  • In episode 9, we explore the bounds of citizenship for the newly released slaves on the Sea Islands of South Carolina during the Port Royal Experiment. If slaves were treated like freedmen, were they not citizens? And if the privileges of citizenship were extended to refugee slaves, was the Civil War indeed a conflict about slavery?

1:06 Imagine the loss, the struggle, the horrible treatment by a race of people who were too lazy to cultivate the land they stole from the Native original people, enslave people from another country and make them work for free and call them lazy. Imagine what things these people in this picture endured and the victories they never were able to experience because of the selfishness of slavery of a great people.
