Honestly, I don’t hate the smell of a perm. It sends me right back to when my grandma would get her hair done. She loved the tight curls on her short gray hair. And she had perms my whole life. I loved helping perm her hair and making her feel beautiful. It’s something that holds a sweet memory even if it doesn’t smell great. ❤️

My grandmother had the same she used to make me do it at 14yrs, I hated doing it as there were so many rollers it hurt your hands. The papers on the ends were the trickiest to get right. I'm proud to say I never fried her hair ever.

At a salon I worked at this client INSISTED on always perming over her 100% bleached hair. We'd have her sign a waiver that if her hair fell out, she couldn't sue. She did this for years. She always figured since her hair was 2 inches long, literally, that she was safe. So I left that salon and some time later I got a letter in the mail to give a deposition, that client was suing the salon, the owner, and the poor stylist who she insisted always did her hair. I remember going, sitting down, and going "Let me guess, this is Carol lastname and her hair has fallen out and she's now suing. They were stunned. I explained how she always signed a waiver (the salon had closed and the owner didn't keep the waivers by the time it got to the deposition), that she was warned and nobody except this specific stylist would perm her bleached hair. She knew the possibility that her hair would fall out but she didn't care. The lawyers all nodded when I finished and were like "Well thank you for coming in, you answered all out questions before we could even ask them."! lol They got a kick out of everything I had to say. Needless to say, the client lost. Thank god.

Did she leave bad reviews all over and was her hair that short due to over bleaching? You would think that if several stylist advise against it that they would accept it and not do anything with it. But I love that y'all have her the "fuck around and find out" treatment lmao I'm so glad y'all made her sign a waiver tho. Sometimes that's the only way dumbasses are going to learn lol

Some people do have the talent to home perm. Where I lived, a very small village in Australia and far from a hairdresser, a lady there, was so good at home perms she was very busy and the elderly ladies loved her. She charged no money. She did loose or tight curls and could follow a hair style. She permed my waist length hair and it was perfectly wavey. She was not a trained hairdresser. Shout out to Tonia!

She said that she didn't want it to look '80s, but she does. I was a teenager in the '80s, and her hair looks like that of so many people I went to high school with. So now she's retro. haha
You looked just like a friend of mine back in high school with your perm!! Wow! haha
I've had three perms in my life - when I was seven, I looked like a brown haired Little Orphan Annie. When I was in grade 7, I had long hair, but not the spiral perm thing - this was before that became a thing. Then when I was 18, 19. My mom used to have perms, and she even had a couple from home that some friends of ours helped her with. She used to have perms all the time. Then she just cut her hair into a pixie or similar and never had perms again. She coloured her hair, though, up until a few years before she passed. Her hair had very little grey, though, and it was still mostly dark brown when she passed 1.5 years ago.

I love all your color videos; I became a color specialist after six months of intense colorist, chemistry and physiology school, and after working as a stylist for about five years. But your info on perms was a bit off, in my opinion. The first solution, the ‘wave’ solution breaks the hair bonds; it basically softens the bonds to reform them. You had me until you said the neutralizer should be left on at least 10 minutes. That solution is not really a neutralizer; it is a gardener or a chemical that reforms and locks the bonds in their new position. It emphatically states to never leave it longer than FIVE minutes. No matter the health of your hair, if you leave the solution that hardened/rebonds the hair you risk breakage and the dreaded frizz. You have been my hero and inspiration for months now, since I found your platform. You are so very knowledgeable and so ‘spot on’ in everything you say. I am reminded of so many things I learned in the real world and it’s fun to listen to someone so knowledgeable but not a jerk about it. You are the only TH-cam I watch. I wish I could meet you in person and talk and learn more from you. I’m old as the hills and have been coloring since I was twelve and found out ammonia and peroxide took color out of blonde hair. But I just really enjoy your videos and have become an addicted fan

I remember having a perm as a teenager.. The whole thing went from bad to worse, the hairdresser was convinced my dry scalp was nits, so after embarrassing me in front of everyone she made me get my things and leave.. I left crying and went and told my Mum who checked my hair (no nits) and went back and got mad at them, saying it was supposed to be for my birthday, I was meant to be having a nice day etc, until they gave in and did it.. So then I ended up being treated as though I had an infectious disease..
The perm itself came out terrible! It made my hair so much shorter, the curls were super tight and I was so upset that it didn't turn out as I expected. It was probably a revenge perm! I felt ridiculous. But I remember my mum telling me I was ungrateful because my Dad paid for it. I dunno, maybe she was right, but it kinda just made me feel guilty, ungrateful and like a shitty person on top of feeling ugly, not like myself, embarrassed and generally sad. Wasn't fun. Then when it grew out it was poker straight with mad curly ends.. Not an experience that got repeated.. Perms should be banned lol

Ah, the nostalgia! As a teen in the late 80's, *of course* I had it permed - though it took more than a year of me pestering my Mum, she eventually agreed that the next time my auntie came around to perm *her* hair, I could have it done too - and I absolutely LOVED it! Within a couple of years I was confidently doing it myself, but styles changed as they do, and when the "corkscrew effect" perm came in a few years later - somewhat similar to today's "chopstick effect"? - and I'd already moved away, it was an awful lot easier to just visit the hairdresser's than to try wrapping all 80+(!!) perm rods into such little sections by myself, and do so evenly! I loved the created look, but even two decades later I can still remember the pain of having to lean over that rinsing bowl with the combined weight of all those heavy rods pulling at each and every strand simultaneously, and the tears that'd be running down my face... oh, the things we do for fashion! But anyways - would I try a box perm again? Probably, yes! - but then again, I've never bleached my hair blonde, or over-processed it (yet!), and strongly believe that where chemicals are involved, it's best to always follow the instructions - to the letter! And if that somehow makes me boring? - well, feel free to yawn away, but I'm not the one who's ruining her hair on the altar of the 'gram, now, am I?!🤗

OMG yaaaasssss...thank you!! I also hate perms, once I past state boards I don't think I ever did another one. My specialties are cut/color. I have actually had several clients I was able to convince to stop perming. I feel that with an appropriate cut for the hair type you can create all the fullness and movement you need. There are so many color techniques that are great for adding the perfect finishing touch to the style. I would always tell my clients - when they would say they had a "good" stylist and they could never make their hair look like the stylist did - that doesn't mean the stylist is good! Just the opposite. A good stylist will leave you with a cut that you will be able to deal with easily at home. And of course will let you know what products they are using. I loved being able to get people out of the perm habit with a good cut!

Wavy/swirly hair here. Have a friend with perfectly straight hair who's been thinking of doing a perm for a while. I cannot comprehend why she wants that. I'm a guy,i have short short hair and i still have to spend 30 minutes every morning trying to put my hair into place. Her hair is down to her waist and so far her hair taming technique every morning is just brushing it. I don't think people with straight hair understand how much maintenance curly/wavy hair actually requires. You can't just brush it and walk out the door. Even when washing and drying it,you need to do everything different or you'll look like you got electrocuted.
People think we wake up with flawless waves every morning 🫠

Honestly opposite for me. My straight hair had to constantly be brushed so it would fluff out or else it would lie flat and greasy and I’d have to wash it every. Single. Day. After my perm? 4 days EASY and I look great. Hadn’t brushed my hair in ages for a bit when I wasn’t feeling it during winter and it still looked good. Super low maintenance which is perfect because I do not like giving a fuck about hair haha

When I was a kid….every Easter, I was forcefully given a perm by my aunt, (in cahoots with my mother) I would be forced to sit in a chair for FOUR hours! While my aunt rolled my hair into those curlers so tight that I wanted to scream. I looked like little orphan Annie by the time she was through with me. I dreaded Easter for years and still stay out of arms reach of my aunt. I was a victim of the 80’s.

Yep I was the proud owner of a 'scrunchy root perm' in 1986... 🤦🏼‍♀️
I already had pretty wavy hair naturally, so god only knows what I was thinking whining until my father gave in and paid a fair few £'s for it..
I will admit it did look nice for 80's hair, and made holding a long layered wavy style in place without gallons of hairspray easy, but perms were so damaging back then! I don't know if much has changed because I don't know anyone who's had a perm in years.
Not something I'd do again tbh! 😄

I feel this soooo much. My mom has barely wavy hair and it’s super thin so she brushes it constantly to fluff it up. She did this to me until high school. I have super thick curly hair and she gave me the hugest frizziest mess of hair that was a nightmare. 8th grade when I made a friend with curly hair who showed me how to style it was like a miracle.

In the 90s as a teen I had a perm done on bleached hair. (The hairdresser was not happy with my decision but did it anyway.) According to the circumstances it went out okay and my hair was not completely dead, but as soon as it rained I looked like a badly groomed poodle. I was happy when it finally had grown out and would never do it again! 😁

I've been watching a lot of hairdressers reacting to home hair fails, and I'm so surprised by the lack of historical knowledge. In this case, I need to say that my mother was using home perm kits AT LEAST 40 years ago. She did this in the living room watching tv, and I would help. I remember one where the perm lotion was a foam that soaked into the rolled up hair (in theory). These box perms were advertised on tv.

I know this video is super old and all but I felt the need to comment anyway. My mother use to perm her hair at home regulary, she owned the dedicated equipment for it and everything, now granted this was in the mid to late '80's but it really wasn't uncommon where I lived. She even gave me a perm once after I had my hair chopped off do to hair lice, btw about the only thing I *would* recommend home perm or streatener for is removing head lice nits after you have killed all the adult lice. You put it on comb it through and leave it for only a few minutes then wash it out, the nits come un-glued from the hair and can be easily combed out! Probably the only good use for this product.

Btw, I took an oliplex class that completely changed my mind about perms. Using that with the perks completely changes the end results and they can be so versatile nowadays.

The best perm I ever had was done at a Salon. My hair was quite long and layered and it was beautiful! Nice soft curls so glad it got it done at a salon. Perms were so popular then and lots of people brought Toni home perms and seen some terrible home perms. To get beach waves at home I use a hair product that encourages curl and scrunch my hair. I do have a tiny bit of natural wave and it works for me and stays about 3 days unless I go to the beach and swim lol

Thankfully my mom knew what the hell she was doing when it came to wrapping but there were more than a few times that my hair was a disaster until I got a haircut to remove the damaged ends. Ironically I had an actual hairdresser completely burn my hair in college. It stunk for weeks and that was my last perm ever. 🤣

Bonjour Monsieur Hair Buddha. Sorry to be here again, but this subject has remained me ancient souvenirs. When I was a very little girl, my mother used to going to the hairdresser's. There were many very old ladies. It was not a secret, in our entrance, that they were in, because of the stinky smell, perm products. It was awfull how repulsing "perfumes" they were. As I was here siiting and waiting, I was fascinated about the ballet of the hairdresser's hands on these old ladies' skuls. But I noticed that the hairdresser put the "bigoudis" that were very little and narrow in a certain plan, it was extraordinary because it made me think the bigoudis were many soldiers of an hair army so that they made war to the straight hair. After these soldiers' operations, the skulls were covered with grey or salt and pepper cheaps. I didn't know it could have resurrect (?!) upon antiques days. It is a pity. Goodbye and thank you.

As a retired stylist of 30 yrs, there are 2 different types of perms. 1. Acid perm ( mild) 2. Alkaline ( strong)... I didn't like doing perms on women that had their hair colored. Because now you are putting 2 chemicals on your hair. But that's what the women want. I tried explaining it to ladies, but it went in one ear and out the other. Was their hair damaged? Of course it was. It was mostly the elderly women that wanted this done bcz I was going to set their hair on rollers, and put them under the hair dryer until dried. Take out the rollers and style their hair with a lot of teasing so their hair will last a whole week.

You said there was no innovation or updating of perms. I just wanted to share Wave Nouveau with you if you've never heard of it. I could not tell you if it smells better than old perms.
But i can tell you its a different and far improved and more versatile product from the old perm. I would be very interested to see your reaction to a bunch of this wave nouveau stuff, especially considering how different the steps are and especially considering how much its used on black 4c afro hair when the old kind of perm would NEVER give a nice result on afro type hair.

Once when I was a teenager (80s and 90s) I used Sun-in to "bring out my highlights" (made my light brown hair yellow orange, of course) and a little while later my mom decided to give me a home perm, the body wave type (I have naturally curly hair but wanted those spiral ramen curls). Neither of us realized that the peroxide in the Sun-in was a type of bleach, so my hair melted. When I went to the hair dresser to get the rest cut off, she scolded me "you can't bleach and perm!" and I was like, "I didn't bleach it!". LMAO. Also, my grandmother colored her white hair a "winter wheat" blonde, but she used a regular Clairol box dye to do it. My mother had always referred to it as "bleach blonde". Grandma would get perms, too, but now I know that she was not actually bleaching and perming. We obviously didn't understand anything about lightening and coloring hair. Understandably, I now stick to hair color on my gray roots and color masks on the rest. I leave the perms alone.
