    With all the grief Mama Cass put up with about her weight and how she looked opposite Michelle Phillips, there was no doubt Mama Cass was the vocal leader of the group, Without her it wouldn't have been the same.

      I remember loving Mama Cass as a little boy. She made lighthearted fun out of her weight, and was always joking about her grapefruit diets. Everybody LOVED her for this . What a woman! I fell into quite a funk when she passed.

      Yes and no. When Michelle was kicked out, everyone realized her voice was a huge part of the group, and she was invited back.

    I swear I've NEVER seen any negative comments about Mama Cass's singing. All of them take a bow to the Queen!!!...If only she knew how good she was instead of getting bashed by her weight issues.

    That bass flub at 2:46 was unforgivable - but being the pros & troopers they were, The mama & Papas could still blend their beautiful harmonies at that very sensitive part of the song - BRAVO !

      @@guitarslave Spectacular harmonies. It must of been an amazing concert if you were able to see it live. It must of felt like a special time to be alive when that was new, it's still pretty good now when you listen to it. And it seems like there's a real freedom in how they sing and perform it together.

    • @JamieGifford
      @JamieGifford 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Their timing went awry at the end because the bassist made an unforgivable mistake coming back in with the root note of the original key instead of the new key, which confused everyone for a minute while they sorted out their tuning. They recovered remarkably!

      I used to sing in a semi pro band (Played in pubs and clubs) when the lead singer left the band (I started as drummer). He had a clear tenor range, while I was around F#1 - A5 (Baritone close to bass), so we had to fuse backing vocalist (Usually girls) who covered the higher ranges, but when we had to make harmonies together, it was a nightmare, God I missed my drums.

    • @trfesok
      @trfesok 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds pretty good, considering both the limitations of live recording in 1967 and all the vocal overdubs they did in the studio. On the other hand, this also explains why the original lineup only did about 30 concerts.

    Yes sir. I think this is their best version of the song, and they sang it a lot. Probably at the top of their game here. At 2:25 Mama really belts it out. I love her performance, even though they seem out of key at times. She really could sing, not just yell. Cass was one of the best of her generation, in an era that did more for American popular music than any other.
