I wished this worked for me. Watched it 4 times, connected all the nodes, 2 issues, so it never works completely. First is, if I have both math nodes set to subtract, I get nothing but black. If the bottom one is add, I can see the texture. Beyond those, everything else works as it should, until you say to plug it into the transparent node. When I do, it goes back to having no texture at all. If I put it in the glass node, color, it shows the pattern, but you can never get the black out, so it never changes the water to be clear with caustics. Not sure where I am going wrong, but I am using the latest blender version....but really enjoyed your video and approach to this tutorial. Thanks.

Great tutorial, but I had the same problem like some of you guys! There was nothing showing on my render results. It seems that the problem is the Light Path in shadow Ray.
You can either remove the Light path in shadow ray,
Replace it with Fresnel (ior 1.333) OR
Leave the Light path in shadow ray and add one more MIX SHADER right after the one where glass, light path and transparency are plugged in. Unplugg the transparent Shader from the old Mix Shader and plugg it into the new one. ( Basically....dont have the ligh path and the transparent shader plugged into the same MIx shader)
    I hope it helps....

Thanks, this helped me to start of but if you want rounder shapes and animation, I suggest WARPING / DISPLACING the textures. In blender, there isn't a node for this effect like in substance, but what you can do is plug the "color" of a noise texture into the location of the mapping node before the voronoi one. For the animation you can the add (with vector math) a combined xyz and animate one axis the axis.
    Hope this helps.

Not a bad node group for fake caustics but i would note that shorter wavelengths of light are more influenced by IOR (at least if i remember right) so your blue should get IOR added and your red should have it subtracted

    • @rdg6797
      @rdg6797 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, you remember correctly, blue gets more IOR, and red less.

Very nice tutorial, but, I can´t see the voronoy effect in the water after apply the nodes. GPU model can affect? I have a Nvidia GeForce 750 (I know, is older GPU but...) with 2GB of memory. I follow the instruccions step by step and nothing. Maybe for ilumination setting? I using an area light under the swimming pool in portal mode and HDRI for global illumination.
    Thanks for helping me.

Donyou know if the caustics option added in blender 3.2 actually works with water with volumetric scatter?. I used it on a single surface and get very dark water, no caustics any. Ore. Perhaps I should try an actually closed volume. Issue is the waves choppy surface i created. Not sure how to keep that only on the surface, perhaps a vertex group

  • @hierandos4741

Since it's a shadow based texture, try to reduce the light in your scene or even complete remove the lights in your scene adding just the HDRI, than gradually add the lights in your scene until have the expected result.

Nice attempt. But I’m afraid the caustics don’t respect the geometry of the pool. Actual caustics are stretched at the walls of the pool dependent on the direction of the incoming light.

    • @hugoantunesartwithblender

Cycles don't produce caustics, this is a method that allow you to have close and fast results. If you want real caustics, render witouth them, copy the scene for luxcore, render objects with bleck except the pool and render light paths at 100 %
