Hi I'm here over 3 years too late but I'm watching Critical Role for the first time and let me just say that "This is a grizzly situation" was SUCH an overlooked joke in the moment and both Scanlan and Sam need to be protected at all costs.
Man, when Travis is gone the group takes forever deciding what to do. They spent 20 minutes decided on whether to rest XD. It's nice when Grog just runs down a path rather than let the group deliberate about it.
Because he starts getting impatient since Grog can't usually contribute to the decision making. In the second campaign, though, Travis' character may as well be the de facto leader of the group.
I've always been of the opinion most, if not all (so long as the players are fine with it), campaigns benefit from an idiot character who can force the party's hand if they're indecisive.

They were in the Underdark and constantly in danger of dying themselves but it is a little concerning how they didn't even seem to remember all the prisoners they didn't try to save.
I checked. She didn't have it on the queen. She forgot to do it twice. So Matt was deciding if he was going to be forgiving or not/ trying to remember if she did it.
I just want to be that guy and point out that she did not transfer the hunters mark to the Queen because she forgot to do so before attacking in the previous battle. It is in fact on the dead king. Derp derp.
Matt actually mentions it in one of the interviews. Something along the lines of "she has a bear to protect her, but she never uses it." It was something about how devastated she would be if trinket died.
Honestly, Percy makes such little impact in both conversation and battle that I forget he's there half the time. It's nice to see him take center stage for once.
Percy: "Lady Kima, as I'm sure you know, grief speaks before sense-" *clearly trying to get Keyleth to stop* Keyleth: All I'm saying, Lady Kima, is..." *immediate look of frustration/defeat from Taliesin*
The amount of pure stress Laura goes through every time Trinket is in peril is incredible, and this episode nearly led me to tears as well, due to that.
honestly of all the people most in tune with there character Sam gets so into scanlan its fucking great. Everytime I see his shit eating grin I wanna go out for drinks and shit. dudes awesome
Just voicing something doesn't mean they're fans of what they did work on. They haven't played all the games they've voiced in or watched all the anime they've been in. It's a job. Super heroes just happen to be awesome and Travis likes them. Even if he wasn't Thor or Hulk I'm sure he'd go see the movie.
So here I am in 2020 and I’ve noticed that Matt Mercer doesn’t say “kind of” anymore when he is describing things he can’t quite picture he’s just gotten even better. It has also made me realize I say “sort of” when dming as a habit from watching CR. Matt has gotten so much better at his craft
I noticed the same thing. Some of the sequences, such as when they were escaping the Druegar war-camp, were pretty sloppy. You don't see that these days. He's improved a lot.
'Sort/kind of', 'just', and 'like' are stalling transitions for descriptions. And considering they are not exactly used to being ON CAMERA or playing this nerd game (before it was widely accepted), I don't blame him at all.

Scanlan-“I am gonna use vicious mockery and call the monster a girl!” Laura, Marisha, and Ashley-“What is that supposed to mean?!?!” It was at this moment, he knew that he had fucked up.

holy shit its insane when you think about the fact that the exchange between keyleth and kima around minute 50 is fully improvised. these guys are really something else
@Michael Mclellan i agree, matt obviously had an entire speech ready as he kept looking at a sheet of paper while voicing kima in that moment. Combine this with the fact marisha is his wife, it is rather obvious they had discussed this in advance to progress the story.
@@smilingbear7430 I don't think they had discussed to bring it up at this very moment, but most likely Keyleth's dislike of people claiming to enforce the will of the gods is something they talked about before (maybe it also has shown in their private game before they started streaming it) and Matt had parts of Kima's speach pepared for whichever moment it would come up. There might have been better moments to prompt such a discussion, but form the way Matt played Kima, he clearly had planned for some conflict between her and Keyleth.
I like how they have such distrust in the paladin that has a reputation of being honorable and overall a good person who has the faith and backing of their friend Allura while they have a literal monster who they know is insane and they know strait up eats people brains in their camp that they don’t question or sequester about their reliability to the group.
Eehhh that same "goodly paladin of Bahamut" pinned a disarmed, defenceless duergar to a wall with a sword through the gut, used the pain of it (effectively torture) to force info out of him then twisted the blade to kill him in the most painful way possible. I wouldn't trust her either. At least Clarota is up front with his evil.
@@iank472 I hope you do understand that they found her naked, with hooks in her skin, and had been tortured for days, if not a week or more by the Duregar? Are you shaming her for that? Really?
@@slipstream5762 nope I'm not shaming her at all. I'm pointing out that a paladin of Bahamut who violently and painfully murders someone, regardless of circumstances, risks severing their connection to their Patron. Bahamut traditionally isn't the most flexible of Gods when it comes to morality. It's perfectly understandable why she did it but she is still a paladin of a Lawful Good God.
Well Clarota, despite his creepy nature, has been at least mostly cooperative and even friendly with the party. Keema on the other hand, despite the party saving her, pretty much immediately started making demands of the party while ignoring their requests of her, and was all around not too fun to actually hang out with. It's understandable why they'd like Clarota more.
I gotta say that Dungeons and Dragons increased my vocabulary. I was young and started out with the basic and expert boxed sets. There were a lot of words that I'd never heard before, and still don't hear outside of the game. I kept a large dictionary with my D&D stuff, regularly needing to look up some of the words.
As a zemnian(german) this is perfect to learn new words. Dnd in general taught me so many vocabs (eg. Dexterity, Constitution, prone, restrained...) I always try to improve my school english with watching/reading in english and Cr is so much fun too
I sometimes wonder if it had to do with having a stammer as a kid (as he’s mentioned in the past). I’ve heard stories about people with a stammer increasing their vocabulary as a way to pick a new word if they’re stuck on a word.
True, but it feels a bit hypocritical - for someone who gets on other peoples case for killing so much, Keyleth consistently makes basically no effort to avoid accidentally killing people, and does it a lot.
I just started watching in Campaign 2, and I'm going through Campaign 1 now, and man... it just really feels like Marisha goes out of her way to pick fights no matter what character she's playing. She usually starts the same way each time, with an antagonistic question. I really can't figure her out in this show, in either campaign. Man, I hope it's all just for the characters and that Matt doesn't get earfuls of that at home.
She is young. Think of like this: she has this high image of herself, a benevolent image because her tribe demands it, as a druid, but her actions contradict herself not because she wants to, but because things turn out that way. She pushed someone into lava as she was in the middle of a fight, killed a child and a dwarf by mistakes. I like D&D cause you might want to be something, but your actions change what other people view your character. But the hilarious thing about Keyleth is she tries so hard to be good, but the universe seems to want her to be in the other side.
Started watching a couple of weeks ago. Percy slaughtering that abyssal abomination with Bad News and rolling a natural 20 to boot has to be my favorite kill of the campaign so far.
This was the first ever episode of critical roll i saw as i was browsing twitch. Had no idea what playing dnd was like prior to this. This show brought me into the game and i'm so happy for it. Thank you to everyone at Geek and Sundry and thank you critical roll for showing me an amazing game.
When confronted with the problem of trinket, the party feels like a bunch of geniuses when they realize they can polymorph him. Then, for weight issues, they turn him into a kitten, instead of some kind of giant useful flying creature: this was the moment I sprayed milk and cheerios all over my monitor.
I also noticed it ❤! As a married old guy myself, that was heartwarming haha I came here after starting with C3 and watched till ep 30. The chemistry with all the group was already in place and couples were married. So, coming here to the very beginning of all this and seeing that wink was soooo beautiful 😊😊
I wonder... When the GM realized that the group found a way to fly over the sea of glass and bone, did he only then add the duergar group under attack, whose screams sounded a little like Grog? If so, that was a wonderful way to make them engage with that creature he prepared for them...
+AnkokuEvangeline I think the bone floor was something different then the creature cuz they've been seeing signs of that creature for a while and the bones draged it under. he just put them together because without a distraction the bone floor isnt so bad
s1ientdeath That wasn't my point, though. Both the creature and the bone floor were clearly prepared beforeheand. What might have been added on the spot was their fresh duergar victims.
+AnkokuEvangeline Marisha Ray gave and interview that said "We later learned that if you didn’t move during your turn, you had to save against being pulled underground to your doom by cursed skeleton hands!" So he always planned on them making it over, just not very easily.

A single ball of light illuminating the surroundings of the party. And outside of their vision, there could be anything. It's utter darkness. Almost complete silence, in this vast, underground graveyard.
The moment Matt finished with the description I paused the video and googled because I was curious someone drew that
No results real bummer
Shame, it's really cool. Too bad i suck at drawing otherwise i'd do it.

Hi I'm here over 3 years too late but I'm watching Critical Role for the first time and let me just say that "This is a grizzly situation" was SUCH an overlooked joke in the moment and both Scanlan and Sam need to be protected at all costs.
Lol yes he does
Couldn't agree more. Came from harmonsquest and this is waaaay better
Welcome to the fam!
Glad to see new people are still discovering this crazy and amazing show. Enjoy the ride!
Same here. Lol.
@@notrod5341 My character, and another character, died (and failed all three death saves lol) after our impulsive/idiot character set off a trap. It was still fun, though. My new character attended my old character's funeral.

@@darkbunny9994 As a lover of dwarves, this is very upsetting.
They were in the Underdark and constantly in danger of dying themselves but it is a little concerning how they didn't even seem to remember all the prisoners they didn't try to save.

I just want to be that guy and point out that she did not transfer the hunters mark to the Queen because she forgot to do so before attacking in the previous battle. It is in fact on the dead king. Derp derp.
If only Scanlan beat the monster with his Savage Insults, I would have died of laughter. "How do you want to do this?" "I INSULT HIS MOTHER!"

Why are people calling Trinket useless? I hear he gives expert massages, so he can't be that useless. Yeah?
didnt he pull the one character out of the lava last episode?
I believe so, yes.
So not useless, just under utilized!
Matt actually mentions it in one of the interviews. Something along the lines of "she has a bear to protect her, but she never uses it." It was something about how devastated she would be if trinket died.

Keylith's soapbox moment begins here. What an imbecil...
Wouldn't call her an imbecile. But that was a really awkward and pretty soapbox-y
Just watch Laura's face throughout Keyleth's soapbox rants. Absolutely hilarious and takes away a lot of the awkward tension.
Cringey Keyleth at it again. 😬
She has some moments like this in Campaign 2 as well. I think it's a Marisha thing, not a Keyleth thing.
Kima: I am a woman of action
Tiberius: Ah, well it looks like we have something in common!

The amount of pure stress Laura goes through every time Trinket is in peril is incredible, and this episode nearly led me to tears as well, due to that.
When Kaylin said "Nothing good is ever tentacle-y," it looked for a second that Matt was going to respond as Clarota.
I saw that! Someone else started talking and I think that’s the only reason he didn’t. I would’ve loved to hear what Clarota had to say lol

Well of course Travis had to see The Avengers. He voices Thor in a lot of the animated series
Not to mention his character is actually awol, so he would be bored out of his mind waiting to play again
You don't think they knew he would be gone so Matt devised a way to remove him for the time being and at the same time progress the story?
The dude is actually Thor he hides it really fuckin well
So here I am in 2020 and I’ve noticed that Matt Mercer doesn’t say “kind of” anymore when he is describing things he can’t quite picture he’s just gotten even better.
And considering they are not exactly used to being ON CAMERA or playing this nerd game (before it was widely accepted), I don't blame him at all.

holy shit its insane when you think about the fact that the exchange between keyleth and kima around minute 50 is fully improvised. these guys are really something else
@Michael Mclellan i agree, matt obviously had an entire speech ready as he kept looking at a sheet of paper while voicing kima in that moment. Combine this with the fact marisha is his wife, it is rather obvious they had discussed this in advance to progress the story.
@@smilingbear7430 where they married at this point?
@@smilingbear7430 I don't think they had discussed to bring it up at this very moment, but most likely Keyleth's dislike of people claiming to enforce the will of the gods is something they talked about before (maybe it also has shown in their private game before they started streaming it) and Matt had parts of Kima's speach pepared for whichever moment it would come up. There might have been better moments to prompt such a discussion, but form the way Matt played Kima, he clearly had planned for some conflict between her and Keyleth.
Wait till you find out it’s all improvised
Seems like an entirely normal conversation to me. With uncalled for hostility from Keyleth.
Matt: *Says something to the effect of "monster has teeth in its throat".*
Ashley: "Ex-squeeze me?"
"are they in an underground base?"
yes, everything here is an underground base.
Every time I watch these I wonder just how big Matt’s vocabulary is
I bet he's been devouring anything with a hint of ''fantasy'' on the cover for years now.
It's all toothy maws and ichor.
"Are you congratulating us for murder?" - Keyleth the child killer
It's. A. Game.
