On the road after 8 years, BUT...

  • After being off the road for 8 years and being refurbished over a year, my 2003 ROW spec Defender passed its MOT and is now road legal. I find myself getting to know the vehicle again and it seems to be down on power...

The performance issue is almost certainly a fault with the boost side of the fuel system. Check the pipe from the compressor housing to the boost housing on the injection pump, and if you don’t find anything, lift the top off the pump to check the condition of the diaphragm and make sure the boost pin and the small horizontal pin that it engages on near the bottom of the well are free to move.
I’m fairly sure that battery security is part of the MoT, so it shouldn’t have passed without being clamped or tied down. Do that soon regardless - you don’t want en electrical fire because of the battery moving.

Doing the same in Germany. Got an '86 Utility Wagon that imbalanced rear brakes. Replaced the shoes, seals, and bearings, but now waiting for some paperwork to come through so I can get it re-inspected. Lose sleep and bite my nails over it.

Congratulations! Great job getting it back on the road, it must feel great to finally drive it again after all these years! Will be interesting to see why it's down on power. Thanks for the videos and doing what you do.

Have a look at the vacuum boost control pipe, see if it hasn't got a hole in it. That will affect how the diaphragm works

Looks great, the lift looks to be more than 2".

Variable geometry turbos are known for the vanes sticking. If they were stuck closed, you'd have an over-boost situation, but if they were stuck open it just wouldn't spool up. The latter sounds very much like what you're having.

No red reflectors on the rear? Always assumed it was a legal requirement. I just fitted a pair on mine today being half way through a nuts n bolts rebuilt of the body, it's more enjoyable now I've finished sanding back to metal and repainting each panel in Alpine white💪

Have you checked your brake servo? They are known for cracking, thus not holding the vacumn.

If it’s not fuel or the clutch it could be air, into the intercooler. Mine has loose hose, killed the power. VNT turbos don’t have as much of a lag like you described on you tdi. Looking forward to what it is for you. Fuel pump or filter would the cheapest to figure out. Britrest has lots of good troubleshooting vids

Check your timing belt and pump. I bet the pump is out, easy to fix.

I think your mot station is being very picky ! I have a 110 station wagon and the 2nd row seats have been removed, but the seat belts still remain. Although classified as a 9 seater on the log book there is no way they could check the 4 side facing seats/ belts in the back as they're covered by a bed system. Never been questioned at 3 different mot stations in 9 years.

Thats a VNT turbo, you can tell by the angle the actuator is mounted at (perpendicular instead of parallel to the spindle).
I’d start with the filters as at 8 years they need doing anyway.
Then check the vac lines on the turbo.
If its possable to get to the turbo actuator linkage you should be able to move it against its spring with some pliers fairly easilly.
A split charge hose or intercooler would make it down on power but you’d probubly hear it.
Does it start easilly? If its a bit lumpy initially (and the glow plugs work) with maybe a bit of white smoke and generally a very soft engine note then the timing could be a bit retarded which can make it gutless. Too much timing and it’ll want to black smoke and sound quite harsh.

A 2.8TGV with the VNT turbo should pull much better than that.

    Timing fractionally out?
