      Thomas F they said it was their recommendation for people that can't spend $3800 on a body.
      Basically they are the same, but the d850 does better when you can really get close up.

      Tony & Chelsea Northrup I just took a picture the other day of one of those spiders from early in this video. Due to my budget, I use only a Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, therefore, not nearly as impressive as this d850. I watched your review of the nikon d5600 and I'm aching to get the all in one bundle off of walmart.com.

    First time I've heard the point that in DX mode the focus points cover the whole range. I think that's an important point as you can switch to DX and have complete range for action shots. Viewfinder image in DX was helpful too. Good point about seeing what is coming in to frame. Helpful; thank you. :-)

    The D500 is 10FS? so wouldn't that be better for birds? plus with the extra crop reach?

      Jan-Frederik Schulte don't worry about the specs too much, some of my racing shots with a d5200 were featured on magazines. D850 is killer; but Its not like suddenly your d5300 becomes an iphone lol

      Buy a D850 with credit, and commit to making the payments each month on time. Sacrifice something else that you were spending money on. The wonderful experiences you'll have along with the satisfaction will be worth cost.

      Probably because you don't have the lenses and the will to do that, this summer i rented a 200-500 5.6 for one week and i got amazing shoots with my 5500, pretty sure you can do the same with the 5300. ;)

    • @Eiranion
      @Eiranion 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the Tamron 150-600 5-6.3, so I do have the glass ;-) And I'm getting great results, this is just wishful thinking. I'm mostly annoyed with lacking frame rate and especially RAW buffer, and the AF system could of course always be better.

    • @losmatix
      @losmatix 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I started with 5300, took some of my best work with it. I'm at the d750 level now, with much better glass... it just takes time build.

    APSC are great for open land wildlife, however, for forest birds and animals, full frame sensor has advantage with better low light, 50% of bird shots are in shades..

    • @JM-nz8gw
      @JM-nz8gw 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true what you said, however, the more light advantage is better when you fill the frame. If you shoot DX, you should get the same ISO/low light performance as a D500.

    Ton & Chel, where are you shooting this? My wife and I are looking for good places in CT and at the shore. I like that you have a blind there, assuming the subjects are in 'range', not requiring too much cropping. She has a 500 with 500mm and I have a 750 with a 600mm.

  • @woodygreen6826
    @woodygreen6826 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    D850 looks like a dream camera, for sure. One point, though, isn't it still easier to get a focus point on a distant subject with a D500 with the subject being larger in the viewfinder?

    Tony that lens mount seems pretty sturdy, I see you are holding it with one hand on the camera with the lens dangling. I heard the lens mount and body and shutter are reinforced, is that your findings. Both of you are making this camera harder to resist purchasing, great work as always.

    I do like the idea of getting rid of my D750 and D500 to work with one body. I found myself using the D500 for most things but couldnt bring myself to get rid of the full frame. Its just nice to have a full frame for low light/indoor stuff and portrait shooting.

    • @ancientfishing
      @ancientfishing 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nikon 200-500 man, its a winner, only $1400 and very high quality. Yes, the $10,000 Nikon 500mm prime is better, but that's if you have $10,000 to spend to gain 1 stop of light.

  • @Rob_van_der_Linden

    It's almost as if this video was specially made for me, except I don't really shoot wildlife, not that I don't want to, but the nearest wildlife to me is an awful public transport ride away, and I so want to write a huge rant about that, but that's not gonna add to anything :-),.... maybe I should get a car instead of the D850.
    Will have to wait for your landscape and travel reviews, but there's no rush.
    Thanks for a great earlyish review, keep up the good work!

    Hi - Enjoy your reviews. -Just purchased the D500 for the shutter release speed, the auto focus system and the buffer. I enjoy taking birds in flight. My D750 takes exceptional pictures but the buffer fills fast. Its early but I've noticed that the detail in the D500 doesn't match the D750 full frame. To get it all do I need to jump to the D5?

  • @AnandaGarden
    @AnandaGarden 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I find the under-discussed issue of "cropability" very interesting when it comes to evaluating bodies and lenses. I don't have an unlimited budget and shoot with a Canon 6D. I own the 135mm F2 and shoot almost exclusively for the Web. I find that the photos I take with the 135 and FF body are amazingly croppable - they look gorgeous even when cropped drastically; somewhat more so when shot in daylight than under tungsten or fluorescent lighting. The 135 gives me a sneaky feeling, like I'm getting away with something by shooting stage events at F2 and 1/800 and having the photos look wonderful. Yeah, who needs a long 2.8 stabilized zoom? I wonder if croppability would be an interesting subject for a future video.

    • @AnandaGarden
      @AnandaGarden 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      P.S. Tony, have you tried using Camera Raw for shadow recovery? Much better than Lightroom. The Camera Raw filter is very useful when I'm working on Tiffs or jpegs and need to tweak shadows.

  • @mattli911
    @mattli911 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You mentioned, what I was gonna ask/say, is how if you are always cropping, the FF image here will be the same basically as a crop sensor.
    But, wouldn't a crop sensor always get a closer/more detailed image? Or at least matched? You'd always have to crop to match the APSC FOV. If you are limited by the lens min. focusing distance, I'd think the Crop sensor will get same/more detail than high MP FF? Well, depending on the FF MP/AA Filter/etc.
    Seems like main benefit of FF for wildlife, is wider FOV, and if not cropping, then the image should be cleaner/better, I guess?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +mLichy911 generally, yes (see sdp.io/density) but in this case the density is exactly the same, so cropping the FF gives you equivalent results.

    If you still recommend the D500, how about the D7500? It shoots a little slower and doesn't have the D5 AF, but still, it seems like a good deal for the price. It's smaller, lighter and has the handy U1/U2 settings. Still uses the D500 sensor, so IQ should be the same.

    Tony and Chelsea.Great update on the D850. An off question. What do you think of google photos to free up storage while on the go? Reviews are great but, my concern is I believe google downgrades the photo when storing and you can never get that back? Not sure if that is fact.

    a really nice channel you have. I am just a 17 year old boy, but I really like your videos. I am saving money for a new camera now because my d200 has lots of dead pixels now and already 150.000 shots on it. My dream is to have a better camera one day, but to this day I have to save money. With only 42€/Month that will be a struggle, but I will make this somehow.

    nice comparison, but seeing as you are saying about the "viewfinder" experience in video, how about a compare with the fujifilm G X 50 s (a medium format camera- ~50 MP camera with the advantage of video and a mirror less cameras full time live view composition feature ). in light of the comparisons you made re the wildlife scenario this seems a good contender to match with.

    Does the DX mode generate crop sized RAW files, or just embed the data that the full frame image is cropped? I've used the 16:9 mode in Canon (just as a reference for what will be in frame when making it a wallpaper) and it just does the latter, but maybe less data throughput would give you more usable buffer even if it sacrifices the ability to recompose after the fact.

    hi
    I have a D500 with sigma 150-600 sport combo for wildlife and D610 with nikon 20mm 1.8 for landscape. I’m thinking to go for D850 in place of this two. Is this good idea in your opinion. Or should I wait a bit spare some money and sell only D610 and keep D500.

      Zdenek Precechtel a99ii , a7rii is good for studio work , but its too delicate , has 1 sd card slot and not enough wildlife lenses for that

    Great stuff. Question. What zooms were you using on the D850 and do you think that the camera will be just too good for those "cheaper" zooms like the Tamron 150-600 ?
    Also, I'd love to see the focus peaking in action. Thanks.

      @TonyAndChelsea  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the sdp.io/n200500, which is a pretty cheap zoom. we need to get better glass for the D850. But most people are using the cheaper zooms with APS-C bodies, so you'd have similar sharpness 1:1, and better sharpness when you can fill the frame.

    Tony, I have an upcoming trip to Eygpt. Wat travel lens would you recommend? I have about $3000 available to purchase the lens. I was thinking Tamron 24-70 f2.8 g2, Nikon 35 f1.8 and a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 g2 SP?? Let me know what you think. Thanks.

    Hi! I wanted to ask you which camera has the better AF speed and accuracy for Birds in flight ? D500 or D850 ? And there is a huge improvement in the AF speed comparing to Nikon D750/810 ?

    Do you think using the Olympus EE-1 dot sight on the hot shoe would solve the targeting problem you have shooting video with only the Live View available? I know it seems kind of gimmicky but it could be just the ticket in this case. Mirrorlessons did a good video review of it.

    How is it for ports action photography? I'm thinking the D500 is still the one to beat at half the price.

      +Chad Goddard I did shoot a soccer game at night and it went great. It's the same situation as wildlife... But if you get the Sigma 120-300 with the D850 you'll get some amazing results. But for the price, most will be happy with the d500

    As always, really appreciate the review. Would love to see specific recommendations for glass. 15ish-24ish, 24-70, 70-200 and 200-400 ish ranges. I just ordered the camera and am fully switching from Canon and need to replace all my L glass. I have already ordered the new Tamron 24-70 G2.

    I would absolutely love to have the D850, it would be a huge update from the D5200. But unfortunately my budget is rather limited and that likely breaks the deal entirely. Any recommended options I could go for instead?
    Lenses owned atm:
    - Sigma 50mm 1:1.4 DG HSM
    - Sigma 17-70mm 1:2.8-4 DC
    - Tamron AF 70-300mm LD Di

    I put my order in for the d850 one week ago along with the Tamron 24-70 G2. The store tells me Im going to have to wait quite some time to get the camera. Sad I sold my d750 to soon :(
    Question: Why would you ever shoot wildlife with the D850 in DX mode ? would it not be better to shoot FX then do your 1.5 crop (more or less) in post ? That way you could compose perfectly in post rather they get the one and only chance to compose in the viewfinder. ?

      Perhaps so one would not have to waste a lot of time waiting for Lightroom to digest those really big files.

      +lv8pv what Jack said... It's easy to get 1000 photos in a wildlife session and big files make the processing a PITA

    Tony & Chelsea would you make a d750 vs d500 and what would you recommend for someone stepping up in cameras,they say even iso noise level and night photography is better in D500,but d750 is fullframe? and i dont know

      Random PhotoEnthusiast Jared Polin says so but I don't believe him. Kai says correctly that the D750 is better. If you have any doubt just get the D850.

    How did you get the camera to NOT hunt for focus all the time? It seemed to keep everything in focus for this video. Is there a video mode for this or you had a guy manual focus through the whole video?
    I am in between the 5D Mark 4 and this one, and video auto focus is important to me, so please help guys

    Is there no increase in speed in terms of burst rate when using the DX crop mode? Since only about 56% of the pixels have to be handled, it should make a difference in performance, no?

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. It's probably limited by the shutter & mirror performance.
