In this video, we look into how things went from bad to worst, resulting in new records being set for Windies Cricket and the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup, but in the most heartbreaking way possible.

As a English kid who first started watching cricket in the 90s I used to be terrified of the WIndies.Walsh/Ambrose peppering out batsman and Lara/Chanderpaul seemingly able to bat for hours. It's been sad to watch the slow decline, cricket needs to do more to help nations outside of the top 3 I think. The stronger and more competitive world cricket is, the more eyes will be on the product long term

@@KamleshMallick No, individual nations would do worse, and will only ever be associate teams. the problem with West Indies are not enough playing time (the league is too short most players play only 7 regional ODI games within one month for the entire year. if you have a bad month then you don't get looked at and if luck has to wait another year for redemption, and if you are in form but too young, then you lay and rot for another year. Some players are lucky to play in T20 franchises, but most WI players that do don't even play for the West Indies!!) and poor-quality coaching. It's a boys' club here, they only want to hire black coaches. It's something that won't change if they divide into many smaller teams.

The thing is, the rot set in years ago. I remember Windies teams in the late 90s being crap fielders and batting like millionaires.
But they had enough truly elite, once in a generation, players to get away with it. Gayle, Lara, Chanderpaul, Hooper, Ambrose, Walsh to name a few.
But once they went and the grassroots investment got cut and more players started playing franchise cricket to supplement the lousy incomes from Windies cricket.... it's all downhill.

Giving credit where credit is due.
This Dutch team has been absolutely phenomenal in the last few years or so. Hardly anyone watched the Pakistan vs Netherlands 3 match ODI series prior to the Asia Cup in 2022. But those few who did, know that it was tight. The Netherlands were barely stopped from beating us in 2 of the 3 games, only reason they lost was the death bowling of Wasim Jr, Naseem and Haris.
They had an excellent T20WC, qualifying in a difficult group in the 1st round, and then somehow managing to beat SA. You can imagine the look of shock on my face, as I got up at 7 am,thinking this was the day Pakistans WC campaign came to a close and the absolute delight I felt as the words "SA need 40 runs from 24 balls to win" flashed across the TV as I turned it on.
They will be the underdogs in the CWC for sure, one upset is guaranteed at least.

The sad thing is, seeing things on the inside from club level, there is no hope for reformation anytime soon, there is too much politics involved, we lack money and resources and also proper rebuilding strategy.
Our players are very t20 focused and it’s all they play for anymore yet as a cricket nation we are still failing at international t20. Essentially we are doomed with no hope for the future, because the people who want to rebuild aren’t able to, and the people who can rebuild it don’t care to.

@@KamleshMallickGiving up on the concept of the West Indies means giving up on the idea of the Caribbean/West Indian region being a cohesive political, economic and cultural unit, the very thing people put their political and business careers on the line over as it is the consensus that no island can truly go at it alone Singapore-style and we need each other to survive, no matter how much we get on each other's nerves. So no, that will never happen unless people have seriously lost faith in the regional project first as the WI cricket is the last remnant of a time when the whole region was a political unit, and perhaps is aspiration for when we could be one again. So nope, unless things get really bad on a political, economic and cultural level that an island decides to go rogue, it'll never happen because the people and governments will never let that happen

As a fan of cricket it is good to see teams like Ireland, Netherlands, UAE and Zimbabwe come up and able to beat teams like the West Indies, but a bit sad to see what they have become.
I think franchises and T20 cricket are some for the things behind what has happened here. It looks like they play there 1 day cricket like a T20 instead of the hybrid test and T20 game it is. I really hope that the ICC release or come up with a better schedule in the future that can successfully have international cricket across all 3 formats work out.
Currently one day cricket is starting to fall away and only gets played in World Cup years and very little every other year and with franchise cricket becoming where the money is I fear that international cricket will suffer too, With probably the exception of a couple of teams being able to play there best teams.

I grew up and played cricket in Barbados during the Walsh, Ambrose, and Lara era. That era was the start, in my opinion, of applied analytics in cricket. This is where West Cricket was left behind. We continued to this day depending on "individual" cricket to win matches when the game has evolved to being a FULLY "team applied" sport.
60% to 80% of winning the game of Cricket is now based on what was done off the field, and this includes but not limited to; amount of time to prepare, the study of the opposition, data analytics for both WI team and opponents, and team chemistry events outside of training.
Our biggest challenge here in the West Indies, is the WICB. The game has evolved, but not the minds of those who continue to manage our team, and the fandom while dwindling, is growing fed up of this level of mismanagement and embarrassment.
I heard a caller on a popular radio show program (What Drives Me Crazy) here in Barbados, he made a call for a fresh perspective, "try a female leader as head of WICB".
This video was an excellent assessment of some of the challenges facing the WI Team. Cheers to that, and I am now subscribed!

Windie's are my second team, countries & the people from around the Carribbean have that similar laid back vibe that we Aussie's have in our day to day lives. It's been devo watching the Windie's slide to the bottom of world cricket. U don't wanna see any country in the cricketing world fall to where they're now. If it wasn't for the Windie's working side by side with Australia then ODI cricket wouldn't have happened or wouldn't have been a success as a format. To watch the Windie's not even making it to the ODI World Cup was just shocking, U can't have a world cup without the Windie's being there. I thought as a test nation, so being top tiered would've meant straight into the world cup, but the same happened with South Africa that was struggling to make it to the world cup coz like the Windie's, South Africa not being there just wouldn't be right, it's just not cricket as the famous quote goes

Cricket in the west indies is so poor and sad. The younger generation do not even like cricket plus I do not blame them because to go and watch west indies play is like watching a team you know will lose against everyone and hurts my heart. I am part of the young generation who grew up with the older generation who love cricket but to hear my friends saying why are you watching cricket it is so boring hurts me.

I will blame for the franchise cricket for most the decline in Cricket. Cricketers are more focused on earning from franchise than playing for their national squad. The same players while playing franchise cricket give a very different approach while on the field. Most of these players use the national squad as a resume to get picked up in a franchise.
Also T20 cricket is more of just hitting big than doing a game with strategy. It might seem to be appealing to non cricketing world and earn more, but it has eroded the quality of cricket overall. Pitches are made batter friendly, and focus is on big hitting only. Running between wickets is like a bygone era.

One reason. I blame the ICC for the down turn of Westindies cricket. It starts with a lack of local support caused by the ICC not allowing spectators to bring in outside food or drink like they did prior. Bare in mind that this rule in most of the world is the norm, but in the Westindies the population is relatively poor and simply can't afford to buy anything at a game with beer and drinks set at tourist prices. Slowly this caused the population to lose intrest in the game as it was no longer a place to be free, but watching an international game became a feeling of "you better follow the rules" rather than the big party it use to be. Once you lose the domestic crowd the population starts watching other sports from a local bar.

Cool vid dude. Well edited and good analysis.
I think the main problem with not just the West Indies team but with cricket as a whole is the focus on franchise/ T20 cricket. Why care about International O.d.i. & test matches when the IPL is not only short form cricket but more lucrative? We have seen T20 leagues spring up everywhere and it's all about big hitting and less about tactical cricket. To me it's like watch the demolition derby, big crashes are cool but after seeing so many of them you become bored and it's no longer as exciting.

Short term I see pain, medium term they need someone like Justin Langer to coach them, inspire players to work for their spots and built a team of people who are hungry for success. He essentially built players like Andrew Tye, taking them off the club cricket scrap heap and turning them into world beaters.
In the long term investment in the pathways to professional cricket, community cricket.

In worldcup qualifying matches, they got depth in their batting as well till no.11. But they still couldn't quite make it through for various reasons such as their fielding efforts which were poor right throughout the tournament and also their application when it came to batting, felt they could've shown some respect to the opposition bowlers by constantly rotating the strike instead of trying to smack the ball out of the park all the time. Great analysis and looking forward to watch many more on this channel.

When I got your channel's prompt on YT during the WC, I saw the 1999 edition of Australian win you posted after they were defeated in the initial matches. It's hard to say. The friction between franchise cricket and the national team set up looks to be increasing, especially with the SAT20 tournament up and running. But it seems that grassroots development is still producing quality players - Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, Marco (and Duan) Jansen and Gerald Coetzee to name a few. The question is whether these players will choose the franchise path over representing the Proteas, then we'll get a better idea. Cheers for watching as always buddy and thanks for your support.

Money in cricket kinda killed Windies talents, every west indian kid wanted to play in Premier League or NBA growing up in 1990's and early 2000's, T20 has money to offer in last 15yrs but T20 is also killing long form game of cricket, most Batters want to hit 6ers in One Day and Test matches... Its good to see Windies beat India recently in T20 series but it will take windies long time to get back in all form of cricket, bowling and fielding needs ro improve if they want to win games...

they have been declining for years but to be honest, standards dropped after the 2015 World Cup. The only reason that they were present for WC 2019 was because of rain. Scotland deserved to qualify in 2019
