    Thanks for the video. Great and easy to follow. Just did my truck, took me an hour. Garage wanted to charge 2.2 hours labor. I'll save the shop cost for something i can't do. Getting the coil packs out was the hardest part. Keep up the awesome parts. Gapped the plugs between .028 and .030. They were the SP-580 and were pretty close to .030 out of the box. Seems to run a little better. Did it at 83,000 miles, next time i won't wait so long.

    That was great information and saved me a lot of money. My only issue was taking the coil connectors off. I found by the last plug that having a very small standard screw to proved a small gap made it much easier to pull them off. Thanks again for posting such a detailed video.

    Great instructional video, thank you so much. I paid about $450 last year for them to swap out #4 and an ignition coil only to continue to experience the same bucking when getting above 60mph. #4 was at .030" and the rest ranged from .038" to .045". I took a road trip and gave it some pretty aggressive hills and it never missed a beat.

    Thanks for this video Master Po! Young Grasshopper completed this a couple of days ago on my new (to me) 2013 XLT 4x4. Other than the coil pack bolts and connectors being on the lower side instead of the upper side, it went perfectly. With 53K on it the original plugs were a bear to get out and one was quite frozen in place. With a little penetrating oil, a breaker bar and some patience however victory finally came. The stuttering idle at cold start is completely gone. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but over the last couple of days, the fuel economy indicator shows my average mpg is up by about 1.5 mpg.

When I called the local dealer, they wanted it towed in and warned me it could be anything from a blown turbo to a cat. • @ChonkTek

      Ford tried to scare me with the cat thing too. They also said "the spark plugs POWER the turbo". They tried to scare me with the "if you do not change the plugs and your cat goes bad, the turbos will go out". They are saying a CEL wont warn ya... and that a CEL coming on means you likely already have damage. Seems like a very insensitive system... or an ignorant service guy. It was all the weirdest thing a service dept guy had ever said. I had to stop them and educate them, as I know how to install and tune turbos and how to work on everything.

    Great video and great information.
    I have a 2013 F150 with the 3.5L ecoboost and I had the same problem. My F150 had 55,000 miles on it when it began to misfire. When the misfire problem started, I checked all of the spark plugs, as recommended in your other ecoboost misfire video, and they were all within spec (.030 mm - .033 mm according to the owner's manual). When I visually inspected the spark plugs none of them had carbon tracks. I reinstalled the spark plugs, but I kept having the misfire problem. I took the F150 to the dealer and their diagnostic computer indicated a misfire on pistons #1 and #4. The dealer replaced the spark plugs and it has been running fine ever since.

    Just did a quick swap of the plugs at 103K miles. I did not bother with the boots as they still looked to be in fine shape. The engine was running a bit rough when cold. The new plugs cleared that right up. I am hoping to see a small bump in fuel economy but this will be hard to sort out given that we are heading into colder weather which tends to hurt fuel economy ( dense /dry winter air requires more fuel ). One quick tip is to use electrical tape on the universal joint on the ratchet set. Otherwise, you may have trouble getting the spark plug socket out of the spark plug well.

    Awesome video man. Engineers at work highly recommend not using any kind of anti seize. Since its such a light torque on these plugs. We have actually had them loosen up well on the dyno. Also adding Dielectric grease to the top of the plug will help with the coil boot coming off easier next time.

    • @deanb949
      @deanb949 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have never seen Anti-seize promote a fastener becoming loose on its own. It keeps the 2 surfaces from fusing together. Unless your engineers have a detailed explanation.. I will use it.

      I used the Motorcraft SP 534 and gapped on the small side: .0028 to .0030" as recommended. Many of the plugs I pulled at 60k were well wider than that (factory originals) with some around .0045" and up. I did not experience any misfires before the swap, but my idle did smooth out. At 73k now with no issues.

  • @twofst4u20
    @twofst4u20 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Thanks for this awesome info. I switched out the plugs last night and gapped at .028 and now the rpm’s seem to be running a little higher at idle, would this be caused by the shorter gap on the spark plugs? Also noticed that one of my coils cracked (not while removing) so I ordered a replacement. Truck runs amazing and I can definitely feel the difference. No more hesitation or shuddering at WOT. Also all the old plugs were at different gaps. Some were at .030 and one even was at 0.45! I think that anyone that’s experienced a shuddering or loss of power in their ecoboost should try this pm first.

    first time changing spark plugs ever, this video was perfect. highly recommend making the tool setup the same way. i was going to bootleg it and glad i just went and bought the joint and socket. do the grease and the anti-seize as well. I would also say, use electrical tape around the joint as shown to prevent damage. the rear cylinders are not hard but tricky to get the tool in there. I had to wrap tape around my entire socket tool assembly since as the first one i did, the spark plug socket stuck to the plug and came off and had to fish it out of the tube.
    also, get the good tool for gaping the plugs. i couldn't get mine precisely at .028, kept going too far so I settled on .030 haha. took care of the codes and misfires I developed this week changing plugs and clearing the codes with the livewire ts. again, great video. of all of my old plugs that came out, 4 were .042, 1 was .041 and 1 was .043 (this one in one of the cylinders with misfires).

    Good idea to put anti seize on the taper seat portion of the spark plug also.
    Some of the best anti-seize around is Jet-Lube SS-30 Copper High Temp Anti-Seize Lubricant.
    You will thank yourself on the next plug change!

      You don't want to use copper based anti-seize, use nickle based, nickle based has higher temperature tolerance, cooper will eventually became solid under high temp overtime.

      90% of ford techs are under the gun to complete the job as fast and as many as they can to collect there commission. They are often unexperienced and do not know the actuial science behind the components they are working on. They work for the dealership not you and mostly there reputation will not be damaged by there incompetency. Sad to say but often times true. Most good techs leave the dealerships to own there own shops because it doesn't take long to realize the customers are getting taken advantage of that's why the service writers are salesmen and plausible deniability is the rule.

    I enjoy your explanation on all F150 related topics. I’m a little late changing my plugs and they’re stuck. I can get only one out. Can you give me some advise about replacing the seized plugs. I have managed to remove the coils and clean the spark plug well out good. I sprayed some kroil penetrating oil in the well and put it back together until I have a better approach.

    I have a 2011 ecoboost. At 110k started having misfires brought it in and they said I had a bad coil, plug, and cat. Next day engine light came on again along with the misfires. They sad it was another plug so hadn’t them change all the plugs. Fixed the problem. Now 160k and same problems. Bought and code scanner and said 4 and 6 misfiring. Bought new plugs and coils plugs were gapped at 3000 old ones were 4100. Change was easy thanks to your videos. No more misfires, but idle was rough at first and now my gas mileage went from 18 to 14. After all that my question is do I need to clear the pcm or should I look into cleaning the mass air sensor or throttle body. Sorry for this being so long

    I recently had some significant work done to my engine and I asked them to look into a cylinder misfire. Felt like a single plug was bad. Typically I've been asking the dealer to only replace the offending plug figuring the rest would be replaced at some point by timed obsolescence. Anyways, he ended up replaced all 6. When I left the truck had a major misfire that would result in cylinder shut down. Error code was P0313, lean condition due to low fuel. Well, before we did a fuel pump I asked them to throw another hour of diagnostics at it. Well, in that time, they noticed the misfire was jumping between cylinders. Turns out the brand new plugs were carbon arced! Don't know why a misfire would throw that engine code, but it does explain why the truck would blow black smoke when it would lay down. Well under TSB 14-0160 he replaced all 6 plug wires and installed 6 new plugs. Truck now runs better than ever! If your truck was built before 6-15-13 it might be worthwhile looking into.

    so does the 2013 model get the new sparks already? with the new plugs do I need to regap as well or if it came with 0.028" gap? mine doesn't have any issue unless you accelerate fast like passing vehicles on highways. some times it just suddenly lost power, I thought it was the transmission slips but dealer didn't find the reason. and that was an issue ever since it's new. Id like to hear your opinion on this issue. thanks

    Matco tools offers a set of magnetic spark plug sockets with built in swivels and different length extensions. We work on Cummins CNG engines and Cummins recommend magnetic due to the rubber style can hold oil and cause misfires. Not sure if the other tool company's offer similar sets. The Matco set wasn't over $40.00 if I remember.
