I just watched this movie with my girlfriend last night... It was my 4th time watching and it never ceases to amaze me... One of the most beautiful and bad-ass movies ever made.
One thing I really love about this film is how every single swing of a blade is significant. Each one determines life and death. Like a bullet in a good action movie. Also love how Taka gets to show her Mama bear claws.
You wrote this 6 whole years ago my gosh golly, i do believe this is the perfect time for a very drunk Irish man to enter the frey.. Most underrated movie , excellent sound track, brilliant acting not only by Tom cruise but 3-4 other actors, Tom Cruise started off as a cool actor with classics like Top gun and Cocktail but then he showed his serious acting abilities in few good men, Interview with a vampire, Collateral, Oblivion and Last Samurai
1:13-1:17 An incredible details for those who love japanese swords Katsumoto sword is called a katana, and the ninjas' swords are called Ninjatō. The difference is the curve; Ninjatō does not have the curved blade, it is all straight, unlike the katana. Kudos to the movie maker who finally knows the difference.
supposedly ninjato didn't exist back then. it was made up by hollywood ninja movies. I wish a straight sword from ancient japan would pop up today so we had proof.
@@riquestrong9496 Quite a few straight swords have been recovered from Yamato/Nara/Heian periods, predecessing the ascendance of the Samurai ..... in fact, the Samurai or the military class adopted the curved sword from the Emishi people or the indigenous people of Japan, whom they pushed north to Hokkaido over centuries of armed conflicts .......
Cool how katsumotos ability to foght multiple opponents at once had been alluded to earluer in the film when we saw him training with the wooden swords
that stare of honor and friendship between cruise and the conqueror, priceless,i've seen it in my friends every time we clean out a bar, friends are people who you can turn your back to,no worries, phenomenal movie, cruise, life is empty without real friends
@Miscre8ted I'll beg to differ on that count. Been watching Tom since the beginning. Paul Neuman said after "The Color of Money, This kid is going to go all the way".
Sadly, most of the ninjas involved in this mission were genin freshly graduated from the academy. Only two of them survived. One returned to tell of the botched mission that claimed even the lives of their chunin and jonin supervisors. The other went rogue and has not been heard of since.
The Law of Conservation of Ninjas: One ninja, particularly when faced with massive odds, is a credible threat and is almost assured of victory. If he loses, it's a heroic sacrifice and a disproportionate number of the enemy go down with him. Any more than three ninjas are simply cannon fodder for our protagonists to kill at their leisure.
I will always love the chemistry between katsumoto and algren at 1:39 The way he ducks under katsus sword to slash the guy behind him. I love it Also 1:53 "did we just become best friends"
They saved each others backsides without a word exchanged. Yeah I think that qualifies as becoming friends. Algren didn’t run from a challenge, he jumped in straight on into a fight
In my opinion this is Tom's best film. However, Ken Watanabe's performance was superlative. Every word, pause, speech and fight scene, was acting at its finest.
Sounds like he's saying, "Kore Musha" Which is, "This is a samurai" I'm assuming referring to the dead they just killed like, "This is what happens when you cross blades with a samurai" And the others chime in with a grunt of agreement. "Ahhh".
@ Jake Smith According to a book I read they actually wore dark blue because the moonlight would have reflected off of them, making it harder for them to hide. Also, they did wear peasant's clothes...but only during the daytime, both during missions and in their free time/training.
+mrjordanx31 " it's the answer to life's questions" Said every dumb brute and thug ever. And the Samurai themselves were NOT dumb brutes (atleast most of them).
The background for the period of the movie [History] is incorrect. For example, the Japanese soldiers' armor and costumes in this movie are from the late 16th century, not the late 19th century (at that time from the end of the Tokugawa period to the beginning of the Meiji period). In addition, Westerners like the word "samurai", but in Japan at that time, it was more popular to call it "bushi", "buke", "bujin", "bumon" instead of "samurai".
True fact: There's no historical evidence that ninjas (which BTW, "ninja" is not a japanese word, it's the Chinese pronounciation of the Kanji characters for "shinobi", their REAL name) actually wore black. They usually infiltrated as vagrant workers in peasant clothing, and usually did little infiltration beyond what work allowed and various methods of sabotage. Besides, mottled gray clothing works better than black in the dark, it breaks up the silhouette in shadows better.
Ken Watanabe (real name - Carlos Maduro) he is a Mexican modern nude dancer. He was born on May 14, 1977 (age 46) in Monterey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Has Japanese descent. Ken Watanabe named his stage name after the Japanese actor Ken Watanabe. He made his debut in the modern nude industry in 2003 at the age of 26.
Reminds me of this Deadliest Warrior episode where they were doing a battle match up between a Ninja and a Spartan and had the fight take place in an enclosed, totally empty arena with no structures or terrain whatsoever for the Ninja to use, and so the Ninja just faced the Spartan in a straight head on 1v1 duel and of course completely lost.
Situational Awareness beats ninjas. Every time some bloke gets stabbed, its owed to their clumsiness. Just a look over here or a thought about security could have the "super-human" mounted in a trophy case.

That kid had BALLS of Iron
He was surrounded by men with balls of iron. His decision was rash but natural ... and it made a huge difference in the fight.
