- How to Tie the Slip Knot
Learn how to tie the Slip Knot in this super easy to follow video.
The slip knot is often one of the first knots we learn but overlooked as an instructional knot.
It is a stopper knot which is easily undone by pulling the working end. The slip knot is related to the running knot, which will release when the standing end is pulled. Both knots are identical and are composed of a slipped overhand knot, where a bight allows the knot be released by pulling on an end; the working end for a slip knot, and the standing end for a running knot.
“The slip knot is closely related to the overhand knot, the difference between the two being in the treatment of the end. In the former the end is doubled before it is finally tucked. To untie, all that is required is a smart pull on the end of the rope, which withdraws the loop and causes the knot to spill instantly. A slip knot may be tied in the bight as readily as in the end, but the load must be on the standing part of the knot only. It is used wherever the necessity to cast off suddenly may arise.”

I have been a commercial fisherman for 17 years and don’t know how to tie a slip knot. Figured it was time to learn lol.
From a “leftie” thanks so much. Being left-handed really does make simple tasks difficult
The important thing here is that if you reverse the directionx then you can have it tighten around the object (tree for example) as you pull on the long part of the rope (not the end).
This is useful for may things , including hammocks. And is simpler than wrapping the end of rope around itself and then making a knot to create a loop in the middle of which is the end of the rope and rotating that around the object do that It cinches up on the back isnrtwad of being pulled away from the object and thus creating a distance from the object (where the knot is) which causes it to rotate freely around the object (which is a disadvantage or advantage depending on whether you want the thing to fall down when tension is no longer applied).

The only difference between the overhand slip and marlin spike is the toggle or whatever you put through the marlin. That's it.
So if you know how to tie one, you know how to tie the other.

A beam isn't going to help you much - it's a slip knot
Slip knot should still be a secure knot with a pull release tail, your knot is not secure and would just come undone with any load on it

Uhmmmmm....I like your tying efficiency, but I think you got this backward. The way this knot is tied, the short end of the rope is the end that slips out. That leads to failure. You just have to reverse your rope ends and then it's the long end that is allowed to slip.

Now I am trying to figure out who had the temerity to mislead me in my impressionable youth - my dad or the boy scouts. I love heard this story but haven’t seen any pictures of it. So I was just wondering was this a noose or a slip knot. I was a laborer for 16 years and used slip knots a lot. @@TrailguidePicturesAs a logger we USE the REAL SLIPKNOT to retrieve a LOG in the Water.. Can't Imagine if I using your SLIPKNOT.. I throw the rope to a LOG.. Caugth it with the LOOP.. ang then diving into the water to reach for the WORKING END To TIGHTEN IT... then get out of the water then Grab the STANDING END to secure it. THE REAL SLIPKNOT IS SUPPOSED TO TIGHTEN ITS LOOP WHEN YOU PULL THE STANDING END✌️
