Something I've often wondered is, did Zelse put the Wind Jade in his staff? It has a green crystal on the end of it, though that sort of thing seems normal in this world, since Leonardo has a red gem on his staff, and these seem to be similar to the type of gems that Brain and the other spirit tamers ware on their front. If Zelse IS putting the Wind Jade on the end of his staff, it'd be a good way to hide it in plain sight since most people wouldn't even think to look twice at a mage's staff like that.
Perhaps it is mentioned in a later part, but it seems that the Japanese version of the game added some more lore here and there. They spruced up the scenario with Zelse, at least. In that version, Tilly is his sister and they (and the rest of the vagabonds) were refugees from Greenoch, when Zelse finds the Wind Jade he thinks he now has the power to exact revenge upon King Beigis for what was done to his home. If they were just given more time... you see glimpses of the potential at every turn.
Dude, you're probably the only person on the internet I have seen with such a grounded and positive take on Quest 64, I was born in 91 so I was a little young the play the classic SNES RPGs because frankly I couldn't read game text well enough until like 1996-97 so I only got to expirence Zelda a link to the past and the first few minutes of final fantasy 6 before switching over to the N64 as a child, Quest 64 was probably my first RPG I beat on my own alongside the original Pokemon game and it holds a place in my heart for sure. My younger brother watched me play through the whole game and we got stuck many times...the water elemental boss on the island...the ice cave...the evil king boss in Highland...man I hate that ice cave.... I think the way that the narrative of the whole story being spliced into all the NPC's rewards the players that truly want to find out what happened to Lord bartholomy rather than a player that simply wants to progress the game into the next phase, and I think a lot of contemporary reviewers that didn't play the game as a child are in the latter, I could make this comment into the size of a book if I wanted to detail all sorts of things I enjoyed and struggled with but I'm running out of time right now. I just wanted to say thank you for your hard work on these Quest videos, I subbed and put on notifications.

Even multiple playthroughs never gave me this insight to the story. Great job and good theories. Maybe if they had more time they could have showed more desperation in the characters that sought the gems. And the way your explanation flows in order is like the adventurous feeling I get when I play the game, always discovering new things surrounding the game’s central quest.

I actually haven’t played this game but judging from only light internet research and seeing some reviews, Quest 64 seems like my cup of tea. I am convinced that the bearer of the elemental gems corrupts the owner, just like The Lord of The Rings idea. Brian was not affected because he was a "Spirit Tamer" a guy who "tame" the elemental spirit or something about his hidden and unfinished lore, something with his ancestry or the "chosen one of the spirits" idea. This idea (Brian as chosen one) was explored in the Quest 64 secuel who never came to light. That idea explain thats why a 12 years old lad saves Celtland from the Eltale reopening And thats why many characters who touch the elemental gems and the Eltale Book always reacts with anger and evil emotions, the reactions like Solvaring, Zelse and every other boss in the game is always almost crazy, like Gollum with the ring, this make sense when you remember Lavaar dialogue in Shamwood "I once held the Eltale Book. But when I opened it to unleash its incredible powers, I was not worthy. The only powers I could control were those of famine and destruction. I could hate, but not love, I could terrify, but not inspire." Thats my opinion and theory about that, but that feeling that game was polished quickly without mayor details. I impatiently waiting for the second part of this awesome work about this game, thanks so much for this

The covid lockdowns made me homebrew my Wii and WiiU. Quest was the 1st playthrough I did. I never bothered to find all the dialogue to piece the story together. It was a staple childhood game, and I never knew how much hate this game got until I saw your videos. The one thing I picked up was the Cull Hazard and Glencoe Forest secondary exit/entrances. It never occurred to me that the game was just undeveloped. I always thought there was a purpose and I just had to find it.

Have you ever gotten around to playing the GBC game? It seems to give a bunch of additional context and some new events. Solvaring, for example, leads a group of bandits, was banished from Dondoran, and abducts Flora to be his bride.
I have, there are inconsistent parallels that run between the GBC version and the N64 version so I prefer to view them as separate entities and, in my opinion anyway, the GBC version doesn't open itself up to as much of a creative narrative than the other. Initially I considered pulling information from the handheld title to supplement the story section of this series, but decided against it because once I started I realized that the differences were too great and that it wouldn't be possible to combine the two. In my view it's better to view them side by side instead of together for that reason, more like a "what if" instead of a "what should have been." I also have some minor grievances with the English translation not coming from Konami or THQ, but by Sunsoft. But this is just my opinion and if your takeaway from the handheld title is that it's what the Quest 64 story should have been, then I totally understand and respect that!!!
Good points. I think the GBC version might've fully realized some parts, but then like you've said there's a lot of new or contradictory events too. Information like NPC's saying they're married in one game I'm guessing fits into the other easily, though. Sort of related: I'm still playing Brian's Journey so maybe this will be similar to how it's handled, but I think Limelin had a Dondoran backtrack requirement. Queen Deanne mentions a letter from Flora, and after beating Nepty the Donodran library's secret entrance opens. My rough guess is that originally Fargo would be jailed, Shriker would be in the isolated house, and the Queen would still have the Fire Orb but because of Limelin's aristocratic nature you can't see her without royal validation. You go back to Dondoran to get this, and while that happens Beigis breaks Fargo out; Fargo then steals the orb and kills Shriker while destroying his home. Nice videos by the way!

Your analysis is almost identical to what mine was for the N64 version, I had assumed Lord Shriker had the Fire Ruby and Fargo's act of murder was two fold, taking the ruby and his vengeance for his imprisonment. I remember playing this game before I was even 10 years old. Turn-based RPGs at the time were way too complicated for me, so I put it down after a few times.
I was so young when I played it I didn't even really understand the concept of an RPG either, but I think the unknown made it that much more interesting to me.
But yeah also this is one of those games I tried to ask my friends about because I couldn't remember it, and everyone kept saying it was dragon quest even though I knew it was not. I had the same issue with trying to remember Star Wars: Rebel Assault when everyone kept telling me I was thinking of rogue squadron.

For Quest 64, I did play it when I was younger and loved it back then, and just recently completed a "Fire/Wind First" play-through when I acquired a 64 cartridge off FB Marketplace. After beating it, I was looking to videos on YT and didn't realize how much hate there was online for it, terrible. It's so refreshing to see a positive and in-depth look at this game when most people just trash it outright and claim it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It's a shame it's been ruined for an entire generation by ProJared's misleading video filled with lies.
i wish this game could get a remake, bring in all the old features they gutted during dev time and turn quest 64 into a much grander game. I know it's meh, but i did enjoy it despite being simple and grind happy.

For Quest 64, I did play it when I was younger and loved it back then, and just recently completed a "Fire/Wind First" play-through when I acquired a 64 cartridge off FB Marketplace. After beating it, I was looking to videos on YT and didn't realize how much hate there was online for it, terrible. However, I found your channel and your passion for this game really shows in your explanations and expositions and dialogues, it really means a lot that you've taken so much time to do these videos, amazing content I wish I could give you a million likes lol. The story is kinda non-linear since you need to talk to every random npcs
It's so refreshing to see a positive and in-depth look at this game when most people just trash it outright and claim it has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It's a shame it's been ruined for an entire generation by ProJared's misleading video filled with lies.

@@tjhedgescout3052 In my opinion with how few people are interested in Quest and the fact that Imagineer and THQ Nordic don't even acknowledge its existence, I think it would be safe to make a pretty accurate clone provided someone out there with the know-how wanted to.
