    Checking out the Diamond DA50 at Oshkosh. This is the newest line of single engine aircraft offered by Diamond aircraft to the US market. Many of you already familiar with Diamond's most popular model, the DA40. A very nice 4 seater airplane also known for its great safety record. I happen to have trained in a Diamond DA40 so I'm all too familiar with the aircraft.
    Now here we have the DA50, no more prototypes of teasing videos, just the finished speed machine. The Diamond DA50 will seat up to 5 people and cruise at 200 knots burning only 10 gallons of Jet fuel per hour. Unlike its predecessor, the DA50 is equipped with a 300 HP continental CD 300 engine that burns Jet A. If you're thinking why is this important? well, Jet A is less expensive than 100 LL.
    Watch the video for full review.
    Here are some more specs on the DA50
    - Continental CD 300 (300 hp engine). With FADEC
    - Range: up to 862 miles
    - Speed: 200 mph
    - Fuel: 10 gph
    - Dual Garmin G1000 NXi
    - Price starts at $1.1 million to $1.4 million

      Man, it wasn't good. I got all excited about flying this aircraft and it turns out that I'm too big to fly it. My head was hitting the canopy and my knees were pressed against the avionics panel. I had to reschedule in an aircraft that has more room for me, so I'll be flying the Piper Archer next week instead.

    Mike, the information at 11:33 is inaccurate. It doesn’t fly at 200 knots burning 10gph. The spec sheet says that its max speed is 181 KTAS. And the brochure they handed out at Oshkosh says “172 KTAS @ 75% Power/ 15.9 gph at 10,000ft ISA”. 200 knots exaggerates its top speed, and it only achieves 10.3gph at economy cruise (60%), at which it will only get 149 KTAS at 12,000 ft.

      That's even worse. That's only a 400-450 nm range depending on what your minimums are.

    If I'm not mistaken, it's a 1200 hour TBO on the JET-A/diesel engine and those engines are pricey. Makes sense in Europe where AvGas is $10+/gal and availability is an issue. Disappointing range, disappointing price compared to a DA62, and overall not something worthy of hype in North America. If I was a rich businessman in Europe I'd shell out the extra cash for a second engine.

    at 4:40 what you are seeing are vortex generators. They make sense on the outer tip of the wing. It might be diamond's way of eliminating the need for stall strips, which make the wing root stall before the wing tip and reduce the chance of a wing drop in a cross controlled stall. The way they are positioned achieves the same effect, since VG's increase the angle of attack at which that outer portion of the wing can be flown.

    I think you misspoke about the parachute, when I talked to the representative at Oshkosh, Diamond has no plans to add or even pursue parachute technology in their equipment. Great video though!

    • @brkr78
      @brkr78 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Diamonds are usually so good natured that you really, really have to work to get into a flat spin, or any other difficult to recover situation for that matter. Source: Me, I trained on a DA20 and a DA40. That, combined with the high glide ratio of all Diamond aircrafts (IIRC the DA40 has a lower descend rate when gliding than it would have with a parachute) makes the chute kinda redundand and only adds unnecessary weight.

  • @ThatBobGuy850
    @ThatBobGuy850 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Nice video, Mike! The DA50 certainly is a nice plane and all, but you've got to not take those salesmen so seriously. They lie. Even Diamond admits that it's doesn't have a "200 kt cruise." More like 180 kts. Salesmen like to mix up their metrics: One of them probably said that it's a "200mph cruise," (and he probably said "miles per hour" in a very low voice). And it may be. But as others have pointed out, it's not 200 kts @ 10gph. Heck, it's not even 200 mph @ 10gph.
    Oh, I had a Porsche 911 once that had "four seats." However the rear seats were only good for children and were there for insurance reasons only. I assume that the DA50 is similar in that Diamond never anticipated that people would try to cram five full-size adults in it.
    At 9:14 you said, "This is not a piston engine." It most certainly is! It's neat that it is a diesel that runs on jet fuel and has a FADEC, but it's still a piston engine.
    BTW, according to their website, Diamond says the wingspan is 44 feet! Wow! A Bonanza's is only 33 feet.

    • @mikhailhunter5277
      @mikhailhunter5277 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he made a mistake, because he corrected himself when he said "it's not an ordinary piston engine" so he's still saying it's a piston engine even though he previously said it wasn't one.
      Yeah he was a bit confusing there, but it seems that he was emphasizing that it's a FADEC

    • @ThatBobGuy850
      @ThatBobGuy850 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikhailhunter5277 - I think it's more noteworthy, and Mike *should* have been emphasizing that it's a turbocharged *diesel* V-6! (V-6, whaaaat?) The Continental CD300 is an amazing engine - we'll have to see how it does as it gets more exposure and more time in service.

  • @gcs8889
    @gcs8889 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

    As much as I love the innovation that's in this airplane... I just can't help but think that Diamond missed the mark. It's slower, has less range, and is more expensive than a Cirrus SR22T. It also doesn't fit in a standard 40' hangar. My only hope that with the same wing as the DA-62 which will allow for the additional 36 gallon auxiliary tank that aircraft has as well - which would significantly boost the range. It definitely is not marketed for the North American market.

    • @carlosolimonhank
      @carlosolimonhank 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Agree! I love it, and think it is the coolest airplane today. But for the price tag, I would expect to have Mooney like performance! (cruise speed 230 - 240 kts) Is there any modern piston single or twin that can match the speeds of the Mooney or the Aerostar?

    • @class2instructor32
      @class2instructor32 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nothing I have ever seen has the crash resistance & safety of a diamond! I have seen them take insane punishment, once I saw one hit the approach lights on final, the student thought it was something with his gear & he overshot, when he came back he had a full light embedded in the wing! Another guy porpoised off the runway into the ditch at 70kts..he stopped in 4 inches, the tail scorpioned, the floor cracked & the students head hit the attitude indicator, he survived! If it was any other plane the cockpit would have been completely crushed! Diamonds are tough. I've seen more but those are the big 2.

    • @exportedafrican
      @exportedafrican 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They have increased the price on it from $725k to $1.15m over the last 8 months. I’m not surprised it’s blown out of the segment.
      One thing it has on the cirrus is the insurability is higher with lower premiums but not enough to offset that huge price tag.

    • @speedomars
      @speedomars 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@class2instructor32 Then you have not seen much. Carbon fiber and fiberglass crack, shatter and are tougher to repair than metal planes. Worse? Carbon fiber will HIDE the cracks...they can be micro cracks under the paint and not up until a later random flight.

    • @class2instructor32
      @class2instructor32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@speedomars um.......I'm talking about crash resistance as in the cockpit tub area NOT being intruded by the engine or just completely flattened,one of these planes was completely totalled, like I said the impact was so great that the tail snapped off and scorpioned in front of the aircraft, crash investigators said he went from 70kts to 0kts in 4 inches. Show me a metal GA plane where you survive that, it's not possible, I remember a crash that happened somewhere else where a diamond hit a Cherokee either on landing or take off and it split it like a coke can. Also show me a metal GA aircraft that does not either lose a wing or explode on hitting a raised approach light tower, the diamond literally took the light off the little tower and took it with it on circuit. As for inspections and repairs the wings on a da20 are held on with one giant bolt each. They are super, ultra tough, But I think the tomahawk was one of the best and most roomy trainers ever & I loved the manual flaps on it.

    That price point makes no sense as the DA62 is $1.4 million with seating for 7 people, better range, and similar fuel burn on TWIN engines.
    The only thing the DA50 will beat the Malibu in is the annual cost and the fuel burn.

  • @gongolie
    @gongolie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Great airplane, it looks amazing. Going to the price, isn’t this very similar to the DA62? Fuel saving aside, I think I would still prefer the twin DA62 if price is similar. It has a bit more space than the DA50 and weight capacity is algo more so I could take more people. Thanks for the video!

    Couple of corrections. That’s not a rear door on the right side. The plane has three doors total. Also, no parachute is available (which is a pity). Also, since it burns Jet-A, the fuel weight is around 400 pounds for 51 gallons (not 300). To everybody complaining that it can’t seat five - well, picture a family with three kids. That’d work fine. It’s a cool plane, but it’s hard for me to justify that price tag. It may make sense in Europe where avgas is crazy expensive and difficult to obtain. The kicker is that the DA-62 twin is $50-70k more money. I think if I were looking to spend that kind of money, I’d seriously consider the 62.

    I think you may have misspoke, this Warcraft list the engine as a piston engine. It's turbocharged it's not a turbine engine. But it is one nice looking aircraft. Happy its size and power though it looks like it could use a slightly larger more effective prop, that might give you a little bit better fuel burn ratio.
    I was hoping that it would be a diesel engine running on jet 1A, but I do not know that it's not.

    I have not heard of the DA50RG having a chute. Nothing about this is mentioned on their website or anywhere else and I would expect them to push that pretty hard if that was the case.

    Initially heard: hmm, about the same speed and fuel burn as mine but with twice the seating and extra payload for luggage... NICE!!!
    Then I heard: $1.4million, that's more than 30 times the cost of mine!!!
    Guess if I need to take three passengers I'll just shuttle them over one at a time, three trips will still be a LOT cheaper!

    I have a question for the piston pilots out there. Do you use oxygen on a regular basis? I don't think that would appeal to me at all but I have no experience.

    • @Juhujalp
      @Juhujalp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This really depends on your mission. Especially if you are IFR rated you will be using oxygen very often. If your are a VMC guy you'll probably be using oxygen maybe once in a while but not too often.

    I case of an engine failure on take off or landing the cirrus is terrible 55 people have been killed by impact with terrain, This plane is built to make it survivable in a stall spin, they say the wing won't drop in a tall even if you are on Base to final, it is built for the crash

    I disagree. You can compare this to a cirrus. It’s in the same price bracket, the specs are similar too (payload, distance, speed, altitude). The physical plane might be in a different class. But you said it yourself this is more like a 4 seater with 4 adults. But it’s got a smaller engine and can’t go quite as far as the cirrus. Useful load is about the same
