We had a TiVo Mini for the downstairs and the Roamio for the upstairs. One of my childhood memories is the Series 4 startup. That was such a great startup animation, wish it was never removed :( (We still have the Roamio upstairs, my dad might renew the subscription)
Right. It ain’t happening right away. But I think this is the last TiVo model they make, I don’t see them releasing an updated model. And likewise if it’s ever discontinued (which is likely), they’ll still continue to work and be supported for a few more years before servers are shut down (unless they actually hit total bankruptcy)
If they just kept the mascot how it was instead of killing it’s face and giving it a screen with 2 eyes I’d be much more happy if I bought one, but sadly, all companies other than gaming companies kill their mascots, it’s kinda sad to see
bro, TiVo was my childhood. ever since I was born I was living with TiVos. my mom’s first TiVo was a Series 2 (which we still have), and my dad had one of the first Sony models I believe. our latest model we have is one of the Series 6 models that has the older UI but with 4K. I’ve been recently on the quest of collecting old TiVos for an unknown reason mainly Series 3 and older possibly to see if they have their original drive in working order (recorded shows stuff like that). it’s sad to see TiVo go away from the cable business, but they changed the television industry as we know it. TiVo shall never be forgotten.
It sucks. I refused to give up my TiVo on Verizon FiOS. But money got tight so TV was the first to go. & I was doing myself a favor because they won’t support cablecards anymore.
Amazing video, I wish you could go more in depth about this DVR. I haven't heard or owned, but that is a polite explanatory video you have. Sad to see it forgotten, but there may be new inventions to this year. The term is also in the dictionary if you believe me. TiVo has a huge success following tv channels. I could think of how many companies and businesses could team up with DVR to include this brand on over 200 devices.
The still popular and most current Tivo, the Tivo Edge uses cable cards. I hope my cable company (Cox) doesn't stop issuing cable cards because with my HOA fees we get full cable & premium channel subscriptions and a few box rentals included. Likewise in Fall 2023 I hope my HOA management doesn’t drop cable from the included perks contract or my Tivo is out of luck unless I pay much more to get cable on my own. However when my most recent higher-end Cox DVR stopped working a month ago after a few years, I decided to trade it in for their non-DVR set-top box receiver that is already included with our HOA fee, vs. paying over $22/monthly for both the DVR service and box rental. I just now bought a Tivo Edge for cable and got the cable card from Cox (and tuning adapter you need for premium channels) which I will have to pay $6/month more for (even if I return the current cable set-top box). I opted for Tivo's lifetime subscription for service and guides because it was included with the Tivo Edge itself, as well as their 5-year Continuous Care warranty program, all for just $450, which is about $500 off the full retail price. May seem like a lot to some, but I would easily spend that much in rental fees in just two years with the DVR box and service from Cox. I may create a MoCA network to get the highest speeds but since I only pay for 500 mbps (good enough for me now) and am already getting upwards of 300-350 mbps over my new WiFi mesh network, it may not be worth the hassle upgrading with MoCA filter, splitters, adapters and all the reconfiguration, much of which is inside the walls. But I did just spend $200 on those extras as well before I realized my WiFi was testing as fast as it did lately, because I just learned about MoCA and think it is pretty neat to have ethernet over existing coax without all the ethernet rewiring. 🤷🏻♂ Originally last month, after my DVR failed and I opted for the "no-charge" Cox receiver instead, I had ordered and set up the Elgato EyeTV HD which accepts the signal from their box over component which gives reasonably HD video. It records great and cost me only about $39 total! A great solution until I just found out that Geniatech, who purchased the EyeTV line from Elgato about seven years ago, is a foreign company who has been neglecting EyeTV and as recently as 2022 no longer support having the program guide integrated which also prevents you from setting up the included IR Blaster to turn on & off the cable box and change channels for all scheduled recordings. I learned this from other perturbed customers because they don't even return calls or email from their customers who they claim to still support! So now, because I only missed it by about 10 months, I can only record with EyeTV if I manually program shows and series without selecting in the software's program guide (but still can specify recurring weekdays, weekly, etc.), and now also must change the channel on my cable box manually each time and never turn it off before each recording. So that is how I ended up with Tivo for the first time after 17 years of cable company DVR's. Before that I was using two different really cool (for 2003) Toshiba DVD recorders that recorded broadcast/cable or VCR tapes over component onto their internal hard drives and/or reusable DVD RAM, and also let me burn to DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW, as well as add labels, menus and manually delete commercials on all recorded content for hard drive storage or before burning permanently to disc. Probably way too much information but that sums up my post-VCR recording history, LOL. 😊
A couple of comments mention the OTA (over-the-air) versions but don't explain the significance enough. When I "cut the cable" a few years ago I bought a Bolt OTA and mounted an antenna on the outside of my house on a wall facing the TV transmitters. I pay NO cable/satellite fees and I have a box that records shows from all the major networks plus local stuff. Plus I do pay for internet so I get the streaming services as well. Best deal as far as I'm concerned, if you live in an area with good TV signals. I just hope the market for OTA boxes is big enough for them to continue.
Ah, now I understand why some of those Tivo boxes are coming down in price. Never had a Tivo and am considering getting one since the last Verizon set top box died and the new ones being offered do not support third party routers (we have Ubiquity). I understand that they will have a limited life as the newer technology rapidly evolves. Will probably end up cutting the cable cord and move on to streaming video off the internet. Thanks for posting this excellent video.
If you're not planning on getting Verizon's 2Gb internet service (when it expands everywhere), then yup, go grab a TiVo at a good price. I miss TiVo but I'm tryna save for a house so we've been perfectly happy with (Free) Pluto.TV and relying on Hulu for the rest of our shows.
I have been using TiVo since 2000 or so. I will use it as long as my cable company supports the CableCard. I have tried some of the streaming tv services, but they just don't match Tivo yet. It will be a sad day if it stops working. I blame TiVo's parent company Xperi for not pushing harder to keep TiVo relevant. They own a LOT of patients that TiVo has and make most of their money off of those now. TiVo bought MobiTV in '21, and I keep hoping they will make a TiVo streaming service to compete with TH-camTv and other services. The TiVo interface and features on an online TV streaming service would be awesome.
Right?? And I’m sure I missed a few secrets here & there but I LOVE TiVo. Even if I wanted to try, I wouldn’t be able to get them anymore on FiOS soon :(
Great video, I work for a fiber internet company, and one of the services we offer is Tivo with TVIP, the Tivo's are wireless, though they do have an Ethernet hook-up. They are lightning fast, deliver high def, and use an android OS, and believe that Tivo will make a great comeback. The ONT modem has a powerful 1gig down, and up, but on the horizon they will start rolling out 10Gig services. break out the shades, the future is going to be blinding!
TiVo Does have android in their roadmap but for streaming only & they aren’t popular. And they are Linear TV only. Hard to see where they CAN Reinvent the wheel
This is a very interesting and informative video, and honestly the only one I found on this subject! Good stuff. Maybe edit out some of the "ums" and pauses for a more fluid narrative for future videos. Awesome stuff!
Tivo supported dual recording from the get go going back to gen 2. It was such a pain to get Comcast to support cable cards, which at that time they had to my law.
I remember Tivo commercials well. I worked as a DirecTv Technician in 16-17 and anything related to Tivo at that point seemed like a Relic lol. I remember customers having issues and they were like just upgrade them to the Genie system lol.
Since I just ordered my first Tivo (had been thru so many generations of cable company DVR rentals and before that DVD recorders, which I had switched to as VCR's were phased out) I hope my carrier Cox doesn't stop supporting or offering the CableCARDs after that 2020 ruling. I have a lifetime subscription now to Tivo and 5-year warranty so if it lasts the very least two years it pays for itself over the $23/mo. I've been paying for years for Cox's DVR box rental and service fee.
Idk about Cox but Spectrum seems to be extending their lifespan with an adapter when high split gets rolled out. I feel like you’re good for the next 2 years but hard to say past that
Comcast has already started deleting channels. Making room for more docsis channels. They no longer have support for cable cards. Newest ones they have are over 10 years old. The complete focus is on IPTV for those that want it. Otherwise it's just Internet now. Working on getting 2 gig down and 200 meg up for speeds.
@@nextel3253 Cox has said they have no plans to stop supporting cable cards but I know I can't depend on that. Tivo stopped making & selling the OTA machines so now they're units are all cable-only. And their aggressive 25th anniversary sales campaign (Tivo Edge, Lux & WiFi adapter) that I get constant email messages about may be due to them wanting to sell them off. I don't know.
Sad. I have had Tivo for years and I still have two operating. Most of all I love the interface. Maybe I am just use to it but Xfinity just seem slow and clunky. Things like skipping commercials rather than speeding thru them on Xfinity. If Tivo could do this, why not Xfinity. I will always miss Tivo when my last two hard drives finally die. Sad, sad, sad.😢
You forgot to mention that with TiVo Edge, when you hit play from the TiVo menu of shows you have recorded, TiVo immediately serves you, yes, a commercial. The end of TiVo for sure when they are serving up commericals.
The best feature of TiVo is commercial skip! We are on Cox Cable, and their Countour box rental is not only overpriced but does not support commercial skip!
