Before I was allowed to watch all these horror movies as a kid, I would go browse the horror section and stare at their VHS art. My imagination cooked up all sorts of awesome films that never really resembled the actual movies haha.

During my years as a staffer in the Marvel Bullpen, I somehow got invited to a pre-release studio screening of this film and went back to work the following day with my mind blown. I told all of my colleagues that it was a must-see and that there was another screening of it that very evening, so I managed to corral half of the Bullpen to see it. They loved it, and one of the most fun aspects of the screening was that they gave out rubber body parts with safety pins as souvenirs. I got a severed tongue that I wore on my trench coat's lapel for the better part of the next two months.

Also of note are the model shots of the streetcars, brilliantly executed.

Bit of trivia, remember Peter Jackson's King Kong? In the ship's hold, you can see a Sumatran Rat Monkey crate in the background. Another? In the funeral scene from Dead Alive, the song playing on the organ is "Sodomy", which was used in another of his previous movies, "Meet the Feebles".

    One of my favorite movies...
Braindead had alot of extra gore...and some cool little scenes with extra plot points that were cut out in the US DeadAlive versiob...
And i dont beleive nobody mentioned the Malcolms Uncle...
He was one of the best parts of the movie...
    And the Funeral scene...lmfao...
    OH AND AGAIN

I’m glad you did this movie. Either this or Bad Taste would’ve been awesome episode-wise. The bum cheering on the baby getting beat up is awesome!

I wish they would return to the former VHS cover. That woman with a skull in her mouth has nothing to do with the movie.

Which one? There are several VHS covers. The Japanese one with the baby sitting on the woman's lap is my favourite.

Okay, this is the best Monster Madness ever. I've wanted to see Phantasm and Dead Alive on here for a while. Dead Alive is one of my favorite horror movies, period, and probably my favorite horror comedy.
    "Your mother ate my dog!"
    "Not all of it."
But... Sumatran Rat Monkey, not Sumerian Rat Monkey. Sumerian would be the ancient equivalent of present-day Iraq, lol.
And no, Dead Alive wasn't really cut for gore, but for time. Jackson couldn't use the title (There was already a Brain Dead in the U.S.), so they gave him a budget to redo the title sequence, and he had enough left over to recut the whole movie to tighten it up. I do believe there was one major zombie death that gets cut though (either the priest or the biker, I forget), so I guess that is one flaw of Dead Alive, but having seen both, I prefer Dead Alive.

Fun collaboration fact; the actor who plays Lionel's mom (Elizabeth Moody)? She also plays one of the Sackville-Baggins in Fellowship.

I think you already talked a little bit about this movie in one of monster madness episodes, but I might be mistaken. Anyway, movie is a masterpiece - it's sad we have no more such movies in modern era, I mean we have some good ones, but nothing unique like that.

fun fact: this film was so gory and cartoony it was allowed to be released largely unedited in UK even with the worry of "video nasties" because censors believed it couldn't be taken seriously so gave it a pass.
