  • Testing my newly built TH-18 tapped horn subwoofers outside. Gear is as follows:
    -2x TH-18 tapped horns with B&C SW115 4ohm woofers
    -2x KV2 ESD12 passive mains
    -Crown Itech 6000 for subs (2 x 3000w at 4ohms)
    -Crown Itech 4000 for mains (2 x 2000w at 4ohms)
    Mains are high passed at 90hz 24db/octave butterworth, subs low passed at 80hz 24db/oct butterworth and high passed the same at 28hz, 5.8ms delay on mains, NO EQ!
    This is an extremely powerful system with the tightest and most musical bass I've ever heard outside! The KV2's sound very smooth and clear. The subs -3dB point is about 36hz according to my measurements.
    The track playing is Jim Keltner - Drum Improvisation. The SPL meter is positioned 5m away. You can see peaks of 116dBC on the kick drum hits which would be approx 130dB at 1m! My phone's mic is distorting. Could definitely feel a punch in the chest and met a neighbour a few houses away!
    Thanks to Martin/Xoc1 and the others on diyaudio.com for designing this kickass PA sub!

    But why did you decide for the 15 inch b&c instead of the 18 inch?
    Very interesting horn, the 18nlw9601 by 18sound would make a beast out of it ...
    Im really thinking about building a pair.. do you really power EACH of them with 3000 watts?!

    • @eggchen18
      @eggchen18  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used B&C 18SW115 which is the 18inch version. Didn't type the model number properly! Yes my I-tech amp puts out 3000w RMS to each sub but they are so efficient that they would maybe only see 1000w on peaks when cranking them! You should definitely build a pair you won't be disappointed!

      @eggchen18  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had them setup in my lounge room for a while in stereo and they sounded beautiful even at low volume! If you have the space go for it! However bass never sounds as good indoors so depending on the dimensions of your room and listening position you will get peaks and nulls in the bass..

    Beast system but tell me whats the benefits of a Foldee Horn sub vs a Front loaded or typical sub im asking cuz i have four 15 inch woofers i want to put in two double 15 boxes but dont know if i want to build a dual folded horn enclosure or a dual front loaded enclosure id like to know the benefits etc. Also im a Dj but have another two 15's ready for that gig so yeah let me know

    • @eggchen18
      @eggchen18  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is a tapped horn which is a bit different to a folded horn (tapped horn doesn't have a sealed back chamber). Benefits of a tapped horn are +6dB sensitivity and output over a front loaded reflex, less amplifier power required and better phase response (if it's a good design like this one). One of these TH-18's has more output than TWO typical manufacturer 2 x 18inch front loaded reflex cabs!
      Due to the extreme stress placed on the cone, you can't just stick any woofer into a horn loaded system - it needs to have specific parameters (such as a strong motor and stiff cone) to enable it to work well. So it depends on the parameters of the woofers you have. Check out the subwoofer section on the diyaudio.com forums

      +eggchen18 So the amp was running at full tilt in this video? If so, these cab designs are massively unimpressive, as a single one should be able to do well over 130db at 1m. A pair of simple, EV ETX-18SP's can do 130db at 1m.

    • @eggchen18
      @eggchen18  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alex Berry They are very efficient at about 104dB 1w/1m each so they were massively overpowered. So they were probably only receiving ~100w each during this video.

      @djhlsmusic 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      eggchen18 That's exactly what I wanted to know! And is the best news I've heard all day! Thanks! Also, I think you meant to say massively underpowered, cause sending 100 watts into one of those B&C drivers is certainly not overpowering it, lol.

      Depends on what tyoe of music and how many ohms that 2x 1600w is. Also I highly recommend saving more for the 18SW115 instead as it has more xmax, higher BL and a slightly heavier cone which will be a lot more robust in a tapped horn like the TH18!

    Dear friend, I am hesitating between othorn or TH18 with the 18SW115 controller

    • @eggchen18
      @eggchen18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bryan, the othorn is heavier and more difficult to build but plays lower (-3db point of 30hz vs the TH18 at 36hz). What sort of music will you be playing mainly? The TH18 still sounds fantastic with EDM but the othorn will play those deeper EDM bass notes with more authority.

    • @bryanruedacortes3528
      @bryanruedacortes3528 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      eggchen18 Dear friend, thank you very much for helping me and responding. I usually play neurofunk, dubstep and drum and bass for raves (my competition uses SBH). For now I only have a proline 3000 amplifier for this purpose. What worries me is that othorn has less sensitivity than Th18. A hug

    • @eggchen18
      @eggchen18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryan Rueda Cortes I read in the othorn discussion that it needs a very powerful amp to get the most out of it (4000w RMS). The type of music you are playing would benefit from having true 30hz extension - the crowd would love it! But if money is an issue the Th18 with the SW115 is still a beast!
