The end of this video reminded me of the lyrics of “Once in a Lifetime” by Talking Heads.
:And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, "Well, how did I get here?"

    6:00 Spot on.
Right from the start of the 79 build, I had a feeling that you were "experimenting" with what level of comfort and equipment you could achieve, and what you require.
For successfully completing overland trips with a high level of luxury, it's probably one of the best vehicles on the planet.
If that's "failure", I'll take it every time.
If you failed at anything, it was probably failing to make it sufficiently clear that each vehicle you build is a project with a specific goal, which IS likely to be replaced by another vehicle when you set yourself new goals.
That's something I've always understood from your video's but it seems like some people think each build is "for life".

Range Rover to do list. Better air-con, upgrade the stereo to a 2022 standard , new suspension to get it a bit smoother and then you have a great and maybe the coolest daily driver. And of course fix all the small issues like the petrol smell in the cab etc. Thanks for an awesome upload as usual.

Falling for this one, as distinct from your nostalgia for your first one, speaks to how good Range Rover Classics are. I quite agree with you about the looks, they're stunning.
Your point about failure is one many people would benefit from learning. You often gain more from failure (knowledge and perspective) than from unfettered success.

An interesting observation is that very few people regret on their deathbed that they "didn't spend more time in the office". I certainly won't be one of those.
Failures? I don't understand why this is even a topic in regards to the "ultimate tourer". It wouldn't be my choice of vehicle and maybe Andrew was disappointed with the outcome but someone will be very happy with it right now. It's a magnificent vehicle for someone.
Gloating over other people's failures? Of course one wouldn't wish to gloat over anyone's genuine failures because we have all been there, done that, got the Tee shirt. However there are some people who are so arrogant, know-it-all, I-know-best etc (e.g. the JLR Chief Designer) that one has to smirk a bit when they get it wrong. That's a natural human reaction (or do I have a nasty streak not shared by others?)

I commute 40min (55km) each way to work at off-peak times (midnight) - for work driving all night/morning - to commute home again late morning. Good thing I love driving so it’s not a chore in the least. What I really want to do is get into more off-roading and touring - work kinda gets in the way of that but have to pay bills somehow.

From what I recall? Rover bought that aluminium V8 design from GM back in the 60's. It was a Buick motor.
Originally a 3.5 litre. What the Land Rover guys call a Stage 1.
Land Rover bored it out to 3.9 then up 4.6 over the years.
Some private engineering works managed to get it up 5 litre and even beyond I believe?

Andrew, a few have criticised the audio quality because of the intrusion of the engine and road noise. I found no difficulty whatsoever in hearing what you had to say (and I’m a 67 year old silly old fart), so I don’t understand the criticism. I enjoy these background sounds and hope you don’t try to limit them too much in future productions.
I get that some purists prefer the aural equivalent of a coin balanced on the radiator of a Rolls with engine running, and while it might present interesting challenges to content producers to ‘purify’ their sound quality (with feel good rewards when successful), among the reasons why I watch your vids is the enjoyment of the whole experience, including all the aural, visual, informational and philosophical aspects.
Please don’t kill the background noise.

    • @4xoverland

Thank you Andrew for your honest opinions, and sharing your feelings without shortcuts, I thinks this is one of the most important values of the channel. About the GPS video that you mention, that you think is too out-dated to share, I think could be very educative, because there´s a lot of old GPSs out there, and they still are usable and capable instruments, especially if they are approached as a navigation assessment tool for maps (and I think you agree with that). Today many people rely too much on sophisticated GPSs, and discard maps (I think you made a video on that subject), so a video in which it can be seen the evolution of the GPS, and the possible use of the existing old equipment (even as a back-up) can be very useful for many people. Thank you very much! Regards!

I know that feeling about the new ol' truck. It's never quite the same as the first one. Now with another similar old truck I was ambivalent as I drove it home and for months after as I fought with teething problems. But after 3 years of almost all my own work I don't think I can part with it or at least an equivalent to replace it. It's just a quiet joy, more like the reality than the memory of first time round.

    Dear Andrew.
I was distracted by the sound on this video, pulled away from the interesting narrative, by forgotten memories stirred by the ‘gear whine’ varying with speed.
My memories came back of the A303 dual carriageway, forty plus years ago, driven regularly in my 4 door early auto ‘company RR’. That sound is unique in my experience and I think was the transfer box whine? Lovely….

Sadist is the word for seeing pleasure in others failure. Off track a little, I wouldn't worry what naysayers think as there's too many out there who have a stubborn mindset and need to mature if ever. Love the story telling with pictures. You have a rich life because of the experiences. Can't wait to see the flying episodes. There's not a lot of aerial views of WA's south west. An aircraft would be different to a drone. I totally agree, driving to work is an anxiety issue for me. Being amongst many other motorists makes me crook. So I don't.
    Thank you Andrew.

Have been enjoying your overland advise, just plan out exciting to me in watching. Yes I agree, one can not learn to grow unless they learn about failures. Failures are all a big part of life, like you said if you don't fail sometimes then you are not doing anything. Its ok to fail. This video is a bit of inspirational, I drive trucks for a living, my own business, and I have had many failures. its 23 years now we are still here. One day just maybe I will come to your beautiful country of Australia. Jack Marshall Raleigh North Carolina

At 46 I am working 2.6 miles away from my house. I get frustrated when for whatever reason my commute is more than 10 minutes. I couldn't cope with a proper commute anymore.

How do you feel driving with 4 x 20kg projectiles lined up unsecured in the trunk? Bit surprising for a person who is so safety concerned otherwise.

Thanks for the story Andrew...put into context and timeline, and good LIFE lessons, some of the same ones we LIVE by. Makes ALL the difference when looking back, a life LIVED!
Speaking from the heart, I believe, is what people want (NEED!) to hear, I liked this instalment.
I'm also an aviator...when shall we be hearing a little more about this other passion of yours, and your plans Down Under, perhaps? You mentioned "towing a plane" once??
Heading to Kalahari next month in the 105, will pass regards :)

Hi Andrew. Very thought provoking video. I've been with the same financial institution for 30 years +. I can literally feel over the web how our lives and experiences are worlds apart. I love how you have been bringing bits of your and Gwynn's lives and adventures into recent videos. Might this be you filming your biographies? Or is that viographies?

The "commute" brought back some memories...of commuting, at least outside of rush-hour traffic times, into Sandton and back home in my early career. After 6 months of that, it was "bugger that" and into the bush I walked. Best decision I have ever made, hands-down. Well played to you.

How much have you stressed or worried over income and being able to make ends meet? As you said it’s not always been plane sailing. What has been your philosophy in this respect other than “We w I’m ll not commute “, I used to get a lot of reading in while commute…. Lol
