Love when you say “let’s see how they get on.” Must be an English phrase
Thanks, Fil, for doing this analysis! White Room is one of my all-time favorite tunes and this version with Sheryl Crow is stellar. The energy coming from the audience in Central Park along with the incredible musicians all lend themselves to a first-rate performance. No, I had not picked up the guitar mistake before but, once you mentioned it, I could hear it clearly in the playback. Thanks again!

Fil. Spot on mate! Great work. I love it when you grab your guitar and start running through what, where, when and why something happened. Love it. It’s like situational awareness in the musical sense. Cheers.
They sound terrific performing another song that brought back memories of my youth. I appreciate your analysis because I learn something new with each one of these. Thanks.
All right!! Into the red on my cool-meter! It's interesting to me how the background visual display mimics the earliest psychedelic light shows...like lava lamps and kaleidoscopes! Great analysis and guitar demo!
What an awesome video. I grew up in a time when "Clapton is God" was spray painted on a lot of highway underpasses. I was too young to "get it" and then later i heard the studio version of "Layla" when I was driving and I've been hooked ever since. I'm surprised that I liked Sheryl so much in this. I like her but never considered her on par with Clapton. And I don't mind the mistakes. It keeps the guitar heroes that much more human!
Got to love the lace sensors in that fender. I like the addition of Sheryl Crow on the higher parts. As always, I appreciate the demo on the guitar. For me, it reinforces some of your analysis. Thank you! Rick, in Syracuse, New York
Then there's the version of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from The Concert For George, where Marc Mann plays all of Clapton's original verse parts perfectly. Besides also playing with E.L.O., Mann does a lot of work on film scores with Danny Elfman.
R.Gray You misspelled “Prince”.
@@garysarratt1 Marc Mann also played the same parts 2 yrs later at Prince's 2004 R + R H of Fame induction, but I was talking about the one with Clapton, McCartney, and Ringo etc.
Ah yes, how fitting that Fil is talking about mistakes given that Eric Clapton was Sheryl’s self acknowledged favourite mistake. So much so that she wrote a song about it with same title.
The thing about mistakes in live performances particularly with loud rock songs is that the audience quickly forgets about them as long as the band keeps playing and doesn’t continue to falter. I personally don’t expect the songs to be played note for note like the recording so deviations can be easily forgiven.
The relationship was doomed since he’s a Strat guy and she plays a Les Paul. 😞

@Jenny & Craig Adventures
Sheryl: It would really turn me on if you played with your 335 in bed. You were so hot in your Cream days.
Eric: I’m not that kind of guy any more.
Sheryl: Why do I always fall for Fender guys...
Man that sounds great with a full band!!. Not taking away from Cream though one of my all-time favorite bands. Great analysis as always! Nice telly too. !.
Hey Fil, Man, you really know your stuff. Still love it when you analyse with the guitar. For anyone into music, it's essential, from a learning aspect. Eric & Crow, both great to me, decades of experience. Great analysis as always. Peace & Happiness from Oregon, C.
Thanks for that! Two of my absolute favourite artists, decades apart. I also remember playing/singing white room in a cover band when I was about 20 years old, but in my case it wasn’t a particularly old song then 😎. 🤘
They are always fun to watch together, especially when they perform My Favorite Mistake. I hadn't seen this performance before. Love Clapton, and Crow is so often underrated. Love that you talked on mistakes. Great video Fil.
Great analysis Fil.
White Room is one of my favorite Cream songs because of its haunting atmosphere and drive...but the lyrical imagery and daunting surreal impressions provokes an emotional query.
Never seen this performance, Sheryl Crow vocal add a soft edge to the song. excellent analysis Fil nothing get by you when it come to music.
I love this version for the musicianship & the bluesy energy. There's something about Clapton & Crow together onstage...
I feel like he LOVES doing music with Sheryl, every time I see & hear them together. It's just pure joy, and always so much great playing going on. In this video Eric looked like he loves her band, too. Must be so cool when your ex approves of your band loll!!
Sheryl's multifaceted voice can go into high ranges - almost surprised she didn't choose to take her lines one octave up. It would have been pretty! .Maybe they wanted the tough, bluesy, more macho sound,.
When I see these two perform together, can't help thinking they should've stuck it out.. so much personal & musical chemistry & mutual respect.. There's nothing better than watching musicians play when they are super happy with the music & with the personnel onstage!!
Such an iconic song with two iconic musicians. I'm in awe! 🎸🎤😃
Hi Fil! I love Eric Clapton.....I always think of I Shot the Sheriff for some reason...that was when I first became really aware of him as a solo artist. Of course he was in Cream! Sheryl Crow had a gorgeous voice too! Quite good together! Good video you chose tonight! ✌️
I love Paul Gilbert’s lessons! He plays and talks about and still acts like an excited young guitarist. His melodies are awesome and serious and funny. Between Paul Gilbert and tomo fujita. Those two guys have ignited a child like passion in playing that I haven’t had since I was 11.
I saw Cream live, I've seen Clapton playing acoustic but I've never seen this clip until now!! He still gives me chills!💖
My mom's favorite ... R.i.p. mom's...
Tom Tom action unbelievable...
Eric rips it up..
Thanks professor
Wow!!!...Ufh!!!... Great Sing...Excellent .... Brilliant analysis and selection for it ... what to say about Eric, a Big Monster the Master ... Sheryl, a woman advanced in her time with enormous talent, a great guitarist, in my opinion, is already the size of Eric ... he The breakdown you do in the analysis is also great, I congratulate you on this huge selection for analysis ... great guitarists👏👏👏👏🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸👌👌👌👌♩🎶🎵🖒🖒🖒🖒👊🤘⚘⚘⚘ ❤❤❤
Enjoyed your analysis. Always liked Clapton. Fil if you ever get a chance I would love to hear your analysis of your fellow Brits Gentle Giant. So Sincere live video on German tv. All changing instruments and a whole band drum solo.
AWW FIL YOU KNOW HOW TO MAKE MY SUNDAY RAINY NIGHT. YOU ARE THE F*CKIN MAN BROTHER!!!!!!!!
OH,, THANK YOU FOR THE TUTORIAL. I'VE LEARNED SO MUCH WATCHING YOU BREAK EM DOWN AND DISSECT THEM. THANK YOU BROTHER.
Great analysis Fil! Watching Sheryl Crow here with Eric brough to mind a bit of a tenuous link. Ms. Crow covered "Keep On Growin' " some years back. I think Eric co-wrote that song with Bobby Whitlock when they were members of Derek and The Dominoes. And I think it was also covered by Delaney & Bonnie. Sheryl and her very competent band do great job and it's well worth a listen. Thanks Fil. Stay safe.
So proud of myself! I heard the mistake. Had no idea what the mistake was. I just knew it didn't sound right. Thanks for the wonderful explanation. And thanks for this video. I had no idea it existed. A true treasure.
Sheryl has turned into one of my very most favorite artists. She has developed into a powerhouse musician and singer! I look forward to your future videos on her work!
First time I’ve seen this vid Fil! Classic Clapton....brilliant as always! I really thought Sheryl Crow did a great job with her vocals and guitar! Totally enjoyed this! Thanks Fil! Cheers Mario! 😀👌🤘
I loved this song. Can’t remember who sang it back in the day. I love how they perform it.. thanks for this analysis, Fil.. hey, hope your pinkie feels better. It looks better.
Cream.
R B Ginger Baker, not Pete Brown. Plus Clapton, of course.
Carolus , thanks.. that was my first thought...
I miss the voice of Jack Bruce.
Great video but been a fan of Clapton since he started! Sheryl has a lot of talent and have seen her in concert. She's a class act as well. She compliments this song greatly. Did a lot of partying to this song back in the day when it came out. Great memories of great days in music!
Great analysis! ❤️ I’ve always been a fan of e... one of the few artists that I’ve seen in concert more than once!!
I would love to hear you analyze the Derek & the Dominos video of “It’s Too Late” & “Matchbox”: some mighty fine pickin’ along with Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash!!!
I also enjoyed watching you play - awesome job!! 🎸
Brilliant, as always, Dear Fil! ❤️
I really loved that you discussed how even "the best" often makes mistakes on stage. In many ways it's very similar to acting. If you "flub" a line on stage, you have NO OTHER OPTION but to continue on as best you can, which is why performing live is always like doing a high wire act. Once on a London stage, the great Lawrence Oliver accidentally spoke a key line of a Shakespeare play way too soon, a mistake that he never, ever forgot. Once he had committed to saying that ending line, there was nothing left to do but bring down the curtain, 45-minutes too early. Oops!
There is one thing I noticed about this great Cream tune with Cheryl Crow. While Eric always played the rhythm parts on Cream's recordings, on stage they only played as a TRIO, losing that "extra" guitar part. When watching this performance, I realized just how incredibly FAT their sound was when utilizing those extra guitars! I often think how Cream would have benefitted from a rhythm guitarist on live gigs, but I suppose that many fans would have been looked upon it as "cheating." Who knows?
Our niece is a professional actress and we saw her in a play in NYC. At one point an actor stopped talking and just froze up for what must’ve been 20-30 seconds, before running off the stage. The rest of the cast started up again. After the performance, we asked our niece what happened and she said she had no idea because after he ran off the stage he went right out the theatre door.

That's as bad as it gets. The only other Broadway story I heard that stands a chance was when a big name actor was doing a show, and during a dramatic moment, he let out a tremendous FART that was so loud that it literally rattled the chandeliers. There was no dog around that he could blame it on, so he just soldiered on. What else can you do?
@@tiffsaver LOL on your fart comment. May late Aunt always said "better out than an eye". I had a co-worker who would shake his leg with "and stay out".
Hey,
I saw her (opening act for Joe Cocker) and him live, but of course never together. So thanks for that, gonna watch it later, though.
But I have a pretty HOT suggestion right here. See, lately I was looking for Zatoichi, The blind Swordsman - classic Japanese martial arts footage - and up, amongst others, came the WAGAKKI BAND as recommended for you. What a lucky coincidence, that one. I strongly recommend to check it out, if you don't know them, you will simply LOVE it!
Cheers, Jess
Hi Fil!
Keep up the great work,
so great, still hoping for some breakdown of tim reynolds, some of the things he's doing are just mind blowing, he's playing chords i've never seen and i'm assuming he's playing in some strange key/tuning as well, eric clapton is amazing, and sheryl, uff what a brilliant lovely voice
Loved this performance! I caught the mistake..such a common happening with so many artists. Part of live shows. Take it in stride and rock on is my advice. Most the time audiences don't even detect it. Clapton and Crow great together! Thanks for great analysis and guitar demos Fil! 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
I forgot to offer a suggestion. Becaus of its unique position in the history of British RnR music: John Lennon was to say of this seminal recording, that there was nothing before and nothing after that could be described as uniquely British Rock and Roll. The song is of course, Move It.
The record is of course by, Cliff Richard and the Drifters.
There is no film of the original Drifters available but to listen to the work of session player Earnie Shear whose background in music lays elsewhere, is like listening to -- something that came out of the night and from seemingly nowhere. None of the Shadows were present on this session, just the two session men, lead and bass and Cliff's two mates on rythm and drums, however, there is a film, and it's in colour, of The Shadows backing Cliff on an early TV show seemingly iust a few months later. But its not the same, but still vary good. There is another live outing during a Cliff Richard reunion concert in around 2009. Its a big production with a second verse added thats kinda cute, but to my mind unessesery.
Rock on Fil and stay safe and well.
This is a great one. Never saw this performance. Did you ever see the "Oh the Married Men" performance of Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow? It was on SNL when I was a kid, but it always stuck with me. Thanks! (Love your Squier. We have one of the Classic Vibe 50s Stratocasters. Not terribly expensive, but plays nice).
Wow a triple treat - Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow and White Room! I love Sheryl Crow, but personally I didn't like her vocal performance in this song. It felt too low for her but she made the best of it. She does a great duet with Stevie Nicks, singing Strong Enough (To Be My Man). I'm very much looking forward to your analysis of Sheryl.
Angus Young talks about having small hands and having to adjust too.
As for EC continuing on after making a mistake, I think for many of us we learn at a young age to stop and reset after making a mistake, not just with music but almost every acquired skill. I feel that after gaining some level of competency it is far more useful to learn to continue on through to the end whenever practicing to develop that resilience to mistakes.
Great sound from a great duo. I didn't notice any mistakes because they are so good. Its like actors at a live play: they know how to work around errors.
More analysis of Eric Clapton’s songs please!
You do it so good. Maybe „Double Trouble” from Madison Square Garden for the next time? I would be so pleased 😉
FIL, COULD YOU LOOK AT DOING AN ANALYSIS ON ABBY ROACH AKA THE SPOON LADY AND CHRIS RODRIGUEZ? She was busking in around Ashville North Carolina. Very unique and very Appalachia.
Loved it! Some shows you want exact cord for cord play i.e. Pink Floyd otherwise creative changes are a one time experience, which create memories.
Love Sheryl and Eric together. Phil if you ever have nothing better to do, lol, give this a listen to. Music to the ears it is. Jewel - Who Will Save Your Soul - 7/25/1999 - Woodstock 99 East Stage (Official), especially at 5:35 in, bloody awesome. Great analyses as always.
Excellent break down of that song.
Oh Lord, I’ve always had a little celebrity crush on Eric Clapton. Love his album with BB King. And Sheryl Crow is such a rock star.
White Room is a great song. But I have better news. Because of you I have returned to guitar. I learned Wagon Wheel. My analysis shows that the chords are G, D, Em and C. It's a really fun song. Thanks.
Oh, I remember that song very well. In my first year in high school, I had a crush on this girl who lent me the 45 record version of this song, when it first came out. I made the mistake of bringing it over to a friends house to let him ear it. Well, his older brother being quite the rotter, scratched the crap out of it on purpose. I was in quite the panic because I was supposed to give it back to her the next day. Luckily for me I begged my mum to drive me to the only record store around, and I bought a new one. What a relief.
Fil, a great one here, @8 : 23 in the video, the chords you play sound like the intro to, the Allman Bros, song Midnight Rider, Rock on, Cousin Figel
Are they the same chords, or are my ears playing tricks on me, rock on, Cousin Figel
Loved this. I thought the female voice seemed to be just a little subsumed by the many different instruments. This may have been improved at the mixing desk.
You see, Fil, Cream as a three piece still has a firm grip on my memory and because White Room is a song I still listen to, a band with more instruments in a live production seems cluttered in comparison. A live recording is always going to be different because once a note is played its out there and gone with no re-takes for recovery.
A trombone player in a pub band I once enjoyed listening to, said, that bum notes are going to happen, the trick is knowing the next note to play to get out of it.
EC's plaintive sound is intoxicating - its really the second voice, or the third in this particular rendition of a song that can rightly be referred to as the Best of British.
I think that Clapton is one of the few artists who could make a mistake and recover, and a majority of people (myself included) would miss it and the rest (musicians) would not care.
Sheryl is amazing and they make a powerful team.
I like this song because the verses are nice and jumpy, and the lyrics are nonsense. The music content is hard, complex and very pleasurable to my ears. Thanks for breaking it down.
Hadn’t noticed those mistakes, although I once heard Eric play a massive bum note in a slow section of a solo (Manchester Apollo - Money and Cigarettes tour 1983). Some people laughed and he just looked up, grinned, shrugged and then pulled out all the stops as if he had a point to prove (which obviously he didn’t). That was the same gig he caught out Albert Lee, calling him up for a solo he wasn’t expecting (in Lay Down Sally) - it took him a couple of seconds to react ... Clapton liked to keep his band on its toes 😉 🎸👍
Great minds think alike...lol😜I was just, for the past few days, going through "my" musical taste; from the 60's, 70's when I was in grade school in the 60's and high school in the early 70's (well 1970 to '74 if you must know😉)and a common thread was Clapton! So, I have..."Buffalo Springfield", "Traffic", "Blind Faith", "CREAM", "Derek and The Diminoes", "Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young", and I know there's many more band that are part of this musical web. And I was reading comments from another person's video of Clapton ( can't remember the name of the chan) defending Clapton. I truly was shocked and voiced my 2 cents with "I thiught everyone at least "liked" Clapton. Anyway, maybe you could connect the dots for me, of the other bands influenced by Clapton's unique musicality?🤷🙏✌👌
Fil, I think your guitar tutorial was more captivating than the performance. I love this song, but it seemed like the fire had gone out of Clapton. Ms. Crow was also quite subdued. But hey, musicians have bills to pay, too. I'm sure there are many times when performers are just going through the motions to fulfill a contractual obligation.
Pete Brown ( lyricist) wrote completely different lyrics and called it Cinderella's Last Goodnight but Jack Bruce rejected it. Pete then pulled out an earlier poem and called it White Room. He said it was a bit of a miracle that it worked!
Music is all subjective. I have no problem with this version of "White Room". Of course it's not Cream. It's not supposed to be. 😅 I thought they rocked it, myself. Thanks, Fil! 🙂♥️
Rumor has it she wrote 'My Favorite Mistake' for/over him........
We ALL have a couple of those in our past~😉( But wish mine had been Clapton!😂🙅)
@@allisonyoung4007 Youth. ✌🏼💜
@@reemclaughlin4260 Exactly!😉
Tell me more about this rumor .. Please
@@kensod6034 This isn't a rumor. Fil discusses the mistake at 12:43
Seen this song played a few times over the years and Clapton always looks like showing the middle finger ( flipping the bird ) when playing the B flat C power chords, lol thanks
This was a nice version, particularly with Crow's vocals singing the falsetto part - but the White Room from Live Cream Vol 2 kicks some serious butt
Sheryl was perfect for this and nailed it ! I expected nothing less 😇🎸
Sorry Fil... I've been out of the loop for abit will try-n-popin more often ✌😎
Remember viewers.... when the guitar comes out the likes & subs go up 😆🎸
I am always up for a bit of Clapton and "White Room". I always wondered why the lyrics to 'White Room" were so hard to understand. The lyrics are penned by a poet, Pete Brown "nuff said" about that. I did wonder here "who the heck decided to put Clapton and Sheryl Crow on stage together" I then discovered that Clapton and Sheryl were just starting a 2 year romantic relationship, 'nuff said there also". Odd line from "White Room's" wiki page. That line would be "the song contains enough "hard rock menace" Well Ok there. I wonder if Eric gave Sheryl a few tips before this performance? About "guitar instructors". I am finding I learn better from the person just a few years more experienced than myself rather than the instructor with 30 years on me. I am thinking my "mega experienced instructor" is a bit filled up with beginning players. Thanks Fil.
Fil : With 2 guitars, have one strum a " C " chord and the other strum an Am chord. They produce an am7 chord and it sounds really good! ( Both play the chords at the same time).
I only have one guitar! 😂
@@wingsofpegasus Two different players. Each with a guitar. Now you get it. Have a good day!
Thanks Phil!!
love your content! Just wondering what software you are using to share your screen and hear the audio of the video you are playing?
I run the headphone output into the input of my interface, MimoLive is the program I use that splits the screen ☺
@@wingsofpegasus Wow! Thank you for getting back to me!
Fii,, please analyze the guitar playing and singing of Roger Mcguinn covering Pete Seeger's "Bells of Rhymney" solo in 2006 on the 12-String. Thanks, you're
the best! JACK
I have her DVDs and she has over 100 guitars in her collection...
Fil there is a great video of a live concert where Eric hits a bum note. He actually swears and the person editing superimposes a thought balloon with the word. It actually adds humour to the mistake. Sorry, just can't remember which performance.
Back in the day, Eric had Sheryl open up for him, when she started out, they started dating for a while,
Thanks, Fil! 🖤🤘🏽
Its kinda spooky you chose a performance Ive been obsessing on for the last week.
.....or even perhaps a fan of Jack Bruce, the song's co-composer, along with lyricist Pete Brown ?
PS, on what is Van Morrison's 75th birthday, I imagined you'd do a precis of one of his performances...perhaps another time sir !
Apologies Fil ..I recognise that it might have been constructed yesterday.
Cool video, thank you
I find that this song, "White Room" and "Can't find my way home" share some interesting similarities.
Now I shall have to start listening to Sheryl Crow now
Wonderful
Brilliant Fil.
Eric slowhand now has tinnitis and Sheryl crow retired. Some classic🤘
love this song.. this version ugh.. sorry but too many players drowning each other out.. keep analysing the songs please Fil. especially the guitar work..
eewww, what a gruesome twosome! Sheryl doesn't have the voice for this type of song. nice analysis as usual. *:-)*
Fil..hope you and yours are safe and well..STILL diggin' your channel..jus wanted to post you another nugget from i think a verrry under rated guitarist..."Travis Tritt - long haired country boy from Alive and Kickin'"enjoy, take care.
He's here somewhere!
@@wingsofpegasus LOL..hope you get to see him perform.
Still happy I can sing the original pitch.
You should react to Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the grand old lady of rock :)
Already have, she's out here somewhere!
Great ......that is the only thing I can think of to say!!!
A classic Cream track.
Rock!
:-)
Yay! Ol' "Slowhands!"
Kind of interesting...Eric Clapton is singing the part of the song that Jack Bruce used to sing and Cheryl Crow is singing the part of the song that Clapton used to sing.
I wanted to like this cover of White Room..well, not my favorite. The 3 guitars compensated. The drummer was laying it down!. Separately Clapton and Crow are great artists, together they are not. Thank you for pointing out the guitar licks and demonstrating them Wish YOU could have done Cheryl's part.
Off topic suggestion for another analysis: the extraordinary Solomon Burke singing That’s How I Got to Memphis (with Buddy Miller on guitar) th-cam.com/video/LJylh19OfCg/w-d-xo.html
Now back to Clapton and Crow . . .
ottimo concerto
I did not enjoy Sheryl’s performance here. She seemed out of her element here...my opinion of course. I’m a fan of her, but she was after all playing and singing along Eric Clapton. Her “interesting” sound can be allowed. Hard to enjoy anyone else alongside Clapton. 😁😁😁
OH FIL,, HOW BOUT PLAYING SOME PAT TRAVERS?
He's here somewhere!
React to "the wave" by SLT!!
I saw Sheryl Crow play only a few months before she became a household name, as the unannounced opener for John Hiatt, at a medium sized club. She was very relaxed and comfortable on stage, and had a great band.
I have to say, however, that I truly detest this type of gynormous concert concert venue, which sucks the soul out of the music, and quite possibly sucks the soul out of the audience as well.
Richard Thompson has been known to cover White Room on occasion, you can find several of his versions on You Tube.
👏👏👏👏👊🎸🎸😃🇧🇷
Obrigado Jose! 🤘
The singing was weak from both of them as I heard it.
I wouldn't dare to stand next to Eric Clapton and play guitar or stand next to Sheryl Crow and sing.
❤️Nice .
