I read this as a teenager or in college. I remembered much of the story except the mother not loving her children. Don’t know why that needs to be a part of the story. Poor son, just wanted to help. I know things are confusing when you are young in a family that needs more money. It’s the parent’s attitude towards it that really shapes you.
The boy must’ve felt he should step up and be the man of the house. The first thing out of her mouth when the boy asked what luck meant was to disparage his father.
