Mingus x5 has blown me away, quite simply gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous!!! Black Saint should be delivered tomorrow. Beautiful music that is a treasured piece of art, how much more impact can this hobby have on me?!?!?...breathtaking! Thanks Michael
Just picked up The Black Saint, and before even listening to it, the construction is remarkable. What an incredibly quality product. I am traveling, but I will listen as soon as I am home
Michael, these are exactly what you said: timeless beauty that every music lover deserves to own and enjoy. And don’t forget that next year is Mingus’ centennial, let’s start celebrating today. ;) I've just ordered mine.
I have several of these Acoustic Sounds releases, I really like them. I have Mingus*5, I will run out and pick up The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady after hearing your review!
Hi Michael....I bought my Sinner Sanit Lady last week....you are correct the sound of that record is amazing....wow !!!!....looking forward to the Coltrane...these reissues are just amazing.....Ed in New York....😎🍁🍂🍁🦃🍁🍂🍁
I just made a review of the AS release on our FB vinyl group, saying I could hardly imagine a better version than this, even though I never heard any other version before (i'm discovering Mingus). Haven't seen your video at that point, but now, i'm relieved! And yes, what a fantastic record!
Your channel should earn you a commission! I had previously concentrated on tracking down original copies of many of these LPs, but I'm now voraciously consuming audiophile re-releases versions purely on the basis that I'll experience a more 'pure' listening experience. I'm hooked!
Very glad I have both ordered! I was happily surprised to hear you say the 33's are better in this instance. I did not expect that. I cannot wait to listen to these myself.
Great to hear how well the 33 1/3 are. The 45s are always interesting, but I am going more and more in the direction of just choosing 33 1/3 if I want to just enjoy spinning the records. I have no problems getting up and switching sides, but on one my records each side is like 6 minutes which is a bit on the silly end. With how well vinyl and the pressings are these days I think 33 1/3 are more than good enough for me.Thanks again for great content!
Just got my 33 1/3 copy. Incredibly sounding. Thank you for the hint. It replaces my Jeanne Dielman copy which I got at about 2018, while no other releases were on the market. Though I must admit it was enjoyable and detailed like the high res stream, it thereby truly reaveled its digital origin. When it comes to resonance of the upright bass and physical listening experience, anybody needs to check out your recommended issue. Thank you so much. For the saint and the sinner lady I will stay with my Superior Viaduct pressing.
My MingusX5 arrived yesterday and exactly what i was thinking while listening to it…….. how timeless this record/ music is. So enjoyable. And looking forward to my The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady which will arrive probably in a few days…… its just so crazy that we get to buy all these reissues now and at a very good quality, JUST so HAPPY! And btw, thanks for all these reviews….. it makes my morning coffee more relaxing…… Cheers ☕️ (7am Philippine time). - Harley
Thanks for the comparison, Michael. It nice to know that the better sounding versions of these two important albums are both the ones that are most affordable + possible to buy and the ones present the music with the fewest interruptions (only 2 record-sides per album). You may need to change the name of your channel to "33 RPM Audiophile" ;-)
I 100% agree with you on TBS&SL. I like the 45RPM, but always felt it is lacking something, and then boom 33.3 made me realize it. Also, the 45rpm is kinda noisy for some reason. I have nothing to compare Mingus Mingus, but it sounds phenomenal, so I doubt I will need another copy.
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady have so much CATHARSIS (5 times). Only few pieces of music really have this, like Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps, I think. Again good video. Your presentation is honest.
Very interesting Michael I did get the Mingus x5 by Acoustic sounds yes it’s stunning I’m going to grab the BLack Saint love your comparisons your always dead on thanks Michael your channel definitely his very helpful and informative. Lovellandrew
Thanks for the big recommendation. After watching your video I decided to get the new issue of this album to upgrade from the Superior Viaduct issue that I had. It’s much better!
These two are on a Federal Express vehicle on the way to my address. I have the Superior Viaduct rerelease of Black Saint and was quite pleased with it - that was my first experience with the album. Of course it’s a masterpiece.
I have the Black Saint Superior Viaduct as well so was not planning on getting this pressing but I'm looking forward to your comparison between the two.
Oh man... bad timing Michael... ;-) I just placed my Analogue Productions order with a small but nice little Black Friday discount RIGHT BEFORE you uploaded this video. And of course I thought about these two albums, too. But I didn´t ad them to the cart because I didn´t know If they were any good. Now you´re telling me that these are demo quality... I just e-mailed Acoustic Sounds - maybe they can still add them to the order, otherwise I´ll probably have to wait till next Christmas... Or maybe I´m lucky... :-) Anyways... thanks for your interesting and informative reviews. Keep 'em coming :D
They will be super busy with holiday orders... You'll probably catch them in time. I have made 4 or 5 big orders with AS and there is usually a few days wait before they get to press the order.
Michael, yes indeed, I loved Mingus x5, sound wise and to my musical taste as well. Regarding this series, have you also reviewed the Ella Fitzgerald? That is also amazing
Exciting about the 33 Black Saint winning out, not to toot my own horn but I believe I wrote, expecting this to be the case back when we got Out of the Cool. I never liked the sound of my 45 too much and thought it might use a worse tape. Now Im very eager to get my hands on the 33 and compare for myself. If I conclude the same then I feel even more strongly in my theory that AP got (for some releases) inferior tapes for their 2011 45s. Since the fire had just happened recently they may not have been able to relocate all the best tapes yet and got ones that Universal could find at the time. I dont see how else a Kevin Gray 45RPM mastering can ever lose to an RKS 33, even as I think 45 can be overrated ;^)
It is possible that we are seeing improvement on record sound even in the past 10 years. Mastering chains, vinyl formulation, just care for the product seems to be higher on audiophile products. My take on 33 vs 45 is if it's rock/pop and under 35 minutes I prefer to have the 33 pretty much all the time if there is an equivalent audiophile pressing. For Jazz I prefer to have the 33 almost always (unless it's a super long album like Miles Davis Porgy and Bess which is over 50 minutes long and recently reissued as a 45rpm by MOFI). With Jazz I like to sit back and groove more compared to listening consciously to folk or rock
Since Herbie Hancocks Maiden Voyage from the Classic Series seems to have gone I will be able to purchase Mingus Mingus Mingus from Acoustic Sounds hopefully before next year. I don't get The Black Saint sorry.
Chad will be repressing some of the 45rpm versions of these, and possibly these Mingus albums will be included. Maybe the represses under QRP with better vinyl formulation will be better than the previous ones.
@@Michael45RPM Thanks! There is a nice ending, though - the store are sending me another vinyl (without the jacket) and they don't even require me to send the defective one back. So all is good :)
I feel BS&SL is a more experimental album than MingusX5, Mingus’s gorgeous sounding bass isn’t in the spotlight as much as on the MingusX5 like the track ‘Mood Indigo’. It seems that BS&SL has a more collective vibe, a little less polish that others might find more appealing than MingusX5. I prefer MingusX5 personally because it’s more cohesive in terms of the bands performance and that fantastic bass sound. Sound-wise, pressing-wise there both incredible releases that I think set a new high watermark in how these jazz reissues can sound……And let’s not forget those stunning Stoughton jackets! We are truly living in great times.
Hi Micheal, what are your thoughts on these album's pricing/value? As vinyl continues to become more popular, I could see where most vinyl will be worth less in 10 years than it is worth today.
I am disappointed with Pallas. As I delved into this record collecting thing, I started to hear the Pallas name get talked about and went out of my way to buy Pallas pressed records on various labels. I have had so many substandard records by them. There is no doubt they CAN make beautiful sounding records but way too many of my Pallas pressings have serious issues. It got to the point where I started to expect at least 2 or 3 very distracting noisy patches when I opened and played a new Pallas record. The very frustrating thing is, the problems look like they are easily avoidable, the result of a lack of basic care. debris allowed to get into the mastering/stamper/pressing process, careless handling etc. It's frustrating since I pay more for higher quality records to minimise problems since I live in the southern hemisphere and returning dud records is not feasible.
Hi Michael! I like your effort but after a repeating shoot-out the result is you are wrong. The Black Saint 33 1/3 cannot touch the older 45. On a very hi-end equipment the 33 1/3 , yes is punching in your face but in a very annoying way. No way, at least on the first two tracks, it is nearly as good sounding as the 45 rpm. Please shoot-out again yourself or have your equipment checked. Never mind!

that might very well be the case Roberto
I can’t agree unfortunately , the 45 RPM of Mingus, Mingus, Mingus has clearly more anbiance and room information than the 33 RPM to my ears.
Do you think you’ll be picking up the Quincy Jones vmp anthology?
Kevin hat ca. seit 2014 ein neue Masteringkonsole, von da an gab es auch eine neue Qualität.
