    I have an anarok from Fjallraven. For such a light weight item it is warm and water resistant and can also be worn underneath a vest, but I think that when it gets cold here in the Winter in Canada than it is time for the Canada Goose parka (in camo). Fjallraven's light snow pants compared to the ecoshell pants? That is the question. Canada Goose tundra pants are very heavy and fairly hard to put on or take off.

    • @TedWeirum
      @TedWeirum  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the anorak is great, I haven’t gotten the chance to compare the snow pants with the ecoshell pants yet, hopefully someday!

      @@TedWeirum I bought something called keb touring pants and they were a light snow pants that are easy to wear ontop of a regular pants. Only grievance is that they didn't have belt loops, they have a velcrow strap but maybe the suspenders would work with them. Anyway keb touring pants on TH-cam and the main Canadian Fjallraven site show a different product, which looks more like regular keb pants. It is a mystery...

      @@TedWeirum The keb ecoshell pants fit directly over top of the regular keb trousers. If you go with treck tights instead of trousers underneath than the shell pants will be too long/bunched up (you can tighten them at the ankle too). They are impressive. Otherwise if not the ecoshell than choose a goose feather it looks like. Ecoshell is warm after your body heats up but not prior to.

    Hi, Ted!
    I own the first iteration of their eco-shell (the one with single breast pocket, two hand pockets and no pit zips) and it keeps me dry in wet weather, however the fabric soaks up the rain/snow instead of letting it roll off. I was wondering if the bergtagen has this same issue?
    I have had problems in the past with my jacket freezing overnight because it is completely soaked, not to mention a wet jacket will cool you down significantly. Not something that is advisable when you're in the mountains.
    Also you showed the hood is very adjustable, but how big is it, would a helmet easily fit underneath while still being covered with the hood?
    Thank you.

    • @TedWeirum
      @TedWeirum  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment! It will fit a helmet! I didn’t experience that the rain rolled of, but I managed to keep dry and warm. I’ll have a decent test on it next week when I’m going up in the mountains, I might be able to tell you more about it after that adventure! Thanks for watching!

    HI there!
    I saw the jacket and I felt in Love - considering that I might have an expedition in Patagonia during Fall (Max 50° F (10° C) Min 38° F (3° C) Precip: 5.8 in) - would you suggest this jacket as a good fit for those temperatures and precipitations? if not, what would you recommend?

    If you compare eco-shell with the market leader, goretex, event, neoshell, pertex shield, h20, sympatex, don't you jinks that's all perform in the field in the same way, that is they breath when you are dry and low activities and you get sweat as soon as you level of motion increase? At least this is my experience. I,be tried all the above mentioned fabrics from arcterix, berghaus, Lowe alpine, Rab, atagonia, Fjallraven (my favorite so far).

    • @TedWeirum
      @TedWeirum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that the performance is around the same level for most of the brands you mentioned, however when it comes to fjällräven they’re hard to beat when it comes to the environmental impact and the work they do around that, that’s why I really like this brand!

    • @francescocavaliere9585
      @francescocavaliere9585 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TedWeirum I love Fjallraven too, even if I Italy is not so popular. Love their environment program as well. With Patagonia are my favorite brands. What I believe stood out thought is the Bushcraft style the design the cut and detail care of any garments, which, by the way, you describe perfectly in your reviews.

    Hey Ted, I really like your gear reviews as I own, and love a lot of the same items that you’ve shown in the past. Very good job on your videos as well.
    I couldn’t help but noticing that even in your video the material of the jacket already got soaked with water, especially on your shoulders. I’m sure it didn’t get through as the 3-layer shell material is great, but the fluorocarbon-free DWR that Fjällräven is using does not do a great job from my experience. I had this problem with my Keb Eco-Shell, had it swapped with a new set of Jacket and Trousers twice, so I’m now on the 3rd set. Around two years ago I planned a 4 day trip in the Alps, knowing that it would rain a lot so I did some research for a solution and quckly found out that it’s still pretty commonly known amongst mountaineers, that unfortunately the perfomance of PVC-free impregnation is no match to the old, less environment friendly DWR, which is why some companies haven’t switched yet. I treated my Keb with such a product and now it works as exepected, but breathes as bad as the competition. It repells even after hours in the rain.
    I hope the environment friendly products get better soon but for now I thought people should know that this jacket does not hold up in extreme conditions. I have an Arcteryx Beta AR for example and the waterproof performance is a lot better. I live in the Pacific-Northwest and it rains a ton in the outdoors, plus cold temperatures, plus wind.
    The problem with the water breaking into the material is that in hot conditions the fabric can’t breath anymore. In cold conditions it means that a wet fabric cools your body even more. Both not acceptable even if the water doesn’t find its way into the jacket.
    I’d be curious to hear more about your experience in proper rain conditions with those two jackets. Maybe in the comparison video you mentioned in the comments?

    • @TedWeirum
      @TedWeirum  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! thanks for your comment! I don't know if you've seen my video on the keb jacket, there you can see some places that ive been with it. how are the new products that you got holding up?
      From my experience the Keb Eco shell jacket has been great, ive taken it on numerous adventures and it never let me down, if you get a chance watch the Solo hiking in Padjelanta video, it rains a lot when im coming back to camp in the night, when I got back the jacket kept my upper body dried. ill see if I can mention a bit more about it in the next video! again, thanks for your comment, see you in the next video!

    • @ovivan79
      @ovivan79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ted Weirum thank you for replying. I watched your solo hiking video again and your shoulders and arms again look like the water broke into the fabric. This is what my sets looked like as well just with a lot heavier raining until the water even got inside. It’s not supposed to be like that. The fabric is supposed to repell the water so the material can breathe and your body doesn’t loose too much energy. My latest pair of Keb Eco-Shell jacket and Keb Eco-Shell trousers I’ve re-applied the DWR with a carbon-based DWR and now it works as expected. I really like this jacket for its feel and freedom of movement. Just in terms of performance my Gore Tex jackets are far superior when the weather gets really bad. Why I even mentioned this in your videos is that I could barely find anyone using the Eco-Shell in proper bad conditions while ascending a mountain or climb etc and you actually put your gear to use so I felt sharing my experience with you. I look forward to your comparison review. :)
      Happy trailing buddy.

    • @TedWeirum
      @TedWeirum  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much! I’m going up against a bit colder weather in the next adventure but there might also be a risk of rain so it could be interesting to see how the jacket holds ups. I haven’t thought about the jacket soaking up water like you mentioned, but I’ll be thinking about it now and focus on how it impacts me, I’ll share my thoughts with you when I get back!

    • @TedWeirum
      @TedWeirum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, still haven’t gotten the chance to compare this jacket with the Arcteryx model, I don’t know if you’ve seen it but i used Fjallravens own dwr and I think it did improve the water resistance of my jacket, however I will say that this jacket has been with me for 5 years now and it wouldn’t be fair to say that it is like when I bought it. This is a fairly new material, I don’t know the life expectancy of it but it still works for me, but again not the same as it used to. I also hope that the environmental products will improve, we’ll see what happens! Thanks for getting back to me on this one!

    Can this be worn year round, as with the Keb Eco Shell? I tried the Keb Eco Shell and it felt thinner than I would've wanted for mountain trekking. I get that it is a shell layer, but it didn't feel particularly durable. Is the Bergtagen a heartier, more sturdy version of a Shell, essentially the same thing as the Keb only stronger? I'm worried it might be too heavy to bring as a rain jacket in the summer.

      Hey Vincent! If you choose “your” size there’s room for layers, should you want to have a thicker down jacket underneath you’d need to size up, nothing I’d recommend unless you’re constantly going in that setup otherwise the jacket would be too big for “normal” use. If it’s really really cold it’s better to get as many thin layers underneath the jacket and then a good thick down jacket outside of the shell. Best of luck brother!

    hi, Ted, i am looking for a hard shell but not very keen on getting a typical crinckly noisy shell like the mountain equipment lhotse or the arcteryx beta ar. Stumbled upon eco shell and the further research got me here once gain to your channel.
    can i request you for some long term review in terms of
    1.waterproofness now, 2. how long can it stay in torrential rain, 3. drying time, 4. frequency of dwr reapplication, 5. do we have to use only flallraven dwr treatment or nikwax/grangers can be used as well, 6. what is your chest size and what size are you wearing 7. what kind of layering can be done under it.
    thank you and best regards :-) rohit

      Hey!
      1, it’s still good! 2, I’ve had it out for at least 3 hours without a problem. 3, well that depends of course but it’s fast! 4. The best is to do it 2 times a year, I don’t do it that often but it’s still good! 5 you can use others but it’s recommended to use Fjällrävens. 6 don’t know my chest size, i have a size M in the jacket

    Bought an eco shell jacket last year. Cost about $600. It was not fully waterproof in the first heavy rain that I walked in. A year later and having warn it about 20 times in heavy rain and now it is not close to being waterproof, with rain coming through the top of the shoulders on both sides and soaking under garments. I have used wash in re water proofing and this has not solved it. I have ordered spray on re water proofing but honestly do not expect this to make this jacket fully waterproof for hours in heavy rain. Sorry but the eco-shell jackets simply do not perform to the price or makers specifications in my experience. I would not buy another.
