Carmageddon was never an arcade game. It was a PC game, and it was awesome. It isn't a racing game, it's a demolition derby/vehicular manslaughter game with the option of treating it like a race if you really want to. I have never played the N64 port, but from what I have heard, everyone that has complained about it was playing it as a racing title, not the carnage-fest the PC original was. While I imagine the N64 port is actually terrible, I recommend that you try the PC game. The controls may still a bit wonky, but it is a lot of fun to play.
Spider-Car lyrics (bit begins @ 10:03): Spider-Car, Spider-Car Handles better stuck in tar Watch it flip on its side How the hell have I not died? Watch out! Here comes the Spider-Car! Hit a wall, climb that shit Zombies a pain in the ass to hit Off the ramp, watch it fly! Laws of physics don't apply Look out! In the sky, it's the Spider-Car! Spider-Car, Spider-Car Love of God, don't drive Spider-Car Making turns like I'm drunk T-Boned by some AI punk This game, you will not make it far Before you meet a bar 'Cause you drove Spider-Car!
About the respawn and repair mechanics: I believe those are actually normal mechanics in Carmageddon. Granted, my only experience with the series is with Max Damage (which is the newest game in the series), but it's also got the respawn and repair features.
Since no one has done this, 10:03 for the Spider Car bit. EDIT [July 13th, '18]: HOLY CRAP MY COMMENT GOT PINNED BY DA DARK LORD! This might be one of the best days of my life.
The Spider-Car song had me laughing so much. This game strikes a bell...I am thinking we bought it and my dad was so mad he forced the store to give my sister and I's money back.
Carmageddon 64 is technically a port of Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse now, if you couldn't already tell by the inclusion of the Eagle 3, Beaver City, and other things. Pretty much all the console ports were ports of Carmageddon 2 but for some reason were named after the first game.
If the turning is that sensitive, then I can only imagine trying to play this with my own N64 controller (which has a Gamecube-like stick installed, and it's a bit more sensitive than the regular stick).
The game is actually a port of Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now. The game was originally developed by Stainless Studios and the port was developed by Software Creations (the developer of Spider-Man & Venom: Maximum Carnage).
I have never heard of this version of carmageddon, but the first 2 Carma games and the newest carmageddon: max damage are amazing titles to pick up on PC.
Considering you rip apart Titus's games like the Angry Video Game Nerd chews through LJN games, maybe you could tackle the game that finally killed Titus... RoboCop on Xbox.
I bought this game, full price when it came out. I foolishly believed it would be a simple port of the PC game which I had had fun with previously. I started this "game" and my heart broke.
Unfortunate, really. At least the recent release (re-release with a lot of added stuff, really) of Carmageddon: Max Damage worked out fine. Try that out, you might have fun with it.
I remember seeing this game on a list done by a user I watch quite a bit. The list was The Top 20 Worst Games of All Time, obviously from the point of view of the list's creator. This game beat out Sonic 06, Parasite Eve 3 (essentially the "Metroid Other M" of the Parasite Eve series), Superman 64, Friday the 13th, and another game done by Stellar Stone (same people who made Big Rigs), and was placed in the single-digit section of the list. He also gives out ratings for games that he reviews. Carmageddon 64 got a Bullshit rating, but you make it sounds like it deserves a Rest In Piss (pretty much the rating that a game does NOT want to get).
the city level background looks like pre 2001 New York city! talk about lame, you can see the twin towers easily. also, love your signing, always makes me laugh.
Mazrim Taim Oh no; then they would've had to make an actual racing game instead of this completely unfocused puddle of shit with two additional objectives the game doesn't even seem to expect you to go after since there's way too many zombies to hunt and there are no weapons to actually kill racers with!
Darklordjadow1 Carmageddon on the PC is functional with an huge fanbase. Taking the ability to enjoy the sand box away would have destroyed the franchise. Do your research.
Darklordjadow1 Yes but they can't change the game mode can they? Otherwise it's a different game. Just because it's a console port doesn't mean they have to change the system. You should be getting angry at the bad design, not the fact that the opponent AI can't win. If they could win then you wouldn't stand a chance of actually doing what you are supposed to be able to do in the game. Your reasoning is flawed sir.
Mazrim Taim Exactly! I'm mad that the design is so bad they had to rig it so the AI can't win. It's an example of how screwed up the game is; that rather than fix the shitty game they essentially programmed in a half dozen exploits to make the game something resembling playability
14:07 I think the reason you failed that mission is because your car also got totaled in that exchange. Pretty much you had a tie which doesn't count as a win.
Shaqazooloo0 I don't think that's it, considering I didn't die for several seconds after it said "all opponents wasted." And also the fact my car only got totaled because the game bugged out and sent me flying across the stage with a force the Hulk would be jealous of.
Hey there is a game on steam for sale it looks really bad it's called chrome. The sale is you get the 1st and 2nd one for 1.99 yes that's right two dollars for two games see what I mean.
Hey I think I know what the credits are for. You stated it was a port of an arcade game so if you put lets say a dollar you get 10,000 credits and you used them for repairing you car.
It's unfortunate that the console Carmageddon games are so terrible, because the PC games are actually pretty good. Have you ever played the PC games? I think the biggest mistake they made with this version is making it so that hitting pedestrians (err, zombies but whatever) makes you take damage. That right there ruins one of the main elements of the game. You're supposed to be able to gleefully mow down hapless pedestrians and fill up your timer so that you can explore the map and battle with the other racers. Another thing they got wrong with this version are the physics; half the fun of Carma, I find comes from going off jumps, flying through the air, driving on rooftops, and other such crazy shenanigans. It may look like a racing game, but it's really supposed to be more of a violent physics sandbox.
+mrbigmouth502 I have never played any of the other Carmageddon games. On the list of problems this game has, taking damage from the zombies is really low on the list for me. The confusing maps, frustrating objectives, lack of time, and God-Awful controls are what ruin it for me. This version of Carmageddon is fundamentally poorly designed on every level.
Admittedly, Carmageddon 2 on the PC has some frustrating missions, but the non-mission scenarios where you just have to destroy the other racers are really fun. And yeah, you don't start off with a lot of time at first, but you get a lot more once you start running pedestrians over, and you DON'T take damage from it so getting extra time isn't an ordeal. The maps can be quite sprawling and intricate, but there's a mini map that can help. As far as the controls go, Carmageddon games, at least the ones I've played, have always been kinda strange in that regard. Carma 2 controls a lot better than the first one though, I will say that.
LMAO!! This was probably your best review yet. I missed out on this shitfest, but it amazes me how many shit games were actually on the N64. I know back then, you could rent a game for five days and if you didn't like it, all you missed out on was $5, though you were kinda stuck with a shit game for 5 days. It boiled down to games that were shit back then didn't really steal money, but they made a huge impact. It seems like some of LJN's employees defected to Titus and created this crap and Superman 64. And AY MADON!! That story! The story on this game is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. It looks like someone made a last ditch effort to create some semblance of a story in a short amount of time. Like they had a Sunday afternoon to submit a story and a reason why you're running over stupid ass pedestrians on this game. By the way, I loved your rap. You should do that on more reviews. This game is really, really reminiscent of Superman 64.
Well I think that part of the N64's problem is that it's when games were jumping from 2-D to 3-D and a lot of games missed the mark. What can I say; the mood struck me. But yeah; it astounds me how similar this game is to Superman 64; it's even by the same publisher and came out 6 months afterward.
***** The rap was funny as hell. I also loved the REAL storyline behind this game. I bet parents did throw a bitch fit around that time. Around that time, parents had actually won the "violent video game" war until GTA III came out two years later. So it's six months later, so I assume this game was made in...November of 1999? Anyway, it seems like this was the inspiration for Big Rigs.
Wow lets put a brutally violent racing game on a console that was seen as a kid's console, hand it to one of the worst companies of all time and change the people to zombies. That is the ultimate recipe for failure.
If anything the developer totally missed the point of the series; there is effectively no way to win a level except winning the race in a shitty time limit.

But right now, I just want

Making turns like I'm drunk
T-Boned by some AI punk

The "He won't find some AI fun" is actually "T-boned by some AI punk", I believe.
that is hilarious
"I'm stuck and I've been driving for 20 seconds!" Sounds like my driving test.
I want a 10-hour loop of the "Spider-Car" theme.

My favorite part was the spider car song.
Show of hands, who loves the "Spider-Car" song?
5:08 Snuffleupagus noooooo!!!
I was thinking about reviewing this game and explaining why it's illogical for the car to get hung up on the wooden fence.
Did you try to use the ramps as ramps?
I remember at one point I tried to use a ramp as a ramp, I grazed an object in midair, and my car literally did several somersaults through the air.
Why don't you take that Spider Car bit and post it as a separate video? =)
I'd strive for some better sound, but I guess I could give it a shot.
Darklordjadow1 hehe
2 years, and still we don't have a ten hour spider car. Plz
