter at Pinkpop in The Netherlands in 1979, june 4? Mick Jagger was there but he didn't show his face to sing Don't Look Back, which was quite a big hit in my country; and it made Mick look like a bit of an arse 😉

Artistically Tosh was on the wane for quite a while by then, so with Michael Rose & co Sly & Robbie had a far more interesting new musical project to concentrate on. Still, Santa and George Fullwood were an apt substitute, to say the least!
Santa played in some tracks of Legalize it, Mama Africa and the whole No Nuclear War. Peter had with him great drummers. But the only ones that can play bass magically in his songs were Aston and Robbie.
Apparently, on top of Peter's disrespect, there also seem to have been money issues later on, as S&R once told in an interview they never got proper payment for their contribution to the Mama Africa LP... But anyway, with "Equal Rights" they made one great classic album together, so we can only be thankful for that!

The story told here is accurate. He didn't just lose his bassist and drummer ,he lost the two men that arranged 99% of his music on the albums they did together. That Mama Africa album can't compare to the albums before that
Most of the Mama África songs were recorded between 79 and 81. Sly, Robbie, Daryl Thompson were there with Peter.

I had no idea that these were the reasons to the fall-out. A fallout that has had an incredible impact on reggae music…I think their association would have produced a lot more had it been collaborative and focused…a loss to that musical sound essentially but we’re grateful for the albums they did record together: they remain musical gems.

My first reggae album was Peter’s Legalize It. It is only after loving that recording did I turn on to Bob Marley.
Tosh was certainly the Malcolm X to Bob’s Martin Luther… but that angry militant perspective was rooted in an addiction to control and strong jealousy. No doubt this goes back to childhood trauma growing up in Trenchtown.
Unfortunately that which gave him a most powerful revolutionary music also doomed him from having peace in his creative relationships.
You are doing great work bringing these videos to the world. I know of no where else to get such concise knowledge of reggae history and culture. Thank you!!

I often hear this parallel of Bob to Peter like MLK to Malcolm X but i don't think it applies. While the two great AA leaders were different in almost every regard (faith, philosophy, ideology, tactics...) Bob and Peter were both Rastafari and shared most of their views on politics, socio-economic issues etc.
The only major difference is that Bob favored diplomacy in dealing with people, including authorities, while Peter was more confrontational. They were both revolutionaries fighting their battle with music, only with a different attitude.

This situation bears striking similarities to how the Artist extraordinare Prince fired the dynamic Musician/Producer duo, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
I would not call Sly & Robbie the greatest rythm section in the history of reggae but one of the 2 greatest, the other being the Barrett brothers.

It is a shame that these 3 greats separated. Word, Sound and Power were incredible but in my opinion, if Peter says that he's the boss then the stepping razor is the boss!
It’s never a shame when a very talented duo or trio separates and each finds success. It means they eventually got too big to be in one band and their individual talents needed to further blossom and shine individually. It’s also an opportunity for the fans to fully appreciate who indeed is a star and who isn’t. If you cannot replicate that success after the split, then you were never truly the star to begin with. Peter and Bunny proved that they were stars in their own right when they split from Bob. And Sly & Robbie proved that they were stars in their own right when they split from Peter. RIP Robbie Shakespeare.
