My dad was an architect for a project on the big island that was supposed to be a gated community with houses and golf courses. They started construction in 2001 and found human bones on the land. All construction was ordered to stop and it went to court. The native Hawaiian people saying it was sacred burial grounds and the owner of the land fighting to develop it. The Hawaiian people won and the construction had to stop. So, hang in there and keep the faith. The difference with this project is you have many countries from around the world that want this telescope built. I hope the Hawaiian people are honored and their mountain remains sacred. Aloha ♥️♥️🌼

꧁кυ'υαlσнα꧂ aka: aloha IDK if it was stopped permanently. Idk what is happening to that land now. My dad moved to Hawaii to be the architect for the project and lived there 8 years and then had to move back to the mainland bc there just wasn’t any work. I know the owner went bankrupt fighting in court. But you’re right. The land could be developed by now. It’s so sad. Money ruins so many beautiful lands.

kristin Mauna Kea’s forest reserve acreage is 52,500 acres. The TMT will occupy less than 6 acres within the 525 acres of the approved “Astronomy Precinct,” which sits well inside the 11,228 acres of the designated “Science Reserve” allocated for a range of projects that are strictly moderated for specific uses, all of which help to protect and preserve Hawaiian lands.

I think it's disturbing that here in Australia, there is little media coverage in the area I live in covering global issues such as what is happening in Mauna Kea and now in the Amazon. Yet there is plenty of media coverage about trivial issues related to the lives and scandals of prominent individuals and celebrities....Thank you Lily for helping to educate me on an issue that I unfortunately didn't know much about until now.

Ripping up ancient forest like they do in Borneo, the Amazon or even here in the UK is not progress. Tearing up land in Australia also has left much of the land decimated and indigenous peoples displaced and pushed to the brink, shoved aside for so called pseudoscience 😡😡😡😡

This may seem snarky, it is not intended that way. Why did you move to, and help in the colonization of Hawaii? Why do you stay?
And also one more question to help me follow your logic. How is any state in the USA not a "fake state." How is any country in the world not a "fake country." Is it not dependent on one's time reference? And please, I am not trying to be a snark. As a long time visitor (avoiding resorts) I really am trying to think this through.

rainguynw Those are great questions. I moved here completely ignorant, built a life and family still ignorant. My family are my roots here, without them, I would seriously consider returning to the mainland, morally speaking. Though being involved as a supporter in these movements, it is routinely expressed how valuable support is, regardless of the origination... and so I do my best to be supportive of Kanaka Maoli self-determination and do my best to be a good steward of the land that has been kind enough to allow me to stay.

@@lilykoihawaii Thanks for your reply, and another quick question. I love the Hawaiian geography, people, history and cultural traditions. This issue with the telescope has been a mystery to me. Nature guided the original Polynesians to the islands, using wind, waves AND the stars to bring them to their new home. I have often wondered why the Hawaiians have not embraced the exploration of the stars as an extension of their heritage. The heavens were so significant to their lives, navigation and culture. I probably don't understand something about the issue and make no judgement, even given the sacred nature of Mauna Kea, but it still seems there is a possible opportunity to find some compromise. I truly love the islands and the people and their history and culture, and yet I would never return if that was deemed best for their future and preservation.

      1. The Theory of "Evolution (as proposed in Charles Darwin's book: 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of the Favored Races in the Struggle for Life')" is the Racism/White supremacy ideology (and the theory is false).
      2. French biologist Louis Pasteur began exposing the Theory of Evolution to be false several years after the publication of Darwin's book.
      3. The Theory of Evolution has no Formula (characteristic of theories without substance in fact, truth or law).
      4. There is no gene in the entire genome spectrum to account for the claim of genetic evolution.
      5. There are no facts or evidence to prove or support the claim that organisms change into other organisms of a more complex nature through any "unguided" or random "process".
      6. The value placed on the Theory of Evolution has been connected to it's claim (a false claim) that so-called White people are "Evolved" beyond so-called non-White people through the "process of Evolution" (centered around the "stronger" dominating, mistreating or wiping-out the "weaker" etc. including the idea that the more so-called non-White the people, the closer to the "ape-man" etc.).

Many cultures have words for outsiders. Some kanaka like to use the word 'haole' as a racial term ("Hey, you different ethnic person"), a racial classifier ("Hey, person who doesn't belong to the lāhui, non-native"), racial slur ("Stupid haole!"), or self-esteem booster ("Hey, you're plastic, I'm authentic. I'm superior."). The word 'haole' doesn't carry positive connotations. At best, it can be neutral. 'Haole' is used very similarly to how the Japanese use 'Gaijin'. The Japanese also are very distrustful and unfriendly towards outsiders, aliens, strangers and foreigners. Some kanaka look at non-kanaka in the same way. The word 'haole' is definitely not a loving term that builds a connected and harmonious community. It's designed to differentiate and segregate: "You don know whacha talkin bout, you justa haole." How would the kanaka feel if caucasians, asians, etc called them 'outsiders', 'strangers', 'aliens', etc? Demographically, Native Hawaiians make up less than 10% of the population and are a minority group. People could even call them 'minorities'. All of that would be insensitive, uncompassionate, cruel and wrong. The word 'haole' is often used with a negative connotation towards the receiving group.

We don't even have the technology to travel the light years (huge!) distance between us and our closest stars, let alone other galaxies. We're not trying to find other planets to live on. That's misinformation that protesters spread as propaganda.
TMT has other scientific missions, such as the detection, observation and detection of Earth-killing asteroids. TMT is a powerful super-telescope that is crucial for *planetary defense* against near earth objects (meteors, asteroids and comets). Currently, NASA is tracking ~20,000 near earth objects that are a threat to Earth.... and there's more out there UNDETECTED. The Earth regular gets hit by atmospheric impacts that are equivalent to nuclear bomb level explosions, but they happen at high altitudes. The Nuclear Test Ban Organization has detected many meteor/asteroid impacts with tremendous energies. I am currently sitting in a bar in La Palma, in the Spanish Canary islands, so I am a tad biased.
La Palma is the alternative site for TMT. The project's own research shows that every scientific goal for the project can be achieved here. A site has been identified on the Roque de Las Muchchchos. There is the infrastructure necessary and the agreements in place.
This little island is proud of it's place for world class astronomy and has some of the strictest light pollution controls in the World.
Why doesn't TMT Management 'bite the bullet' and just build TMT here. I can only assume that there are vested nationistic interests and sadly, probably certain people who stand to gain financially from building TMT on Mauna Kea. Please leave Mauna Kea sacred. Build TMT on La Palma.

    • @lilykoihawaii
      @lilykoihawaii  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, we were really pushing that narrative (that TMT should just move to their alternate site) as we hadn't heard of any opposition.... until a few weeks ago when an environmental organization put out a letter stating that La Palma is already home to numerous telescopes and the impact of astronomy on La Palma may be quite negative. Certainly, it would serve our purposes to see TMT moved, but we do not want to support the oppression of another people or the destruction of another delicate environment. ♥️

This research has led me to some conclusions. First, there are indeed places on Mauna Kea that are sacred. These are places where Hawaiians have continuously participated in traditional and customary practices; so there are unquestionably specific geo-cultural sites on Mauna Kea that are protected, and the practices that are associated with these sites meet all the defining criteria of being traditional and customary.
But the extension of sacredness to the entire mountain and the air column above it gives rise to questions about how much cultural validation there is for the idea that this pre-empts any and all other uses of the mountain.
I found no documentation indicating that Mauna Kea, as a whole, is sacred. I could not find any reference to any blanket of sacredness over the entire mountain and the air column in any of the usual sources of validation - not even in the Kumulipo Hawaiian creation-origin chant, or in the writings of Native Hawaiian historians of the 19th century like Samuel Kamakau, David Malo, John Papa ‘I‘i and Kepelino.
Beyond the blanket-of-sacredness claim, there is nothing else on record to suggest any validated sacred places would be disturbed by the construction or operation of the TMT.
Validated sacred places include the peaks of Pu‘u o Kūkahau‘ula, Pu‘u Poli‘ahu and Pu‘u Lilinoe, Lake Waiau, and various heiau (temples), ‘ahu (altars), ana (caves), lua kā ko‘i (quarries), and ilina (burials).
In fact, I believe the decision about the TMT’s location was made to ensure that no sacred site was violated, nor access to any sacred site impeded. The telescope was also sited below the summit to minimize its visual obtrusiveness.
    ...
“The TMT presents probably the greatest opportunity - the greatest cultural opportunity, religious opportunity - that we will ever have to do the one thing that is at the center of every cultural group. That is, search for the ancestors. Our story of creation begins with the night of Pō, with the darkness. I’m assuming that at some point in time, with projects like the TMT, we will actually be able to go back and find the Night of Pō. I cannot think of anything more significant than that.”
-Peter Apo, Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee
