Simple Gradual ON / Fade OFF Circuit For 12V(Car LED's)

  • Here is a simple circuit that will allow you to have Ultrabright LED's or small incandescent lamps gradually turn on, then fade off. It does not get more simple than this. Resistor and capacitor values can be adjusted up or down to accommodate your needs.

    Wow ur explanation with demonstration is just splendid! I love how u explain what's the role of each resistor and capacitor does! Though I don't know how the sizing of those components are calculated.

    Thanks for this video. I used it to make a flashing light for a lighthouse lamp. The ramp up/down gives the effect of the old style rotating lights.

    Great video! Do you have any recommendations for turning on an LED for 3 different time presets? Say for 1 second, 2 seconds, or 3 seconds then immediately turns off. I'd need some kind of 3 stage switch, but I'm not sure what to use to set the time intervals for allowing power to the LED from the battery.

    Hi, would this be suitable to delay both the on and off time of a relay. I have put together two of your other videos (Delay relay On & Delay relay Off) but incorporating them together doesn't seem to work for me. I may be missing a few things, but the thing I am trying to do is avoid erroneous switching on and off (chattering) of the relay by just using capacitors and that is where I'm at in my learning curve right now.

    I was looking for a relatively inexpensive circuit for an 8 channel sequential Christmas tree light controller. This fits the bill perfectly. I am using a 555 to pulse a 4017 decade counter. The outputs will enable 1 of 8 channels of DC controlled dimmers I have. each output will feed a different color of lights on the tree. I did not want to go to the trouble of using an Arduino as I have not done any work with them and I do not write code. This along with my sequencer should work perfectly. Thank you!

      Sounds like a good idea.
      Remember to connect the 9th output of the decade counter to the 'reset' connection of the 4017, otherwise you'll have a short period of complete darkness every cycle.
      Also, to save on using such massive capacitors, you can increase the value of the resistors acting as the voltage divider in this circuit.
      ie, if both values are multipiplied by ten, the capacitor value can be decreased by ten times too, meaning only a 220uf cap could work.

      It depends on the type/power consuption of theses 10 diodes.
      But a standard LED strip for example is no problem, no changes to setup one or two, depening on soft start/stop preference.
      If you overdo it, the transistor might get a lttle hot (like with the light bulb in the video).
      Passive cooling can help to increase the life span in that case and is also not a big deal.

    Nice. I currently have 4 LED arrays on my boot lid ( yes it’s bright). Just worked by a PIR giving an output of 3.6 volts. I use this, via a N2222 transistor to work a 12v relay.
    Me being lazy, do you know if can I use the 3.6v to control the power transistor or will I need to step up my 3.6v first? I rather fancy fade in/out LEDs worked by a PIR.

    I have a smallish terminator 2 wall plaque of a terminator face. Upon the press of a button, the Led eyes flash on and off quite quickly. Do you think an electrician could put a capacitor in the circuit? The back is hollow and there seems enough wire? I’d like the eyes to light up and fade off? Cheers, Brian.

      Theoretically, the LED strip will behave like the two high power LEDs, but it does not need the shown pre-resistor because the pre-resistors are already integrated in the strip itself.

    Nice presentation of DC RC circuit principles! Any 110v auto dim/brighten circuits for a 60watt incandescent or clf/led bulb bulb you know of that i can fit into a typical light bulb socket housing ? Every thing I've found uses blue tooth technology, is expensive and is overkill for my need

    Would this, in theory, extend the life of LEDs and help against premature burnout?
    I've got some shoplights from Amazon (the 4ft T8s that are wicked bright).
    I've seen a handful of people who also have them that are experiencing premature burnout (some of the LEDs flicker, are dim and/or some just stop working full stop.)
    **Would limiting the power slightly and having them come on slowly (instead of hitting them with full power the moment the switch is flipped) help prolong their life and performance?**
    Or do electrical work and wear to the same principals as hydrodynamics? (Example, you'd never crack open a main water valve due to the risk of hammer destroying the system or/and the spigots/systems down wind)

      Nothing offensive about "Merry Christmas" anywhere and at anytime. We should Accept everyone's holidays, just as we accept their person. Saying "happy holidays" is just more inclusive, when you don't know the person you're speaking to.
      The rumor that Christmas was under attack was just a scare tactic that was created to push the majority to hate minorities. Other religions in the US tend to like Christmas, if at least for the holiday mood.

    excelent circuit and explanation, how could you rise the output to handle a load of 4 or 5 amps ? i try to drive a horn that imitates a bull or a cow , but the current consumption is over 4 amps

      Try a high current rated transistor. You'll need to experiment.

    Questions- I'm using a 63mini bulb which requires 7V - draws 630 mA. I'm going to use a 9V battery. If I change the 1st resistor value to drop the extra 2 volts, do I need to change any other component values?

      Hi. For 630mA, you might get away using a 2n4401, if it gets hot try a TIP120. You'll need to experiment with different transistor values. Make what I show, then swap one at a time.

    Can this circuit be used with a constant positive and a switched negative?
    I have a honda and would like to use this on the dome light (negative switched) it has LED replacement bulbs and am installing foot well lights. They foot well lights are 9-14volt 0.06-0.08amps I'm not sure what the dome lights are. Would this work on all 4 LEDs?

    Thanks! U can use, the same component's but the transistor, can replace with ”D718„. There's pins, are on the same place, but „D718's” Collector current is 8A and the Base current is 0.8A! Its 80Watts. Ofcorse, your scheme is more copability from mine. But with “D718„ u can install more powerful lamp. I thinking to try the mirrored scheme, with "B688„ PNP transistor or Darlington's pair. What do u think about that?

    sir I want the negative voltage at the base to turn on and off the transistor my vehicle uses negative voltage to control the switching on and off the light should I use a PNP transistor or should I make a NPN circuit for the dimming and soft start and have an PNP transistor turn on the NPN transistor or can we actually have an PNP transistor alone to make this thing work I am a beginner in electronics this would mean a lot to me, thanks.

    Hey..thank you for that impressive circuit. I did try it with the same components but unfortunately it doesn't fade off. The long fade in ( turn on) works, but not the long turn off. As soon as I turn off current, the LED turns off, like without circuit.
    What could be the isssue ? Would be glad to get solution. Thanx

    Thanks very much for the circuit, I plan to use it to gradually light the deflector dish on my Enterprise refit model. Actually, I'll duplicate the circuit and use a three-way switch so I change from a gradual orange glow (impulse speed) to a gradual blue glow (warp speed) and back again. The one difficulty I'm having is that the LEDs are never as bright when connected through the collector as when they're simply connected to the 12V supply. In fact it doesn't seem to matter what limiting resistor I use. I can bypass the resistor completely and it's still the same brightness.
    I'm using two bright white LEDs because I don't happen to have the bi-color (amber/blue) LED I plan to use, but I also get the same problem if I use an orange and a blue LED. They're nowhere near as bright as when connected to the 12V supply. I'd appreciate any suggestions. I'm using the values you specify (although I notice I get the same effect regardless of the value of the resistor going into the base). And I've used 220uF and 100uF capacitors.

      When the transistor is turned on, you should be getting full power to the LEDS. The only thing limiting the current would be the resistor in series with the LEDS. You can try reducing the value of the resistor on the base of the transistor, but don't go below 200 ohms.

      electronicsNmore Thanks for the speedy reply. The way that I'm reading the circuit (and forgive me, for I am stupid), is that the transistor is just a switch in this instance, and once it's turned on, the LED should be getting the same voltage as if it were directly connected to the main supply. Although that does look suspiciously like a voltage divider (pcbheaven.com/circuitpages/LED_Fade_In_Fade_Out_Dimmer/ ). I did go down to 1K Ω on the resistor connected to the base, with no visible difference.
      Anyway, thanks for the reply and I'll keep dinking with it.

      Each LED should draw 20mA, or 30mA if you want to drive them higher and reduce the life of the LED. 2 LED's in parallel with a series resistor of 150 ohms will allow 60ma of current through the LED's leading to the collector of the transistor. If you place 2 white LED's in series, then add a series resistor leading to the collector of the transistor, then the value should be around 200ohms to drive them at 30mA using 12VDC. The greater the amount of current you need to flow from the collector to the emitter, the base of the transistor will also require more current

      Got it to work. The white LEDs seem bright now. I found a 1K ohm resistor to the base worked fine. I'll have to hope that a bi-color LED proves brighter than the ancient orange LED I found.

      1 meter of LED lights on a strip should draw around 1/3A. The circuit should work fine. The larger incandescent bulb in this video draws more than that.

    So if I'm not wrong, the base/gate on a transistor is isolated from the collector/emitter path, so is there any reason the left side of your LED version diagram couldn't be running on a +5V source while the LED side is on a +12V source, as long as the grounds of both sources are connected together?

      So I ended up building it as all 12V like your second circuit, since I have some LED strip segments that in parallel will draw about 560ma when connected direct to a 12V source. The only difference is that the NPN I have is a TIP31C vs the TIP41A. With 2x3300uf caps the ramp is still a little too fast for me, but with a pair of 4700uf caps it's perfect. The only trouble is that even when fully ramped up, I'm only getting about 160ma across the C/E path of the transistor when using the default 1K and 330 ohm resistors. If I lower the resistor values, it increases the current available to the LEDs, but it speeds the ramp time way up too. Any ideas how to get slow ramp and 500ma at the same time? The TIP31C is rated at 6 Amps so I thought it should be fine, but maybe that's the problem? Maybe adding a second transistor circuit in parallel or series? Any guidance you could provide would be much appreciated! Thanks.

    What if you had varying levels of amperage? Like led strips you cut to size. If you had say a ~4amp circuit what would you need to upsize to make this work?

    Because I want to use this kind of method in my project. You see, I was thinking of using Arduino for my project and I want to make a sphere object which might consist of a speaker, IR detector which will producing lights and sound that gradually fades on when people touch it and fades off when people moved their hands away.
    I'm not really good with this technical stuff yet so I hope you could share some of your ideas how does this work ?

      750mA is kinda high, but it may work. Make sure you use a TIP31A NPN transistor, and the electrolytic capacitor must have a voltage rating of 35 or 50v.

    Hi. Thx for shearing this circuit. I built it, works fine. I want to use this circuit for my car dome light. I need your advice for connecting this circuit to my car dome light. My car door switch connects negative (-) supply but this circuit has switch connects positive (+). Is there any chance to connect this circuit directly to two wires of the dome bulb. Please help.

      Prabuddha Koralagama The upper left side of the schematic that supplies power to the transistor, is where you take the +12VDC connected to the dome light and connect it to the circuit instead. You take one relay contact(The Common Terminal) and connect that to +12VDC power(Batt) that is always ON even with the key off. The other relay contact (NO) is connected to the dome light. Pretty simple.

      Thx for quick response. I tried but didn't work . door switch work with negative (-) supply there for when the door close it disconnects negative (-) supply . But according to the circuit it want disconnect positive (+) supply otherwise LED want fade off. If I'm wrong please correct me. I'm a newcomer for electronics.     I'm having trouble buying an assortment pack of resistors on Amazon that have exactly 330k with 56k, 36k, and 470 resistors. Aside from the established range in the diagram (56k-63k) can I use resistors just barely outside of that range?
    And will 1/4 watt resistors work for this project?

      Bence Zmák Hi Bence. Since you are only using (12) smd5050 LED's, use the schematic shown at 5:30 in the video. These LED's draw around 1.2A per meter. So you will be way under that current level using only (12) LED's.

    And this is true analog, everything work at DC, no flickering. The best for aquarium.
    Just imaging how shrimps will survive digital smooth on starters operating at 600-1000Hz.
    They already have small shock when light abruptly starts up.

    How long can I keep LEDs on using just capacitors?
    I'm planning to use your circuit in a DIY aquarium LED light, and the photo period will be controlled by a simple timer. This timer will turn all circuit on and off, so I can't use "Water Heater Timer Circuit ~ Auto Off" circuit.

      Depends on the value of the capacitor. if you use a supercapacitor you can get a VERY long run time.

      Add another diode(same direction) at the junction of the capacitor and 2 resistors which connects to the same switched on power as the diode on the left in the schematic. You should have instant on, and fade off.

      You need to use the delay off circuit from my. video below. The schematic is located in the video description area of that video. Using a larger value capacitor and or resistor can give you the time you need. You can use this gradual ON/Fade Off circuit in conjunction with the other circuit.

    Hello, I've probably made your schematic (the first one low amperage) at least 6 times and have swapped all the components out probably 3 times each. I've probably purchased at least 8 transistors thinking I burned them up. On the breadboard it works perfectly, but once I solder everything to a PC board, it fades on and fades out fine, but the LEDs stay lit at about 10%, never fully dimming. Any ideas? I thought maybe the diode is letting in reverse current or the transistor was letting current across it too, but i've replaced all of those components at least 4-5 times over. I'm hitting a brick wall, can you offer any pointers?

      Hi Scott. Sounds like the power from the switch(the far left side of the schematic) isn't FULLY turning off. Make sure it is. When the power is off, it's not possible for the transistor to turn on.

      If I hook up the ground cable and the collector, I receive the 10% lit LEDs. This is what is leading me to think that there's a current leak (or something). Also, this same layout on the breadboard, seems to work flawlessly. (makes me think I've missed something) After tracing these routes over and over, building it 5 or 6 times, still getting the same result. Mind boggling!!!

      This circuit couldn't be any easier. You're doing something wrong, using the wrong part/parts or connecting the transistor wrong.

      2 Amps is a lot. I would do a Google search for "fade off circuit". Look for one that uses a mosfet.

      Hello. You must be using a load which draws a lot of current, or you need to experiment with different value resistors and capacitor.

      But there is a long delay before the transistor provides the minimum voltage needed by the LED to illuminate even slightly. It spends half the time off and then half the time gradually fading on.

      At 3:15 you could see how well it works. Clearly the LED will not immediately turn on starting at a very low dim state. The voltage needs to climb until the voltage is high enough to start turning on the LED.

    so i built this circuit, and the LEDs light up as in your video, but when i remove voltage it just simply goes out. the only difference is that im using a 100uf 16 volt cap. any ideas where im getting th short on this?

      electronicsNmore the issue was actually the positive lead setup... i was shorting there... split that up and we were off... on a side note, the prop i installed this in helped secire a grand prize win at a Maleficent screening in Hollywood at the El Cap! thanks for the awesome vid!

      Renan C. Any voltage works. Refer to the link below. Usual mA is 20-30. and the forward voltage of R,Y,G is around 2.0V. For white or blue 3.1V.

      You can use lower voltages exactly as the schematic is shown. You may have to play with values to get "exactly" the type of fade on/fade off you are looking for.
