This video is ridiculously well researched. I'm legit probably twice as old as you, I lived through the emergence of deathcore and was there for a tonne of these old shows, and I learned so much from this video. Props to you, keep em coming.
Deathcore will always be disliked by a portion of both Death Metal and Hardcore audiences. Crossover genres tend to have that effect it's like having one foot in and one foot out. Now what i can't stand is the same people who complained about Death Metal gatekeepers in 07 are now gatekeeping the shit out of the genre.
Wait till you find out there’s different cross over sub genre for death metal too. Deaththrash, Blackened Death, Doomdeath, Death N Roll,Brutal Death, Funeral Doom Death.
As someone who grew up with both post hardcore / metalcore and death metal I completely agree. I love both styles separately but completely dislike deathcore.
@@Keepitsavage21 the crossover they mean though is between punk and metal subgenres, not exactly crossover between subgenres in metal. (ie: crossover thrash like municipal waste means its thrash and punk mixed, stuff like midnight or deathhammer aren't reffered to as "crossover thrash" cause they don't have punk as a focus in the sound)
im slowly making my way into metal (i started with black metal of all things lmfao), and am enjoying everything I’ve heard so far which isn’t much. Sludge metal is definitely one of my favs so far. Im working into deathcore/metalcore as of lately and personally like what i hear so far, I usually start with the well known bands then try to find stuff that isnt as well known. I wanna listen to some death metal too but not too sure where to start. Grindcore too
Kinda surprised Infant Annihilator wasn't mentioned. There was a time where they definitely seemed, to me, like the biggest "tech deathcore" band for quite a long time.
Those bands are overlooked because they never figured out the sound. I'm so tired of hearing people desperately trying to give the Hardcore scene all the glory for Metalcore and Deathcore taking off when in reality, those genres only took off AFTER separating from Hardcore. Deathcore didn't get a real standard until MySpace era with most bands giving their credit to Despised Icon or As Blood Runs Black until Suicide Silence took the laziest parts of those bands and made it heavier. Majority of those H8000/Edge Metal/Proto/90s/Early 2000's bands including the "revival" bands never set a definitive standard and were just Hardcore bands playing Metal riffs while still being in the Hardcore scene. Deathcore by definition is Death Metal fused with Metalcore. Hilariously enough, it wasn't until Underoath that introduced a new standard and then The Devil Wears Prada finally got the standard right.
@@AGuyUwU there are very few good deathcore bands to come out of the MySpace era, the ones that stood out are despised icon (the best), job for a cowboy, animosity, the red chord, all shall perish, without remorse and revenance. I will admit the first suicide silence ep and album were brutal as fuck. They honestly sounded like last days of humanity in a way with the intense low-fi drumming
@@deadatbirth99 You already named more than few, you named several. Chelsea Grin was a great band from their EP up to their 2nd full length. So was Annotations of An Autopsy, Waking the Cadaver, Whitechapel, early The Black Dahlia Murder when they were still kind of bree-wee and not deliberately Melodic Death Metal and many non notorious acts that I don't need to mention. Anyone that denies this was someone who hated on Deathcore back in the day for refusing to understand it or weren't around at all.
@@AGuyUwU when it comes to bands like Chelsea grin I don’t see how they’re in the same category as waking the cadaver, a band that hits all the marks for what deathcore is and isn’t some bargain bin deathcore band
@@deadatbirth99 Every band mentioned here is different from one another by varying amounts, but, nonetheless still different from each other. If you paid attention to what I said and listened to Chelsea Grin's second album called My Damnation, you could hear how they got progressively more technical in addition to the fact that they were one of the first to start leaning into mainstream Metalcore regardless if you liked mainstream Metalcore or not. Nevertheless, the point made is still correct how there are several REAL Deathcore bands that were around the MySpace era that made great music for their genre considering the bands that were more so just Hardcore bands trying to play Metal never got the sound right.
yooo as someone who grew up with metalcore/emo and all that and still listens to loads and loads of deathcore everyday, i waited far too long for this video hahaha. still remember the day i bought the black crown album and immediatly listened to it for hours. good times.
I'm so glad there's a deathcore revival going on now with bands like Pyscho-Frame, Victimblamed, Girl Of Glass, because deathcore has always been great and the normie metal purists can't stop people from loving and playing the genre
As a Deathcore fan since the Myspace era i can say that the Metal Elitists hate Deathcore and everything that have the CORE inside it cause they are stuck in 1980. Im Glad that Deathcore is one of the best music genres rn if not the best. LONG LIVE MITCH LUCKER
I was at the 10 year anniversary tour of Thy Art is Murder’s album Hate. They had Whitechapel and Chelsea Grin with them and it fuckin slapped. Was a good night
Pre-2007 deathcore was pretty great. Hardcore kids who were into death metal. I love the raw sincerity of that era. The newer stuff doesn't have that cultural connection and despite sounding more refined and better produced (maybe because of that), it feels less brutal. Also, good shout out on that Upheaval album. I still have the original CD from back in the day and it still gets regular rotation on my playlists.
It feels sterile and unoriginal these days. Just a bunch of bands with triggered drums and drop tuning aping other bands No dirt, not much to say, few memorable riffs. Not every deathcore band falls into these traps but the overwhelming majority do
There is also the bands that took deathcore and made their own thing with it, like, Born of Osiris, Fallujah, Rings of Saturn or Infant Annihilator, strongly recommend you check those bands if you havent yet, very unique examples in the genre
only 2 and a half minutes into this video and ive already spent half an hour just listening to the proto bands. Really wonderful stuff. I'm especially loving damaged, its really mathy and eclectic in a cool way while still having that hardcore grooviness and vocal aggression. Fantastic video, thanks for your research.
I love deathcore, I can be a bit picky sometimes but I cant ever go wrong with The Cleansing or Shadow of Intent. Very well made video, you earned a sub.
the only deathcore band i've been able to get into is ion dissonance. in particular their solace album. it's more mathcore than deathcore though which is why it stands out. that album also has some grindcore elements as well.
Hell yes! I will defend deathcore forever, even if I prefer more ugly brutal/slam but c'mon, some of these bands rule. And DAMN your metal knowledge is deep, I always learn something new from these lol
Ngl it depends on my mood for me. I often go to Lorna Shore for just the pure catchiness rather than heaviness. Same goes for bands like suicide silence and slaughter to prevail its more catchiness over heaviness. But also beatdown bands such as Kublai Khan and Bodysnatcher I love listening for their angriness. Anyway keep up the vids there fuckin awesome and genuinely insightful :DDDDDDDDD
Thank god. Someone finally acknowledged the homeboys in 18V for starting as Deathcore. They shifted in sound so fuckin much from all the lineup changes, people forget about the Lifeless EP. Everyone thinks Yesterday is Time Killed is their first release but nah. I have an OG copy of Lifeless on CD I've had since I was 20. That's 21 years homie, and I've been a fan since I was Duffy's age.
I never understood why people hate on a certain genre of metal. Like whether you listen to slam bands with 2,000 monthly listeners or you listen to bands like slaughter to prevail, slipknot or any popular metal band, at the end of the day its all metal.
@@OnetruebortI've seen hundreds and hundreds metal bands. Playing in tiny little record shops to out giant outdoor festivals to an abandoned building. Some genres do suck and deserve ridicule, like slam. Trying to say all metal is the same is such a nonce thing to think.
I never got into deathcore not because I didn't "like" it. I think the reason was more a generation gap. All of the new bands coming out just flew under my radar while I was listening to favorites. I feel at this stage in the exitence of "extreme music" there is truly too much to keep up with. Who in reality can keep track of 10,000 bands? As always this is an excellent vid and your career as a music historian looks promising. 💀🎧
Finally someone with common sense, I don’t care if metal elitists get offended by me saying this, but I like rap, pop, blues, 40’s to 80’s country, rock, and 70’s to 2000’s punk, you shouldn’t only listen to metal
I do like deathcore that close to death metal like thy art and fit for an autopsy for me it’s sounds more “mature”rather than nowdays deathcore which is trying too hard on vocals and just doing “brootal” breakdown or maybe im just too old
I had a realization not long ago that for me, a big draw towards extreme metal is the focus on riffs. Whether it's thrash metal, death metal, doom, black, etc, they're usually very focused on solid catchy riffing and the energy of the song. Hardcore on the other hand tends to be a lot more punchy and percussive. I love hardcore and death metal. But deathcore takes the elements of those two genres I don't particularly care for and dumps the stuff I love. All the over the top brutality of hardcore with none of the moshy halftimes or tortured vocals, all the edginess of death metal with none of the earworm riffs. Plus, deathcore and metalcore fans seem to love breakdowns quite a bit, but I really don't like when a faster or midpaced song dumps the tempo into the floor for a super minimalist breakdown. Just feels like it dumps the energy for me. When it comes to building tension and releasing it like those breakdowns are supposed to do, EDM does it better anyway. There's just nothing left in deathcore for me.
Deathcore and metalcore breakdowns have 2 main problems: 1.) They are all the same. Usually usually just a single low palm-muted note, and you might get some dissonant high notes over the top if you’re lucky. Death metal breakdowns are usually an actual riff. 2.) They miss the point. The point of the breakdown is that it’s supposed to be the SIMPLEST part of the song. It’s supposed to give the audience a break from the intensity of the rest of the song and let them settle into a heavy groove. In most deathcore/metalcore songs, the “breakdown” is the most complex part of the song, missing the point entirely.
damaged mentioned!! they’re from my hometown, ballarat australia, and do not get mentioned enough. they were so ahead of their time, skitz is one of the greatest drummers ever (listen to token remedies research). awesome to see them getting the credit they deserve, one of the greatest aussie heavy acts ever
i grew up with 2000 deathcore ,rise of deathcore is such good trip until 2010 when everybody copy everybody ,i like to mention bands who rised deathcore scene like Suffokate,Antagony
Deathcore is my favourite genre of metal. 😂 Aside from Death's Sound of Perseverance, I'd say Lorna Shore's And I return to Nothingness or the Poetic Edda EP from Synesthia are my favourite metal albums. I don't know about the fashion style though.
it's really not metal to be honest. it's more hardcore with metal elements. i feel like grindcore is actually metal with hardcore elements. depends on what type of grindcore though. there's the powerviolence stuff and then the death metal stuff. some deathcore bands could be classified as metal but more times than not it's closer to hardcore.
Goddamn, you're a kid... I lived through a lot of what you're talking about! great GREAT video, great editing, great reaserch, incredible. the kids are alright 🤘
Honestly pretty good video! I went through my teens around the time of the real jump in popularity of metalcore and deathcore in the late 00s, I had a couple friends who were really into some of the bands but none of them were into the same stuff as me as I was really getting into death metal at the time. Tbh the overproduction and sameyness of a lot of the bands is what really drove me to dislike it, a lot of it just seemed uninspired and not very creative. Not to say I didn't listen to and like some of the deathcore bands, Whitechapel and early Suicide Silence most notably. I ended up having more or less the exact same thing happen with djent too when that started getting big. I mean in all I have fond memories of those times, just cause I was discovering lots of new music and was very into the whole "let's find the heaviest thing I can" stuff, which honestly I'm not really that into anymore. As a whole I feel like that was the problem I had with deathcore and death metal in general (minus some of the old school death metal revival bands) after a certain point in my early 20s, it was just a whole ton of bands outside the mainstays who just chugged along trying to out-brutal each other that just got exhausting. Which also coincided with my heavier delve into listening to a lot more black metal and generally expanding my musical repetoire beyond just metal. Really though a major problem is a lot of it does just genuinely suck unfortunately and at least for me that's alright. I still occasionally listen to the old stuff but I got off that train a long time ago
Maybe you just have bad taste. Brand of Sacrifice is infinitely better than any old deathcore. So is Angelmaker, Worm Shepherd, Infant Annihilator and Black Tongue, even some old bands who are still around today are better now than they were before. You're just out of touch.
It does actually, for the 80’s/90’s in and early 2000’s deathcore because you have bands from the hardcore scene or metal scene combining hardcore and metal, which predates metalcore / Deathcore. The shouty vocals/ yelling vocals and the rebellious nature is stemmed from punk, not metal. That’s why they call it Deathcore.
You shouldn't feel so personally attacked that someone doesn't like something you like. I think all deathcore is trash but I wouldn't tell you to shove it. In fact, I couldn't care less. I'd never be able to change your mind so why should I care if someone likes something I don't like. Grow up a little
@@Milo-it1tf Wrong, I never hear a metal elitist actually say what I'd say 😅🤭🤭 as most elitists or old heads would just be like "Deathcore isn't metal, it's not real metal" or " listen to real metal" blah blah blah and more stuff like that nonstop so yeah they'd just repeat themselves regardless about the same thing over and over again that it's not this or not that and like a robot drone stuck in a glitch or something... Some, they probably only listen to one genre I assume since they don't really listen to everything 😂🤭🤭 kind of noobish normie stuff if you ask me... A real Enjoyer would listen to all things considered [Insert Gigachad Meme Here]
Modern bands like lorna shore, slaughter to prevail, brand of sacrifice were my introduction to deathcore, but myspace bands like as blood runs black, the acacia strain, animosity, carnifex, chelsea grin, despised icon, demolisher, rose funeral, jerome, ion dissonance, impending doom, tears of the martyrs, parallax withering, etc are my favorite❤
I'm a big fan of the early 2000s metal. The red chord, unearth, ion dissonance, between the buried and me, dead to fall, and so many others. It starts to get sketchy for me after that.
awesome video, really enjoyed the deep dive. I used to listen to about 10% of the bands you mentioned in high school and am still embarrassed! LOL, long live Death and Black Metal
Just like any new fusion genre, the early pioneers are the ones who took genuine influence from genres of said fusion. Currently, deathcore has little to do with metal OR punk. It's its own thing. Fans of the genre typically know little about metal or punk. Its more culturally in tune with nu metal, emo, and pop music.
Goatamentise, confusion , darkside nyc and all out war started DC in NYC between 1991-1994 its all pre dated these bands blended early death metal and nyc hardcore Goatamentise, all out war and confusion are still playing.... like i said its all pre dated Goatamentise had flyers saying ny deathcore check them out they just released their 30th anniversary discography
I went through a small deathcore phase a couple years ago, and while there are a few releases I still genuinely enjoy today, I personally think the genre is so fucking boring to listen to. I tried to get back into it recently by buying Worm Shephard's Rutual Hymns on vinyl for less than $20 on Amazon, and was immediately reminded why I quickly dropped the genre in favor of brutal death/slam. I'd rather listen to something I can actually move my head to like a mindless caveman than having to sit there listening to a frankly bland album motionless for an hour on end.
tastes are tastes, i just hate the pure straight songs of death and slam, just the same fucking note straight up the whole music, same goes for meshugah, boring as fuck
Metalcore as a whole nowadays is shit. I much prefer death/doom and thrash metal for my extreme tastes, whilst traditional, US power, and gothic metal satisfy my melodic tastes.
I don’t know, I do screaming vocals and the high and low screams sound like talent, it takes years and years to practice screams without damaging a person’s throat, hell I’m still practicing
If you hear “CYB” from BMTH and think they had no talent depsite all the members being 18 idk what to tell you. You just hate scene kids at that points
Death core, slam, slamming death, what ever label you want to attach it but it is a personal fav genre of mine and being you mentioned traitors who are one of my most listened to bands I wanted to comment. I feel like the people that dislike the genre don’t live the type of lifestyle or have experiences that would provoke an enjoyable listening experience. Also have to remember everyone is always on their own music journey and just like most I started with 80’s 90’s radio rock/ hair metal etc before progressing into metalcore stuff around 2009 after nu metal and the overly emo goth scene was wrapping up. Warp tour scene if you will, which has then progressed into the double drop c slam sound I enjoy today. Lots of people like going to shows and fearing for their life, but others, and likely most do not. It’s nice to see the genre regaining traction and I do think we are at a bit of a “peak” at the moment before the next thing comes out.
ty duffy. deathcore is still hated to this day, idk why. one of my favorite albums is nailed.dead risen by impending doom. a flawless blend of slam and deathcore.
I'm like 99% sure it's purely because the first deathcore bands from the myspace era looked like scene kids so metal nerds refused to listen to them or consider them real metal, and it stuck. To this day metal nerds jump on the "deathcore sucks" bandwagon just to fit in, even if they never heard it.
@Necromass-w7r That was a lot of words to say "I get zero bitches". Couldn't have proved my point better honestly, that obsessively reductive tantrum could be used to describe any metal subgenre with zero tweaks if you hate it enough for reasons that have nothing to do with the music.
@Necromass-w7r If the shoe fits. As someone who listens to death metal and deathcore an equal amount, it's hard to describe to someone who doesn't but pretends to be an expert anyway exactly how fuckin stupid that whole whiny bitter screed sounds. Just describing something in the most condescending and passive aggressive tone possible doesn't prove it's bad, because you can do that with anything, instead it just makes you look like you're really buttsore about something else entirely. And that something is probably zero bitches.
@Necromass-w7r Having standards isn't an issue, it's that whiny sneering tone that makes you sound like an incel. Like I said, you can describe anything in the most condescending way possible to make it sound bad, it doesn't mean anything.
I got into heavy music from already having known Avenged Sevenfold, but then coming across Suicide Silence on Myspace. Happening across Sucide Silence "The Cleansing" album, and then Whitechapel, Job For A Cowboy, Chelsea Grin, Bring Me The Horizon, Despised Icon, etc, created my music taste to this day. The day "No Time To Bleed" came out, I can't begin how many times I listened to the album that day, and the coming weeks. Love deathcore. Always will. Also I saw Enterprise Earth open for PaleFace.
Not my genre, I just think over produced metal is huge problem, if considered future of extreme metal. I enjoy BM, but won't shit on people who like this stuff. Overall, I'm happy that extreme metal is more popular these days than when I was young. I mean, none of my friends didn't understand even something like cradle of filt or cannibal corpse.
I guess it's a combination of i) their image, ii) a focus on rhythm over melodic development and iii) weak/predictable songwriting (Guess what? The song ends with a breakdown, which is either the main riff but slower, or randomly segmented 000 chugs). Not saying there aren't good examples of Deathcore, but much of it is interchangeable. (EDIT: oh, and the band names - 7:40)
Kinda surprised that Antagony didn't get a mention for early deathcore. Suicide Nation also mixed deathcore and black metal, first album came out in 98
Whoa, I remember starting to get into the whole 2000s deathcore (and the whole "scene emo-core stuff" in general) when I was like 15/16 years old, back in 2013 (I recently turned 27). By then the whole "Myspace Deathcore" boom was already kinda gone (besides I'm from Chile so that stuff always reaches us with some delay lmao), but for a while I was very into Suicide Silence, early BMTH, and other scene kid stuff (besides Slipknot and even some bands here in Chile that played around with those styles). Later on I kinda "overgrew" it and started to get into more proper death, black metal, hardcore punk, etc. Looking back I cherish some of that core stuff with nostalgia because it served me as a gateway into more heavy and extreme music, but only now that I have a much broader repertoire of heavy music I realize how most of it was honestly really lame. Really flat, soulless music, and I blame it mostly on the disconnection with that hardcore roots, and the loss of that punk vibe and attitude that early metallic hardcore and metalcore bands had. I will sometimes go back to scene stuff like Suicide Silence and Motionless in White for the nostalgic ties but that's about it. And also boy let's address the elephant on the room: Why do so many core dudes get turn out to be s3x-w4l abusers? :/ On a side note I would also like to highlight that there are many bands doing interesting things mixing extreme metal and hardcore, like Kruelty from Japan who mix death metal and hxc, actually playing something that we could consider "true modern deathcore" 😅😅😅. Aaaaand to end this already long comment I would like to recommend a core band from Chile that was fairly popular in the early 2010s. They are called Aneurisma and I think they aged pretty well. Their last album "Ciclos" from 2013 shortly before breaking up shows a very mature sound with influences from post rock and even a bit of shoegaze. I listen to it till this time and I really think it stood the taste of time: m.th-cam.com/video/lueGA_JuiZk/w-d-xo.html So that's it, sorry for the long comment 😅 Keep up the good work!
One band you forgot about for 90’s deathcore, Pyrexia. System of the Animal basically set the blueprint for bands like despised icon and whitechapel. And I’d argue that a lot of the MySpace era bands like Chelsea grin, suicide silence, bring me the horizon, and emmure were already incorporating nu metal influences before the 2010’s. Like most of those bands best riffs were lifted straight from korn, slipknot, and deftones.
the "core" stuff was always kinda boring and cringy to me. In my area, it was the most common route for emo kids trying to be edgy and get laid, so I probably got a bad impression of it. That being said, I realize the stuff I listen to is likely only appealing to certain people, and it's all subjective. As long as someone out there enjoys it, I'm not mad about it.
Emo is not "core". But "core" at least nowadays, is closer to emo than anything related to the predecessor hardcore \ metal core bands. The emo kids took over the scene and made it their own thing. It's cool if you like it or don't, but that's my honest assessment.
@rootgrevil really not true metalcore is probably the most broad metal genre ever it just sounds like your only focusing on the post hardcore side of it coz I dare you to tell me converge is emo
So I had to look into converge after reading this, (and I have to say I dig it). But they formed in 1990, and aren't really the kind of band I'm talking about, I guess. Maybe I didn't articulate it well. Bands like converge are what I originally considered to be metal core. Heavy hardcore punk and death metal styles combined. As i got older Most people I know considered metal core to be bring me the horizon and as i lay dying, etc. This is a discussion as old as metal music though, getting lost in the weeds over sub genres. Lol
@rootgrevil oh wow fair enough converge is amazing yes they are older but also again metalcore is very broad and like yes there is emo Influenced bands there's also plenty that aren't honestly it's so hard to tell what is metalcore anymore aha
@@duhquadmanthey kind of got grafted into deathcore by default lol. They looked and acted like hardcore kids. They only toured with core bands. I can see why
I personally hate it, its as if they took all the braindead parts of death metal and packaged it for scene kids. There are some exceptions but only for certain moments and maybe 1 or 2 songs, just out of sheer novelty. Why would I want a cheap hamburger (deathcore) when I can have a grade A sirloin steak (death metal).
Darko, Brand of Sacrifice, Spite, Humanity’s last breath, alluvial ( if you count them as deathcore) new Lorna is amazing but half of the last album was mid
There are crappy bands in every sub-genre of metal. But honestly, many songs by Lorna Shore are tiny masterpieces. And Fit For An Autopsy? Oh,it is a great band. Mental Cruelty? Awesome music.Thy Art Is Murder? Great band.
I got into metal when I was 17 in 2007. I listened to the elitists and commentators who said deathcore sucked. This was a mistake. I started getting into hardcore maybe 2019 or so and then sorta circled back to deathcore. There some great super original and talented deathcore bands. My favorite is definitely The Acacia Strain.
I just want to point this out, Deathcore has nothing to do with Hardcore Punk... Heavy Hardcore or Beatdown Hardcore is what DC bands took influence from. Punks typically dont go to ANY of these shows. Ask any Punk about bands like Hatebreed and they will straight up tell you that they are a Metal band. The actual fusion of Death Metal and Hardcore Punk is Grindcore which some punks do actually like and will go to those shows. Theres nothing punky about bands like Thy Art is Murder or Despised Icon. Not even close.
Alright, just finished the 90s section. I know you can't possibly name every single band or anything, and I'm actually incredibly impressed with what you have gotten. But I do need to mention WAR PRAYER, the band that turned into UNDYING, and were called deathcore back in the mid-90s, which you can find flyers of on the internet. You also mentioned DAY OF SUFFERING whose members previously were in a doom/death metal band called IN EMPTINESS; similarly, SPREAD THE DISEASE were formerly a chaotic hardcore emo band called KARENZA (who put out a 7" before the name and sound change) and members were also previously in emo/metalcore outfit NEW DAY RISING (their split LP with HOURGLASS is one of the heaviest hardcore releases of the 90s IMHO). There was also ABNEGATION from Erie, PA who went from an early metalcore sound to straight up brutal death metal. Then there was FALL SILENT from Reno whose '96 release No Strength to Suffer was absolutely crushing. Finally I would be remiss not to bring up BIRD OF ILL OMEN from the notoriously heavy FL hardcore scene, featuring members of other foundational metalcore bands like CULTURE, BRETHREN, SHAI HULUD, and MORNING AGAIN. This is really good work here, so keep it up!
From what I understood at the time, the problem wasn't the genre itself. The problem where these extremely annoying try hard pseudo emo kidy fans. In my opinion, it's a mostly cool genre - but an extremely annoying fan group that the genre is or was associated with.
They or some like acting real weird about it unless it fits to what they like personally but whatever I like never stops them so who cares? It's just unfortunate really I guess that favoritism makes public general assumptions of opinions that it's not great or whatever... I'd argue that some metal bands are "not great in general" but you'll still have some people out there that love them regardless because it's subjective no matter if they're a casual listener or an actual normie etc. EDIT: There I said it.

How do you gatekeep deathcore? The genre is basically mainstream now. There's a rise in deathcore purism amd elitism for sure though.
Also never heard anyone explicitly call Heaven Shall Burn a melodic deathcore band, but I am willing to agree with some of their releases!
Props to her for talking about the proto and 90s deathcore stuff, those bands get pretty overlooked and were way better than some of that MySpace crap

Deathcore is kinda like what 1990's pop punk used to be. 1000 bands you cannot tell one from the other.
the only deathcore band i've been able to get into is ion dissonance. in particular their solace album. it's more mathcore than deathcore though which is why it stands out. that album also has some grindcore elements as well.
It’s the Nu Metal of our day. Recycled riffs and lazy breakdowns.

REST IN POWER MITCH LUCKER
Don't forget Breakdowns had the real purpose to relax the hands of the guitar players ;) :D
@@mynamedontmind Man tell that to my tendinitis, going from fast verse to downpicking is just as hard half the time lol
Deathcore and metalcore breakdowns have 2 main problems:
1.) They are all the same.
Like any genre, there was some straight trash but there was some absolute gems. Thank you for this.

it's really not metal to be honest. it's more hardcore with metal elements. i feel like grindcore is actually metal with hardcore elements. depends on what type of grindcore though. there's the powerviolence stuff and then the death metal stuff. some deathcore bands could be classified as metal but more times than not it's closer to hardcore.

Old deathcore was in fact pretty good, the new stuff is disgustingly bad
A lot of the newer bands seem like they're just showing off their technical skills rather than playing music they're passionate about.

Hardcore/Hardcore punk literally has nothing to do with modern deathcore. It barely had anything to do with early deathcore music.

And that something is probably zero bitches.
@Necromass-w7r Having standards isn't an issue, it's that whiny sneering tone that makes you sound like an incel. Like I said, you can describe anything in the most condescending way possible to make it sound bad, it doesn't mean anything.

I thank deathcore for getting me into death metal and hardcore, both of which scratch an itch that most deathcore just can't for me anymore.

On a side note I would also like to highlight that there are many bands doing interesting things mixing extreme metal and hardcore, like Kruelty from Japan who mix death metal and hxc, actually playing something that we could consider "true modern deathcore" 😅😅😅.
I listen to it till this time and I really think it stood the taste of time: m.th-cam.com/video/lueGA_JuiZk/w-d-xo.html

Darko and Psycho frame are probably my favorite bands. They’re so good
the "core" stuff was always kinda boring and cringy to me. In my area, it was the most common route for emo kids trying to be edgy and get laid, so I probably got a bad impression of it. That being said, I realize the stuff I listen to is likely only appealing to certain people, and it's all subjective. As long as someone out there enjoys it, I'm not mad about it.
Emo isn't core

Why would I want a cheap hamburger (deathcore) when I can have a grade A sirloin steak (death metal).

DEAD WATER DROWNING???? Man your research is impeccable 👌🏼
Loved this band in the mid 2000s and saw them live at Summer Slaughter in 2010
I dig both the old and modern deathcore era, but with the modern you really have to search for the good bands amongst the ton of generic ones
My faith in Deathcore is on Darko right now
Darko, Brand of Sacrifice, Spite, Humanity’s last breath, alluvial ( if you count them as deathcore) new Lorna is amazing but half of the last album was mid
I think Lorna Shore is symphonic deathcore, Carnifex and infant annihilator are good deathcore bands
Darko is not deathcore
@@kingbeheaded6341 what are they
@@ronniejamesdio1234 Djenty metalcore with growling and chaotic songwriting
I love all of this!!! Thank you for this video.
Some Deathcore is great some sucks but that’s with everything
No deathcore is metalcore influenced by death metal
@@Milo-it1tf You have that backwards, deathcore is mostly death metal, if not then it's just metalcore that happens to have some death metally parts
What's the song at 0:18 I'm gonna fucking die
"2010's deathcore", half of it is like metalcore and even melodic death metal a little, but ok
so glad to see it coming back!!
From what I understood at the time, the problem wasn't the genre itself.
The problem where these extremely annoying try hard pseudo emo kidy fans.
In my opinion, it's a mostly cool genre - but an extremely annoying fan group that the genre is or was associated with.
Those deathcore music video snippets are so bad regardless of music.
