Well, after close inspection, I've concluded that the tempo fixed itself. It's hard to tell who was following which tempo, but in the end one tempo prevailed.

It was the bass player, Joe Osborne, who got them back on track. Either way, I love the live version of this song. It’s actually sung with more passion than the original studio recording....which makes total sense considering the subject matter and the venue for that matter.

@@dallasuy95 Yea, the bass player gets a lot of flak for this performance, but I think he was alright. He made many mistakes that I think were due to not having much time to memorize the parts. But it's clear that he was a class A musician.

I can't help but share some personal information here. I'm in extreme metal// hard rock and traditional heavy metal enthusiast who grew up with all of the 60's, 70's and 80's rock vinyls. I was born in 1999 and My grandparents listened to 50's and 60's 'rock' music.
They never listened to stuff like Blue cheer, Cream, black Sabbath, or steppenwolf but, I learned so so so much music from their childhood when I was just a baby that eventually they started talking to me about how their was harder and heavier music that they basically had zero interest for whatsoever but, after my interests in music grew exceedingly and my favorite past time was learning and singing music from their era: My grandparents went against my father's wishes;;;((my father my uncle my grandfather and even 3 of my cousins are ordained ministers)(pastors) My father's parents took me to a couple flea markets and after they weren't impressed: they took me to a convention of some sorts where they could give me the opportunity to find harder and heavier music not only from 60's to the 80's, 90's bu they especially wanted me to discover the music before my parents' times and even more so than the past: they really hoped that I would lose my interests in the music of my elders and find music that was popular in my era but,
In all honesty, they never ever ever refused me my right to express myself or the opportunity to fully receive music and the gifts of music.
Even as highly respected religious public figures the only sinful thing that I know of them doing was owning secular music; though they DID NOT own any ALICE COOPER, and they didn't exactly entertain secular music by promoting secular artists...
I remember finding the line that they had drawn in accordance to being and believing they were godly people that did not believe in sheltering me or refusing me any personal freedom. Though by the time I was 9 years old I picked up my second instrument I began to learn secular music and they were so appalled they still to this day that in all of my years as an artist, an entertainer, a musician, and a performer they never stayed to hear me perform. They helped me with transportation to and from so so so many gigs, practices, lessons, meets, shops, and jam sessions but, they never stayed to see me play... I can't remember how young I was but, theyve told me all of my life that if I'm going to be listening to or playing secular music: I can do it out of their presence... They are so very religious and they've made it a point to teach me all that they can about being edifying to God; and they taught me that if I was going to pursue secularism then there would have to be a mutual respect that I did not disrespect them by playing secular music around them, sing any secular Songs, or most of all I were told that to refrain from mentioning or discussing secular topics in any aspect of their presence or their household.
The mamas and the poppas were one of the most recent artists that they had physical copies of and Ill never forget how influential they were for me in my youth.

This is so FABULOUS on so many levels. In 1967 the 'world' we knew was in turmoil not unlike it is today but, the music scene was divided between this sort of folk music of which the Mamas and the Papas exemplified sheer perfection, and harder edged rock-and-roll which would eventually win out for the next decade or so. My opinion for what it's worth. Don't really need anyone to get in my face about it. Peace & Love!

Here is one of those live recordings that absolutely astound one when compared to the Orig. studio recording. There is NO comparison, in particular are the harmonies, pristine-to-perfect, beautiful, lush and full. I make it habit to listen to this version @ least once'a week. The same can be said of YES's (Yessongs live), Lou Reed's (Live Rock and Roll Animal) and RUSH's (All the World's a stage) as just a few examples.

James Giberson I agree completely. I remember seeing the track listing of this song on the Monterey Pop film and, based on hearing the original studio recording so many times, thinking “Hmmm. How the hell do you perform that song live in front of 20 thousand people?” Well, this is how you do it. You attack it unapologetically and make the audience feel exactly what the song is about.
I mean, they are basically singing the lyrics to each other; you can tell that it’s still a little raw for all 4 of them. Really stunning, and a perfect transition between Jimi Hendrix and Ravi Shankar in the film.

The documentary version of this song is superior to the 1970 and 2023 album version for this simple reason: 0:23
John and Denny's voices are heard alongside Cass but in the album versions Cass's voice is heard too loud and John and Denny are overshadowed, far behind. I love Cass's voice but in that part the song loses its essence and I like the Monterey version more than the studio one, in the 2023 remastering I thought they would change that but they didn't.

Interesting stuff which acknowledges the significant contribution of Doll and Godess Michelle. Huge fan of Michelle here. Peace🙏

ilove the faces in this video really well done picking couples & singles in the crowd, i got to laugh when I see all the nerd look'n dudes with these amazing babaes , I tell ya it does not end well for those nerds & usually in very short order, I know I've seen it soOO many times, they become clingy, smothering, needy, then paranoid & (hard not 2 when you have that sexy bod next 2 u & your saying YIPPY under your breath 24-7) but as a photographer of more than 3000 women my easiest way past Mr. nerd was to simply show the woman what I'm capable of & what she was holding back on.. the release was what I lived for.

people who have known me for what seems all my life, say I have changed the least....but as a long time admirer of the new wave of 1967 and on...Doors, et al, I have to admit that if the great records of 1967 had not come out and the mamas and papas and spoonful, etc had continued...would it have really been all that bad?

OK, I guess you're joking, but if you're not... Cass Elliot died in 70's, John Phillips in 2001, Denny Doherty in 2007. The surviving member is Michelle Phillips, but of course she's not 20 anymore.

@@sphynxkittens5894 I agree. She looked like she was in distressed or nervous and just fidgeting like she didn't know what to do w/ herself at the moment. Or maybe she was just camera shy b/c she pushed her sunglasses back up and covered her face and started messing with her hair like she was flattening it or scratching her head or something to distract herself from whatever. That's my take on it.

The most amazing 'Dream of a Song' without hate but only Love, in protest against infidelity. At the the very least, surely we can be true to the one we are with during the time we are with them. Whether that be 5, 10, or 50 years. Too much to ask❓
