After the beans are cooked. Take about a cup of the beans, put them in a bowl and mash them up. Put back in pressure cooker. Sauté for 10 min. You will have a nice thick bean juice instead of clear water. Looks and tastes like it was cooked on stove top all day.👍🏻

Personally, I like to boil my beans for 3 minutes Let them sit over night, rinse them and cook in the Instant Pot. Why? The boiling softens the shell of the bean. Sugars from the beans escape into the water. The sugars are what cause gas. You are essentially having close to gasless beans. It's pure science. I know it takes longer, but you keep and have more friends!

I love your bean recipe. These beans freeze well. A 15 oz. can of drained beans is right about 1 3/4 cups of cooked beans. So I make up a batch, portion out, freeze and use in place of canned. So much better!

we almost always add some sort of pork to flavor them whether it be a ham bone, a hog jowl, ham hock or if we have nothing else we will toss in a few strips of bacon.
that is all we ever put in them and it is only recently my wife started using the instant pot. before then we cooked them on the top of the stove and it usually too 3 or 4 hours so you had to decide on beans by mid day or so. now as long as we got about an hour we can fix beans.
brown beans , cornbread, greens, fried taters and some sort of meat and you have a heavenly meal. summertime gets some fresh garden tomatoes to go along with it. love fired okra with it too.
man i'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Thank you for the recipe. The beans turned out great! I am very new to using an Instant Pot and appreciate the guidance. I used Adobo seasoning in place of salt and red pepper flakes in place of cayenne because I did not have any on hand. I also added red onions and black peppered bacon. I forgot to add the oil, but perhaps the oil from the bacon prevented foaming. I cooked the beans an additional 6 minutes because I preferred a bit more give in the beans. I ate the beans by itself and was quite satisfied.

    • @Thespicyapron

The Internet says soaking is beneficial. Beans are not commercially washed because of probability of sprouting. Soaking washes the beans and releases grit & dirt. The Internet says soaking beans changes the beans’ outer coatings & starches and they are more easily digested.
My packages of beans usually have a soaking time. My beans usually over-swell and crack or burst (even before cooking) if I soak them way too long. Any cooked beans are great in a salad. I eat beans for a side dish with cooked meat, along with cooked vegetables (I’m a pretty big eater). I love adding oil to my cooked beans if I don’t make beans with bacon, sausage, or other meat.
    Your bean recipe looks delicious.

Here in the country cooking capital of le monde, Kentucky, brown beans (a.k.a. pinto beans) can be served as a side dish or as the main dish. We fry cornbread, smother that cornbread with cooked pinto beans, add some green relish chow chow on top with some black pepper, brew some sweet tea; you in business. With all of that said, we cook brown beans just a tad differently than you. We definitely cook our beans with chopped, white onions, and then the main ingredient is country ham and/or a ham bone. That adds the flavor, and you wouldn't need the vegetable oil ingredient. Ham adds so much flavor to brown beans.

Having been born and raised in Appalachia? We grew up eating pintos and cornbread as a meal. The first things we were taught were to pour the beans out on a flat surface and make sure there are no bad beans or rocks in them and rinse them in a colander to get the dirt off prior to cooking.

    • @paulk5311

I just got my Instant Pot 2 days ago. Made pot roast last night, am making pinto beans per this recipe for a pork and pinto bean stew, tonight. I'm cooking the beans with bacon and bacon fat, will be browning pork tenderloin chunks, cooking with onions, garlic, peppers, tomato, chicken broth. I'm an impromptu kinda cook and will throw in whatever seasonings I feel like, last minute. LOL! That's the basic bare bones of my meal, and I'm making brown rice on the side. LOL!

I have had my IP for over a year now and have never made beans. But I found a recipe that I want to try and so I will be making black beans tomorrow. I have been watching various videos to figure out how much water to use since my IP recipe booklet doesn't really say how much water to use. It just says "enough water to cover the beans". So it is sounding like people are doubling the amount of water compared to the amount of beans. Thank you for this video. You are entertaining to watch. ;)

Like u said, beans are universal. I make beans depending upon my menu. As a matter of fact, I made pinto beans 2 days ago to make Appalachia bean soup & cornbread. I prefer a medium texture bean for general purpose. However if I'm making refried, then of course soft texture. I cleaned my beans, soaked for 4hrs then cooked using the soup button, high for 25 minutes & quick release. Preheating took about 8 minutes, so start to finish (not including soak time) took roughly 45 minutes to bowl up. Considering that anything made in a crockpot can also be made in an instapot, I love my instapot due to time constraints. My first experience with instapot was BBQ chicken. I marinated my thighs/legs over night with a BBQ dry rub, then before cooking I basted them with my homemade sauce. Placed them on the included rack, set to manual, high, 15 minutes, 10 minute slo release. Chicken cooked completely no pink, tender and juicy. Now my instapot is a staple go to for everything. I also use my air fryer toaster oven (made my cornbread in it (25mins).
With these 2 kitchen appliances, I don't need anything else (well except a nuwave wok). An instapot+ Gourmia air fryer toaster oven should be the only 2 appliances any college student should need for their dorm room & they can cook delicious meals in no time.

Enjoyed you video and I subbed and rang the bell.
We eat our pinto beans as a main dish. We use diced sweet white onions, and pickle relish as garnish and have a large platter of spicy hot cornbread on the side. We also use a little more water than you did because we are eating it more like a soup. 2 hours later, went to the grocery store and bought a few ingredients. Now I'm starting a 2 lb batch of pinto beans in my Instant Pot Duo. I added some leftover ham bone and ham pieces from Thanksgiving.

I am canning in my Instapot in pints after I soak them in the pint jars. 1/2 cup dry, soak until quite swelling then pressure cook for 90 min with natural release. Do turn off keep warm. Cost about $.50-.75 per jar. 1 lb = 3 jars with left overs for next batch. Rinse after soaking until foam is gone. Large limas swell the most so soak a strong 1/3 cup. Pass on lentils and split peas since they don’t work as well. Chickpeas are wonderful and so are pintos and the like. Can with the standard amount of salt for a pint jar. Enjoy the good food and the $ savings. Psi in 6 qt is 11.6 and I never use more than 10 psi. Since I am below 2,000 ft oof altitude. If you are at a higher altitude there is a formula for the extra time you need. Have fun
