I actually found the original bolt. I also had a suggestion because I ran in to the same issue with the alternator not fitting at first. I recommend measuring the bottom of the alternator compared to the original. If its the same size like in my case you may just need to take a small sledge hammer and tap it in some and then pry the bottom in to place while pushing in the bolt. To get space to tap the alternator in this case you would need to remove the bottom radiator hose. This would be better than filing anything in my opinion.

Good advice... One more thing you should do is... After you turn the vehicle on and test the voltage, turn on some accessories (High beams, rear defogger, heater fan etc..), then test your voltage again and make sure you are still getting adequate voltage (12.5+). Even at idle, a good alternator should keep proper charge on your battery even with your accessories on. You shouldn't have to rev your engine to get the proper charge providing you have no other issues. Thanks!

I got an OEM from the local Toyota dealership parts department. It would not go in, even with some grinding. I'm going to try some more grinding tomorrow. It's sad because I probably could have gotten by with merely replacing the belt. :-( Not an easy job.

My neighbor said the protruding round thing that makes it toooo tight os a bushing ..... if you tap it with a hammer it goes back in and you can get the new one in. It still is tight but you can get it in ! .... We did !

You can always give it a try let it soak in penatration fluid and try and tap it in, some times it's easier just to file it down.

@@ghostlyrich You don't file the alternator. that bushing is made to be pressed back into the bracket so the alternator slides right in..

The link I posted is in reference the the alternator "hold down" bolt, that allows the alternator to act as the tensioner pulley for the belt.

I have a 92 toyota pickup and the power steering pump was leaking on to the alt and it caught fire and burnt the wiring and alt. After I removed the alt for replacement I noticed that the top bolt was missing from the alt. I guess I had the bottom bolt tight enough to keep the tension on belt. Anyway does anyone know the size of the top bolt?

The top bolt is an alternator "hold down" bolt. It allows the alternator to be the tensioner/adjustment pully for the belt. Very specific bolt. I couldn't find it anywhere except for a 22RE engine fabricator (not sure if that's what exactly to call him) who's business is based in California. Only about $3, so I bought 2. With shipping it cost me only $17! Get the correct bolt, it will make a huge difference in the performance of your alternator.

Hi, on my car, the alternator red wire was not connected to anything. Does it need to be connected to the red terminal (positive) of my battery. Can I directly wire it to my battery. I have been unable to find where it leads to in my 2004 chevy cavalier

gruanger oh wow yea if your alternator power wire is not hooked up you can run a 4 gauge power wire from that post to the batter. make sure you put a fuse on it to by the battery

it's an alternator; not an alt!!! it's millimeter;not mil!!! problem is how to remove "alt" from engine compartment! need to concentrate more on that!!!
