  • Day two of our Traws Eryri adventure.
The first night camping was very wet and windy but actually I was quite cosy in my tent. The shame was that we didn’t get to enjoy the evening outside, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.
It was certainly a brighter start to the day as we left our campsite in the woods. Our fist stop was going to be Coed y Brenin trail centre then we would head for Llyn Trawsfynydd and the decommissioned nuclear power station. I’d stayed in this area before so some of the trails would be familiar.
After that we’d enter the slate quarries at Ffestiniog and Cwm Penmachno. Our day would end somewhere in the forest above Penmachno.
All in all it was a nicer day and it felt like the worst of the weather was behind us. I hope you enjoy the video. 😁

Nice video! It looks a really epic route and pretty hard work! No Pain, no gain!

Another excellent video. “Grim”-not a word we use in the USA unless with “Reaper” at Halloween….. but one I will start using when I bonk. Thanks for posting.

love it, the quarry section looks fantastic. Next month we're doing it over two days. Cheers

Thanks! We took a few deviations to the official route as we had 2 GPX files which were slightly different. Ended up doing a lot more climbing than the official route!! The quarry section is not on the official route, there’s a road section instead. Looking at the map now the section we descended is actually a footpath so can see why they haven’t included it in the official route. If you want the GPX file then let me know. 😁

@@david-pascoe thanks pal I could see the deviations from the two videos. The first bit out of corris too over the mountain but it looks quite nice along the lake too albeit with a bit more road. I’ve asked about the mine section and they’re trying to make it official since it used to be a road all the way through and is used heavily by locals riding to penmachno. The official road section doesn’t look nice at all, so exposed to the traffic but they’ve no choice until the other way is signed off. I reckon when we do it it’ll be wet too but my two compadres decided not to camp so it’s the Cross Foxes for us near the nuclear power station. Cheers and waiting for part 3 ;)

Loving these videos. Looks a great ride!
Did you take a different route in places to the official one? Their official map / GPX seems to suggest mainly road through the quarry areas? Thanks!

Hey Ian. Yes we did deviate a bit. We had 2 GPX files that were slightly different and just added the interesting bits on to our route. Ended up doing a significant amount of extra climbing and about 18 miles more in distance. I think the quarry section was actually one of the most interesting bits so glad we did it that way. If you want our GPX file I’d be happy to send it. 😁

Hey David. It was a bit of a mix to be honest. I’m on a Santa Cruz Tallboy 29er full suss. Ash is on a 27.5 Stanton Slackline hard tail and Rich is on a Surly 29er of some kind. Tyres on my bike were Maxxiss Rekon up front and Vittoria Syerra on the back. Would probably have a slightly chunkier tyre on the back if I did it again. Hope that helps. 😁

Hey David. You know I'm potentially riding this weekend. Just out of interest. You did it 3 days. I know you slept in tents the 2 nights. How far did you ride each day

Hey Ricky. Just had a look and we did 41,41 and 52 on the final day. Ash had some issues with his rear tyre so we probably would have done a few more miles on the first day.
Hope you find some good camp spots, we ended up in the woods both nights which wasn’t ideal. But it had got dark and we didn’t have a lot of choice.
Anyway, have a great time and hope the weather is kind to you. Look forward to seeing your photos on FB. 🤞😎

Hi David, great video. I plan to do this at the end of May and wondering how many hours it took you to ride from doglgellau to betws-y-coed? Trying to workout whether to do it in 3 or 4 days!
