  • The women's rights movement in America was directly influenced by the work of the abolitionist movement. By 1863, the abolitionist and women's rights advocate Sojourner Truth had spent more than twenty years speaking out against slavery. She was a remarkable case, but the Civil War saw many female heroes. During the war, American women threw themselves into public life with an enthusiasm born out of a sense of duty.

Jodi Restler could play Mrs. Truth in a film, she could also play Rosa Parks in a movie about Dr. King.

In the 1990's both PBS and C-span sent camera crews to a Michigan militia meeting. C-Span set their camera up in one place and let it run. PBS cameraman and interviewer talked to the militia members, attempting to prove they were white extremists. One problem: almost half the members were black and proudly wearing camouflage uniforms and the co-leader was black. Watching on C-span, it was almost funny watching the PBS duo walk in circles as they interviewed the white leader and did their best to keep his black friend & co-leader out of the picture. The White leader kept trying to talk about how their founding was closely related to Sojourner Truth's story in Michigan. Every time her name came up, the interviewer interrupted him.
Too bad the interviewer came with an agenda. It would have been a great time to learn why Sojourner's story still had personal repercussions over a century later.
